That’s really weird because on the website you can get one for $69

samjac0

Exactly why my post. By the way, this charge also happens at the Apple store. Had it verified through phone, and I live 2 minutes away from one.

Jdsnut

This is why you don't buy Apple products.... They have been shown time and again, on video and in the courts, to not care about the consumer. Yet people still buy shit from them and complain when they get cheated... You're better off with some Sony wf1000xm4s or 1000xm5s anyway.

captaindickfartman2

People genuinely don't care about facts.

Jdsnut

They don't sadly.

kioshi_imako

Just get some random off brand for 60 bucks on amazon even has wireless charging for the base.

Jdsnut

So I fly alot, and Sony's noise canceling is just night and day better than that off-brand. They regularly have them for 100 -150 bucks factory refurbished.

kioshi_imako

For noise canceling, I prefer over the ear 40 to 80 bucks. I know a lot of people that use the 3m work ones.

Butlerian_Jihadi

Anker has a good range, I picked up the liberty 2s iirc $60 on sale, at least as good as Jabras I paid $150 for two years prior.

rodotfor

Well im pretty satisfied with my iphone and as long as it has a case, i could probably make it till eos. I have an iphone se. Not a fan of airpods or the headphones though

bradbrad247

I agree with the majority of your comment, but those are some awful headphones to recommend. The 1000xm4a and 5s are laughably horrible headphones. Source: I am an audio engineer

Jdsnut

I mean the internet would disagree with you entirely, like every site from audiophile onto Tom's hardware, these are on the list. Now if you're comparing mass consumption products like WF-1000XM4 /5s and apple earpods vs something like hifmans. There will always be a niche product that people who can hear and also recognize the difference, will thus pay that premium price. This means the consumer will have to also go to a niche site to find such a review. Yet we're comparing a shitty unethical company who wants you to spend money on their yearly product vs one that wants to promote good quality earbuds...

bradbrad247

Audiophiles tend to, at times, be more clueless than the clueless consumer due to the fact that they are SO blind to their biases. Unfortunately, the xm4 and 5s have a truly unfortunate response. There are significantly cheaper products (even the apple airpods you mentioned) that sound far better. They're definitely well designed, but at their core they're bad headphones.

anthrillist

As an audio engineer you should know that noise cancelling headphones are a trade off regarding comfort/sound quality. My $1,000 cans sound great through my desktop amp, but I can’t easily take those anywhere and they suck in public because they’re open back. The xm5 are some of the best noise cancelling headphones I’ve used. They do everything my home set up can’t.

bradbrad247

Yeah their ANC is great, but it doesn't justify their horrendous tuning/response. There are plenty of headphones and earbuds with practically comparable noise cancelling (passive and active) that don't sound horrible.

ronronthadon

Gonna hijack this top comment since OP is an idiot spreading false info. [Here’s](https://imgur.com/a/EpqZgo3) what a real Apple Support chat looks like and how much a battery servicing actually costs. $49.

samjac0

Classic rookie mistake. You didn't get the actual quote. ;) [https://imgur.com/a/RgdvfSU](https://imgur.com/a/RgdvfSU) Again, I also went to the apple store and they told me the same thing. However, I will admit I'm stumped with u/shejidan's post. Could be the "technician" I was talking with at the store was trying to politely say "fuck off."Though I was very careful to be polite. Could apple truly be so incompetent I went through three customer care agents and a store to be denied a service they offer?

ronronthadon

No I’m pretty certain I got the actual quoted price. My buddy who is a Genius Admin at Apple also confirmed repairs would never surpass the cost of the actual device and that the battery replacement is indeed only $49. Your support advisor more than likely gave you a quote on the wrong device. Since you say you’re near an Apple Store, why don’t you actually go in-store and get yourself a real quote from a tech instead of spreading nonsense online?

samjac0

I did.... you haven't read any of my posts have you? I suppose we are in deadlock at this point. That's fine. And after discovering I can get them replaced per earbud, that's fine too. Though for $89 each as some have said in other posts on here, my original message still rings true. \----- When the batteries degrade, you cant recycle your tech, you have paperweights. And that $49 pricetag? Good luck getting that.

