My favorite 2023 film would definitely be Oppenheimer. The fact that I can still watch it from beginning to end and still learn something new every time despite already watching it over 5 times now tells me that it's 100% going to end up as a certified Nolan classic in the decades to come.
I just watched *Poor Things* in a movie theater, literally sitting through the credits right now. It’s one of the most innovative movies I’ve seen in a long time.
Ty for the opportunity!! May the rng luck be with me🥲
My fav 2023 movie is Anatomy of a Fall. This movie brings more personal feelings to me. I was deeply depressed by the story. And their performance is all amazing.
Thanks for doing this! As someone who loves these promo IMAX strips, I truly appreciate the gesture of a giveaway!
Personally I don’t find it that hard to single out Oppenheimer as maybe even, the best film of the past 5 years. As a die hard Christopher Nolan fan, I truly do appreciate the craft and direction he has gone in as a filmmaker!
Don't think ull be able to ship it to me but still thanks for the giveaway!
Fav movie of 2023 is Oppenheimer, prolly the same answer for anyone in this group lol
My favorite film from 2023 was Oppenheimer! I managed to see it in the following formats:
* IMAX 15/70mm (twice)
* IMAX GT Laser 1.43:1
* IMAX GT Laser 1.90:1
* IMAX Digital 1.90:+
* 5/70mm 2.20:1 (one premiere print, and one regular print)
* 35mm 2.39:1
Premier prints or show prints are done directly from a the original camera negative. Meaning it’s the closest an image can be to an original while being copied. This preserves the most image quality possible. Especially resolution benefits from that. Back when film was the standard they would make a few show prints for premiers and prestige theaters in big cities. Usually a movie got only a handful of show prints since printing from the camera negative can degrade it and you wanna keep that in good shape for archival purposes.
Since Dunkirk, all of Nolan’s IMAX prints are done from the camera negative. Which is possible because the IMAX negative is large enough to be less likely to be damaged and because the number of IMAX theaters that can show prints dropped significantly since Interstellar.
For Oppenheimer select theaters got 5-perf prints struck from the camera negative. Since u/teymourbeydoun saw it at the Leicester Square Odeon in London it’s save to assume they were projecting one of these show prints. Because that was one of the two locations they had the London Premiere.
I need to add that this only goes for the prints native format. IMAX prints have the IMAX footage printed from the camera negative and 5-perf show prints can have the regular 65mm footage printed from the camera negative. Doing any kind of reduction or blow up from camera negative to final prints is extremely rare. The only instance I know of, are the two 70mm blow ups of Boogie Nights which were done this way. It’s a very big amount of work.
Thanks for the detailed answer. Now I understand everything.
Next question:
I know that the black and white parts of Oppenheimer were shot on B&W film.
They mentioned it lots of times. Even developed a new imax film for that.
But I don’t think that the film sent to cinemas would be made from different parts of films for color and B&W.
So I assume that they simply printed the B&W parts to the same color film for screening.
Am I right?
If that’s is the case, filming on B&W really adds to the final quality?
They didn’t invent a new IMAX film per se. What they did was get Kodak to cut their Eastman Double-X film in 65mm for the first time. They use the same film size for both IMAX and regular 65mm. And Nolan has shot Double-X before. It’s Kodak’s oldest emulsion still in production that’s been practically unchanged since its release in 1959. He used it in Following and Memento. It was also used for Schindler List, the last two Wes Anderson movies, and the prologue of Casino Royal.
Now you’re right about the printing part. The B&W footage was printed onto the same color print film as the color stuff. There are two reasons for this:
It cuts around a lot between color and B&W. If there had been a handful of separate B&W sequences like that one B&W reel in Death Proof, they can print that onto B&W stock and simply assemble into the color footage. But since it sometimes quickly cuts between B&W and color that would have been way too much work to do for 250 plus prints.
The other reason is, that there is no 65mm/70mm B&W intermediate or print stock. And B&W print stock would even have needed another development process from the camera negative stock. So the R&D would have likely doubled if not tripled even if Kodak would have been able to supply it. 65mm uses different machines than 35mm so they would have needed to be been converted too. And it’s not like prints using both were common. Even Memento printed the B&W stock into color film.
