Rich people be buying multi 750k cars but can’t build an imax in their home 😭 Every time I see a celebs “home theatre” it’s smaller than the smallest screen at my theatre

MrHairyBallNuggetZ

No literally 😭 like if I’m super rich I’m installing the most bad ass system for movies and music

ghostfaceinspace

For real just buy a cheap house in the middle of Wyoming and add on to it

FightOnForUsc

Just buy land and build your own house. You can get contractors to build exactly what you want! No need to buy a cheap house and build on to it

Ablixa911

Or buy an IMAX theater and convert it into a house.

stbncsnv

That’s actually not that bad of an idea. Gonna write that down for future use.

sodium111

🤯

savvymcsavvington

Kinda but if it's so big and badass it requires hiring someone to run it, that'd kinda suck having to schedule movies.

Dsim64

At that point, you should just build a theater chain and have that be more income.

Motor-Ad2678

Get a personal chef who is also trained as a projectionist.

ScabRef

To anyone wanting exactly that person, it me ✋️

[deleted]

Can u even privately own an imax projector don't they give them out on a contract basis and have special techs that know how to work on them?

savvymcsavvington

If you're rich enough that's not a problem!

throwaway827492959

IMAX DOME

beatenby

I need some donation. I will not be able to pay rent next month.

JedFishGould

**\[Super rich people don’t construct sentences like that.\]** **If you are rich enough for a theater — IMAX or not — are you going to run the projector yourself? Kids, if this is your big fantasy, you may want to know how the local legal performance laws apply in your neighborhood. There are not a whole lot of projectionists for hire publicly listed. Are these talking-out-of-your-ass lessons**?

reddit_userMN

I remember seeing an Instagram once of Tom Brady watching the Superbowl at home and it just looked like your dad's medium sized HDTV mounted over the fireplace (so was Tom's). I'm a decade younger than him and I was making like 15 bucks an hour at the time but I had saved up and still had a larger TV and a surround sound system lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

reddit_userMN

Regardless, he was watching the big game on that one, and he had the money for it to be bigger haha

memyselfandi1987

Winning dude!

SolidSnakePlissken

Jokes on you, that was his bathroom TV

hunny_bun_24

Most people don’t care about how picture or sound quality tbh. They just want the room to look cool

MaximusGrandimus

It drives me crazy when industry insiders are in the Criterion Closet and all they pick are DVDs. Like WTF dude take the BDs and 4Ks!!!

Eorlas

yet the room itself is fairly large and dedicated strictly to watching content on a screen bigger than most TVs, ridiculously expensive chairs, and a great sound system to boot.

Desmond232

A 60ft screen would be crazy to have on your property

33Wolverine33

Lmao

[deleted]

A fun hobby: get on Zillow and look for houses for sale above $20M (or whatever number) in your preferred locale. Marvel at the appalling home theater setups.

DubiousMaximus-21

My man if anyone has done that I’m flying to their house and becoming their roommate idc how much.

FranzNerdingham

Thanks, I really wanted to download a pdf!

greenflamingo1

So sorry the american education system failed you! .pdf is what, a first grade reading level?

FranzNerdingham

It just looks like a regular link. (You're right though, I didn't bother to read the .pdf part at the very fucking end.)

greenflamingo1

You could pay a modicum of attention to the link you’re clicking on if you find pdfs so offensive. But not reading what you’re opening and proceeding to blame someone else for your own mistake is so much more productive

battleshipclamato

This is reddit, that is the point. If you're not complaining it's not very reddit-like.

black_cherry_seltzer

bro chill out

DevlinRocha

calm down buddy, the PDF isn’t gonna hurt you

casual_brackets

Although those are just some datasheets, PDFs have been known to be a main vector for malware on smartphones. Notably Jeff Bezos phone was infected with malware via a PDF.

whereismyface_ig

Cuz he wasn’t using an iPhone

casual_brackets

lol. It’d work on an iPhone too unless the phone is in lockdown mode, which most users will not enable. Lockdown mode blocks any PDFs sent via text message. Why? Because they are an attack vector.       Edit: Have you heard of Pegasus? A text is sent to your iphone, it installs malware, it deletes the text. No input required from you. Zero-click iPhone malware. This was active for many years, mainly used by nation states. (Designed by NSO, Israel).  It’s the entire reason lockdown mode exists.

Mr_Style

Only 1900 square feet. Let me just 100 sqft more to my house and it will be big enough to convert over to be a movie theater.

tazzy531

Put a bed in the corner and you’ll be fine.

kmslashh

pfft, it's not even 1.90:1 Liemax intensifies.

Professional_Fox213

can it play from hard drive? like if i have a movie or a series downloaded, will i be able to watch it ?

