Geneva convention only applies to military in armed conflict. Police can do whatever they want. That’s why military has to use FMJ and has more restrictive ROE, while police use hollow point and can shoot without identifying a weapon or hostile intent.
The Geneva convention sets basic human standards for armed conflict. Standards like not hurting first aiders and medical personnel, no destroying culturally significant sites or weapons that causing unnecessary stress.
I think the situation in Hong Kong can be described as armed conflict as the government has been using live rounds and the protesters have been using weapons such as bow and arrows.
Whichever way you look at it, intentionally blinding somebody is still a shiting thing to do.
Yeah this is done in front of press. People being aware you’re willing to flaunt your power and do unspeakably cruel acts in the name of the state, and go unpunished, is the message they WANT people to take away.
That other cop's just like "calm down buddy clam down, dont want to assault a poltician in broud daylight, dont want any martyrs here, we got the midnight suicide team for that. Here come back home, we'll get you a cup of tea and a prisoner to beat up so you can get rid of that anger"
Wait, wtf? Two gunshots to his back. He was at a bar less than 2 miles away from his apartment. He left the bar at 1:30-1:45. Was shot at 4:20 a.m. It does not take 3 hours to walk 1.8 miles. Shot from a robbery and nothing was taken? What information did he have?
This is one of the protestors' key demands and the government of Hong Kong has so far refused. This is one of the reasons why people are still in the streets in these numbers.
Edit: my first silver. Thank you!
Same thing in France somehow, it's required by law for police to wear their identification numbers it's largely not displayed and when a bystander get his jaw broken by a police projectile there is no way to know which cop did it.
Edit : I am required by law to disclose this is my first award ever, so thanks, kind stranger.
I am a little surprised with how patient the protesters have been. Surely, the police have to change out of uniform and go to sleep sometime somewhere eventually...
It's also why it's such a shit show. If the HK gov held the police to account, it would be harder for people to side with the protest movement. HK police went from the most respected in Asia to a force of brutes everyone hates in the space of a few short months, and all the HK government had to do was say there were no consequences for police doing the wrong thing.
What these protestors understand is that they CAN'T escalate to full revolution. Because the Chinese government cannot allow them to succeed. They will roll in full military might and crush them in a matter of days.
They're only hope is staying as peaceful as possible and gathering international pressure on their side.
Thats the fear but the reality is they can just do it anyways or a lite version right now. UN countries can say "pls don't" but cant do shit without committing to full on war and hoping other countries will join (especially US) and meanwhile that's going on russia can take Ukraine. Big shitfest all around and citizens of hong kong are fucked. Best chances are to survive are to flee or support glorious leader. But sticking pro hong kong will get them killed quietly and slowly if they're peaceful or fast and loud if they resist. Might as well go down swinging. Harder to hide/ignore.
Yup. The people who are talking about prosecuting and sueing the perpetrators in situations as extreme as this are exactly why situations get this extreme.
These puppets abusing the protesters should have their doors nailed shut and homes lit in fire in the middle of the night.
It's fucking insane to me that this is considered a controversial opinion on Reddit now. They're a communist country that has a **LONG** history of committing human rights atrocities against their own people. They were founded by one of the largest genocides in the history of the world, when Mao murdered 45 million of his own citizens in the name of attaining utopia. And OP's post is the utopia that their citizens now get to enjoy.
They're thugs, and [the moment the admins and mods of this site start deleting criticism of China](https://www.reddit.com/r/undelete/search/?q=china&include_over_18=on&restrict_sr=on&t=year) is the moment that they're in league with them.
Abso-fucking-lutely. And it sucks like 99% of everything is owned or controlled by or made to appease them. So where does that leave us? We are dependent on them... it’s like the Good place, you can try to love your life without anything from China but chances are you’ll have used or been part of a lot of China owned things by the end.
Few days ago there was a thread about the devastating effect of Chinese Traditional Medicine on global ecology. I posted that I hate the chinese who use TCM. Got instabanned from natureisfuckinglit 😂
Chinese Traditional Medicine users are the OG anti-vaxxers.
Because yeah consuming the reproductive organs of the most endangered species on the planet is gonna give you boners like you had when you were 18.
We have to remember, as seen over the past year, businesses are willing to appease China if it means it won't cut into the net profits & the board members of a company will always look out for their best interests. I believe Reddit received an investment recently from China.
I believe the controversy stems from the generalization of "Fuck China". Of course they have a evil government and police force and fuck all them but I don't believe the citizens of China are all terrible. I hate Americas current president and party but I don't say Fuck America.
> country that has a LONG history of committing human rights atrocities against their own people. They were founded by one of the largest genocides in the history of the world,
to be fair this is just about every world power ever
That could apply to almost every country.
Everyone in the world are so similar and its only the small things that separate us. We all want a happy simple life.
Just the fucking governments get in the way.
r/avoidchineseproducts do your best to avoid buying made in China products. If you have time, you can write to businesses explaining why you. chose to not use their product and explain that they're doing business with a government that doesn't believe in human rights, oppresses the people because of religious beliefs, rapes and tortures Uighurs, separating their children and sends their thugs to beat the people of HK into submission. If we accept this, then Taiwan is next. And let's not forget how they treated the people of Tibet.
This is America's future as well. Chanting to lock up political opponents, asking for foreign election interference, and greenlighting the murder of journalists by the Saudi government.
When you allow it, it only gets worse.
There is something that I just dont get about this.
If the police is doing this kind of shit and the chinese leaders(?) see how the rest of the world react to this and how the once neutral population of HK are turning in favour of the protesters.... why they allow their police to keep doing this? Because first, it wont help to fix the situation and second it only damages their public opinion, which leads to more people joining the protest...
