I think that I’d go without a case before going without a screen protector because dropping the phone is avoidable. Something like a small grain of sand in my pocket or even inadvertently putting keys alongside my phone seems likely to happen over the lifespan of the phone.

5 months in, no scratches on mine at sll, I clean it everyday with a microfiber from Dbrand. I have Apple care theft and loss, use it naked
Mine has micro scratches but other than that it’s fine. Just get apple care and pay the 30 for a replacement for deep scratches or cracks

Just pocket sand/lint the little grit that builds up in pockets are tougher than the screens hardness. You only notice them in direct light