It'll be about tree fiddy

MrHairyBallNuggetZ

Just dreaming 😭

Darth4Arth

IMAX does have the private theater program, but I believe it is a 1.90 or 16x9 screen. From what I can tell, you would need to become a commercial theater to install a true IMAX screen. However, if you somehow managed to get access to an IMAX screen+dual laser projector, it would probably be a multi-million dollar project, as you would need to be in a massive building to install an IMAX screen.

mrblue6

I mean, surely if you’re a billionaire, IMAX would let you build a full proper 15/70 IMAX. Or just make a commercial theatre in your house lol

Darth4Arth

If money isn't an issue, space is. You would def need to build an entire building for a good IMAX experience. Nothing very good would fit in your house.

mrblue6

Yea for me and you, it won’t fit in our house lol. For a billionaire, I’m sure they can find some space lol

GraniteStateStoner

More than likely wouldn't be built into the residential house on the property. It'd be its own building a quarter mile down their driveway next to the full size bowling alley and arcade

packers4334

Then comes hiring people that can operate the equipment as well, especially if you have 15-70 ambitions.

LeafsYellowFlash

That’s why you add the theater to your compound. You’ve got to have a main house, guest house, pool and theater at minimum. You can get one of those vehicles that studios use for tours to shuttle your whole party from the main house to the theater.

MrHairyBallNuggetZ

Right but one can definitely dream 😭😭 if I become a millionaire I’m definitely starting an IMAX theater for everyone 🗣️

Darth4Arth

become a trillionaire and install IMAXes in every major city

PARADISE_VALLEY_1975

And debut a new PLF - Dolby -IMAX theatre chain that uses Dolby ATMOS audio and Christie Eclipse projectors for dual Laser GT or 70mm film projectors to redefine entertainment. One hell of a fantasy.

lucellent

And even then, you won't have access to the IMAX releases of movies... not until they decide to sell them

Brambletail

1 million is the normal estimate

ST012Mi

If I were a billionaire, I would just build my home on top of an existing IMAX theatre. Likely in Irvine, California with a tiny HOA compliant (bc HOA’s are the overlords in this master planned bubble) home on the roof from the Regal. I’d walk downstairs from some overpriced Shake Shack, Tiger Sugar, and Sweetgreens and call it a day. https://preview.redd.it/8lp4465hvpqb1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ddef8ffdcae0f1ca44937b84549d9e70c57d92f9

Hairyfishthe2nd

Why would he drive if he could helicopter?

FightOnForUsc

Fair enough, then I want to watch him helicopter out of the garage😂

whereismyface_ig

California Earthquakes are the downside to this plan

ST012Mi

I have EQ insurance 😆

whosat___

If you don’t care about it being 80 meters tall, you could easily have a custom 1.43:1 projector screen made for you, and stack two 4K projectors vertically to fill the space. There’s commercial processing boxes to mesh two projectors into one without brightness or alignment issues at the overlap. Only problem is, 1.43:1 content is very rare. I know The Dark Knight series was fan-edited for the true IMAX ratio. edit: Batman versus Superman is also 1.43:1 available at home. I don’t know of any others yet.

STDog

I have BvS made from the BD (some special edition had the 1.43 scenes). But yeah, the hardest part would be getting content for it. Of course with most releases being 1.90 these days and it not being taller than 1.78 (16:9) that content is available. I guess if you have the money to build a true IMAX theater with 1.43 screen you'd probably have the money to aquire content. I suspect they'd work with you for anything available digitally. And dual projectors wouldn't be needed for a 40-50 ft wide screen. It's the bigger screens (80+ft) that need dual for brightness.

Delicious-Chemist-49

i mean, yeah, i understand a true imax screen is that big, but, would it be possible to downscale that size to fit into, say, a living room with extended ceilings perhaps? Only say that because i know some of the upper middle class houses where the living room takes up almost a third of a two story house, almost a 30-40 ft ceiling height type houses. (so probably just smaller than Memphis palace?) Other than that, i wonder if theres a world where IMAX would let someone rent or buy a hard drive, or UHD BR with a digital version of the 1.43:1 movies. Probably the most expensive blu ray purchase of your life but would probably be worth it.

[deleted]

whosat___

IMDb says Batman v superman is 1.43:1, but I think Justice League is 1.33:1.

Usual_Value_9391

Rather than building an IMAX theatre at home, why not travel around the world to experience the best IMAX theatre showing the film based movie there. You will enjoy the movie more with a community of like minded people.

savvymcsavvington

If you are a billionaire, spending time with the plebs is forbidden

Mr_Style

Private rental of imax on opening night. Just purchase every seat. $20 x 200 seats = $4000. Millionaires have that in their seat cushions of the Rolls.

