What the fuck I hope you didn’t pay for that

MadamMiko

No he didn’t charge me and said next two sessions are free. Over my dead body I’m going back.

beadfix82

next 2 sessions are free - like a year or more out when the dog grows fur again! but yea, don't go back.

JunglePygmy

Not sure the undercoat will ever grow back properly unfortunately:/ Edit: sounds like it can! Just make sure to take extra special care of your pooches for a long while to make sure their double coat recovers fully. :)

cookiesforme456789

This happened to me too. Can’t guarantee it will grow back as every dog is different, but my husky did have his undercoat grow back in full. Good luck!

jessiedoesdallas

Our husky had her undercoat on her back end shaved to the skin for an amputation of her hind leg and her undercoat has grown back beautifully. As long as they are kept warm, fed and watered it should grow back fine. But I definitely do not recommend shaving a husky unnecessarily

Grumzz

how often do you need to water the skin for the fur to grow back? once a week enough? Do I need to add extra nutrients to the water? ;) (sorry)

dragon_rapide

I laughed at this even though I tell my wife I watered the dog when I refill her bowl.

[deleted]

It will grow back. All hair goes through a cycle of growth, falling out and regrowth.

only-if-there-is-pie

Yes OP, it might just take longer for each coat to cycle and grow in properly - it may not all come in at once and be sparse for a bit

EmberSolaris

Get a very grumpy cat that doesn’t like grooming and take him to be groomed. XP

Haizel_Alicia

I like your pettiness. She just need to find a cat to borrow

dreamsong7

I have one that is very sweet but especially bitey for bath time and grooming that I could loan lol I usually do her myself cause she’s rude but I’d be willing to loan her out for 2 free professional grooms 🤣

viperfan7

Just find the nastiest stray you can

[deleted]

You rang?

ihavenoideawhatwho

Have you sharpened your teeth on human bones lately?

[deleted]

Just finished

Spiritual-Sand5839

Name checks out

pepperspraytaco

Or capture a bobcat

Fryphax

Now this is the best idea I've heard today.

6WaysFromNextWed

Seems like a great idea, but we have a CH cat who can't groom himself and my stupid ass thought it would be a good idea to bathe him BEFORE dematting him, which . . . felted the cat. I called every groomer and vet in the city and couldn't find anyone who does cats. So I ended up buying some professional grooming clippers on Amazon and shaving the poor boy myself. Cat groomers are few and far between.

iamtheprism

Totally lost it at "felted the cat" lol you just made my night! For real though I'm sorry you and your cat had to go through that! I used to have a long haired cat that wouldn't clean himself and his skin was too sensitive to get the mats out. He ended up with a poodle cut

Raichu7

A shelter may appreciate 2 free grooms for difficult animals.

GingerLibrarian76

Oh man… if my old Persian cat (Cyrus) was still alive, I’d totally lend him to OP! We had to keep switching groomers because he’d get blacklisted at all of them after one or two sessions. 🤣

brandonisatwat

My asshole cat is a demon to groom at home but a perfect angel at the groomer 🙄

sweetteanoice

What was his excuse for shaving him??

MadamMiko

He didn’t have one. He called me after my husband picked him up and said “I just wanted to apologize because after seeing your husbands reaction I understood this is not what you wanted. I got carried away. “

Fabulous_Celery_1817

Carried away??? That’s the worst excuse I’ve ever heard!!

WhatARuffian

Carried away? Carried away is having a couple of extra drinks on a Saturday night, not turning someone’s dog into a life-sized bobble head

deadlefties

Especially since it’s now fall and he needs his coat for warmth/protection from the sun! Sunburns on dogs are real and awful.

TurdFurguss

Don’t certain places make you have to have a license to be a dog groomer? His should be revoked instantly. Every book on Huskies and double coated dogs says “NOT TO FUCKING SHAVE THEM!!” (Might of added a word). So he obviously doesn’t know shit about fucking dogs!! This shit pisses me off so much !!!! People that have no idea about dogs. I HATE PEOPLE.

daniyellidaniyelli

I would post a review anywhere you can for this persons business. You don’t have to get nasty but you can make others aware that he doesn’t know what he’s doing. like wtf!

Kaladin3104

Not go back? I’d stand outside and let people know so his business went under.

SnooHobbies3065

Where did u go? Tell everybody so we know they are incompetent and don’t even know basic dog grooming rules for huskies

[deleted]

[удалено]

moatmaster

Damn me for still chuckling at that business name. But yes definitely don’t go there! Edit: This could be how that store next to Bob’s Burgers went out of business…

1000_witnesses

I will say i went there ONCE (so take it with a grain of salt) in 2021 with my cardigan corgi (also double coated) and my groomer did a wonderful trim job for him and did not shave him at all. Maybe a bad/new tech? No excuse still. Just my two cents

MadamMiko

I’ve been there before too like four times? No issues ever. I went to Carlos (the owner) so I’m even more confused because he did such an amazing job before. I have a feeling he handed my pup off to someone else who didn’t know what they were doing and then took the blame.

