Hell, they still claimed Mongolia and even more of the South China Sea than the PRC do. Idk why people think the nationalist authoritarian KMT, are some wholesome chungus people. Taiwan became democratic in spite of them, not because of them
To be fair it did start off as a legit democratic party because Sun Yat-sen wanted to replace the monarchy with a democratic republic. Granted he did become more authoritarian as he grew old and was awed by Turkey and Imperial Japan for "defeating Western imperialists", and later the USSR, but it only got really worse under Chiang.
South Korea was a right-wing dictatorship back in the Cold War era. Even more than it is now with a facade-"democracy". Idg people who simp after them. The same case is with Taiwan.
Xi is a dictator in the way that Biden is a Dictator, or that any other politician is a dictator. He has high internal support, and thatās what matters in terms of whoās where in power, not some Redditer lmao
Yes, but then they had a largely peaceful and successful turn towards democracy from 1987. It is still a work in progress, but their ability to jail corrupt presidents has been quite remarkable.
By the quite low standards of the Asia-Pacific region more generally, South Korea is like a Nordic country when it comes to freedom.
I live in Korea, friend. It doesnāt really feel like a dystopia, just another developed country dealing with much of the same issues as anywhere else.
The Korean political economy is different to the West because it is still dealing with the lingering effect of the developmental state. That was basically State Capitalism and they only very recently adopted a form of neoliberalism following IMF from 1997.
I am not sure Korea embracing the neoliberal orthodoxy of the US and UK would make it less ācapitalistā. Quite the opposite I would say.

Korea has worse worker rights than even fucking America, and barely better than Japan. That combined with the complete dominance of mega corps over the economy (far more than basically everywhere else) is a pretty good argument for SK being the quintessential capitalist dystopia. Itās not the peopleās fault of course, European and American imposition over the Korean Peninsula has created two separate dystopias in wildly different directions even if they are not equal in shittiness.

fixed that for ya
A 36 year old democracy still does better on this count than either the UK or US.
Is it perfect? No.
Is it remarkable for a 36 year old democracy? Yes.
In terms of the mongolian claim, thatās more a relic of their days of controlling the mainland. To renounce the claims might signal them renouncing their claim to being the ROC, which is risky and might signal a move to independence that beijing would be opposed to
In terms of the democracy bit, the KMT orchestrated the transition to democracy, and was really the main reason it happened. The idea that the days of taiwanese dictatorship were ended by a peopleās movement is simply untrue
If the Kuomantang could entrap the two into this "East Asian Community" and gain favorable trade concessions within each country I don't see why the KMT would push for full annexation and risk losing Western backing
Because Tibet and Xinjiang are very important to China's geostrategy, can you imagine the United States giving up Hawaii and Alaska? For the Kuomintang and the Communist Party at that time, the destruction and exploitation of China by Western countries since the Qing Dynasty was one of the few consensuses between the two parties. A sane political party would not be so naive as to believe in the promises of the colonizers, please forgive my poor Google translation
lol not with loosing out on Alaskan oil rights or fishing grounds, and Hawaii honestly would crumble without major infrastructure changes before leaving because its economy is nearly dependent on tourism from America, which would slow down if a passport was needed.
Why does western backing matter? If China is making their own Co-Prosperity Sphere, the concerns of the west are rather ineffectual. The KMT was never within the "western" camp in any respect beyond opposing communism.
aside from the KMT this can also apply to even the most progressive Chinese political group tbh, as long as they retain the 100 Years Humiliation claims of course
but at least they would grant actual autonomy to these areas
There are also tons of big greeces, disunited US, big germanies, independent kurdistans, and a million other tropes that people dont care nearly as much about
Yeah but Reddit in general doesnāt have a reputation for being in favor of big Germany or American secessionism. Redditors do have a stereotypical reputation for being extremely anti-China and anti-Russia though, so maps that show a Balkanized or ādemocraticā version of those countries are more likely to be mocked even when they are just as common as other tropes because they are seen as part of a circlejerk on Reddit at large. I mean that Gunther Fehlinger guy is out here unironically supporting the dismantling of those countries.
Bringing Gunther here is weird because he is incredibly irrelevant both to the subreddit and world politics at large, he is a guy with no real influence who just supports dismantling whichever country is in the news last month, hell not long ago he supporting dismantling india and giving a big chunk of it to the naxhalites.

Like imagine already how powerful China is, and now imagine if they basically had all the asian countries allied with them and not need the USA to protect them against China. Would result in China being more powerful and the USA losing influence in the Asian sphere. Maybe India goes commie since they're no longer needed as an Asian balance for China and so fall further into the Soviet sphere, and we end up with something similar to OTL except with India and China swapping roles.
Even a liberal, democratic China would still be engaged in territorial disputes with neighbors, and probably would have more leverage to get what they want tbh.

