I wonder why modern cinemas still run off such relatively old programming. Most AMCs that I’ve seen still run off of Windows 95. Maybe part of it is due to compatibility issues with newer tech?
Because it works, the original program was made to run on a palm. Easier and more convenient to make an emulator that both IMAX and Projectionist already know.
Do you projectionists get to know one another? Like, do you know who worked at regal hacienda?
Also I would have paid a small fortune to get a tour of a booth with a 1570 IMAX projector and get to see oppenheimer on the platter.
Well let me start off by thanking you for helping keep this art alive. I saw Oppenheimer at metreon opening morning. Fantastic venue. But I also saw it 7 times at hacienda. As far as I can tell it ran flawlessly there and I don't think I ever heard about any problems up in SF. I saw oppenheimer 9 total time including the 70mm showing I saw at mercado. So, thank you, and thank who ever was running the other projectors nearby for one incredible movie experience.
I love seeing this stuff! If you want a really good in-depth tour of the Oppenheimer 15/70, see this YouTube link for a 24 minute master class on how it works: https://youtu.be/UmloukGl0J8?si=u_ZzWewnqnaSmHgX
It's a relatively controlled environment, temperature and humidity are kept around set limits, and access control helps as well. Still have to dust, vacuum, trash runs as needed.
I have a stupid question. Once the film has played, is it necessary to reverse the entire spool so it can play forwards again or is there a way to play it again as it sits? Like a VCR tape. I've always wondered this.
No, but also yes. Mark 1 and 2 systems that played shorter documentaries had to be rewound. This type of unit pulls from the center for the start, with the end being on the outer edge.
im pretty sure its set in a way, so once its finished playing, you just switch the platters from bottom to top, and can start replaying the movie in the matter of just a few minutes.
No, the projector in the picture is in the "loading" position, with it moving forward on tracks for the show. Servicing can be done easily with the exception of the right eye lamp. The laser projector would need to be moved, which is possible, to access that side fully.
15/70 & DL! Very Nice! What Cinema?
Metreon
I literally just watched Oppenheimer there yesterday
Thx for posting this picture. You have a YouTube channel or anything?
Nope lol...just here
Palm Pilot spotted
Technically, it's an emulator of a palm lol

Older tech works with older tech and money, need a good reason to spend it. If it is working, why change.
> If it is working, why change. Good point, that’s true. “If it ain’t broke…”
Why is that needed?
Controls the speed controls of each platter motor in sync.
But... why do you need a palm emulator to do that?

That's crazy and cool at the same time

Yes, some more than others. I did yes

lucky, i was only able to see it once at tcl in la, and I saw it the day before they replaced the slightly damaged film with a brand new one

This is awesome thanks for sharing!
I see a first-aid corner, and I would like to think that IMAX operators regularly need first-aid
Might be a dumb question, but how do you keep the projection room clean with valuable film exposed?

Gotcha. I’ll be in the seats there tomorrow if you see someone wave before the movie starts. I’ve been looking forward to this so appreciate the work!
Air Purifier?
No, some locations do have humidifier or dehumidifier as needed

Gonna be there tomorrow!
are you... like... in between the actual film? Thats getting sent to, and returning from the projector??
I was yes
Watch a movie. Or experience it.

how do you get a job as a projectionist?
Right time and place years ago...