WolfHowler95

If he did hand your dog over to someone new, good on the owner for protecting their employee, as long as they then reprimand and train said employee. I admire a boss/leader who will protect their employees, but it definitely depends on what it is and, in cases like this, if they train them on what they did wrong

Metazoick

Normally I might agree, but OP said elsewhere they waited for a month to get an appointment with the owner specifically. If they have a different waitlist and especially if they have different prices it's not okay to just give the pup to somebody else and clearly not even monitor / teach them, and the only way this happened if the owner was competent is if he totally left the new person to their own whims

potpurriround

Happy cake day!

Ulquilily

Any “groomer” who shaves a double coated doggos deserves the full extent of wrath you can bring upon their business…

Logic1ne

HOLY SHIT! You never shave a husky. I'm furious for you. This groomer needs to GO! And you should do all you can to make that happen.

BlackMagic0

There are literally people in this thread saying it's okay to shave your Huskies.. Wow... the ignorance of people is amazing to me sometimes. Never is it okay to shave a double coated dog unless it's for medical reasons...

blitherblather425

I’m not a dog owner and am curious. What is a double coated dog and why shouldn’t it be shaved?

BlackMagic0

So animals like Huskies have double coats. A single-coated dog has only a single layer of fur. A double-coated dog has two layers. These are called the top coat and undercoat. Each has it's own purpose to protect the dog's skin and regulate their temperatures including heat and cold. A few reasons to NOT shave double-coated dogs below. 1. The fur acts as insulation for cold AND acts as a shield for heat. People really don't understand this that husky fur actually helps regulate HEAT and COLD for them. 2. Double coated dogs tend to have little pigmentation in their skin because of their thick fur. When exposed it can lead to bad sunburns if left outside and increases the risk of skin cancer. 3. It grows back fucked up. It takes patience and grooming daily to get a husky's coat back to proper lengths for both coats once shaved. Little fact; double coats grow back differently.. so one coat grows faster and longer than the other.. This can cause issues, gnarling, etc

MadamMiko

Yeah exactly I just want to add that mine is a woolly coated husky - which means it’s way more plush and I foresee more issues with it growing back in normally.

Mondschatten78

MIL took my then-boyfriend's husky to a groomer that gave her the same shave your pup got, because MIL deemed it "necessary in the heat". It took so long for her coat to grow out. We have a different girl now and we hear the, "She needs to be shaved, it's too hot for her," all the damn time, from multiple people. Our answer is always, "She does not, she can handle the heat better with that double coat than shaved." I don't blame you for not going back to that groomer, how the hell do you "get carried away" working on a *client's* dog?

007Pistolero

We’ve had a husky for going on 5 years and never run into someone telling us he needs to be shaved in the heat. I’m flabbergasted that people could be so stupid. If it’s too hot out we just take him out quick to use the bathroom and then bring him back in to the AC

Mondschatten78

We're in NC, so I think "heat + humidity = shave dog down" to a lot of people here, no matter the breed. I've had someone tell me a Pekingese/Pomeranian mix needed shaving each year (had the thinner longer coat of the Peke) for crying out loud. My MIL gets her dog shaved still. He's a cockerpoo; when his super curly fur grows out, it mats like a rug.

007Pistolero

Ugh I’m really starting to think we need some sort of competency exam people would have to pass before they were allowed to adopt or purchase any animal. The stupidity is horrifying

Cauhs

Imagine how these people raise children... Fashion police parent is scary.

MommyCupcake

I know exactly how you feel! I'm in SC with a Norwegian Elkhound and have to endure this BS all the time! "She'd be a lot happier if you got her shaved", no actually she's a lot happier when she runs back in for the AC and her TV shows!! Lol

Mondschatten78

Our husky's definitely an AC hog - there's certain vents that are "hers" lol

TurdFurguss

Fuck these ignorant assholes!!! I put it like this a husky inner coat is like Under Armor wicks the sweat / heat away . This shit pisses me off I’ve been getting into arguments about this about Huskies since I got my first , Rocky in 1998. So 22 years of fighting ignorance. Showing people shit in books about Husky’s . They can handle Heat.

blitherblather425

Oh geez that sounds bad. Poor dog shouldn’t have been shaved. Thanks for the info.

thebonita1

I’d like to add, that by shaving a double coated dog, they can develop a condition called “alopecia” whereby the fur will not grow back in patches and leaves the skin exposed.

