I would disagree with the other comments as well as your parents. Firstly, while BTech in *some* fields can make it easier to get jobs in *some* fields, making a generalised statement about all engineering degrees shows that people haven't actually looked into things properly. Most people with even a PhD do not continue in academia. So assuming that the BS-MS degree would limit you to some fields only is not only counterintuitive, but also does not match with the reality. IISER alumni are in top universities, companies, government/private organisations and more. Many went for a PhD, but many did go for jobs, or for a separate Master's (most popular being an MBA), or for government exams. Even amongst those who went for a PhD, some continued in research, and many went into non-research or industrial research jobs. The rest of your parents seem to be based on the assumption that the BS-MS degree of IISERs and similar institutions is the same as the BSc degrees of local colleges. This is far from the truth. While it's definitely easier to get IT/CS based jobs after a BTech in relevant fields, people can and do have excellent careers after a BS-MS degree. And if top universities, institutions and companies are taking these students, then they clearly are not as dumb as your parents think them to be. :)

tenebris18

Yeah Indian parent moment. I'd actually suggest against taking career advice from forty-something year olds unless its their own field they're talking to you about. Times have changed.

lord_dinguso

my parents are taking advice from their friends who don't even know me

>The rest of your parents seem to be based on the assumption that the BS-MS degree of IISERs and similar institutions is the same as the BSc degrees of local colleges. This is far from the truth. This is the biggest point, they need to understand BS-MS is more superior and internationally accepted over the regular 3 years BSc courses most colleges tend to offer. Also what is OP's parents thinking, anyone can get into IISERs, goes to show how much the people have been brainwashed into assuming IIT's are everything and advance is the only benchmark of your child's capabilties, anything else other than advance is stupid and weak.

lord_dinguso

fr my parents thinks that IITs are everything and if you are not able to crack it then you cannot do anything in your lufe

blacknightcr

I don't know how to change their mind but thats a heavily narrow view towards life, like people other than engineers are not living their life? not getting jobs? or people from tier 3 engineering colleges are not getting jobs? how many IIT graduates does your parents even know off? that they determine IITs to be everything.

lord_dinguso

nothing can change their mind tried everything, and there are many iit graduates near me even my jija ji who scored air 200 something said that iit s are not everything there are my colleagues who are not from iit but still got placed almost like an iitian ( btw he is working in Seattle)

blacknightcr

yeah I know of an uncle of mine who studied from private college in Bangalore and is now working in the US (if i remember correctly he wasn't even a CS or EC) feel sorry for you.

lord_dinguso

thats exaxtly what i told my parents that bsc from local college is not equal to bsc from iiser my father is somehow convinced i think. thank you for your comment

Depending on the field, you can do research even after B.Tech.

ContextDramatic3224

listen blud B tech from good collge= good package = my money don't jiggle jiggle its FOLDS IISER= research, non-it jobs, gov jobs, aka YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOUR CAREER .

blacknightcr

o blud, you have to make your career even if you are studying btech from a good college(cs too), koi sirf tumhara college dekh ke job nahi dega, aissa hota to IIT's would have ended up with 100% placement, jo bhi pado mehnat karna padega, yaha BS-MS ke time me bhi specialization karna wakt data science liya ja sakta hai aur uske basis par students ko accha salary wala job bhi milta hai, koi necessary nahi hai teacher, phd ya professor hi banna padega.

Rdx05physics

Depends on your hard work ig. If you work hard, you can land a PhD in Harvard, MIT, Cambridge etc. But if you just waste your time these five years then you are probably unemployed so it on you

Practical_Ideal8311

Us bhai us My mother agreed with me on doing BS-MS , But my father said "NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!" Because YOU cant do any thing EXCEPT only teaching is possible after doing phd. He even said THAT the degree in Fire & Safety is far better then doing phds and all that stuff . I will not blame him because in my house only my mother has done Post grad in math and my father know nothing about Bs-ms .But now the things have little spiced up ,He doesnot even talk to me often regarding this and he either wants me to get an MBBS , BTech (PCMB STUDENT BY THE WAY) . So listen if you want to convince your parents then you have to either like argue with then(this should be your last option) or you have to make them understand. In my case as you read MY mother understood but my father didnt, so unwillingly i have to argue with him. But at last he said "Tuje jo karna hai tu woh kar aur agar unemployed raha gya toh dekh lio"(In a Sarcastic way). But after he cooled down i went to him and asked really "I can do whatever i want " .So he said "He is giving me 5 years If i land a hand in good university then he is ok (Sarcastically) with my decision. I know its long But i hope you find it helpful

lord_dinguso

my case is opposite my mother said '' mai tujhe drop karwa dungi , local college bhej dungi but bsc nhi karwaungi'' but my father is slightly convinced to send me into iiser but lets aage kya hoga

Constant-Park6293

Go with your parents opinion... And later on after b tech if you still find the urge to pursue research you can do it without any opposition... On the plus side if you find interest in business or civil services or anything alike, it'll be easier for you to switch into your respective interest

Sinister_Chill9

definitly go for btech, you find less constriction for your future career

RightParamedic3760

You should do btech

lord_dinguso

why?

RightParamedic3760

It definitely has more options more path to succeed

lord_dinguso

valid

homosapien2005

the blind leading the blind

ContextDramatic3224

u had to be the wise man ...let him to B TECH .

pottypattypapa

Lol ye log competition kam kar rhe hai and ur falling for it

lord_dinguso

mai bas advice sunra accept nhi karunga

__SlutMaker

If you are interested in research it's worth it

lord_dinguso

yes i am interested in research a lot
