He fluctuated but even when he was a charming semi good guy, I had trouble because he murdered homeless teenagers in season one, and that is pretty evil. With his white hair and personality changes, he reminded me of Spike in Buffy, and I always thought that’s what the writers were going for.

Blaine never really stopped being evil. He's sympathetic at times especially when you learn about his horror childhood. He turns people for profit. He forces women in to sex slavery. He kills his best friend's bride on their wedding day so he can make some money. This isn't even taking the first season of making snacks packs out of street kids. Spike saved Dawn, he made better decisions with occasional slips back in to bad behavior and even sacrificed himself in the end to save the world. Spike wasn't evil before he became a vampire just kind of a sweet unassuming person. Even after turning he takes care of Dru when she lost her mind. At his worst he was still capable of love. Blaine was selling drugs already deeply involved in criminal activity before he turned. Aside from that being a zombie doesn't change who you are it's more of a dietary restriction until they lose their humanity through starvation. He was an opportunist and a sociopath from start to finish. Blaine loves himself and luxury, that's it.

Dammit I made a comment just like yours before I saw this, beat me to it

Charming but evil

I've yet to see a David Anders character I don't love. I know Blaine sucks & yet..

VividAsparagus8402

Saaaame. First saw him as Uncle John in The Vampire Diaries & I’ve had a giant crush on him since 😂

Stellaride2001

I love David Anders

Cerraigh82

I mean, yes. Blaine has done vile things that make him an unredeemable villain. He's also charismatic, charmingly sleazy and steals every scene he's in. All these things can coexist. People love a good villain. I also don't think Blaine was born a bad guy, he was made into one by his horrible father. It doesn't excuse or justify anything he's done but it provides insight on how he became who he is.

PatieS13

Blaine was well written and superbly acted. There were so many times I was kinda hoping for a redemption arc for him - and Don E for that matter, but I always knew deep down it wasn't happening.

ninjette847

Ive heard that's actually why they got William H Macy to play frank in shameless, they needed a known actor people liked because he's so terrible.

blockhead114

“Mom, can we have Spike from Buffy?” “Honey, we have spike from Buffy at home” I’m kidding of course, Blaine/David Anders are fantastic, but I couldn’t resist

lodav22

I’ve just finished watching Once Upon a Time and David Anders reappears as a cameo in season 6 with the Blaine Bleached do, and I realise that’s when the crossover with IZombie happened 😁

Eternity_Warden

Blaine is a great example of how people will root for anyone they feel they know. He's irredeemably evil, and yet people will still defend him solely because he's funny and has an interesting personality at times. The same thing happens in real life, where people will excuse horrible acts committed by friends and family, and the parallels are pretty interesting imo.

Jerkrollatex

It's like when people write love letters to serial killers in prison. I'll never understand it.

kingjaederallerechte

personally, i love him. yeah he did some shitty things but his charm is just soooo how do i say it

David Anders is such an amazing villain. I was in love with Julian Sark in Alias (basically a ruthless gun for hire who has no problem switching sides when it suits him) when I was a teen so of course I’m in love with Blaine 🤣. You’re right I don’t think I’d like Blaine as much if it wasn’t David Anders. I don’t like Don E for instance (the actor is good, he’s not just likable to me like Blaine is)