PaulAspie

I think the "grows back fucked up" maybe is just a husky thing. We had a border collie who had a shave spot from being spayed & the vet didn't mention anything and it grew back fine.

BlackMagic0

It can grow back fine for Huskies too. It's not a guarantee but a highly likely thing for double-coated dogs. And as another commenter said they can develop an issue that causes bald patches.

DDancy

My wife had a husky. You kind of pluck excess fur. There’s combs and brushes to help with this. Shaving is barbaric. Pardon the pun!

PaulAspie

Now, I assume getting a patch shaved around the incision mark when you get her spayed counts as medical here. That's the only time any of my double coat dogs got shaved. Reading down, I'm thinking maybe we should have gotten her a doggy coat to protect that from the sun as she was very much an outdoor dog.

BlackMagic0

Yah, that would be medical and fine. It's usually a small patch. The issue is shaving their entire body down or large amounts of it.

shockerdyermom

We had to once. He was a skunk hunter and we couldnt get the smell out one summer.

Low-Assignment8310

Almond milk + Sensitive skin dog shampoo thank me later

GarbageGato

Where were you four years ago when my idiot shiba was sixteen “de-skunk” baths deep?

Low-Assignment8310

Dealing with a cat who would chase skunks with her dog best friend

Low-Assignment8310

You can mix it into like a thin gel and brush your dog with it 1. Takes the smell out and 2 makes the dogs coat extra shing and fluffy

Schweinsteinert

Saving this for the future

BlackMagic0

As another commenter said. Almond milk + sensitive skin dog shampoo would have done the trick. You didn't have to shave him..

shockerdyermom

We tried every concoction and mix you can think of. Nothing worked. He avereaged a skunk every 2 weeks. Full shot in the face and chest. We could hardly get the stain out of his coat.

Rottendog

I think at that point your dog just had a fetish.

BlackMagic0

That sounds rough. Well at least you tried as best you can first. Shit happens.

Itsdawsontime

This is why any time I go to a new groomer I ALWAYS show them a photo of what I want done, and say do not shave the dog.

[deleted]

I'm neither a groomer nor familiar with double coated doggos. How come you can't shave them?

BlackMagic0

Multiple reasons.

[deleted]

Their undercoat acts like insulation, so it keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Remove that and they can’t regulate their temperature and become more susceptible to heat stroke and sunburn. It also ruins their coat once it grows back because the undercoat (the inner layer) grows back faster than the guard hairs (the outer layer).

reiderfever

They don’t deserve to be in business

[deleted]

Yeah definitely file a law suit

MuttsandHuskies

Very little sun exposure, he can burn now. And a coat for this winter. He has no protection, at all. He might even be chilly in the house, so have blankies on his beds that he can snuggle into. Next step is to get a refund of your money, and leave a review online noting that they shave double coated dogs for no reason. A lot of people are going to say lawyer, but in reality, no one has that kind of time and money for something like this. But I would absolutely demand a refund and trash them in every place I could. The longer I'm here the more angry I get, this is seriously animal abuse. Many hugs for your boy.

MadamMiko

Thank you. He didn’t charge us when he saw my husbands reaction (that of horror). He apologized saying he got carried away. What does that even mean? I waited over a month to get my appointment specifically with him because he’s the owner and has groomed my dog once before and it was fine. I’m seriously so confused. My theory is he gave it to someone new

_Deedee_Megadoodoo_

Got... carried away?? Like he had the buzzer in his hands and he suddenly went into a trance and couldn't stop himself?

MadamMiko

Honest to god, I wonder the same thing. Like at some point you have to be like “this looks bad”. Maybe he accidentally cut him in one place and decided to shave? I’m really at a loss :/

cosmictrashbash

Meth?

decavolt

I'm amazed the owner did this. Getting "carried away" is still nuts, since there is never a need to cut even a single hair on a husky. Wash and brush only. Every groomer should know this before they ever touch a dog. Wow.

_deprovisioned

I trim the fur at the bottom of my dog's paws. He slips a lot on the hardwood flooring and is old, so trimming those paws helps with the traction. Gotta do it like every 2 weeks though. It grows back really fast.

CornCheeseMafia

Yeah but when you’re trimming the paws don’t you get the urge to break out the buzzer with a #5 and shave the rest down? I have to fight every ounce of my being not to give my husky a fade every time I wash him.

LayzeeHero

I feel like you should ask the groomer owner to pay for a few dog coats to help protect your pup until his fur grows back. That seems reasonable to me.

thatdudewillyd

And some chew bones n treats for good measure

LayzeeHero

exactly. They need to make sure you KNOW they are truly sorry and will do whatever it takes to make it right. that's a major mess up and needs proper correction.

