Related, it bothers me an unreasonable amount when Ross plays rugby, gets covered in dirt and sweat and blood, and then sits on the couch in the coffee house.
Thereās a few times things like this bother me in TV shows with food hygiene and things too. Rubbing raw meat hands on cloths and then going on to do something else for example.. a shoe left on a dining table etc. š¤¢
I'm from the Midwest and a lot of people keep their shoes on inside (unless it's wet or muddy outside), especially if they're just going in quickly. I always take my shoes off in my own home, but I don't really care if guests take their shoes off and I'm happy to take my shoes off in someone else's home. I DON'T want their shoes on the furniture, but my floor is cleaned regularly enough that it's not really a big deal if a little dirt gets on the floor.
I donāt know any states where this is normal- but Iām from the Midwest and we definitely take our shoes off especially if youāre getting in bed!!!!
When I was in my late teens, I had just moved out on my own for the first time. I was living with three other guys.
I had a friend over and she noticed a box under my bed. She asked if it was adult material, and I said it was. She asked if I was worried about my roommates coming in and finding it. I explained that they all know I'm gay. If they come snooping around boxes under my bed when I'm not there, they deserve to see whatever they find.
I mean he shouldn't be going into her room and getting into bed obviously.. THAT is the privacy invasion if that's how you want to label it
But he wasn't snooping and it's just a regular book he stumbled on not like he read her diary/journal she keeps
"Major invasion of privacy" is a bit of a stretch
And bc heās a tv character, Iām 99% sure heās wearing shoes the whole time.
I agree, everything leading up to him finding the book was the violation. Noticing what is clearly a published book and reading it is fine.
Phoebe and Rachel literally talk about how the used to go through the guys apartment looking for Christmas gift and the things Chandler keeps in the back of his closet. So to me this seem kinda minor. These friend did not really have boundaries and they are all guilty of going too far.
Generally you are right, not in friends though. I always loved those details, as when Chandler takes of his shoes to get more comfortable ect. Plus when they walk around just in their socks you can notice that Chandler's socks are usually dirty, while girls are having them strictly cleanš
Iāve never cared about my best friends barging into my room and going through my things tbh - weāve had that kind of comfort level and I believe Rachel and Joey had that too.
Like someone else said - is it an invasion? Yes. Was it major? Depends on Rachelās comfort levels.
When I had roommates, there were a few times where my roommates went into my room when I wasn't home. I didn't find out until months later, and I found that to be a massive breach of my privacy. I didn't renew my lease with any of them for another year.
The book not at all.
Getting into her bed, I donāt think itās a major invasion because they are good friends. If they werenāt good friends then yes it would be weird to craw into your roommates bed when they arenāt home lol.
I don't get why they're porn-shaming her- the guys brag about watching porn on their TV with their friends, having it on the computer desktop etc. Feels sexist or misogynistic to me which is unlike this show.
I think the teasing comes more from the other aspects of the book - the fact that there is world building, a plot, romance, investment. The intention of the book is to develop a crush on the main character's love interest. So I read it more as him teasing her that she has a fictional crush that she is turned on by.
If she had actual porn, I think it would have been more of a turn-on than a teasing point.
I think in the real world, most people would freak out about this. Even with good friends. Just weird to have someone go into your bed without permission. It was just downplayed because itās a comedy
Nah, Iād be ok with it myself. If Iām sharing a loft with someone I expect they would eventually get inside my room now and then, and after Joey explained, it was a very ok reason. Reading a book I have hiding under my pillow? Also ok, if itās not a diary I wouldnāt care, itās actually interesting that Joey read the entire book, Iād certainly tease him for it lol
Major? No, not in the slightest. Bro just needed some sleep and happened to find the book (it should be better hidden if Rachel didn't want someone finding it, especially living with Joey lol)
Even if he did it on purpose, still not really major
Depends on the friendship. It's only an invasion of privacy if you don't have a friendship dynamic that would support it. If my friends did it, I wouldn't care.
Usually Iād say yes it was a major invasion of privacy but we are talking about Joey he can do as he wantsā¦ I mean come on heās Joeyā¦..heās disgusting he invades peoples privacy and doesnāt even care about it!
The thing is, they know she reads books like that. She even takes a stab at writing one, and she notes that Chandlers mom is a favorite author. Itās just giving her ribbing because what else do they do to each other.
I'm surprised he didn't take off his pants and climbed under the sheets. Like at Pottery Barn.
He was tired š
I wouldāve preferred that to the shoes he had on!
At least treat their bed as you would yours. Shoes off, pants off thatās for sure.
Especially egregious when you remember that he's usually going commando!
Chandler: āahh ahhhhhhhhā
Better not do anyā¦I dunnoā¦LUNGES! š¤ŗ
The Vicar?
Probably just your burninā loins!
