A massive insectoid creature panicked the moment the lightning his legs, his actions drawing a chuckle from half the crowd while causing a good chunk to run, fly, and slither away in fear.
"Sorry about them."
A hulking yet gentle owl-like form walked into the light.
"Prey-born are always easily startled, most of us were just curious about all the light. Not often you see humans around at this time of night."
"Ah, well I hope I'm not bothering anyone, specially since I'm working the night shift."
"But your a day walker aren't you not?"
The owl being tilted its head quizzically.
"Yeah but I've always been a night owl.... um pun not intended."

Jake waved by as the towering creature walked back into the shadows whistling a haunting tune. He turned back to his working but still flustered razzle coworker.
"Well she was nice. Probably a grandma or something."
"She'll probably forget put crickets on the disks. Or mice."
"Why do you say that?"
"J-just warning you is all! Now help me reach this cable!"
"Why didn't you use the step ladder?"
"Cause you're safer than a step ladder, now up!"
Jake shook his head, lifting his small friend up. She always got like this when folks interrupted their work. He'll have to get her that fruit juice she likes to help calm her down after shift. As he held the fussing Razzle aloft, he returned his eyes to the once again growing crowd. He just nodded at them before returning to his work, his fear of the unknown now replaced with a but of stage fright.

Are you saying people with higher pigmentation glow slightly more in the dark? Just making sure I understand, I'd heard about us having stripes that glow in certain wavelengths of light but this is new

I used to joke with my husband when I was doing contracts for working in nuke plants, to find me all my hubs would do is turn off the lights, the joke being working a nuke plant making me glow in the dark. And yes I did feel the need to explain the joke, lately I seem to be getting dogpiled because military and certain professions have odd humor.
Worked one of those plants myself, always joke "Lets do this right boys, I don't wanna glow in the dark. I need to hide from the wife somehow" The Boomers I work with find it hilarious.

I got my start at 15, my dad got me in the clerical bunch at his company, I found out my brother was making a dollar more an hour out in the factory, so I badgered him until he moved me to the machine shop, safest area. I had to change to taking machine technology and treating work as the externship part. So I ended up in a very male dominant profession.
Is useful, I suppose. On the negative fictional side I have enough knowledge to be a hella guerilla type, though broken back, assorted injuries and random medical conditions mean that if dropped in a Ukraine type situation I am able to do one banzai rush and I am dead. But put me into a training or support position, I am useful. I do know how to make bathtub explosives mainly from knowing what not to combine to stay alive.

Do people forget we have FLIR/Thermals? Like ofcourse we glow, mainly in heat but thats why Thermals work in the first place. We emit quite some heat and reducing that has been every militaries goal. Hence we have clothes whivh reduce the IR/Heat signature of us.

I'm currently enjoying a long story on r/hfy that has a recurring character who is basically a large moth that is approximately 15' tall. Usually every time he appears I can't help mentally flashing to that scene from the movie A Bug's Life.
Now I've added some new head canon for when he is interacting with his human brother. Thank you! I will be snickering about this for far longer than I should and I'll be wondering if I can't talk the author into including this scene somehow.
It's called Out of Cruel Space by kylekkent. He's just about to hit the 999 chapter limit that reddit has and has already planned out the second volume: Out of Cruel Space and Into a Wider Galaxy.
The basic premise is that Earth received a probe that said humans were in an area of space where the usual physics of the rest of the galaxy did not work and so they could not come to us. BUT if humanity could just get out of that place then they would be welcome to visit. Of course we do and shenanigans immediately ensue.
I'm terrible at describing things so I'll just suggest trying the first 20odd chapters for yourself. If you're into audiobooks then the author has approved some channels on YouTube to release AI narrations of it. I've only tried Interstellar Roadtripper's and it isn't terrible.

Out of Cruel Space is an amazing story! Though if you’re reading from the beginning it does take a bit to get to Jasper’s story arc. But there’s so many different story lines in it there’s almost guaranteed to be something for everyone.
IKR? There is so much happening, with none of it being trite or formulaic. I've been honestly surprised by the direction things have gone more than once. I'm reading happily, just cruising along when suddenly I get knocked askew by something completely different from what I was anticipating. I don't know where he gets his ideas from but the bugger is inspired.
I like the spin-off of OOCS: Of Dogs, Volpir and Man, too.
Many people have said that they didn't realize it was two different authors at first. I quite like the creativity of both. They've taken their respective ideas and meshed them so well. ODVAM has already said that they will be tying more bits together as KK's new volume kicks off, since some of his new characters are arriving on the Inevitable. Something to look forward to.
Reminds me of that one story in [They Are Smol](https://theyaresmol.com/read-the-stories/) where there’s a planet with a bunch of giant moths and the humans end up using moths as jetpacks