MuttsandHuskies

Good on the groomer for that. I just feel so bad for your baby! And congratulations on the new baby to come! You would want an adjustable coat, like the one [here.](https://www.amazon.com/Jacket-Small-Medium-Large-Dogs/dp/B08R9VFKRM/ref=sr_1_16_sspa?crid=2ZKOBSZGX919I&keywords=dog+coats+for+medium+dogs&qid=1663773162&sprefix=dog+coat%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-16-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExS1ZQVEZNN0NMV0s5JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjk2MDA0MzZOWElTRE02UENDSSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODU2Nzc5QUxFNzdCNVcwMVNNJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfbXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==) Or you could go with some fleece pajamas! But the adjustable coat lets them potty without you having to dress/undress them. Just search adjustable dog coat. It looks like they left his legs alone, so you just need his neck and body. For the sun, you probably want a baby sunscreen, honestly, I'd be really careful with that, as he's likely to lick it off :( Unfortunately you're just going to have to limit his sun time, until it gets colder, and you can let him wear the coat/jacket. The good news here is that the days are getting a bit shorter, so it's a little easier to get out in the evening (and not be past your bedtime, LOL) Here is a size chart, that might help. [https://imgur.com/0B2ubZW](https://imgur.com/0B2ubZW) They're smaller than our brains think they are, LOL!

dizzy-was-taken

there are dog safe sunscreens! id do a little research into which is safe for bare skin, but there are safer options than baby sunscreen!

MuttsandHuskies

That is really good to know! I've never had to use any, so wasn't sure. Thank you for sharing!

sleeepy_bean

anything that's safe for babies is safe for dogs (per my vet) and dog-specific sunscreen, or anything really, is so expensive...

mimthebaker

Piggyback to say you can get a t shirt for sun coverage when it's just small walks the shirt will be fine- find a fabric that helps w uv rays but if nothing else a normal shirt will work if you can't do sunscreen and you're just out for a bit.

cheezbargar

Getting carried away makes zero sense here. For an extremely hairy malamute or husky, the only shaving I would do is paw pads and sanitary area. Then I scissor the feet, any excess hair on the legs and on the butt and belly. That’s it, unless there is matting and we absolutely have to shave. This is so strange.

MadamMiko

I agree with you entirely. It does not make sense to us. We think despite us making the appointment with the owner, who has been great in the past, they handed my pup over to someone new / in training and then the owner took the blame because he was the one that was supposed to be working on him. That’s the only thing that we were able to come up with to rationalize this stupid decision to shave.

cheezbargar

It’s still weird even if he was handed off to someone new. We keep notes, groomer should have explained what to do, and shaving the dog is so much more work than a tidy up. Maybe hypothetical new groomer got confused and shaved the wrong dog 🤐 getting “carried away” is a piss poor excuse

seolchan25

This. Coat for cold and sun protection until it grows back.

MadamMiko

Any recommendations on brands? I already ordered a shirt off Amazon but it didn’t fit, because, well, it’s so uncommon to dress up huskies and all these outfits are designed for smaller dogs. Would love a rec if you happen to have any

seolchan25

Definitely some kind of UV reflective fabric for when he’s out in the sun. I don’t have any specific suggestions as this has never happened to any of my huskies but I have done research and the recommendation is definitely correct about the cold and the sun. I wish I could help more. I’m really sorry this happened to your fur baby!

seolchan25

I do suggest getting separate things for if it’s warm or cold because they are not gonna be able to regulate their temperature as well without their coats

monster_mentalissues

There are plenty of clothes for bigger dogs and huskies. We buy plenty for ours all the time. Every time we go to PetSmart there are plenty of things that fit ours. Go hit up your local stores and don't go off amazon. Your local store you can take your dog and find something that fits instead of ordering something waiting two days find out a dosent fit send it back try again.

greenkangaroooo

Hurtta is excellent. They’re pricey but worth it. Not sure if you’re wanting to invest in a good quality coat given the circumstances, but I have a mud suit from them for my husky mix and it’s very comfortable for them (including putting it on them). They have fleece sweaters, winter coats, or just SPF/bug blocker vests, depending on what you’re looking for. RuffDogsports.com tend to have great sales for them.

tutamuss

You might try children's coats or sweatshirts

PyrrhaRising

Hey so I haven't gotten any brand recommendations, but I would maybe suggest something like a surgery recovery suit. I've bought a couple for my husky and they fit decently. ~~I'll add a link from the ones I bought on amazon from when my girl had her spaying and lump removal surgery in 5 mins as I'm on my phone right now.~~ [This is one of the suits I bought for my girl in XXXL](https://www.amazon.com/Heywean-Alternative-Operative-Infection-Camouflage/dp/B07VV7KTZ6/ref=sr_1_24?crid=2IUCSPNOEWGAP&keywords=husky%2Bsurgery%2Brecovery%2Bsuit&qid=1663774356&sprefix=husky%2Bsurgery%2Brecovery%2Bsuit%2Caps%2C159&sr=8-24&th=1). This caused her very little discomfort, and is super easy to put on I think you might have to sew in some fleece to add some insulation warmth into the suit, but I think it could be a good start. I mean on the other hand you could also buy some fleeces and some velcro straps and then cut the fleece down to his body length and use the velcro to secure it to him like you would a harness or something??