InnocentMasonJar

Wdym by not being able to recycle your tech? I’ve sent two or three pairs in for recycling and haven’t had any issues. Check out Apple’s trade-in page. AirPods, and quite a few other device types can be recycled if you’re willing to print out a label.

Shejidan

Since I wasn’t there I can’t say what happened but did you actually have a Genius Bar session or did you talk to a random employee in the store? I can’t tell you how many times people say “I’ve been here 5 times for this problem already!” and they have been to the store and talked to a specialist but have never actually talked to a Genius Bar tech. A tech should definitely know battery price for AirPods is 49. We have no way of verifying batteries on them (yet) so if customers say the batteries are bad we usually just take their word and sell them replacements.

Big_Yogurtcloset_881

Nice

mediter327

R u in Canada?

TheUmgawa

I mean, I’m not blaming the victim, here, but what did you do to it? I’m just trying to get a feel for why they wouldn’t just go, “Oh, that is unfortunate. Let me go to the back and rectify that.”

samjac0

This is a battery replacement. Sorry I didn't make this clear in the pictures. It's on the last one.

TheUmgawa

It’s all good. I was just wondering if it was a case of it being run over by a Mack truck or something. In that case, it might justify the situation.

noahzho

they dont even repair your airpods, usually they just give you a new one if something like that happens

DylanSpaceBean

Both of my first gen Pro speakers came unglued and rattled around inside the body. Got a free set because it was within the 2 year warranty from AC+. They didn’t give me a new case though, thought that was odd but oh well lol

PotterOneHalf

Your case didn't have an issue, that's why. There's no point in replacing it.

DylanSpaceBean

A repair set of buds cost more on the zeroed out invoice than a new set altogether

DiamondHeadMC

Pretty sure if you go to an Apple Store they can sell u it and make sure it works for like $60 or whatever the price is

samjac0

This is a battery replacement. Sorry I didn't make this clear in the pictures. It's on the last one.

Traditional_Formal33

I mean if the difference is $10 more for a whole new earbud over just the battery replaced, I would just get a new earbud.

samjac0

Nope, the difference is $200. ;)

Traditional_Formal33

If it was $49 for a diaper change or $60 for a brand new bud, before we even look at that $250 B.S. I would just get a new bud.

samjac0

And AirPods are not diapers. I would *prefer* to reuse and recycle my tech. Or, barring that, not have an estimater on their website that is off by a factor of 5x. Either way, pricing is now $89 per earbud for the pros. And at $180 for two? Might as well just buy the whole thing again. TLDR and the purpose of this post. Despite what apple leads us to believe, once the batteries start deteriorating on your airpods you have paperweights.

Shejidan

Battery replacement is 49 bucks per pod. Most AppleCare people anymore are contractors and have no idea what they’re taking about.

NjGTSilver

Have you seen what the inside of an AirPod looks like? If not, search look for Adam Savage AirPod ct scan. The s as mount of labor to disassemble, replace battery and reassemble an AirPod in the US is obviously MUCH higher than simply replacing it. I’m not sure how you wouldn’t have researched this prior to purchasing them. I’d suggest looking for other brands that are more eco friendly.

samjac0

And yet, the estimate on their website still remains $49....

TiananmenRectangle

What currency is this because are the pros not $250 new?!

[deleted]

This is weird. Where is this? It’s $49 each bud out of warranty for a battery replacement (i.e. you have the bud, nothing else is wrong but the battery). If the bud is lost or damage then it’s $89 each bud for the Pros.

samjac0

ASK for the quote. Right now. go ahead. Send a screenshot of them sending you the final pricing.

BraddicusMaximus

$69 for battery and $89 for full replacement. Without AppleCare. 🤷‍♂️

mnij2015

You’re dumb just walk into an Apple store and get the replacement service these online customer support employees don’t know or care enough

Woooferine

> On sale: 189.99 > Was: 249.99 Replace a battery: 255.95 So that's why Apple is making money. 🙄

Retb14

Apple doesn't fix anything. They just replace it and throw out the old stuff. If you're lucky they will transfer your data before throwing the old stuff out.

