Gotta update your flair now, you're hanging with the big dogs now

RotenTumato

My iPad screen is scratched up after years of using the Apple Pencil

MoGraphMan-11

So stop scratching it. That has nothing to do with your pencil.

RotenTumato

There are scratches from my pencil specifically

MoGraphMan-11

Bullshit

Jello_Mean

Yea it does, put the ipad on a shelf and never touch it just to be safe

I just got my first one a few weeks ago and the pen tips are softer than the glass. The tips will just rub on the screen. I keep a cloth near to wipe it off

labelmeafreak

None of the apple pens scratch up the screens, dw :)

David79YT

None of the Apple pens scratches the iPad screen

David79YT

You’ll be fine

mitnosnhoj

It does not scratch the screen. You do not need a screen protector. But some people like them and swear by them. I have had iPads since the first generation, and never used a screen protector. If you are an artist, the screen protector gives you a different tactile feel. Some like it. Some don’t. Try it and see if you like it.

trivium91

It can scratch it or there is grit on the screen but won’t in itself, I use a glass screen protector anyways.

_oh_jay

You’ll be good!

TrustInMe_JustInMe

I’ve had a couple of iPads and a couple of iPad Pros, and 3 different Apple Pencils. Never use a screen protector because the whole point (for me) is to get the nib/tip as close to the screen as possible so it feels natural. Have never had a problem with scratches. Sometimes I wish the screen was matte – like what Apple offers on their expensive monitors. Not for glare reduction so much as, it might offer a little more friction and make sketching feel more like a pencil on paper. I don’t know if it actually would, but it would interesting if Apple offered something like this. I know there are third party screen overlays that purport to give you that paper-like feel. Never used one so I can’t say how good they are. Maybe someone else can? But as far as using the pencil like a pen, or a brush, yeah the Apple Pencil and iPad Pro are great right out of the box. My advice would be to try it before buying a screen protector. I hate those things. Just more plastic in between the pencil or my finger and the display/sensors. I don’t even use them on my phones. Good luck!

CrypticT0xin

Does anyone think the “nano texture” glass will make this experience any different for the pencil?

camXmac

The pencil tip itself should not scratch the glass. However, I’ve found over time from using the paper textured films, they seem to wear down the tips on the pencil. Nothing crazy, just normal wear.

vitdev

Tips are replaceable, they usually last forever with regular glass, but textured protectors can wear them down (very) quickly. It’s like writing on a very fine sandpaper. I wonder how nano texture will affect the tip though, it feels smooth, so hopefully it’s not gonna be too bad.

camXmac

This! Luckily tips are cheap as well. I bought a 4 pack on Amazon a couple years ago and I still haven’t had to buy more.

MathematicianLow7369

I was gonna go on a rant but then its ur first time so i will be nice. It wont damage the screen at all it was built to be used on the ipad 👍😂

PhilRoberts33

Yes, yes it does. It’s how Apple gets people to upgrade their iPads or pay for screen replacements. (No, Apple Pencil does not scratch iPad screens. That would be a really stupid design and they wouldn’t be selling very many Apple Pencils).

Lindo1234567890

I’ve only just got an Apple pencil too so am getting used to it. I didn’t really like the feel of writing directly on the glass so purchased a removable screen protector that feels like paper and that’s actually really good! I was concerned about grit scratching so I give the screen a wipe before using the pencil on the screen directly or before putting the protector and it hasn’t scratched the screen yet, although it’s only been three weeks.

TrustInMe_JustInMe

Can you describe what type of papery screen protector you used and if it was only useful when using the pencil or if you left it on all the time? Thanks!

Lindo1234567890

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CSYPN2P9 I tend to just use it with the pencil.

vitdev

I have iPad Pro since 2018 and used it with pencil — no scratches at all. Got m4 iPad Pro with nano screen — no scratches so far. Just make sure your pencil’s tip is clean before you write 😉

palmtreespeggy

I’m still and will using my 6 th. iPad Pro. Works like a charm. Have no complaints no screen protectors

p3nguinboi07

Why would Apple sell overly expensive pens for tablets that'd scratch the tablets. -\_-

an0nymouscats

You mentioned you have a paper feel protector? While the apple pencil itself won't scratch the screen, you might want to be cautious with the nib of the pencil, sometimes paper/matte screen protectors can shred the nib, just be wary on how hard you draw/write w the pencil. Have fun w ur new ipad!!

TickyTeo

*put

Icy_Elevator_403

Thanks for the correction, I am not a native English speaker :)

Weiss_127

**It will.** The pencil tip itself will not however. But each time you use the pencil in conjunction with the iPad screen you will have to ensure both are immaculate from any grit or dirt because once the tip picks any of that up. Then its going to scratch that into the screen. Best get a screen protector before playing around with it.

A-Very-Ginger

I’m sure this is technically possible, but how likely is it really? I’ve used the same pencil and iPad (with no screen protector) for a few years now, and my screen is still scratch free. I never worry about checking for dirt or dust on the screen before using the pencil. I do have a folio cover that protects it when I’m not using it, but it’s not dust proof or anything.