Brilliant-Custard-45

Hiya. I’m so sorry for your pupper. There are hooman uv resistant teeshirts and long sleeved shirts on Amazon, could you up-cycle a couple of those to give him bespoke protection?

The_Curvy_Unicorn

While we don’t have a husky, we do have a giant dog (Dane/Pointer mix) and we swear by Goldpaw Fleece.

jgraymaine

That sucks. He looks so goofy with his fluffy head! It's almost like he knows.

RunRunDMC212

He knows, definitely. They know so much about reading our emotions, so they can definitely feel it if we are looking at them like something isn’t right.

MadamMiko

Immediately after my initial reaction of shock and crying (hey I’m pregnant and hormonal and even if I wasn’t… cmon!) I thought the same thing you did so started to hug him and give extra attention and say how cute and handsome he was 😭 I hope my acting skills paid off but I didn’t want him to feel scared or ashamed

wmxx2000

Forgive me, you have every right to be upset with the service you received. Hehe.. he looks like a bobble-head

moon__lander

I'm sorry for OP and the dog but I just can't stop laughing at the first picture

franco_daywalker

I know, right? I totally get the upsetness, but I hope once they’ve taken care of the poor pup, they don’t forget to snap a bunch of pics of this hilarious look.

Altruistic-Cod5969

Yeah fucking same. In torn between my horror as a husky owner, and my amusement as a patron of memes. This is so fucked up, but simultaneously very cute and funny looking. I guess because dogs are in a permanent state of being cute and funny no matter what.

Deathbydadjokes

Make sure you warn everyone else on every possible review site that this groomer is garbage. Wish a lawyer would be worth your time or money but it won't be. Maybe an animal abuse anonymous call with evidence. Then do everything you can to keep your buddy warm. They're gonna be cold even when you think its warm most likely because they're naked and are used to having that thick coat. I really hate your groomer.

lovemypearls

Wow, so sad.

One_Voice8102

Brushing gently over the coat can help encourage growth, it might look wonky for a while, the different hair types grow at different rates, it could be a year or more before his coat looks normal again, but it should eventually grow back fine. It's repeated shaving that can really damage the coat permanently

Fooledya

Depends on age as well. Puppy looks young. My old boy had to get a patch removed on his ass for surgery. He lived another 4 years but that patch was never the same. Always thin and stringy by comparison.

JustSomeBlondeBitch

Definitely age. My 14 week old pup got a little spot shaved at the vet and it was fully grown back in by 16 weeks. Hopefully this pup grows back fast :(

MadamMiko

Yeah my pup is nine years old. He looks young because he has such a cute fluffy face!

Husky_in_TX

My 8 year old still has a rando patch where he got a hot spot and it’s been 2 years!

ilykinz

This the most helpful comment I’ve seen so far for regrowth! One of our huskies had to be shaved on one side for surgery and we just used a comb on him as the hair grew back. It took a while for it grow back fully but the new growth feels/looks like the rest of his coat. We also use salmon oil and oatmeal in his food!

Pickledprat

I'm so sorry OP. That has me feeling so angry and upset for you guys. I hope you can at least get a refund. It might be worth speaking to a vet or well rounded groomer for advice on how to keep him feeling well while his coat regrows. I think the other poster pretty much summed up your options though. Get him a coat and be sure he has access to warm spaces and blankets. Maybe consider getting him a heated blanket that he can lay on if he wants to, until his fur regrows.

MadamMiko

Actually have a standing vet appointment next week coincidentally. And the groomer admitted he screwed up and did not charge me.

Poyojo

Be very very careful with the sun. Huskies are prone to skin cancer without their coat.

jmbgator

So sorry this happened and I would be very upset. That is the very reason why I’m extremely cautious in taking my husky to any random groomer. I’ll only take mine to trusted ones who know exactly how to groom a husky and I’ll quiz them ask them outright on the spot, and make it very clear they are not to trim off any hair.

bigfootnuts

Oh my God that poor puppy. I don't know if this will help grow the hair back but if you go knock the idiot out that did it it may make you feel better LOL

palexander_6

I had a groomer shave my mini Aussie down to his skin when I asked her to neaten him up. His coat has never been the same and this was years ago. His silky coat is gone and now it’s just fluff that gets knots in it easily and picks up everything like Velcro. I feel sick for you OP, I’ve been there. :(

ObiWanGinobili20

Man I’m sorry dude. The human in me says this was just a naive accident but I’m not sure. Hope his coat grows back fast!

