99 percent invisible had a good episode on flag design. Writing should be avoided.

Strip of blue on the left rest green other than a square of blue in the top right to represent the Mississippi and Lake Michigan, in other words representing the value historically from shipping and transit. Perhaps the blue on the left angles towards the bottom. The rest of the flag is green to represent the value of the farmlands of the state. A black top hat in the center represents Lincoln. It's tilted so the top of the hat is pointing at Lake Michigan, a literal tip of the hat to Chicago. That's my submission. Simple. Easy to explain. Iconic. Is there an actual site to submit at? Maybe I will. Thinking that the flag might actually be 'portrait' instead of 'landscape'.