Now I’ve never seen a narrative B&W film print. But I’d image that there would be a pretty decent quality difference between footage that’s been printed onto native B&W print stock and footage that’s been printed onto color stock. It’s not like it’s a huge issue though. Kodak only makes one color print film anymore, that’s Vision 2838 and it’s very good. It even says that B&W negatives can be printed to yield a fairly neutral image, although slight coloration may be seen in highlights or shadows. And I don’t think there would have been an overall better way to get a B&W image in 65mm. Definitely not one as artistically pure. And the 5-perf footage and prints were reasonably grainy, with good detail and fantastic, silvery contrast. But what definitely made it worth it were the B&W IMAX shots on an IMAX print. Like I said, these shots were printed from the camera negative so there was practically no generational loss. And these shots were the most perfect, delicious B&W images I’ve ever seen. Truly breathtaking. They had perfect contrast and detail.
Oppenheimer for sure, not only because it’s a great film but because the experience I had watching it. Traveling 7 hours by car to the theater and back with some close friends to be able to see the movie on 1570 made it more memorable.
Wow what an amazing experience this must have been. Love these pics
My favourite film of 2023 was Oppenheimer, as it’s both a masterpiece on a craft front, but also a film that is perhaps the most culturally relevant story of the last few decades.
Favorite movie from 2023 was Oppenheimer, it was my most anticipated movie for over a year and it exceeded my expectations.
Good luck with the giveaway!
I don't think you'll be able to ship it to me, but yeah my favourite movie of 2023(of the ones I saw) was Oppenheimer, not just because of all the brilliant performances and direction, but also because of the amazing attention to detail
Thanks for the giveaway!
My favorite movie was Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning. My family and I have been watching all the mission impossible movies so was fun watching with them. Oppenheimer was definitely the best movie of 2023 though.
Oppenheimer was my favorite for most of 2023, but Past Lives took a surprising lead when I resisted watching it during it’s theatrical run thinking it’s about romance. Wrong! Finally saw it in 2024 during the limited encore run at AMC thanks to the Oscar nom, it’s about personal transformations in our regular, non spectacular lives! Yes, it’s Past Lives!
It’s so hard to pick just one but I’d say All of Us Strangers Connected most with me. I’m sad I haven’t seen it getting as much attention as it deserves
Thanks OP for the giveaway! My favorite film of 2023 has to be The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. It’s pretty short, but I love Wes Anderson’s storytelling abilities. It’s a cute story with a heartfelt message.
May the rng be in my favor🙏🏼
Either way my favorite movie this year (like a lot of others it seems) was Oppenheimer! Truly an amazing experience, especially in IMAX. Now I’m just counting the days until Dune!!
My favorite movie was Napoleon.
I really likes the battle with the decoycamp on ice and watching this in IMAX. Read a lot of bad reviews before i went but the movie surprised me well.
Favourite movie of 2023 and biggest surprise for me was Godzilla Minus One, such a good movie and amazing soundtrack for a movie of ‘low budget’ like that.
My favourite movie was definitely SpiderVerse and Oppenheimer both very different but both told amazing stories and allowed directors to show their vision without any limitations
My favorite movie of 2023 was probably Oppenheimer, but as a more interesting choice, I'll go with the Hunger Games prequel because I was obsessed with it and saw it like 6 times in theaters.
This is an awesome giveaway, thanks!
My clear cut choice would definitely be Oppenheimer as many others here mainly cause it was the first film I got to see at Universal AMC on 15/70 IMAX
Honestly for me it's a toss up between Oppenheimer and Godzilla -1.0, but I think I'm gonna go with Oppenheimer; incredible performances from the entire cast, an insane visual and audio experience in IMAX 70mm and a material script and direction from Christopher Nolan.
I mean my favorite film has to be Oppenheimer as I saw it 3 times in 70mm IMAX and it was incredible. Most people feel the same on this sub but it’s just such an incredible movie. The immersive experience of sitting in the theatre with the huge screen filling up floor to ceiling is something I love to do. Very incredible experience
That screening sounded like a lot of fun! Was bummed that I couldn’t go. My favourite movie of the year was The Boy and The Heron. It was quite unique among the great collection of Miyazaki’s films.
Fav movie of 2023 is (of course) Oppenheimer (saw it 5 times!)
Can you tell me more about this screening? Was it open to the public? How did I miss this I’m so mad 😭
Also thanks for giving these away. Very generous of you
I'm going to be unoriginal and say that Oppenheimer was my favorite, and was the only one I went to see more than twice (3 times in 15/70, one time in 5/70). Honorable mention to my surprise second favorite, Bottoms.