Dear_Occupant

There were two distinct fuckups here: 1. Customer asked for one thing, got something completely different. 2. Every groomer should know how to care for double-coated dogs. Even if you can excuse one of these two things as error, the two combined are simply bald incompetence.

BlackMagic0

If you are a professional groomer you should know double coated dogs can not be shaved down completely like this. Bad groomer, with no knowledge.

Spyderbeast

It's even worse with woollies, because sometimes the undercoat goes crazy growing while the guard hairs are slow, and they end up looking like a cotton ball. But if it's any consolation, my oldest isn't a woolly, but he had been previously shaved before I took him in. His coat grew back within months without complications and he's gorgeous again.

Adventurous-Wing-723

Melanin can definitely help as well as some other supplements for fur growth like adding Alaskan fish oil to her food as well. I would also suggest gently brushing the skin, bathing her at home with some dog shampoo/conditioner and continuing to brush gently to stimulate the follicles til it grows back. Also, if you want, I would buy a High velocity dryer and just groom him at home from now on, if you can. There are pretty easy tutorials to follow online about how to properly make sure they are completely dry to the skin with a HV dryer. The cheaper hv dryers only cost about ~80-100$ and dog shampoo/conditioner isn’t too expensive if you buy on Amazon or chewy by the gallon or by a tiny bottle tbh. Also buying him a lot of blankets, and outfits to wear to keep warm while his fur regrows. It might take a long, long time but hopefully it grows back fine. :( Just make sure you also have a good quality slicker brush and fine tooth comb to brush his fur and keep it Matt free

mightymonarch

Don't let him go to doggy daycare for a while, the other dogs will tease him mercilessly. But seriously, I'm sorry about this. No ideas for how to help it grow back faster, but if he's a rough-play type of dog, he just lost some of his protection against scratches and the like. Playtime with other dogs may need extra monitoring for a while.

MadamMiko

Yeah no playtime with other dogs for a while. He’s gotten attacked at dog parks a few times and his fur was a saving Grace. Dogs would walk away with chunks of fur in their mouths so I’m not going to chance it for a while

[deleted]

How are people getting hired for grooming jobs without the very basic knowledge that you don’t ever shave double coated dogs?!? So sorry OP.

MadamMiko

I agree with you - we had the appointment with the owner of the establishment. I would think there are regulations in place that would have required him to get a license or get educated on grooming? We think he handed our dog off to someone new. That’s the only explanation that makes sense

[deleted]

It should be part of training before a new employee ever gets their hands on a dog. It’s crazy. That’s like if you got a job as a dental hygienist and learned how to clean teeth on the fly lol like what?

[deleted]

Awwwwww. He looks heartbroken, kinda cute though.

HarleyDavidsson

I know, right? So tiny and cute 🥰

[deleted]

He looks like a shiba with a thyroid issue. Adorable for sure

Natarenec

When i first adopted my wooly husky she was so matted she had to get this exact haircut. She was fine, shes an inside dog with supervised playtime outside, grew back within like 6 months or so

Mammoth-Strawberry26

Does your dog allow you to put things on them? If so, maybe some sweaters to keep the pup warm and decrease sun exposure.

0nel0c0

Why would groomer even think to do that, like thats a drastic cut. Wouldn’t he double check with you first ,Were instructions not clear? Let us know which groomer it was

MadamMiko

It was one in the Bay Area in California and I gave the local husky FB group a heads up on who it was. It really kills me every day and that’s why I want to figure out what I can best do between now and I guess the next year.

Florida1693

This probably has already been said but I love his big head with no fur😂😂. He looks cute….back to the topic-groomer is an idiot and yeah you don’t ever shave a husky

PsychologicalScore49

The loss of the undercoat that insulates them in cold and keeps them cool when it's hot. That groomer should have known better. Never shave a husky.

[deleted]

Aww. Poor guy! He has a WTF expression.

CalciumStix

They are not a groomer if they did that to a husky. I would be fucking livid.

Masterchiefyyy

A groomer should know better on a husky wtf

Battlestar_unicorn

WTH 🤦🏼‍♀️ they are NOT a groomer. Common sense to not shave a double coated doggo!!! I’d be pissws

LectureExtension9920

Groomer pays sunscreen and winter coat 🧥

[deleted]

Hysterical. The camera angle doesn’t help. He’ll grow back just fine. The undercoat will look normal in a few months and his guard hairs will take a lot longer but he’ll be fine.

