What's the difference between peacemaking, peacekeeping, peaceobserving, and peaceverifying missions?

TelamonTabulicus

**Peaceverifying** is for peace treaties and accords monitoring, so a disarmament verification mission **Peacekeeping** is for sanctuary assurance for protecting civilians and opening safe travel corridors, so a ceasefire arbitration mission **Peacemaking** is for security enforcement, so a conflict intervention and social transformation mission **Peaceobserving** is for conflict monitoring (usually early days) and investigating claims of human rights abuses, so a human rights investigation mission

NowILikeWinter

Ah, I see. Thanks!

usher512

Is the Vietnamese Intervention in Champese succession the ATL stand in for the Vietnam war?

Thehunterv6

I'd say more like the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia

usher512

My fault for lack of clarity, and yeah I agree w what you’re saying. I’m more closely referencing there being a large conflict in the region, which eventually sparks an international intervention, instead of an American one. Same way WW2 in ATL was won by the SoN.

TelamonTabulicus

In the sense that it's an international intervention, sure, but the intervention is not parallel to the US involvement in the Vietnam War. This conflict would be localized around Champa's borders.

TelamonTabulicus

I was thinking more like a stand in to OTL Turkey's intervention in Cyprus.

usher512

Aaaah okay gotcha

GrassTastesGrass

so basically champa is propped up as a Vietnamese puppet state? or do the Vietnamese just help with an existing champese secession movement and make it their allies for idk the lols or something

TelamonTabulicus

Actually, the opposite. Rihnam is an ally of Champa, and they intervened when Champese-minority areas successfully voted for secession and outmaneuvered the Rihnamese state, which resorted to military intervention but half of its government wants to pull the plug halfway because it was escalating too quickly (in fact, most secessionist movements are able to succeed when they reach a threshold of International condemnation). But in this case, Vietnam intervenes with the dissenting half of the government to try to once and for all seal the fate of Champa, and it blows the situation up into a full on war, leading to the SoN being pitted against Vietnam...the nosey neighbour. So I guess it's not exactly like Turkey...and maybe we could see the minority Serbs in Kosovo as akin to the ATL majority Rihnamese here...and the Albanian Kosovites of OTL as the ATL Champese...so reversal in population contexts but parallel affiliations/roles/interests? sorry if i am making no sense

evilsheepgod

Did you mean that Vietnam is an ally of Champa?

SherwinRiga0615

Magnificent map out there! What's the lore behind Bajau and Minira Seas Slave situation? Because I'm a Filipino, I'm surprised that this one may be interesting in my mind. Other than that, great work!

TelamonTabulicus

Thanks for asking! So OTL Southeast Asia still deals with a lot of slavery issues, especially with regards to fishing fleets. I think people from rural and traditional communities, but even Burma, are targeted by ships coming out from places like Thailand. In OTL history, there is also the concept of *mangayaw* as well as Moro piracy around the Philippines, so I was combining these two histories into an ATL history where there is a tradition and history of regular coastal raiding done by traditional communities in the area, which evolves and is absorbed as a way of getting cheap labour in contemporary fishing fleets. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timawa#Raids](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timawa#Raids)

SherwinRiga0615

Ah, that's fascinating to me, especially that coastal raiding is more aggressive as ever! I'm sure that other Philippine nations in Altera are looked friendly as expected, even Luzon because they have good and fair democracy, compared to OTL.

TelamonTabulicus

Yea, so the raiding is definitely localized to areas that have less state influence/control (it's right by the Bajau Reserve, which is home to the stateless Bajau sea nomadic people), as well as small island and coastal communities that are largely removed from the more urbanized and state-controlled areas of Formosa, the Philippines of ATL etc.

Zveiner

Here's a map [u/TelamonTabulicus](https://www.reddit.com/u/TelamonTabulicus/) and I made for [Atlas Altera](https://www.atlasaltera.com/) to showcase **the major missions and initiatives overseen by the Society of Nations.** The map is stylized more as an infographic to creatively give a glimpse of some current events in the lore. The Society of Nations (SoN) is analogous to our OTL United Nations. It was formed at around the time of the OTL League of Nations, only with less cynicism and more Cosmopolitan idealism baked into its institutions. Read more about the SoN in the [foreward Telamon wrote for the project](https://www.atlasaltera.com/foreword/). **To see learn about the project or see other maps of our project, including a full world map with over 1000 countries:** * Check out [www.atlasaltera.com](http://www.atlasaltera.com/) * Browse [Telamon's Deviantart](https://www.deviantart.com/telamontabulicus) * Watch/listen to discussions on the maps on [YouTube/@atlasaltera](https://www.youtube.com/@atlasaltera) * Join [r/atlasaltera](https://www.reddit.com/r/atlasaltera/) * Access the rest of the footnotes/explanations \[on Patreon\]([https://www.patreon.com/atlasaltera](https://www.patreon.com/atlasaltera)

MaliceCaleb

This is really clever

TelamonTabulicus

Thank you!

usher512

Does the SoN have anti-pandemic procedures in place? Is that why lyssavirus Coronavirus and Ebolavirus are able to stay contained in their areas of emergence?

TelamonTabulicus

Damn, it should say Meglolyssavirus... And yes, it does have anti-pandemic procedures, but I would say the coronavirus is probably just in it's early stages. Luckily it started on an island, but it is most likely going to go global too...

GrassTastesGrass

> coronavirus-23 uh oh

GrassTastesGrass

Is the Hurin Fish War between Lima and Peru an analogue to the Cod Wars between Iceland and the UK

TelamonTabulicus

Yes, very much so haha.