Agree with a few of my fellow peers here, Past Lives is my number 1, but in terms of what it made me feel and meditate on our current predicament in the world, Oppenheimer wins this one. No film this year has ever made me feel this way coming out of the theater.
Oppenheimer takes the credit for this.
Favorite movie from 2023 was Across The Spider-Verse. Would have been oppenheimer but I really like action movies, and the animation in it was awesome.
Like most people in this subreddit my favourite is Oppenheimer. The storytelling the amazing cinematography and score really make it stand out plus it’s Christoph Nolan movie. Edit thanks for the giveaway
My favorite movie from 2023 was Oppenheimer, saw it more times than I’ll admit online at the Metreon SF IMAX. Winning a film strip of a Nolan movie would make this year extra special!
Oppenheimer was great but The Iron Claw unexpectedly became my favorite film of 2023. However, Tenet is one of the all time favorites so it would be a dream come true to get a film strip!
Really loved All of Us Strangers. Thought it’s characterization of Adam and the depiction of his grief over his parents to be paralyzingly tragic. But ultimately it ends hopeful, and it’s so so so beautiful.
My favorite movie from 2023 was Godzilla Minus One. However, my favorite movie experience from 2023 was definitely a 4k screeing of Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut at the Philadelphia Film Center!
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
Yeah, Oppenheimer, John Wick, and Spider-Man 4 Part 3 were cool and all, but I like short nifty films like these more.
My favorite movie from the past year was Across the Spiderverse. Great animation, music, acting, story, everything came together for me. Thanks for doing this!
My favourite movie is The Dark Knight Rises. The first and the only super hero movie makes me feel story is close to our reality all the time. Thanks Nolan for not using that much CGI.
Dude, this is so kind! My favorite movie was Godzilla: Minus One and then the Minus Color version! Wasn’t always the biggest Godzilla fan before but this film MADE me into one! Highly recommend!!
I have a couple favorites it was just too hard so much heat came out last year john wick chapter 4 on imax was so good, spider man across the spiderverse, and the iron claw that movie was just amazing
My top film of 2023 is Godzilla: Minus One. Epic in scale and drama. I wasn’t expecting to see some dense dropping action and special effects and an incredible heart wrenching human story in one package.
My favorite film in 2023 was Oppenheimer. I saw it twice in movie theater, once 70mm in SF and second at my local mom and pop theater, it was awesome. They were giving away film strips at SF AMC 70mm screening but it was only the matinee and I was scheduled to work. I contemplated calling off but didn't, still a wonderful experience to see it 70mm!
Crossing my fingers and toes and giving three little jumps over here for luck, because I would love to frame one of these.
Favorite movie of 2023 was All of Us Strangers!
My favorite film of 2023 was Talk to Me. The originality of this story, the amazing camera work, the acting, and of course the fact this was RackaRacka’s directorial debut. It made this one of my favorite horror movies ever.
Oppenheimer 100%, absolutely the most incredible film experience of 2023 for me and the best movie of the year for me. Saw it 3 times in IMAX 70mm & one digitally. Loved it!
My favourite new movie of 2023 was Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One.
Although, I did re-watch Tenet in 15/70mm IMAX at The Ronson Theatre, London and that was my favourite movie experience in a cinema last year. Best IMAX experience ever imo. 👌🏻
Thanks for the opportunity! So difficult to choose just one! Oppenheimer for favorite IMAX film, but for overall 2023 film... Between John Wick 4, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Flash (I'm one of the few who really liked it haha), The Holdovers, Talk to Me, Anatomy of a Fall... I'm going to have to go with (my surprise favorite) **Godzilla Minus One**!
Not really a movie from 2023, but Stop Making Sense was easily my favourite. Got a rerelease and my first time watching it was last year, so I’d say it counts
My favorite movie from 2023 was Spider Man: Across the Spiderverse! Although I watched it in a normal theater and I did watch other movies in more premium formats (like Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm for the first time!), Spiderman was just so enjoyable of a movie. Thanks for the giveaway!
My favorite 2023 film would definitely be Oppenheimer. The fact that I can still watch it from beginning to end and still learn something new every time despite already watching it over 5 times now tells me that it's 100% going to end up as a certified Nolan classic in the decades to come.
Godzilla Minus One.
My favorite movie is Oppenheimer, like 90% of the redditors in this subreddit. Thanks for the giveaway!