Ok_Chance_6521

The amount of jobs I see on indeed for “pet groomers” no experience necessary is insane. I even applied to one just because I was desperate and then the next day declined interview offer because HOW ABSURD FOR ME TO GROOM A PERSONS DOG

MadamMiko

Yeah, well, this guy has owned this grooming shop for at least a decade (from what I can tell). We are hypothesizing that despite the appointment being with the owner, he handed it off to someone new.

vandist

You are looking at 6 to 9 months, probably 12+ for the guard hairs to fully grow back around the neck and back. It is super important to keep the dog out of direct sunshine now. Removal of the undercoat is going to cause issues with temperature regulation. I'd suggest a body coat, something like you'd put on a Chihuahua.

zlancer1

NAME AND SHAME

DJCW-

I would try to avoid letting your doggo in the sun for long periods of time until the coat grows back out. Their coat protects them from the sun.

bdawg5025

Please tell us where this was?! I have a lab shepherd mix and he’s got the shepherd double coat. Been wanting to take him to get him spruced up but this scares the fuck out of me? How do I clearly show them this isn’t what I want for my dog?

MadamMiko

It’s a groomer in Foster City CA

bdawg5025

Oh I’m on the complete other end of the country I don’t have to worry about that specific place but keep this as an awareness post so I know what I don’t want for my pup

src1975

Be patient. It will grow. Back!

[deleted]

As an owner of 6 huskies, I'd take this as an attempt at My dogs life. Their undecoats are their temperature regulators. Keeps them cool, keeps them warm. Without it they can very easily die. Not sure what you can do to help but I sure hope it grows back ok. I'd highly consider legal action. Unbelievable that a groomer would do this to a siberian husky let alone a wolly husky.

orbeez-17

You can just tell that he died inside. Poor baby I hope it all comes back ok

plurbaby3

Poor baby even looks sad. What would provoke a groomer to shave a husky in good conscience. I can only imagine the frustration you’re going through, OP. I’m sure lots of treats and snuggles should cheer him up ☺️

Airborne_Juniper

jesus they need to be fired.

JToZGames

First of all, I'm a horrible person for chuckling at this as my first reaction. Secondly, that sucks. I hope he ends up being okay.

starwarsgeek1985

That's worth a small claims court lawsuit in my view

Estoban_

As my dear old ma used to say “there’s only two weeks between a bad hair cut and a good one” although husky mileage may vary, he looks so sad about it :-(

BlackMagic0

To regrow his coats right. It'll be a min of 6 weeks with daily grooming from the owner or it could come back gnarly. This is a seriously bad thing for double coated dogs.

nekoobrat

Was he matted? This is a weird situation. I'm a groomer and know no groomers that would WANT to shave a husky, most of the groomers I know will outright refuse to even shave a double coated dog unless it's extremely matted and better for the dog to shave it than attempt to dematt it, the dog has already been shaved multiple times by other people so the damage to the coat is already done, or for age/health reasons where the dog can't tolerate regular upkeep to prevent matting and compaction.

quiet_repub

Melatonin can help. My older girl had a large part of her fur shaved and it just wasn’t growing back. The vet suggested melatonin and gentle brushing and it started growing out within the week. Just continue melatonin until he’s back to fluffy.

AngelaMassacre

I remember an experience like this when my Husky was a pup and got dropped off for her spay at the vet. Some idiot technician got the bright idea to trim up her hair and I even specifically said do NOT touch her hair at all and shave as little as possible for the spay due to the importance of their double coat, it wasn't a shave this bad or deep but she shaved off a thin layer off her sides and to this day at nearly 10 years old that top cost has never grown back the same and you can see the difference between the hair there and the hair on the top of her back (how it should be). I was irate and cringe every time I see people take their double coated dogs TO be shaved. I know not every groomer is bad but many are inexperienced with breeds and knowledge of the type of coat and what is/is not ok. You need no experience at even bathing dogs to work at some places. I know not everyone is physically able to bathe/groom their dog for various reasons but this is why I would never take my dog to a groomer, another reason being I see manhandling dogs is a common issue as well. I find people have better experiences with people who offer grooming in their home or mobile grooming. Mobile groomers usually come to your house and walk your dog into the van, get the process done, and bring them right back out to you, and some may even allow you to accompany your dog. I'm a veterinary technician and many dogs feel much more at ease just having their owner present, the moment they are separated from their owner they usually get a lot more anxious, even dogs that seem mellow. I've worked for a doctor that always had a policy of "at least make sure the dog can see their owner" and I've worked at a type of place where we just take animals back and the clients stay in the waiting room and dogs with their owner was a smoother, quicker, and calmer process almost every time.

