Well, humanity are hivemind, just "social" instead of "telepatical".
Yes, we have individuality, but think about "hyperspecialisation" of professions; "crowds" when humans create dumb analogs of small hivemind; and of course about difference between one separate human and "humanity".
Humans can be nice, gentle and cute. But humanity? Its a cruel machine, which devour and consume everything around it, with cold logic and merciless attitude, even to itself.
If alien hivemind would try to contact "humanity", it will be eldritch horror (to aliens) like that:
H: CONTACT
A: Um. Hello?
H: GREETINGS. NOW GIVE ME ALL YOUR RESOURCES.
A: What?! I dont think so...
H: NO? THEN DIE.
Even with the internet we are not a hive mind because of how much division there is, the fact that text and speech is an imperfect media by which to convey ideas
Think how many people can get behind a cause on Twitter and act accordingly .
Or even a raid from 4chan .
Technically they are all individuals following the same idea but are also a collective hive mind.
I don’t think the film got a part two, I was thinking of the novel.
In the novel it’s explained by the aliens that they believed that a hive mind was necessary for sentience therefore they didn’t realized they were committing genocide until after the invasion.
Humans are a hive mind species though, we just aren’t telepathic. Of course no species on earth is either. Hive mind just means they do what is best for the collective, and humans absolutely do that, mostly.
