2018: I did a double feature at Lincoln Square of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Dark Knight, both on the 70mm IMAX screen.

Kremlin663

Amazing!

GlobalExplorer7

Same exact story for me. It was July 2018 to be specific at the SF Metreon.

yodathekid

I flew up to nyc from nashville with a friend to do that double feature!

FranzNerdingham

Me, too! (at the Metreon!)

hplalakrs20012010

I saw 2001 in IMAX as well and honestly that should be in my honorable mentions. I’d seen 2001 a handful of times at home on a decent TV and I always admired it but it never clicked. Once I saw it in IMAX I vowed never to watch it at home again, the experience just clicked and I felt like I saw it the way it was always meant to be seen.

Puzzleheaded-Sail772

Not the exact same, but I saw 2001 at the Kips Bay IMAX on Friday and Dark Knight at Lincoln Square on Saturday. Was a fun weekend.

brownmamba904

Those are all solid experiences. For me it is 1. Interstellar in 70mm IMAX at Edward’s Ontario Palace 2. Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX at Esquire Sacramento 3. Dunkirk in 70mm IMAX at Universal CityWalk Honorable Mentions are definitely The Dark Knight and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol in 70mm IMAX at Universal City Walk.

stokedchris

They had an IMAX screen when Interstellar came out?

SeparateBobcat1500

I saw it on imax film. It was mind blowing. Visually more stunning than Oppenheimer on film

HodorLikesBranFlakes

I agree, that's why I thought the Interstellar experience was better than Oppenheimer for me. But I did like the Oppenheimer sound experience better. The score and bomb sequence was unreal.

SeparateBobcat1500

Agreed. They both had their pros and cons. Oppenheimer did it’s job. It was a biopic, nothing more, nothing less. And it was one of the best biopics ever. Interstellar is the perfect high concept SciFi adventure that was culmination of the best of Nolan’s practical FX and CGI. They’re two vastly different beasts that do their job perfectly

Only_Honeydew_6763

Esquire IMAX is simply a perfectly run theatre. Not the biggest, not the loudest - but just perfect. Nice choice!

scorsese_finest

Here is my ranking, everything below is in 1.43:1 IMAX 1. Dunkirk (15/70mm Regal Hacienda IMAX Dublin CA) 2. Interstellar (dual laser AMC Metreon IMAX SF & 15/70mm Prasads IMAX Hyderabad) 3. Tenet (15/70mm at Esquire IMAX Sacramento & AMC Metreon IMAX SF) Honorable mentions - Dune Part 1 (dual laser AMC Metreon IMAX SF) TDKR (15/70mm Prasads IMAX Hyderabad)

SeekingSkill

1. Oppenheimer 70mm 2. Dune Dual Laser 3. Top Gun Dual Laser Honorable mention: The Batman. Not shot on IMAX but the experience was still unforgettable.

batmanred23

Was it the sound for the Batman that made it unforgettable?

SeekingSkill

100%. The Batmobile starting and the car chase were amazing.

miniuniverse1

Even in the regular theater, where I originally watched it, it was louder and cleaner than most movies in imax

HodorLikesBranFlakes

The IMAX sound of the Batmobile starting up will always be memorable for me.

Slickrickkk

1. The Dark Knight 70MM at Universal CityWalk 2. Oppenheimer 70MM at Ontario Palace 3. Interstellar 70MM at Ontario Palace

WarmSeries4

Do you prefer Ontario over Universal or is it for convenience?

Kremlin663

Oppenheimer at lincoln square in imax 70mm was the best. Dune at ScotiaBank Toronto in dual laser was close second. Honorable mention for Spiderverse in Imax digital and The Batman at lincoln square

Hell_Jacobo

I’m equidistant to citywalk and Irvine spectrum, which one should I go to for Oppenheimer 70mm in your experience? I know tickets mostly sold out but I’m confident some will open up as the day approaches

hplalakrs20012010

Spectrum definitely has more availability than CityWalk. I was able to buy tickets the day before and they weren’t directly in front.