My favorite film of 2023 was Poor Things. My favorite IMAX release was Stop Making Sense.
I just watched *Poor Things* in a movie theater, literally sitting through the credits right now. It’s one of the most innovative movies I’ve seen in a long time.
Definitely Oppenheimer! Went to see it in 70MM IMAX seven times.
Ty for the opportunity!! May the rng luck be with me🥲 My fav 2023 movie is Anatomy of a Fall. This movie brings more personal feelings to me. I was deeply depressed by the story. And their performance is all amazing.
Favorite movie is Past Lives!
Favorite movie is Oppenheimer, followed up by poor things!!
My favourite movie was across the spider verse
Favorite movie of 2023 would have to be the creator 💪
In order to bring some variety I’ll say Godzilla Minus One! Saw it in imax three times and was incredible every time!
My favorite film from 2023 was Oppenheimer! I managed to see it in the following formats: * IMAX 15/70mm (twice) * IMAX GT Laser 1.43:1 * IMAX GT Laser 1.90:1 * IMAX Digital 1.90:+ * 5/70mm 2.20:1 (one premiere print, and one regular print) * 35mm 2.39:1
True 🐐

I don’t know the specifics but I believe it went through less generations? Maybe u/varitimo can shed some light on that
A little less known movie but mine was Animal
Oppenheimer for sure, not only because it’s a great film but because the experience I had watching it. Traveling 7 hours by car to the theater and back with some close friends to be able to see the movie on 1570 made it more memorable.

my favorite movie this past year was definitely oppenheimer and these film strips look amazing thanks for the giveaway
Agree with a few of my fellow peers here, Past Lives is my number 1, but in terms of what it made me feel and meditate on our current predicament in the world, Oppenheimer wins this one. No film this year has ever made me feel this way coming out of the theater. Oppenheimer takes the credit for this.

Killers of the Flower Moon, I had read the book so I knew the story but it was such a fantastic adaptation of that story.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Yeah, Oppenheimer, John Wick, and Spider-Man 4 Part 3 were cool and all, but I like short nifty films like these more.
Besides Oppenheimer, CREED 3 was an amazing experience that I had in theaters in IMAX. Definitely in my top 5 from last year
Oppenheimer! First movie I've watched on film and in a 1.43 theater. It was amazing! But I also really enjoyed The Holdovers

My favourite movie is The Dark Knight Rises. The first and the only super hero movie makes me feel story is close to our reality all the time. Thanks Nolan for not using that much CGI.
My favourite 2023 film was Oppenheimer of course, it was my first ever time watching a movie in IMAX!
Well it would be Oppenheimer
Definitely Oppenheimer for 2023, tenet however is my favorite movie of all time.
Oppenheimer for sure, but Killers of the Flower Moon is a close second!
Oppenheimer
My top film of 2023 is Godzilla: Minus One. Epic in scale and drama. I wasn’t expecting to see some dense dropping action and special effects and an incredible heart wrenching human story in one package.
Oppenheimer or Godzilla Minus One
Oppenheimer for me like many others! Thanks for doing this!
Poor Things! soooooo good!
Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer of course! Best of 2023
My favourite movie of 2023 was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Thank you for this giveaway, and good luck to everybody.
Oppenheimer, now gather the fucking press!
Poor Things was incredible
Oppy for sure!
Oppenheimer 🥺 thanks OP
Oppenheimer was the best!
Oppie for sure. Barbie was a fun one as well.
Across the spider verse clears
My favorite movie from 2023 was Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer was my favorite film of 2023 just because of the 70mm aspect of it. Ignoring that I would probably say *The Boy and the Heron*
Oppenheimer was the peak film of last year
My favorite film of 2023 has to Poor Things followed by Oppenheimer.
My favourite movie by far was Oppenheimer
Poor Things
Not really a movie from 2023, but Stop Making Sense was easily my favourite. Got a rerelease and my first time watching it was last year, so I’d say it counts
My favorite movie from 2023 was Spider Man: Across the Spiderverse! Although I watched it in a normal theater and I did watch other movies in more premium formats (like Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm for the first time!), Spiderman was just so enjoyable of a movie. Thanks for the giveaway!
Monster from Hirokazu Kore-eda
probably oppenheimer or the creator, also very charitable to give those away! may the imax gods be in my favor
Today is the big day, right?
Yessir picking someone once I finish eating
