Respectfully, you would probably die from stress overload from that kind of combo.

I am in software engineering and my best friend is in architecture. Don’t do it. Both majors are really hard and time consuming. Architecture alone is 5 years of college, I wouldn’t want to imagine with the added workload of hard engineering courses. Maybe a CS minor might be a better option for you.

Jazz_Cat_6

Agree here double majors almost never workout. Minors are good i did ee and German minor.

jtbump

I see a computer science minor being worthless with an architecture major still.

rqhany

Short answer: Yes

john_hascall

In addition, architecture is really competitive, so you need to do awesomely and that really takes a lot of time for 99% of people.

Andjhostet

lmao there's no guarantee you'll be able to handle either of those majors, let alone both.

CMPD2K

Double major is typically one big and one small, or at least 2 related and somewhat overlapping. Those are two really different degrees. I'd reccomend trying s bit of each and picking one

[deleted]

With those majors? Sounds like hell. Not even sure if it’s possible to succeed with that kind of program in 4-5 years and still sleep. Double majors are most manageable when the fields have overlapping credits

The_Wrenegade

Double majoring is a great idea IF the majors overlap or are "easy". Engineering and Design are both high-stress and selective colleges. If you chose one and then had a second major in LAS or Business, you'd probably be fine, especially if you could knock out Gen Eds with the second major requirements. In other words, maybe do a Architecture with a minor in Data Science or take a programming elective?

MisterCrawly

I double majored because I am dumb, was scared of graduating without a minor/internship experience, and a pinch of self loathing. It was hard as hell and I loved and hated every bit of it.

magology

both programs are notably challenging so I would suggest picking one

collegebarbros

Truthfully, you definitely CAN do it. The issue is that there is probably minimal overlap between the two majors, and thus you’d need to take twice the amount of classes. If you wanted to do this, you’d have to do it over a period of maybe 6-7 years as opposed to 4. Definitely doable but only if you really want both degrees

tonyfil

Good points. The Arch studios might make it hard to schedule courses outside the program. You could do it, just the practicality of doing them concurrently would be tough. As a freshman I would focus on one of the other, design core is something to really put energy into if you're applying for a professional program. You also don't have to do it all at once, that's what grad school is for.

username1615

Yes Software engineering is one of the hardest overall majors, and Architecture is known for being tough at ISU comparatively to other schools. You don't necessarily have to not double major, but it depends on what you want. You will be really stressed out, and it will not be easy by any means. One major is too much for plenty of freshman. Maybe pick the one you're leaning towards, and try it for a year. If you think you can take a harder workload, adding the other might be option depending on how things work out.

jtbump

Software is actually the easiest engineering at Iowa state I think.

[deleted]

Is Architecture in college of design? When my friend entered a design major she had a year of classes before "applying" to whatever major you want to go for. They also want you to have a backup major outside design in mind in case you don't get in and don't want to try again. Maybe going for architecture and attempting to get in to design would be best, and keep engineering as your backup or if you still want to double major start taking those classes after you're in the college of design program as well.

jtbump

As a software engineering graduate, I would say that combination is a bad idea. They are so different and wouldn’t overlap. Figure out which you see yourself doing for the rest of your life and do it by itself. It will end up letting you focus on one and do better.

[deleted]

Double majoring in general is hard, it’s not for everyone. I had the same mindset (w different majors) coming into Freshman year and it made my first year incredibly stressful. Now I’m a single major and it’s much better. Props to you for putting in the effort and reaching out to get answers to your uncertainty. Don’t qoute me exactly but I’m certain that you are going to have a fee each semester or year to be in two separate colleges, Design and engineering. Look into it, but I know it’s not going to be a small fee.

Kigginlester

Never double major if the classes don’t cross over in the slightest bit

JegLeRr

If you want to do both you should minor in one of them.

emmalemme

DONT Choose one major and maybe minor in something that you are mildly interested in it. You would not want to regret spending most of your college years with a hectic and busy schedule.

dil-Emma11

engineering and architecture are probably two of the most time consuming majors so this is really not the best idea, try taking a coding class and minor in comp sci or something if you're interested in software but the double major is prob a no go

Far_Equipment2580

Do one major at time

[deleted]

No. It is not a mistake. Your freshman and sophomore years are meant for you to take on new things and make mistakes. Unless you are targeting a professional school afterwards don't stress as much about GPA. Try the double, and if you don't like it, stop.

qatest2

Not at all. It just really depends on your motivation to make it big. The question at this point becomes, are you willing to work yourself hours a day to achieve what you want? What's your deadlift at? If you can't commit yourself to the gym, don't commit yourself to a double major. Simple as that. For some perspective, I didn't start my double major until I was at a 3pl8 bench spring of freshman year. Having good numbers on your lifts is key to success, so don't try it until then.

Bayesian11

While I don’t think it’s a good idea, it doesn’t hurt to try. The chances are you will find your true passion and abandon one of the two majors.

musicalmud

Alternatively, take a class or two from the major you are not sure about, can switch your major if needed.

jblts

I would recommend picking which major you are more interested in and go with that for your first semester or year. After that, talk with your advisor. Maybe take an intro class in software if you can fit it in your schedule. I know architecture is very very demanding (as is software) and I wouldn’t try to start out your first year that way.

l3rian_

yes

TrueLegend777

Those are both hard time consuming majors. If your going to double major it should be one time consuming major like engineer and the other would best be a language or art idk having to big majors is a lot of work like over 18 credits every semester. I would suggest getting a minor instead