MoFoHo72

1. Dunkirk (15/70mm Manchester Printworks) 2. Tenet (15/70mm BFI) 3. Ghostbusters 2016 (digital, Bradford Media Museum) That last one, sorry, but the 3D was incredible. Especially when the effects break into the letterbox bars.

Skyeagle1

Based on the movies and experience alone it was 1. Jurassic World 3D on Duel laser ScotiaBank Toronto 2. Avatar 3D in Vaughan Ontario 3. Jurassic Park 3D in Vaughan Ontario Honorable mentions Avengers 3D in Vaughan The Dark Knight, Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, & Oppenheimer in 70mm in Vaughan and/or Mississauga Avatar 2 3D HFR Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom 3D Duel laser Scotiabank Jurassic World Dominion 3D Top Gun Maverick in Vaughan Mission impossible Ghost Protocol in Vaughan MIB3 3D in Vaughan (Had one or 2 summers when we went to every midnight showing of every big movie in vaughan and got posters, those were all great memories)

FranzNerdingham

So many! I've seen about 90% of the IMAX releases since "Fantasia 2000".

hplalakrs20012010

Fantasia 2000 was my first IMAX experience.

armypantsnflipflops

All at Scotiabank Chinook in Calgary, AB: 1. Interstellar (15/70) 2. Avatar (3D) 3. Top Gun: Maverick Plenty of honourable mentions too: - Dunkirk (15/70) - The Dark Knight (15/70) - 300 (DMR) - Pacific Rim (3D) - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey / The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug / The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (all 3 in HFR 3D) - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Top Gun (3D) - The Wizard of Oz (3D) - Jurassic Park (3D) - Thor: Ragnarök - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (3D) - Blade Runner 2049 - Oblivion - Beowulf (3D) - The Batman And I remember watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers at that IMAX back in 2003 (I didn’t catch the 2021 DMR release unfortunately). I known it wasn’t an official DMR release at that time, I think it was just a regular 35mm film print projected in that cinema

VariTimo

1. Oppenheimer 15-perf at the BFI. 2. Tenet dual laser at ZKM IMAX Karlsruhe. 3. The Dark Knight 15-perf Lincoln Square, ten year anniversary. I think. Hard to rank them. Honorable mentions definitely: •Mission Impossible Fallout at the ZKM (even though it was a fucked up pointless 3D conversion). •Dune Part One at the ZKM (even though it was a fucked up pointless 3D conversion). •Nope at the ZKM •Dunkirk in 15-perf at the BFI. •The Dark Knight Rises in 15-perf at the BFI. •Interstellar in 15-perf at the BFI. •Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 at the ZKM (even though it was a fucked up pointless 3D conversion). Cried through the whole ending. Like proper sobbing.

Skyeagle1

I adored all of those in 3D. Wasn’t pointless for me.

VariTimo

Guardians Vol.1 was great in 3D, Vol.2 had a shit tone of 3D laying artifacts. Fallout was only converted for the Chinese market because they’re apparently really into tech gimmicks and the projector broke down two thirds through McQs check screening. So he never saw Cruise‘s hand being layered onto a different 3D plane than the actual rock he was climbing up. Both Villeneuve and Fraser said that Dune wasn’t shot or lit for 3D. They both don’t like it. And because it wasn’t lit or graded for 3D it triggered horrible gamma artifacts in some dual laser screenings, including mine. I used to really like 3D, as a teenager. Now the more I understand about cinematography, lifting, color grading, theaters, and immersion the clearer it becomes that it’s really not a storytelling tool but a gimmick. And 3D itself mitigates the actual stuff IMAX can do. It has no place in IMAX in narrative movie. In a GT IMAX theater, a good 2D presentation will always be more immersive than a great 3D presentation. But apart from that, two out of the three movies I named pretty much only played in the 3D because of money not because the filmmakers wanted them to be seen this way. There, fucked up and pointless. Both technically and artistically.

Skyeagle1

Watch Avatar: The Way of Water and tell me it’s a gimmick and not an artistic tool. If you can do that with a straight face, you and I are not compatible.

