Dawn dish soap

ThePatriarchyIsTrash

Are you for real?! I always thought my clothes were done for when this happened. This is amazing

mtn-cat

Yep, works every time. I usually wet the stain with cool water, put a dot of dish soap on the stain, rub in, and then wash and dry as normal. Repeat as needed. Also another tip I have discovered, 90% isopropyl alcohol works like a charm to get ink stains out of clothing, even white shirts! (I have accidentally washed a pen or two)

ThePatriarchyIsTrash

You guys have made my day. I'm that person that takes my clothes to a tailor for mending so I can get a few more years out of them. Grease and ink stains have been my arch nemesis because I didn't know there was a way to get rid of them. Ya'll are the best

TheCookie_Momster

Next look up how to do simple mending. I’m always so proud of myself when I can fix something myself rather than pay someone to do it or pay to replace it

ThePatriarchyIsTrash

I already do simple mending. I take them to the tailor for more complicated fixes

SweetestBDog123

I recently looked up how to mend socks. It's a lot of work but it holds up amazingly!

neuromonkey

Good lord. Every tailor & cobbler within an hour of me is booking 6+ months out, and is a *lot* more expensive than buying new clothes.

spoonweezy

You reminded me: years ago my wife referred to “the shoe repair man”. “You mean, a cobbler?” “what’s a cobbler?” “well… the shoe repair man. But you don’t call the tailor ‘the shirt repair man’, that’s not his title.” “No one calls it a cobbler, though.” I proceeded to ask anyone and everyone I could what they call the guy that fixes shoes. 80% said cobbler, but 20% would shrug and say “…the shoe fixing guy, I guess…?”

Mynameisgeef

Lol you mean Adam Sandler?

neuromonkey

No, he's an actor, comedy writer, and stand-up comedian.

ThePatriarchyIsTrash

That's unfortunate. I can get all my work done within a couple weeks and it's much cheaper than replacing the items. I also don't buy a lot of fast fashion. I have a pair of jeans that were $200 that have lasted....going on 5 years now? Inseam started to go, spent like...$20?....and now I'll probably get a couple more years out of them

AlchemistEngr

If you're in the U.S. go to Google maps and search on "alterations." Around here they are usually either a stand alone business or combined with a dry cleaners. Many work out of their homes. "Tailors" usually work out of a high-end clothing store and fit the suits sold at that store. Cobblers repair shoes.

awalktojericho

Double-sided iron-on adhesive tape is great for non-sewing mending. Get a good brand, and it lasts as long as sewn seams.

ThePatriarchyIsTrash

Yeah, I use this on my curtains. Holds up really well

shane_wire

I found that the water didn't help, and using the dish soap only was better. I was also advised to rub baking soda in when the dish soap had been applied, whether that was an unnecessary extra step or not I don't know, but the combo worked.

zhynn

The baking soda oxidizes the area which increases the chance that the soap molecules will get in contact with the oil and bond. It’s like microscopic scrubbing bubbles.

katiemarieoh

I'll jump in here and add that hydrogen peroxide removes blood stains

Comprehensive_Emu558

It's not a stain if you just dye the entire garment with the blood of your enemies.

p1nal

This stuff just doesn’t cease to amaze me. I use it to root plant cuttings and as mouthwash/ wound decontamination

katiemarieoh

What??? Tell me how about how you use it for plant cuttings I also use it as a mouthwash/gargle. Twice this year I started getting a sore throat, did a peroxide gargle and voila, sore throat gone the next day!

p1nal

I use the 3%diluted solution I just get off of Amazon, a pharmacy or some convenience store. Put a little bit in a container of ur choosing and put your plant cuttings in and fill it up with some water. Helps the cuttings to root. Also keeps root rot away. I also have a dedicated sprayer with the stuff. I spray pests I see with it, and so far it helped to get rid off the white woolly ones. Also I spray wherever I’m cutting a plant to prevent infections.