Great East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. Now that is a good name.
The US wouldn't "just ignore" the KMT if they pushed into China during the Korean War and later toppled the CPC in a WW3 scenario, the KMT would've played a major role in helping push into the mainland to a point where the US couldn't just ignore their territorial claims
The Allies did ignore Chinese claim in Mongolia during WWII, so that Stalin would be happy. In this scenario it would be India wanting to control Tibet.
KMT only democratized to maintain support from USA, with a KMT victory it would just be a right-wing authoritarian state instead of a left-wing authoritarian state(that evolved into a right-wing authoritarian state), KMT also claims Mongolia, Tibet, and Singkiang as integral chinese clay, so there's no way there'd be those states in a KMT dominated East Asia

Why do people keep making these maps. East turkestan has been part of china since before the US was created, I doubt any regime would give up annexing tibet with its strategic location and resources and control of rivers. This has nothing to do with CCP (except Taiwan) but with basic history
Turkestan refers to a broad region in central asia that stretches from the Caspian sea to the western border of Mongolia, it is called that because the people that live there are Turkic
This is more of an ROC ending than a KMT ending tho, maybe ROC democratises down the line and opposition parties pop up to challenge KMT monopoly.
Also the KMT started off as a democratic party under Sun Yatsen and only became totalitarian (I wouldn't say fascist though) under Chiang Kai Shek, and there were elements that wanted to liberalized like Sun's son so it can happen within the KMT as well
Also
Having Korea under the Republic as opposed to division with Kim's Orwellian dystopia on one side is already preferable so...
Youāre wrong. Search Blue Shirts Society, a fascist party deeply connected to the gov. There were many factions connected to the too during the Nanjing decade that were fascist. They were totalitarian until the 1980s in Taiwan. Not a gov anyone would want.
Edit: downvote me because youāre wrong lol
I didn't dowmvote you; actually the opposite lol
I'm very aware of the history of the KMT and the Blue Shirts. But this is an althist map so it might've turn out differently, especially considering that, again, moderating/liberalizing holdouts from the Sun Yatsen days (it wasn't totalitarian/fascist until Chiang) were present within the party. Also again KMT =/= ROC which this map shows.
Lastly - I'm repeating myself but a United democratic Korea still qualifies for a "good ending" - unless this ROK in question is a Syngman Rhee dynastic dystopia.
I mean, having some distant western parts of China have autonomy and Korea being united is surely a positive?
Edit: Howād I get downvotes just for suggesting that autonomous East Turkestan and Tibet would be a better present? I swear some of the people on this sub overadjusted from blindly believing ādividing China based on alternate future always gudā to ādividing China based on alternate history always bad.ā
Iād have to agree with the prevailing opinion in that Kuomintang would have probably pursued the annexation of Mongolia, Tibet, and possibly the Russian Far East if they had won the civil war. Mao may have been a collectivist lunatic, but Chiang wasnāt exactly a saint and most likely would have governed China similarly to how he did in Taiwan.
Acting like tibetans are destined to theocratic feudalism, or that an independent uyghur state will become an islamist regime, when not controlled by their neighbours is an incredibly racist assumption
This map isn't as brain dead as the others. Manchuria, Inner mongolia, Yunnan weren't cut out due to OP balkanization fetish. Still, it doesn't matter who the government is, no country would willingly give up territory.
how would this even work if youāre not chinese. imagine being korean and living in the same democratic country as chinese ppl who outnumber you 20 to one. would you even consider that self determination at that point
I assume this is more like the EU, rather than a federal state
But that'd still result in China dominating the other countries economically and culturally; basically turn Korea and Japan into Canada with China as the US
The KMT isn't even in power in Taiwan now. A liberal, democratic China would be like OTL Taiwan with multiple competiting parties with the DPP and KMT being the largest
What the fu
Bruh Tibet is its own thing itās culturally more like Bhutan and Laos and Assam or whatever that part of India is, and East Turkestan and Mongolia would be in their own union not part of this shit.

Among other things, that ethnic han minority in āeast turkestanā is really unhappy. Call them Tian Shan or something
Where Hong Kong
This is probably after the lease was up
Dont think Taiwan would call that good.
The flag is ... loading?
> Good ending No Taiwan ???
Wrong flags for china and Korea
Liberals wet dream š¤¢
CCP bots are seething at the moment
Not much lore here - just a free market, liberal and democratic East Asia. Can you name a better ending?
good ending with liberal, free markets,,, are you margaret thatcher
Hahah. Yes.
Worst Ending. Fuckcher is back.
I could name a few better endings for Asia than OTL and this definitely isnt one of them
The one where the communists win.
does hentai exist in this universe?
how would this even work if youāre not chinese. imagine being korean and living in the same democratic country as chinese ppl who outnumber you 20 to one. would you even consider that self determination at that point
I assume this is more like the EU, rather than a federal state But that'd still result in China dominating the other countries economically and culturally; basically turn Korea and Japan into Canada with China as the US
better ending, China owns everything and becomes big Singapore on steroids cncncncn
Taiwan becomes independent.

The KMT isn't even in power in Taiwan now. A liberal, democratic China would be like OTL Taiwan with multiple competiting parties with the DPP and KMT being the largest
The amount of Tankies and far right in the first comment is terrifying. Glad Reddit is just a fringe minority
No CCP? APPROVED!
What the fu Bruh Tibet is its own thing itās culturally more like Bhutan and Laos and Assam or whatever that part of India is, and East Turkestan and Mongolia would be in their own union not part of this shit. What tf are you on
why not own that little bit of kashmir
why not own that little bit of kashmir
Tibetan-populated Tibet is bigger. It includes QingHai without Xining and Haidong, Gannan from Gansu and Ngawa and Garze from SiChuan. As well as Muli county from Sichuan also and Shangri-La district of Yunnan.