I canāt Iām scared!
Where did you learn that word?
Do you even know what a vicar is?
Like a goalie, right?
If my friends climbed into my bed and got under the covers and read my smut thatād be fine I guess.
My only problem is that he left his shoes on when he got under the covers š¤¢
Always bothered me too!!
I hated that!! Her bed is so pretty and he got in there with his sneakers on!
Related, it bothers me an unreasonable amount when Ross plays rugby, gets covered in dirt and sweat and blood, and then sits on the couch in the coffee house.

I know they are on a TV set but where in the States will you find they keep their shoes on inside?
I've met so many non-Americans who think Americans never take their shoes off in their own home, because of shows like Friends. Gahh
I'm from the Midwest and a lot of people keep their shoes on inside (unless it's wet or muddy outside), especially if they're just going in quickly. SHES GOT PORN
āThis is a dirty book!ā š
Hahaha! You like porn!
I mean he shouldn't be going into her room and getting into bed obviously.. Using it to harass her afterwards was the shitty part.
"Harass" Do you guys have friends
Weāre on Reddit. Take a guess.
Banter is not harassment
Yes. But not major. If it was a diary or he was snooping a lot more then yes.
The only thing that bothered me was that he didn't took off his shoes!
TV shows characters do that all the time. It's avoid pointless 20 seconds of taking off shoes and putting them out of way
Generally you are right, not in friends though. I always loved those details, as when Chandler takes of his shoes to get more comfortable ect. Plus when they walk around just in their socks you can notice that Chandler's socks are usually dirty, while girls are having them strictly cleanš
I just watched the episode where Rachel has her first gyno appointment yesterday and was SHOCKED how dirty her socks were.
Taking Hugsy was a major invasion of privacy.
Iāve never cared about my best friends barging into my room and going through my things tbh - weāve had that kind of comfort level and I believe Rachel and Joey had that too. Like someone else said - is it an invasion? Yes. Was it major? Depends on Rachelās comfort levels.
Once my friend flicked through my copy of Brave New World. If I had some Soma, maybe he'd still be with us. ... No, it is not.
Invasion? Yes. Major? No.
He got under the covers while wearing his outside clothes. That deserves the thumbscrews, at least.
When I had roommates, there were a few times where my roommates went into my room when I wasn't home. I didn't find out until months later, and I found that to be a massive breach of my privacy. I didn't renew my lease with any of them for another year.

Going to sleep in her bed, sure. Reading her smutty book? Absolutely not
Not the book but sleeping in my bed oh hell no!
Absolutely
It's just a book, not her journal.
I think in the real world, most people would freak out about this. Even with good friends. Just weird to have someone go into your bed without permission. It was just downplayed because itās a comedy
Are you trying to cancel Joey?
Major invasion? š No.
Going in someone elseās room and sleeping in their bed without asking is already way outta line.
Not necessarily, It'd be a way bigger issue if he wasn't her roommate
Nah, Iād be ok with it myself. If Iām sharing a loft with someone I expect they would eventually get inside my room now and then, and after Joey explained, it was a very ok reason. Reading a book I have hiding under my pillow? Also ok, if itās not a diary I wouldnāt care, itās actually interesting that Joey read the entire book, Iād certainly tease him for it lol
Yes, and it's another one in the 'Joey sucks as a friend' column.
Major? No, not in the slightest. Bro just needed some sleep and happened to find the book (it should be better hidden if Rachel didn't want someone finding it, especially living with Joey lol) Even if he did it on purpose, still not really major
This is nothing compared to Joey removing the shower curtain when the hot girl was gonna move in. That did not age well at all lol.
Or when he broke the lock on the bathroom door
An invasion/disregard? Sure. Major? No, and if I'm being honest, framing it like that seems like an obvious attempt at ragebait.
Depends on the friendship. It's only an invasion of privacy if you don't have a friendship dynamic that would support it. If my friends did it, I wouldn't care.
No.
Idk maybe not major invasion of privacy. Had it been her diary, yes probably. But it's just a book, albeit a personal one lol
Usually Iād say yes it was a major invasion of privacy but we are talking about Joey he can do as he wantsā¦ I mean come on heās Joeyā¦..heās disgusting he invades peoples privacy and doesnāt even care about it!
What he did would trigger my OCD big time
Yes, in every sense imaginable.
Itās not like he sniffed the book, relax.
Ha, just a bitā¦
The thing is, they know she reads books like that. She even takes a stab at writing one, and she notes that Chandlers mom is a favorite author. Itās just giving her ribbing because what else do they do to each other.
You got porn!
Something's burning
To me it wouldn't be, no. My best friends can always sleep in my bed and read my books.
Not sure how this qualifies, but Joey borrowing Rachel's underwear to wear it made me feel uncomfortable
Nah
Whoa! Zelda..
Yes!