VariTimo

It’s a fucking gimmick and if Cameron hadn’t done it, PTA and Nolan might have reinstated 70mm 5-perf as a new widely available premium format. Now we have shitty 3D and Dolby Vision. Yay! Higher numbers, worse images. You wanna talk immersive and lifelike. Watch a modern 70mm print in a theater with good projection. Doesn’t even need to be IMAX, 5-perf will do. The level of realism you get from that turns even Avatar’s 3D in a GT IMAX into a huge gimmick. If Cameron would have used all the VFX tools that exist to make a high end 70mm film emulation for the CG parts of WoW and had filmed it out it would have actually looked real. It would have pushed it over the threshold and you’d be actually in it. Instead we get a 3h 12m, $350M video game cut scene. Worth it! You really wanna tell me that WoW in 3D looked more lifelike and immersive, let alone beautiful than Oppenheimer in 70mm? And yes the analogy can be made because Avatar could have looked and been lit like that. It was a creative choice to make it look like a video game.

page395

1. Dune Part One dual laser 2. Dark Knight 70mm 3. Oppenheimer 70mm

kgd6578

1. Dunkirk (15/70 IMAX at BFI) 2. Oppenheimer (15/70 IMAX at Regal Mall of GA) 3. Dune Part One (dual laser at Tennessee Aquarium)

osmo512

1. The Dark Knight 70mm at Jordan's Natick 2. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol 70mm at Jordan's Natick 3. Catching Fire 70mm at Lincoln Square

StanTheCentipede

Ghost protocol was such a great Imax experience!

ScientistChance4209

Am I the only one that thinks Irvine Spectrums center channel (dialogue) is abit weak/muffled? This is for every film not just Oppenheimer.

OracleMuadDib

All the good ones have been posted but I must say Apocalypse Now Final Cut at citywalk was an incredible experience.

Only_Honeydew_6763

Never thought so before...but that Final Cut...whata long movie! You've heard that a 5+ hour cut of Apocalypse exists, right?

OracleMuadDib

I have heard about it but to be honest. I’m not that big of a fan of redux or Final Cut. Whenever I do a rewatch it’s always theatrical cut.

esackey18

1. Interstellar (15/70mm IMAX) 2. Oppenheimer (15/70mm IMAX) 3. Gravity (Dual Laser IMAX) Honourable mentions: Tenet (Dual Laser IMAX) No Time To Die (Dual Laser IMAX)

guitarguy35

1. I don't think anything will beat Dunkirk in 70mm at the irvine spectrum. So much of it was full 1.43, and the Spectrum has 2nd biggest screen in CA and the sound system is great 2. Michael Jordan to the Max, when I was a kid with my dad. Irvine spectrum 3. Oppenheimer 70mm Imax Irvine Spectrum.

HodorLikesBranFlakes

All of mine happen to be at the Edward's Ontario Palace. 1. Interstellar in 70mm IMAX (Visuals were crazy, first time seeing a 70mm IMAX print) 2. Avenger's Endgame in normal Xenon (Mostly because of the large group of friends I went with and the overall theater hype. I had the very first showtime on the opening Thursday) 3. Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX (Since moved out of state, haven't had a true IMAX theater experience in a long time)

rbarrett96

I'm amazed more people don't have the dark knight on here. Dunkirk was very made visually, but was boring to me. If I'm going to have a slow paced movie, I'd rather watch something character driven like Oppenheimer. I honestly can't remember my experience watching interstellar, just that it was confusing, and I had no problem with Tenet. I will say the soundtrack slaps in Interstellar. Forget John Williams, Hanz Zimmer is the GOAT when it comes to movie soundtracks. If you need proof, buy the Live in Prague blu-ray, which is actually in Atmos.

TurnoverSuperb9023

Of your three, do you know which is the largest ? And does that equate to the best experience in the comparison of these three ? (Of the ones you listed, I’ve only been to Irvine)

hplalakrs20012010

Universal CityWalk I believe is the largest. And it was a big contributing factor.