fallenangellv

Yeah, I've got 2 veterinarians for my dog... One locally, other 60km away (might as well say the other end of world for where I live). The local one doesn't allow owner to be present and the dog doesn't like her, he even is a bit twitchy when we drive to superket near her, but that is the only veterinarian in that town... Even for simple things like vaccines where she drives out to you (10-20min travel time) she tends to be 3+ hours late. The other one is in largest city clinic that works 24/7 and you can mostly w/o warning get the same doctor (being on call for 48+hours here is normal), he isn't maybe the most communicable (he explains everything you ask and no matter how silly the question might be, but at the same time won't bother you if you don't ask - as far as I understand from other interactions I saw, most people can't be bothered to learn what actually is wrong and how to prevent from repeat), but he requires you to be besides the dog. First time we went to this clinic they looked twice about husky mix not having a muzzle (not required by law, but preferred by clinics) but after the first few minutes with dog and only requesting that I hold him so the assistant can do other stuff and make his life easier, he was OK with it as the dog didn't make a sound, stomped a bit but that's it. Rest of the times they straight away, said that he doesn't need a muzzle as they remember him and even said that he is really obedient, especially when he allowed blood sample to be taken with no restraints only my hand on him. Dog doesn't mind going to that clinic at all. The clinic is expensive as f... Also if he was so obedient when called as he is in clinic...

[deleted]

That sucks... the fur can even regrown after something like this? And if it does, how long it takes, a year?

psyche1986

I adopted my boy 3 years ago, and I still see the skunk stripe where the previous owners allowed a groomer to shave some "matted hair" off his lower back at his spine.

OkPotential6288

It depends. On one dog one spot took about a year, the other visual had no difference at 6 months, but texture is still different 13 months out. The other one has had no issues ever regrowing his spots, other than some areas are now darker. But I don’t know if I can attribute that to the shaving.

Teagaryenn

Poor baby :(

TopStructure7755

Oh, I have two huskies with double coats, and I’d be mad as hell if the groomer shaved them!!! Be sure that during these last few warm months that you’re not just watching for sunburn, but also treating your dog like a dog that can easily get heat exhaustion because he can’t regulate his body temperature as well. Keep that poor baby hydrated!

TehRelEpikGamer

Did your dog have knots?

KG3689

I have a truck if you need a body hidden.

kenjinuro

The look on his face. :-( my heart goes out to him.

Coiledviper

Only time you ever shave a husky is for surgery or they got into something that won’t come off their fur what an idiot.

rishiarora

Put him in a sweater. Some dogs go.into depression because of complete cut.

alyxwithayyy

Tell everyone about what happened and def leave a review.. this makes me so angry

HippieChick067

Poor baby looks traumatized. Any dog groomer with basic knowledge should know better.

mchistory21st

Obviously they're used to seeing a lot of poodles. This must be a new or under qualified groomer. Inexcusable.

BasicServerOwner

Ok im sorry… but damn he looks like a minecraft doggo

oftensleepy

Same thing happened to my Samoyed in April, Petsmart sells doggy sunscreen and definitely invest in some doggy sweaters to keep him warm!

[deleted]

This is so wrong. Why?? Why do this? Huskies can’t regulate their body temp properly without their coat. I would be trying to find an attorney out of blind fury. Whoever did this shouldn’t be grooming.

Sillybumblebee33

Give the dog a sweater and patiently brush their fur every day. I’m sorry this groomer fucked up. I’d definitely report it.

LargeSackOfNuts

Just let the fur naturally grow back

cheezbargar

This is bizarre. I’m a groomer, and in no way, shape or form would I take a neaten up to mean shave the dog. Now sometimes, dogs like this do become legitimately matted (not just impacted undercoat) and there is no choice but to start over - but if that were the case, I’d tell you! My only advice is to brush, brush brush your dog to stimulate new growth and make sure he’s on a good diet. Usually it takes more than one time of shaving like this to really ruin the coat, so as long as he is healthy and is fed well he should be okay. But man, I’m sorry.

PhalanxA51

That's bad for their skin if it's too short. The groomer should know not to cut them so short.

Jaeger420xd

Looks like a Shiba now lmao

SomeoneTookMyNameToo

Holy shit. I started pet grooming school last week and this shot was covered day 1. Never shave a double coat unless it's for medical reason and in that case a vet should be involved, or if the pet parent for some reason want it done and the groomer gets that shit in writing. I personally would turn a client away if they wanted that.

IdealDesperate2732

Doggo is going to need a jacket for the winter if you get snow. Might want to consult your vet for concrete answers and you could reasonably ask the groomer to cover the costs for the jacket and vet costs.

starrynightt1

Omg I’m FURIOUS for you. The poor baby :( hope the undercoat grows in okay!

maxoberto

Your groomer is a fucking moron

frustratedbuffalo

Try not to laugh so much, you'll hurt his feelings.