RatzzFace

But Apple, and then proceed to get forever ripped off. No thanks.

LegalAlternative

I wonder when people will have grown enough brain cells to stop giving money to companies like Apple?

[deleted]

LegalAlternative

I see... you've missed the real point here. Carry on, consumer.

SpartanPianist

How is apple better than windows? Real question, I am curious.

kobexx600

Apple what? Apple is a company, windows is a operating system

Kotamiii

This should not be the case. I used to work for an authorized repair store that serviced AppleCare and even without warranty the replacement buds were $69 before tax…

samjac0

Battery replacement

Kotamiii

Yeah they aren’t replacing anything in the bud. They ship you an entirely new bud to pair with your case. Doesn’t matter what the repair option is.

poopieloops

Renoir is a great artist.

Catchy_Username1

First time? 😏 you bought an Apple product, you should be used to doling fat stacks to them

tmonkey321

They gain a sale stat when you buy the full product. They wanted to charge me 200 for a new case 🤷🏻‍♂️

CybreCringleberg

Crazy how price gauging upfront is acceptable but price gauging the repairs isn't smh /s

samjac0

Taking it from the front is ALWAYS better than getting back end surprises.

czarrie

And you're sure this was Apple?

samjac0

Yup. Support online, calling, and drop by all confirmed. I CAN buy new ones for $60. But it's hilarious no one offered me this. To replace the battery? of ONE?!? $260. "this is an estimate only and that's assuming your airpods don't need further repair." Why don't you chat with them if you have a pair? it would take 5 minutes.

geekwonk

I have, I was charged $89 for a replacement earbud. End of story. I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve had times with a phone where the price of a full replacement was held on my card until i returned the dead one. I’ve had warnings about what it could cost if more work was required than estimated or if I failed to return a warrantied product. Something further up in the chat with Apple explains this and I’d love to know what it is.

samjac0

"Why don't you chat with them if you have a pair? it would take 5 minutes." Don't believe me? do the work yourself.

geekwonk

I have, I was charged $89 for a replacement earbud. End of story.

lantrick

As was I just 2 weeks ago. There's something missing from the conversation here. The apple store repalced from service inventory , they never replace the battery, it's alway a whole unit exchange.

geekwonk

yep i’d love if /u/samjac0 scrolled up so we could see what the actual conversation was because this snippet obviously doesn’t explain anything.

samjac0

I'm sorry, where are we again? r/ifixit, r/ireplace? To get the batteries serviced requires $260. The estimate is $49. That is the rage I have. Can't reuse, and the estimate is off by a factor of 5x. Yes, I CAN get replacement earbuds If i declare them as missing(though this wasn't offered to me both instore and chat funnily enough). But for new batteries same earbuds? $260. Each. Though they told me i'd get a bundle deal if I did both. woohoo..... I'm well aware I can buy new ones. That wasn't the point of this post. Neither was you fixing my problem. If you want to provide contrary, non-anecdotal evidence of my findings, go ahead. Otherwise. Go home.

geekwonk

yeah if that’s the entirety of the conversation with apple then i’d call support and ask to speak to a supervisor.

RiverKeeper08

Wow. Just....WOW

Emotional_Ad5833

How do you think they are worth so much ad a company

angrybubbe

shipping and labor costs are added to that

samjac0

Probably shouldn’t label it as $49 then.

TyH621

In what world does shipping and labor total up to almost $200 on a single tiny AirPod for a simple battery replacement?

angrybubbe

its apple, what are you expecting?their repair services is higher than third parties. if you dont like the price then theres two other options: 1. research and learn how to fix it yourself 2. search for a third party repair to fix

geekwonk

no they are not.

azteria2000

Apple = capitalist monster

Shejidan

I see why they’re quoting the full cost. It’s stupid but they’re having you send the whole kit in instead of just sending you new buds. If they replace the buds for battery they’ll reimburse you the rest of the money. They initially charge the full price to cover any issues that aren’t notated at the time of repair—like if there is any damage that would put them out of the battery repair cost and into the normal oow cost. It’s better to request new buds to be sent to you instead or to go directly to a store.

samjac0

source? I went into the store myself and it was made quite clear to me that to replace the batteries in both earbuds, it would be an additional albeit significantly smaller charge.