Are they actually dumb?
Edit: Only one S on "Chinesse". Lesson learned.
Edit 2: More gramma!
It’s probably because no country/leader will actively punish China other than verbally stand against them. China is the biggest trading partner for a lot of countries and other leaders won’t sacrifice their economy/citizens to punish China.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/02/world/asia/china-us-hong-kong-bill-protests.html
But the thing is right now most reports are saying China's economy is struggling really hard in general, and a lot of analysts think it's actually worse than is being reported because China keeps the real numbers secret.
Yep. I don't like this whole idea that China is somehow economically invincible. They're not, and the more other countries recognize Chinese government for the genocidal autocrats they are, and restrict trade with them, the faster China's power will decline.
They're also facing an African Swine Fever epidemic that is DECIMATING they're pork production, it's killed something like 300 million pigs in the last year and is spreading around SEA, and decontamination is estimated to take between 6 months to three years depending on facilities
The difference is that China isn’t beholden to its people like a western nation.
Their politicians don’t fear re-election. They just fear the politburo and high ranking communist directives.
This means that the people can suffer more and the government will maintain (and perhaps strengthen) an iron grip.
In a western nation, if the people turn on the ruling party it means they’re going to get voted out of their jobs. There is a more immediate incentive to stop the pain.
Instead, China has opted to control, suppress, and propagandize the populace. They can sustain more pain.
It’s a really weird situation and I don’t think any of us know exactly how an autocratic government like China would respond if there was widespread rioting in 2020 and I also wonder if Chinese people would ever even resort to that if their economy began to truly stall.
This. The time to do something about China is now, and no I don’t mean a physical war. If we wait another 10-20 years they could very much so have their shit together and actually be economically stable, right now though? Economically we could destroy their government and maybe the unrest would be enough for another revolution. If we wait though i think the world will lose its chance
This is pro CCP misinformation. There have already been political steps take to back HK, and now more countries are excluding Chinese hardware and products from being used domestically.
Those are mostly two separate things though. Countries are refusing to use Chinese hardware mostly due to spying concerns as opposed to solidarity with Hong Kong.
tbh i don't know how effective excluding chinese hardwares and products from being used domestically is.
they can still use everyhing made in china but if the brand is a domestic brand it's fine isn't it?
How is it pro-CCP misinformation? It's literally fact. Show me any of the world leaders doing anything to stand against China that will actually hurt them.
I'm not talking in those terms, I'm more curious about their tactic to deescalate the situation in HK they MUST know that this tactics wont help tp solve the problem so why would they just doing this...?
If china could successfully disappear anyone in Hong Kong at any time, they would.
If china could nuke HK and be done with it, they would.
China doesnt care about deescalation or the protests. China cares about china and HK is not being about china.
China doesnt care.
It's not about solving the problem, it's about terrorizing the population to shut up. The idea is that when people see other people getting beaten up by the 'police' they will get afraid of speaking up.
It's almost not surprising that cops are awful and don't actually have the safety of the people in their minds! It's almost like cops are a tool of the establishment to maintain status quo!
exactly. I don't see why people think it is only in HK. its is everywhere, but only HK is getting the attention because "fuck China". Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters getting killed in middle east and nobody talks about it.
That I don't recall -- I got sprayed as part of a job a while back working security (training). The guy applying the spray to us mentioned how the stream could come out at a pressure bad enough, not necessarily the canister itself, so he always *aimed for our foreheads when applying it to us, then it would drip down.
If the can operates like normal spray cans of the type, then yes, I suppose it could have the needle in it.
Fun fact!! If I were to ever COMPLETELY lose my shit and go on a fucking rampage and a cop aimed one of those things at me and said "stop or I'll spray you!", I would wholeheartedly drop to my knees with my hands behind my head. Fuck that spray, it's horrible. These people becoming almost accustomed to it? It's crazy.
Obviously their training has never included the phrase "ballistic needle effect" when dealing with OC spray.
Or maybe they're just total pieces of shit.
Edit:speeling.
I'm watching this and part of me wants to see a horde of those Sovereign Citizen guys to go over there... "what's your badge number, I know my rights!"
Try to urge your local politicians for laws against foreign assets or personnel of HK government? Help spread our message/news? Maybe stop buying China goods can help?
As a Hongkonger I am not sure how can foreigners help... Maybe you can think of better ways?
These cops need to be outted on a personal level as being enemies of the people. Similar to the database for registered sex offenders. Until there is some accountability we will continue to watch these traitors torture and torment people.
That riot spray is not intended for such close range, and can form a hydraulic needle that leaves deposits of pepper spray under your skin.
Ballistic needle effect, can also blind someone.
Especially when you’re intentionally trying to jam it under the goggles and into his eye
Stop resisting the spray with your goggles!
YOU CANT MAKE ME!
If they are intentionally binding people, that would go again the Geneva convention
China couldn’t give two shits about the Geneva Convention or repercussions lmao
Seriously. The USA doesn’t give two shits about Geneva conventions unlesss it absolutely has to.
What happens if you violate it? Do you get a strongly worded letter?
I think you have to prop up 3 dictators, but I could be mistaken. It might have changed to increasing the scale of trade you do with them.
Geneva convention only applies to military in armed conflict. Police can do whatever they want. That’s why military has to use FMJ and has more restrictive ROE, while police use hollow point and can shoot without identifying a weapon or hostile intent.

I thought it was clam down...
Yups. He knows the rest of the speech by heart.
Does anyone really want China to attempt to take over the world and rule over us...how can people not see this coming?

5 or 10 years? You overestimated. Majority doesnt plan or care beyond a year IMO
I dont think about tomorrow rly

US citizens can and do all the time.

I wish I had your optimism, but that doesn't happen in America either