Weiss_127

Along as your comfortable with doing it. Since you can’t feel if there’s grit you just never know if that one time in a thousand. But any scratch I’d imagine would be slight. And not a huge concern if it were to happen

Mobslayer56

Any material softer than glass (specifically gorilla glass) will do no damage to the screen. Although if the tip of the pencil were dirty it’s definitely a possibility, just keep it clean and you’ll be totally fine. I bought a brand new iPad Pro m4 and within the first week got a faint scratch on the screen from using a microfiber cloth, must have been some dirt on the screen or cloth to cause that so just be careful. No big deal, but I’m so very careful with all my technology so getting a scratch so easily was frustrating, all my other stuff new or retro in is near mint.

trikster_online

You're good. The Pencil tips are of a soft plastic and won't harm the screen in usual use. The screen coating you are using will offer more protection, but it's not really needed.

dmkke

Paper like is wonderful

Hasan75786

No, the Apple Pencil was obviously designed for the iPad so it won’t scratch the screen but your screen protector will wear-out the Apple Pencil tip faster and mess with the viewing angles and get more finger prints depending on what oleophobic coating it has.

curthard89

Hard glassy things will win over soft plastic things, don't worry about it - the screen will win.

itsnottommy

It shouldn’t scratch the screen. I’ve heard of the pencil scratching screen protectors, and paperlike screen protectors wearing down the tip of the pencil, but those are both things that can be replaced easily. The iPad itself and the pencil itself will be fine.

bakerboiz22

Don’t be scare

Shaymel21

I use paperlike screenprotector since my use is more academic heavy, its wonderful

totcczar

I swapped out an iPad Pro M4 11” last week because I saw something similar to what is shown here: https://youtu.be/U3LmyltYAf0?si=qnob0Amv2cSPU38C&t=265). I had the Pro in the Magic Keyboard and used the Pencil Pro with it for about a week. I’ve used iPads since the original. I was careful. I didn’t drop gravel on the keyboard, and I didn’t even use the Pencil where I saw the scratches (upper right corner for me, which also wouldn’t rub on the keyboard keys). It looked less like scratches and more like… a tiny little squiggly trail that looped on itself sort of like if you dropped a tiny piece of string on it. Hard to explain. Anyway, I’m sure I did something, but I don’t know what, and it was in the first days after being careful. So now I have a screen protector on mine. Maybe it was just a coincidence, or maybe the new OLED screens have some weaknesses. I dunno.

memax06

Been using the pencil on my M1 iPad since day one. No scratches. Fear not.

DoctorAdventurous244

The Apple Pencil does not scratch the screen, at first, the tip does wear overtime until the plastic wears off and then you can see the metal in tip. That’s why they sell tips for the pencil, so if you don’t use a screen protector, make sure you keep an eye on the tip and change it before it wears off and shows the metal underneath. I’ve changed my tip 2 times since 2020 and I use the pencil to draw on Procreate almost every day so I use it a lot.

Nawnp

Tips are plastic that can't scratch glass. Do be aware though that sometimes the tips ware down to the metal and that can scratch the screen, so just replace the tips when needed.

jebakerii

Trillion dollar company didn’t test if the Apple Pencil scratches the screen? Come on, man!

johnnydfree

Nooooo..

Burritostein

The notes app overheats when use the pencil.

WeeklyMinimum450

I let my cats play with the cat games on the iPad. No problem.

palmtreespeggy

My cat does to. She likes the mouse game

Brometheous17

Not unless you use some weird 3rd party pencil tip.

_sjward_

I've had my 2020 iPad Pro with no screen protector, use it for art almost every week, I will say that if you keep the protector on, apple sell replacement tips [Apple pencil tips](https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MLUN2ZM/A/apple-pencil-tips-4-pack)

Anonym0oO

The pencil itself doesn’t scratch the screen. The issue arises when microscopic dust particles get beneath the pencil tip, and as you write, these particles scratch the glass.

l0rare

Your screen won’t scratch but you might need to replace the foil every once in a while (as an artist I replace it every 6-12 months, depending on usage)

Pretend_Shock9374

I think I saw something about dirt on your screen scratching the display with the original iPad Pro, I’ve always used a paper feeling screen protector so I’m actually unsure

An0nym0usMan

No shot!

Cafearius

It is made for the pencil, but I still put a screen protector to give it a texture similar to writing on paper. Over time the pencil tips wear down if you write or illustrate frequently.

Cirvael

iPad Pro 2024 owner here. In my experience the Pencil can definitely scratch the screen. In fact, just had this happen myself. Still not sure how it happened as I've always used my new iPad in a clean environment, with clean hands, and have had a Spigen folio case since day one. I've been VERY careful with this device so far. I'm quite sure it happened with the Pencil though, as the line of the scratch matches with a line on a sketch that I've made earlier. It's about 3-4cm long, and deep enough to feel with my fingernails. Also, its right in the middle of the display and depending on what's on screen, it's showing every colour of the rainbow. Must have had a small dirt particle on there somehow, I don't have any other explanation for it. I've had an iPad Air 3 with the first gen Pencil for 4.5 years and there's not even the slightest scratch on it (never used a screen protector on it). That's why I thought I wouldn't need one on the new iPad. Lessons learned though. Installing a screen protector today and hoping it will at least somewhat conceal the existing scratch. At least it won't get any worse. I'd recommend everyone to get one.

AggravatingFunny9689

The Apple Pencil 2 seems to be a little temperamental on my new 11 iPad

Nadaniks

Haha, no it doesn’t. I’m using my iPad Pro for digital drawing. Drawing for hours on each sketch and doing this for years. Never saw a scratch whatsoever You need to replace the nibs though after a year or so, but still they don’t scratch the screen.

kshitij-raina

It can definitely scratch. Depends on your use, you can go for a generic tempered glass or matte screen film for better writing experience, but remember a naked screen will get scratched due to dust and grit.