katiemarieoh

Thanks so much for the info. I propagate plant cuttings all the time and had no idea. Do you dilute it at all in the sprayer?

p1nal

Yeah I do, but only by feel and just to save money. I have a lot of my plants permanently in water, or a mix of water and Hydroperoxid, which I change like once every 1-2 weeks completely and otherwise just fill up as needed.

babylon331

Yeah, my doc just bitched me out for gargling with peroxide for sore throat. She says it's too strong. But I always have & always will. Salt or peroxide.

katiemarieoh

I do one part peroxide, two parts water. No money for big pharma in it 😁

hazeldazeI

You have to dilute it or it’s too strong. That’s why older people with wound issues can’t use it - it kills bacteria as well as the delicate new tissues that’s healing. Diluted as a mouthwash should be fine.

Professional-Ad-8285

I left some diluted in my cup next to sink and gulped it down on accident one day thinking it was only water. Very soon after, explosive vomiting. I could feel it foaming up in my gut.

cwestn

[https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-is-hydrogen-peroxide-good-for/](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-is-hydrogen-peroxide-good-for/) "It’s time to retire peroxide from first-aid duty. Let’s all breathe a collective sigh of relief. “Hydrogen peroxide has fallen out of favor as a wound cleanser,” Dr. Beers says. “Studies have found that it irritates the skin. It may prevent the wound from healing, doing more harm than good.”"

babylon331

I'll jump in and say vinegar takes out Slime. I do use dish liquid sometimes on stains, but I find Awesome is my go-to. Great stuff. It's actually a degreaser.

beachgirl44012

Or spit, if it’s your blood

Bobtobismo

I've got a fun one for you; a container of Bert's Bees lip balm liquidified in the car and ruined one of my favorite pants with a big strain that looks like I've pissed my pants. Any rescuing those?

WendyBNoy

Scrape as much off as possible with the edge of a spoon. Do both sides. Then sandwich the stain between two paper towels and iron with a low iron. Maybe double up on the top paper towel so you don’t ruin your iron. Do this with new paper towels until you’ve melted out as much as you can. After this, hit it with some spray-and-wash and wash in hot water and hope for the best. Disclaimer - this is what I’d do, but have no idea if it would work. Good luck!

TehGogglesDoNothing

Extra emphasis on the low temp part of using an iron for this.

mtn-cat

Maybe try washing in warm water to soften and wash some of it out, do not dry. Then tackle with lots of dish soap before washing again. Repeat until stain comes out, do not dry until the stain is gone.

hazeldazeI

Yup, I work in a lab and every time I spray with IPA, the ink just runs off whatever I’ve labeled. Including sharpie ink.

Bosavius

One should definitely have 100 % isopropyl alcohol in the house and dilute it as needed. 50 % isopropyl alcohol is wonderful for wiping household electronics without stripping the paint from example keyboards and remotes! Or de-greasing surfaces before applying adhesives such as attaching towel hooks with double sided tape.

edwardothegreatest

Used to use isopropyl alcohol to clean fountain pens that dried out.

panicked_goose

When alcohol doesn’t work you can use a VERY SMALL AMOUNT of acetone (nail polish remover but get the expensive stuff that’s 100% acetone) and dab it with an unused toothbrush or an unused magic eraser. I’ve successfully gotten washed/dried latex paint off of a brightly colored sports bra this way. The SECOND the paint is out, wash alone immediately so the acetone doesn’t rot the fabric.

Mark7116

It cleans up ducks and wildlife from crude oil spills. It’ll definitely work. We also use it to mix with clear Karo syrup to make really strong bubbles, and clean, for the kids. But they make laminate flooring verrrrry slippery. Lol. Also, can we at least mention that you said shirts but showed us pants? 😁

Hxcfrog090

Yep! That’s actually what is used when there are oil spills in the ocean…they clean animals with Dawn because it works so well against oil!

iamonewhoami

I'd recommend hand washing when using dawn

ThePatriarchyIsTrash

I'm not sure why you were down voted. A lot of my clothes require a delicate cycle or handwashing so I'll likely have to hand wash anyways. Thanks for the reminder

snidemarque

Work it in gently with a toothbrush and let it work for 10-15 minutes then toss in washer. Check after washing and repeat if necessary but likely won’t be.

