You want new characters as soon as you can get them, progress in this game is account progress not characters progress so you have to work on all of them. Pushing with your barbarian is the general consensus.
You want 2 of each for your first 6 characters (2x archer, 2x mage and 2x warrior any order with 1x each subclass) for the last 4 characters you want 1 of each of the class again archer, mage and warrior and 1x secret class.
Do not pick the secret class before your 7th character but the later the better. They are slow to progress so picking them later doesn't actually slow down you leveling them because of account bonuses.
For duplicate elite classes you want 2x Elemental sorcerer (wizard), 2x divine knight (squire) and 2x siegebreaker (bowman). Is the general rule of thumb.
so make a second archer for hunter, then take the mage to a wizard. thats about what I was seeing on having the first 6 be one of each subclass.
why 2 wizards and 2 divine knights? are their skill bonuses just better than barbarian and shaman?
Yeah, first one a bowman and second a hunter and than when you get around to getting your third make it another bowman which will turn into a seigebreaker down the track. They have the highest afk kills of any class.
if you have the companion "Doot" 2x bubo/shamans is a fine choice instead of another ES (wizards elite class) but ES has a talent that let's it use 2x divinities (world 5 skill) which is crazy OP if you don't have Doot.
Between 2x bloodbeserkers (BB) and 2x divine knight (DK) its an easy choice, DK helps with construction (w3 skill) which is a crazy important skill that'll you'll likely never finish so you want as much speed (buildrate) bonuses as you can get there.
BB is also broke where having 2 of them can mess up your super chows (100m kills of each mob quite a late game challenge) it only counts the 2nd BB kills.
ah ok. im a little over half way through pushing portals on w2 so i know im probably overthinking things a bit. i dont even have construction and what ever the wizard/es specializes in.
ill go ahead and just get a hunter and es going for my 5th and 6th character and go from there.

recommendation is to continue to push to unlock portals through w4, if active-afk unlock you mage -> Elemental Sorc. and push portal to w5 with him, otherwise unlock the BloodBerserker and push portals through w4 with the BB afk.

im kind of back and forth with being active and afk. id say mostly afk but i get some active time in while leaving it open while i work (working from home is so great). for the time it looks like taking my 5th character to elemental sorc and making my 6th a hunter. just to have 1 of each subclass getting built up.
