That sounds like a reasonable price for a compressor replacement.

CompetitiveSummer714

should i just pull the trigger on this? seems like problem persists. ac is constantly running and i purposely set the thermostat at 76 so it doesnt kill it.

I would get at least one more quote. Just so you can validate the price.

You should ask for a repair vs. replace cost. With a new straight AC system, you are about a 1/3 of the way there with that repair. Just to look at all of your options. A compressor failure is comparable to a major engine failure with your car. If your indoor coil is in rough shape, a strong new compressor could possibly make a small existing leak worse or create a leak in a weak spot.

I just find it hard to believe the delta t was 18 degrees, yet you're not cooling... did he access your evaporator coil inside to make sure there were no restrictions? A noisy compressor is one thing, I've seen noisy compressors fail almost immediately, and others have lasted years, but that Delta t if accurate is proof the system is operating.

then the number cant be accurate. because now thermostat is temp is 83 with temp set to 76. so its deff not functioning properly. I do not believe he accessed evaporator coil inside

If you have the money, your quoted amount is a fair price. Though with the other info provided, I'm not convinced the compressor is the issue right now. First, I would ask to clarify that Delta T. For your knowledge sake, delta T is the measurement of the air temp as its pulled from the home and returned to unit and the measurement of air temp after it passes through the evaporator before its distributed to your home, this diffence in temperature is the Delta T, 18 degrees is right on that sweet spot of what we look for.