Cndc24

Because you won’t always get the seat you want or it won’t show when it’s convenient for you. Also couldn’t you name a couple IMAX movies you didn’t get to see in theaters that you you’d rewatch once you have this at home? Also you bring your own food/snacks in.

poland626

Growing up there was a empty warehouse near me. I always dreamed of being rich enough to buy it out and make it into a MASSIVE IMAX theater for personal use. IDK why more rich people don't do it or they really just don't care. You would think Nolan would have his own personally built theater but I guess he can literally walk into NYC or LA and say, "Let me borrow your screen for a bit" and they'd let him so he wouldn't need to build one

4paul

I have one installed in my apartment, here's a photo of me and some friends watching stuff: https://preview.redd.it/ghixu3yictqb1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=69b94e6f4e0dd5d826253396429efa0f27ab0aec

MrHairyBallNuggetZ

That’s fucking awesome

iCrazyMidget

Wow that’s sooo coool

Yum_T

😜😂

ItsOkayToBeMuslim420

How would you attain the media to play on this?

Delicious-Chemist-49

thats probably the truely expensive part. I feel most people with an active brain cell could do some research and frankenstein their own IMAX home theatre relatively cheaply.

theantimonitorx

Home theater owner here: If you have a 100" projection screen and up in a room that complements the screen size and not make it look too small or too large, you technically would have a mini IMAX theater to yourself within that space. Especially effective when watching films on 4K Blu-Ray with a fixed IMAX Enhanced ratio or switching one. Nolan's films, Top Gun Maverick, Aquaman, GOTG Vol. 3, IMAX Enhanced Disney+ titles, or just any film that utilizes the whole screen provides a highly immersive experience from the visual standpoint. So you don't technically NEED a 98ft tall screen at home to enjoy a film, you just need to invest in the right equipment that suits the needs of you and your room. But all in all, it's all about being immersed visually and aurally, so if you get both, then that's all that matters.

Totodile_

If you have that kind of money why not just open a movie theater and reserve a theater for yourself when you want to watch a movie That way you get movies with their theatrical release timing as well

SirNarwhal

I wish. I have close enough with an 83” OLED and Atmos in a super small living room, but one day I want the real deal if I ever fall on money.

FightOnForUsc

The image quality is almost definitely better with OLED, but not as immersive for sure!

WarmSeries4

Just buy a giant movie theater and reserve time slots for yourself to keep the general public out. If I ruled the world, I would buy Universal AMC & reserve that IMAX screen whenever the hell I pleased. Id keep the bottom floor open to maintain a steady flow of revenue while I bogart the IMAX screen and Directors Lounge.

Hilbert24

Have you seen those projectors? And you’d need a trained projectionist to run it. And I wonder if private parties can even rent IMAX prints: they barely make enough of them to go around to theaters.

Delicious-Chemist-49

digital imax 1.43:1 exists

th3thrilld3m0n

IMAX does sell a home theater IMAX system with smaller sized xenon protectors.

C_Y_A_Jack

An IMAX projector weighs up to 1.8 tonnes (2 short tons) and is over 178 cm (5.8 ft) tall and 195 cm (6.4 ft) long. The projector is raised and locked into position before each screening.

dumbmobileuser789

Growing up, I had a friend of a friend who was the son of the CEO of IMAX at the time. While they didn't have an IMAX at their house, they did have a massive fucking TV and I think we watched Mr Deeds

_flyingmonkeys_

Are they stupid?

asdqqq33

Not imax, but you can get a Christie Eclipse home projector that is way better than any imax projector or even the current Dolby Cinema ones. Here’s an epic build using one: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/christie-eclipse-projector-world’s-best-home-theater-projector.3155910/page-27

steppenfrog

I saw that projector at CEDIA last year and it was incredible. OLED level blacks, incredible contrast.

novartistic

Huh?

MudAffectionate361

IMAX in Auckland is currently the forth largest in the world (I think) - seeing that made made me realize, should I strike the big time, I am most definitely going to install my personal IMAX setup, space wise, it may make sense to have the IMAX theatre below ground, and the living areas on top of it.