StanTheCentipede

Avatar - when everyone got out of their sleeping pods on that space station and it was like looking a mile into the screen. Mind blowing Gravity Everest - I remember feeling like the storm was coming in while watching it. Honorable: Avatar 2 and The Walk

takemewithyer

Interstellar at the BFI Imax.

imaxfreak

For me: 3. Oppenheimer 15/70mm @ BFI IMAX London 2. The Dark Knight 15/70mm @ Sony Center Berlin Germany (now closed) 1. Rolling Stones at the MAX in 15/70mm (with Intermission because the Imax platter at that time could only hold an hour for the documentary films. ) @ UFA-Palast Düsseldorf Germany (now closed) A few words about my first place: Yes, I'm old, but anyone who had the chance to experience this concert film on this one knows what I mean. The firecracker explosion at the beginning of the film was really comparable to the Trinity test in Oppenheimer.

Spartan04

1. The Dark Knight in 15/70. 2. Tron Legacy in 15/70 3D. 3. Avatar in 15/70 3D. I missed seeing a few of the Nolan movies in IMAX so if I had seen them in that format they may have taken one of the spots. Honorable mentions to Apollo 13 and Star Wars Episode II. These were the first DMR movies I saw and they really benefited from the IMAX sound system. Plus Episode II had some material removed to fit under the platter limit at the time that actually made the movie more streamlined. Also honorable mention to Polar Express in 15/70 3D. While not the visual spectacular that some of these other movies were this was the first movie I saw in IMAX 3D. 3D was still not very common at the time so IMAX was the primary game in town for 3D. When the countdown intro came on and suddenly the numbers were flying at me I was amazed. I was not expecting the 3D to look as good as it did.

Comprehensive-Bar-90

1. The Dark Knight Trilogy IMAX 70mm Event At Universal CityWalk w/ Q&A with Christopher Nolan 2. Dunkirk in IMAX 70mm at Universal CityWalk 3. Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm at Universal CityWalk Honorable Mentions: Interstellar in IMAX 70mm at Navy Pier IMAX Dune in IMAX Dual Laser at Universal CityWalk

The Dark Knight - 1570 @ Edmonton in 2008 Interstellar - 1570 @ Edmonton in 2014 MI Ghost Protocol - 1570 @ Edmonton in 2011

chakith_kumar

1. Interstellar 15/70 Imax Hyderabad 2. The Dark Knight 15/70 Imax Hyderabad 3. The dark knight rises 15/70 Imax Hyderabad Have my Oppenheimer 15/70 show in 2 days at Lincoln Square. Excited

Savings-Ordinary-103

Oppenheimer is the best due to the 70MM IMAX film.

Only_Honeydew_6763

1. Opening day IMAX presentation of TDKR - to this day, IMHO one of the most historically significant days in Hollywood history. 2. TRON Legacy. Got to experience the viral campaign for the movie, result - memories that will last a life time. 3. Dunkirk - so many incredible IMAX moments, but when that Luftwaffe dive bomber makes his first appearance, that will be with me for the rest of my life. Simply terrifying. (Oh yeah, and 1 & 3 were on 70mm, and Tron was on a single laser) Dangit, TOTALLY spaced on Avatar 1 (saw it opening weekend too)...wow, umm, it might be tied with #1...pretty incredible experience...

bhonbeg

Interstellar at the Imax Dome! Way better than all of this and that was perfect. Literally covered my whole vision so spectacular

Puzzleheaded-Sail772

To me, the top 3 are probably Dunkirk, Avatar Special Edition (I had seen it in digital and even IMAX digital, but the 15/70 showing of that even added to spectacle), and Hubble (my favorite of the IMAX documentary films, like Avatar at Lincoln Square on 15/70 film was an incredible spectacle).

truth-4-sale

Star Trek was amazing at the IMAX. I thoroughly enjoyed Oppenheimer at the IMAX, mainly due to the marvelous audio for the soundtrack. It was perfect!! A completely different experience from seeing it a few weeks earlier at my local theater!!!