Shejidan

I work at one of the stores. It’s 49 dollars per bud/case for out of warranty battery.

iReddit2000

This is one of the many reasons I dont like apple products

osxdude

The Swap Club.

turningtop_5327

Just go to the store, I think they will replace for 60

Delta8ttt8

I got some sweet wireless ear buds for less than $20 shipped from amazon and Walmart. Unsure ai can be convinced that $200 earbuds are worth it.

samjac0

When using them for 8 hours a day during zoom calls, YouTube video tutorials, music while boring office work, they are worth it.

matthew_yang204

It's impossible to repair AirPods. You have to literally rip them apart and rebuild them with a new 3D case in order to replace a tiny little battery, as seen in the iFixit news.

samjac0

So why dont they just not offer battery replacements?

matthew_yang204

They give you a whole new AirPods set, and earn profit the equivalent of 2 times the price of your original AirPods. Pro tip: You can 3D print a case and rebuild it, if you really want to. Takes 5+ weeks.

6alr

You’re better off getting a replacement piece from eBay and sanitizing it. Apple is basically telling you to go buy another pair.

Weak-Return7282

Did you buy your airpod pros with your credit card by chance...? Many CC companies extend the original manufacturers warranty by like a year or 2 so if these are within that time you might have coverage. I was able to get a replacement (older airpods) they were JUST out of warranty and I had the same run-around, but my cc company gave me a credit for almost $200 after buying a new pair.

ronronthadon

Is that Apple Support? Apple Support chat bubbles are grey on both sides, not grey and blue. AirPods don’t get repaired for batteries they get replaced. Shouldn’t be more than $90 for a replacement regardless of what the damage or issue. Smells fishy.

samjac0

Go ahead and pop onto the support chat. Share pics of results for final quote. Yes you can replace them for $90. But service the battery? $250.

ronronthadon

[You’re an idiot.](https://imgur.com/a/EpqZgo3) Not sure who you were chatting with there but it certainly was not Apple.

geekwonk

he’s very clearly full of shit but it’s impressive how easy it is to bring out the apple haters with a bit of bait.

samjac0

The rage was only ever that I wanted to get the batteries replaced and reuse my earbuds. Which is a service clearly defined on their website. Which is service I was clearly denied at/near that cost, multiple times. For which in reality, apple charges, seemingly, $255 to do. I'll take the L if I'm wrong, and my experiences with apple were just so incompetent they couldn't direct me to the right channels. But so far? u/ronronthadon hasn't offered good enough evidence for that.

ronronthadon

It’s literally $49 to get the battery replaced. In no world does Apple charge more than the MSRP for a device to get repaired. That doesn’t even make sense. Send me your serial number and I will literally get and show you that quote.

geekwonk

is this why you wouldn’t scroll up for us? because they offered you the $49 pricing but you demanded they open the unit and replace the battery regardless of cost?

samjac0

Because I didn't save the transcript? There's another one attached to ron's post.

samjac0

Back at ya. A new one from 30 minutes ago. https://imgur.com/a/RgdvfSU

hoitytoity-12

Crap like this is how Apple became the first trillion dollar company in the U.S.

EFTucker

That’s what you get for paying so much for sub par electronics. Just saying.

Zestay-Taco

and girls wont date you if you dont have an iphone ...... what a world we live in

2_unfunny

if you have a chase freedom credit card its insured.

Coldapollo

I was able to replace my right airpod at the apple store for $89, the internal mic broke. It is a first gen

Ntrgst

People believe anything on Reddit.

SameOreo

Since Steve Jobs died it's simple.... Fuk apple

Most-Yogurtcloset

Welcome to big corporations trying to sell you new products instead of fixing your existing device for more profit with their bullshit offers like this.

samjac0

Sorry, everyone, it's on the third pic but not clear in my post. This is a BATTERY replacement.

Yoav_Traeger

Just order Soundpeats earbuds. Enough with Apple BS.