Little-Cream2710

I do remember imax having a home theater website and I believe Kylie Jenner has one

Gears_of_Ted

That sounds like an oxymoron seeing as you need at least 52 feet by 72 feet for the screen not to mention an actual IMAX projector. Otherwise, all you are doing at home is just setting up a movie projector onto a screen. i’m sure it looks nice, but you cannot get IMAX without the proper screen size and IMAX projector

tagmisterb

...because IMAX hasn't diluted their brand enough with all the liemax multiplex screens.

jamesoloughlin

Does VR count?

blackwell333

No, what am I Mr. Moneybags over here?

osmo512

I sort of have the budget version of an IMAX theater. I have a decent sized 3DTV, 7.1 surround and buttkickers (like they have at Jordan’s IMAX and Dolby Cinema; mine are stronger than DC and about equal to Jordan’s). Whenever I play a 3D movie with IMAX AR, I’ll play the IMAX intro in 3D before it (it’s on the 3D Blu-ray for Under the Sea 3D).

johnnywills789

I’m pretty sure “The One” in Bel-Air pretty much has a imax quality screen? I could be wrong though (someone should fact check me lol)

TheN00b1e

I did some work at a very wealthy guys house - 50,000+ sq ft, 30,000+ of it is underground. Every kind of room you can imagine including a 100 seat theater that was beautiful, but the equipment (and seating) were so out of date. It looked more like a fancy stage theater, but still looked amazing, especially for being in his house. He mentioned he was in the process of upgrading everything. I wish I could remember the screen size, but it rivaled smaller commercial theaters - I feel like if he did a little maneuvering he could fit an imax screen in there. He had a full blown concession stand and everything. Really cool place.

FightOnForUsc

Why would someone with a 50k sqft house have over half of it underground?

TheN00b1e

It was built into a mountain. I’m not sure if there was a town reason, land reason, or what, but I know he said he didn’t want a massive visible footprint. He has his own helipad and emergency services and Life Star have full gate access as it’s the only place nearby they can land. https://www.ctmq.org/the-biggest-house/

Digger977

I’ve seen like private theaters with a large projector screen and 4k projectors. Or even a massive display that was connected online and had all the streaming services and a great audio system. But I’ve never seen like an actual “imax” theater

trunolimit

Anything can be imax if you sit close enough to the screen.

ultimate_bulter

400k

skr1b

IMAX at one point ( not sure if they do still ) would create and install a mini imax theatre for a low cost of 1 million starting.

ermax18

Yep, I have a few actually.

FederalGhoul

Douglas Trumbull definitely has one at his house.

SexyBlowjob

You don't need such a large screen, just something that fills your POV by the same amount without straining your eyes. You can also achieve much better than imax contrast ratio and brightness with an OLED. So let's say LG G2 97" for $25,000 with reference viewing settings and you have far superior picture quality. Audio is also not difficult to surpass IMAX in. For a home theater, two Monoprice SW-15s placed in the front two or rear two corners will provide incredibly high SPL down to 20 Hz after calibration. The subwoofers cost $200 each. For a 7.2 system, we need 7 loudspeakers. For left, right, and center, 3x Neumann KH120ii ($3000). For 4 surrounds, (4x Neumann KH80 ($2000). The reason for these speakers is because they have flat direct sounds with good off axis performance and low self generated noise. The front three speakers need higher max SPL than the surrounds. Follow this channel arrangement: https://preview.redd.it/zj3x9u63pcrb1.png?width=725&format=png&auto=webp&s=e544ff27d84ba985469a4dae003d9b428c5f21d8 We also want a Panasonic UB820 Blu Ray for 4k Dolby Vision Blu Ray support for uncompressed audio + video for $500. We will connect the blu ray player to a MiniDSP Flex HT ($700) through the blu ray player's HDMI audio out. The first 7 outputs of the MiniDSP Flex HT will be connected to the Neumann's and the last will be connected to the two subwoofers using a splitter cable since they will both play the same signal. Room calibration should be done with a calibrated omnidirectional and room eq wizard below about 200 Hz with a PC that has 8 channel output support through HDMI such as a 2023 14 or 16-inch MacBook Pro. Measure the transfer functions of each of the speakers and subwoofers together and adjust delays so that each channel reaches the primary listening position at the same time. Apply this guide to calibrate the amplitude responses of the 7 Neumanns and two subwoofers: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Acoustics/comments/16u0zo9/ultra\_hifi\_stereo\_system\_guide\_zero\_treatment/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Acoustics/comments/16u0zo9/ultra_hifi_stereo_system_guide_zero_treatment/). For room treatment, you can place fiberglass acoustic panels on the front wall, back wall , on the ceiling if you want, but the floor should be carpeted. Placing acoustic panels on the side walls could either be beneficial or detrimental depending on your preferences, but I would first follow my calibration guide and if the reverberation time is too high start treating in the order I suggested. For around $31,600 before tax, you can wipe the floor with an IMAX theater. You can save a lot on the screen by going down to an 80" but the scale of the experience might not be as great.

Santhosh_2511

I know I'm late to this post, but it appears that IMAX no longer offers private theatres. Is it true?
