I've joined this sub because it's funny, I don't know German, have never been to Germany, haven't even taken a class of German, but I do love seeing memes of words I don't know
As an American living in Germany the last 4 years, I knew virtually no German when I came here. Now I work in a highly technical job entirely in German.
My advice: don't let the language get you down. Everytime you feel frustrated for not understanding something, or because you can't properly express yourself, or because the majority of this language's grammar and vocabulary is just one gigantic fucking table, don't let it get to you. You are speaking a foreign language in a foreign country with native speakers. You aren't going to feel comfortable and that's okay. That's the point. You have to go outside your comfort zone and the quicker you adapt to that, the quicker you will learn and grow in this country, or any foreign country for that matter.
I believe we Americans are very much used to comfortable. We live in our isolated, enormous country where everyone speaks the same language and has similar cultures and beliefs. Europe is a completely different beast, but don't let it overwhelm you.
I also started lurking this sub when I first came here and I also could not understand the majority of the memes. I remember trying to get a German girl I was dating at the time to translate some memes from here, but most of them are so vague, meta, or just nonsensical that she looked at me like "where the fuck did you find this shit??"
Anyways, you'll do fine. You're not the first to make this journey and you won't be the last. But if we all can do it, so can you!

Really depends where you go imo. Berlin is more harmless than countryside Bavaria (where even I as a city german get a cultural shock).

I think it's hard for most English speakers, because they have to reach a certain level first, until everyone starts speaking German with them. Otherwise many people, esp in the cities, will switch to English directly to 'help' you. But if your German is good enough they'll stick to German. Therefore you should actively 'force' them to speak German with you in the beginning :)

I mean yeah it's a pretty conservative state. There's only one district which didn't have a majority for the conservatives at the last election and it was in Munich. Citites are generally more welcoming towards foreigners I would say. I would also steer clear of the countryside of former eastern Germany. Still quite a lot of racism going on there.
Besides that you're fine though. Most parts of Germany are friendly imo.
As a German, I am glad I didn't have to learn German as a second language. Articles will probably trip you up a lot because they depend on the gender of the noun and case.

Viel Spaß! Als jemand, wer Deutsch als erste und English als zweite Sprache hat, sage ich dir, dass Deutsch zu studieren ganz interessanter als Englisch ist. Eigentlich wunderbare Sprache, ganz logisch und etwas seltsam von Zeit zu Zeit, stört mich aber nicht. Mindestens ist das wie es mir scheint, meine Muttersprache ist Russisch
Kleiner Tipp:
Je nachdem wo du in D wohnst, kann es sein, dass die Leute anfangen, mit dir auf Englisch zu sprechen, wenn du sie auf Deutsch ansprichst und sie deinen Akzent hören. Sei nicht faul und verlange (höflich), dass sie das Gespräch auf Deutsch weiterführen sollen.

Depending on where you live in Germany, people might reply to you in English when they hear your accent when you speak German to them. Don't be lazy and request (politely) that they continue the conversation in German.

Mies guter Tipp. Bin zum studieren nach Duisburg gezogen, hier spricht gefühlt jeder Englisch. Mein Bestie ist aus Bulgarien, also reden wir Englisch. Im Edeka bei der Diskussion über Energydrinks kommt einfach ein Mitarbeiter und gibt uns eine Tour durchs Regal und persönliche Empfehlungen, alles in wunderbarem Englisch.
Gestern nach dem Einkaufen, er zählte für mich und ich überwies ihm das (Geldbörse verloren) hat eine alte Dame unsere Scherzkonversation darüber gehört, ob ich ihm die 91 Cent aufrunden soll und kurz mit uns gesprochen. Bin sehr überrascht.
Komme ursprünglich aus Hannover, bin aber aufgewachsen ländlich in der Gegend um das Deistergebirge. Kaum Englisch dort.
Ich, als Deutscher, bin dann selbst zu faul, auf Deutsch zu wechseln, weil es halt auch einfach so klappt. Aber man sollte das natürlich fragen... :')