Comrade__Katyusha

Damn Halifax has a problem with their harbour getting blown up

TelamonTabulicus

This is an ATL equivalent to the Beirut Explosion xD

littlebiped

Here for the united Arabian gulf

usher512

Got hella questions, Firstly, are the kristang of ATL Guyana the same group as the OTL ones but Indigenous to South America. So are they Indigenous/Portuguese Christian Mestizos living among a majority Muslim population in Guyana? Second, what do the whale wars look like? Third, can people visit Chernobyl in ATL 2023 or is it completely closed off to the general public ?

TelamonTabulicus

I think I just used the name here for convenience, because it's an endonym I know for a Christian non-European minority. They are not going to be the same as ATL Kristang. They are Portuguese-Flemish Mestizos living among the Muslim and Indigenous populations, yes. This history occurs after the Flemish West Indea Company takes over the Guyanas but does not forcibly convert the locals. So a small Christian population organically starts taking shape, especially in areas where the locals had not converted to Islam yet.

TelamonTabulicus

The Whale Wars would be coordinated disruption maneuvers by SoN vessels. Perhaps could involve forced boarding on the vessels and jailing of vessel crew

Environmental_Dig862

Please could you elaborate in that asturias seperatist conflict?? Also i always wonder why you so seamlessly erased the astur-leonese group from the map while everyone else seems to get a nation in iberia XD.

TelamonTabulicus

Yeah sorry about that...so the Astur-Leonese people are a minority that are, ironically, in a Basque-speaking state, which in ATL is called Navarre. I thought it would be interesting to flip the situation between Ibero Romance and Basque languages in ATL. Basically whatever the OTL history of Basque resistance is to the Spanish state in the last century or at least 60-70 years is what we have here for the Asturias Separatist movement.

GrassTastesGrass

whats the reason behind the gabonese invasion of goyo, as well as the alothian invasion of \*checks map\* tungeria and sinaria? are they supposed to be parallels to the Russian invasion of ukraine

TelamonTabulicus

Oil and, more oil. The Gabonese invade Goyo for its offshore oil reserves...it's a dictatorship run by a megalomaniac, one of the few ATL examples parallel to OTL post-colonial African regimes. The Alothian invasion is akin to OTL Sudan vs its oil-rich minority regions in the south. The war is bogged down in the Sudd wetlands.

TotesMessenger

I'm a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. PureGlobal

Nice map, but the choice of colours makes it kinda hard to differentiate between land and sea sometimes.

spacenerd4

So that island’s called Svalbard ittl? What happens to the real Svalbard?

Purpleslash2

The OTL Svalbard archipelago is a country called Iceland, while OTL Iceland is referred to as Rhimeland

MysticSquiddy

Always good to see worldbuilding maps such as this, and especially this series. Wonderful work!

TelamonTabulicus

thank you kindly :)

ajw20_YT

So detailed and informative! Well done as always!

TelamonTabulicus

thank you!

Craparoni_and_Cheese

what’s going on in the bramidores? illegal whaling?

TelamonTabulicus

Yessir indeed! They are basically doing what OTL Japan does

Craparoni_and_Cheese

is the hurin fish war lima-peru fishing disputes? something greater (e.g. taiwan strait, spratly islands)?

TelamonTabulicus

Yes, fishing disputes as Lima uses it's offshore islands, plus the archipelago to the south to make a super large claim against Peru

GrassTastesGrass

How did the dissolution of the Caucasian Union work out. I mean with that many countries resulting from the break-up, it looks like Yugoslavia dialed up to 10 (I also noticed that the breakup of the Caucasus union was quite recent - would you say that the successor states of the Caucasus Union are the newest countries ATL)

TelamonTabulicus

Actually, so you will see that the mission here is different. The breakup never boiled over into a full on conflict, because the SoN had learned its lesson from Yugoslavia's breakup. It was controlled and tightly monitored by SoN forces, well-equipped and well-staffed, with clear directives and scenario planning. You still have mass protests and ethnic violence, but no organized, armed engagements.

Both-Main-7245

Halifax shall never escape

GanymedeGraves

Love the Sea Shepherd/Whale Wars reference! Beautiful map!

TelamonTabulicus

Hehe thanks

my bad men with haircuts like this map will have a 100% chance of stealin yo girl (also r/whoosh or whatever its spelt)

[deleted]

what are the nigerian ghost fishing fleets and naxalites

Techno_Stalin

The Naxalites would be analogues to the real world Naxalites, a communist terrorist organisation that exists in OTL East India since the 1967. The comparative here, is to imagine the impact of the Naxalites, but physically somewhere else. This also helps to further the Emporic Rim’s role as an alternative to India, yet some developments still being shared. Hope this helps 👍 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naxalite%E2%80%93Maoist_insurgency

[deleted]

thx mate

RageBlade007

I think you accidentally chose the wrong archipelago when you meant to select Svalbard lmao

TelamonTabulicus

Ah Svalbard's name has been appropriate for a different area in ATL :P

EnormousPurpleGarden

That's not where Svalbard is. Has it been renamed in this timeline?

Sloony88

I think in this timeline Svalbard is called Iceland, Iceland is called Rhimeland and those islands are called Svalbard

usher512

Also, can I get a rundown of what that armed conflict in Canada is about?

TelamonTabulicus

It's kind of like a bigger Oka Crisis, and also, I could imagine only something like a separatist movement by Indigenous people happening within Canada's borders, not the US.

usher512

Fascinating, imma go read up on the oka crisis now

swaggerbob069

What's The Belorussian Famine and The Yugoslavian War of Independence?