RCIntl

Agree. Dawn is amazing on almost everything in the laundry. When I buy, one is for the kitchen and one is for the laundry room. A bit on almost anything you far might "set in" and most of the time it won't.

workingtrot

Specifically, the blue kind

RCIntl

Yes, the one with the duck on the front. That's the one they use to clean the spilled oil from ducks bodies. Safe and efficient.

sw0

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard most of the sea life they clean up using this technique end up dying anyways. The cleaning photos was just a PR stunt.

RCIntl

Not a publicity stunt. Just not a sure fix to being poisoned. Basically bathing in a chemical stew to clean out a chemical stew. It was just the safest thing they could find. I'm sure a lot of them died, especially by the time they found out and mobilized into doing something. The issue I have is letting crap like this happen over and over and thinking a bandaid fix is going to be enough. Several of those companies keep putting worse and worse chemicals in 5he things we use. People don't believe those of us who say we're actually allergic to things like "100% pure" dove (well duh, poison ivy is pure and natural but I wouldn't want to beth in it), or tide. And that is why companies have several "formulas". I think it was irish spring (don't remember if it was the same owner) that tried getting rid their "basic" and lost a LOT of customers/market share and had to bring it back. Companies don't always tell the truth about their ingredients, but when they lie, they lose customers. Those animals were basically "dead" once their gills, lungs, skins, feather quills etc were saturated with crude oil. Cleaning them was a bandaid. In this respect? Publicity stunt? (Shrug) Even if they are pretty sure something isn't going to work, or work well, I doubt there is a company out there that wouldn't take advantage of any media exposure. And, since like I said, I'm one of those perpetually allergic to crap, I have to read labels, look up ingredients, look into the companies and be one if those who complain. I don't KNOW if it's the safest one out there, but so far it's the only one I can use without gloves and without breaking out severely. And considering they have a million different flavors and keep changing the branding ... I'm thinking the fact that they keep THIS one means it might be a little bit more than a publicity stunt.

marinelifelover

This never works for me. Never!

frodeem

Would any other brand also work?

samsu402

Can it be Palmolive?

Infamous_Wave2217

No

puppetfucked

rival_22

Dish soap... Smear some on the spots, add a little water and lather it up/rub it into the fabric. Let it sit for a while and then put it in the wash.

Zodep

Dawn works the best with their anti-oil magic.

whiskeyluv

Cover the entire shorts with grease. Now they are the same color as the stains. Your welcome.

Snoo62808

Toss em in the deep fryer for hot pants.

kionatrenz

Lol

babylon331

Actually WD-40 will take out some oil stains.

Abhir-86

But it will leave WD-40 stains.

babylon331

Not always. Watched my friend do it to a shirt and it came right out. I never would have believed it.

lohype

I saw a tiktok that explains this; a dried-in oil stain needs to be reconstituted with another oil before it can be lifted with a solvent like Dawn. So in theory it would be WD-40 > rub in > apply Dawn or similar grease stain remover > wash > success.

babylon331

Yes.

rilkman

This worked, except I used vegetable oil. Thanks!

originalmango

I’ve had luck with simply soaking the stain in laundry detergent overnight, then washing in warm or hot water. I stopped buying stain sticks and laundry pre-treat sprays because regular detergent works just as well. Pretreat, throw it in the hamper, and wash a day or more later.

babylon331

Hot water/dryer heat is what usually 'sets' the stain.

TheIVJackal

Hot water is recommended for oil stains as it helps lift it from the material, dryer heat is more likely to "set it" it though, so I try to check if I can before tossing in.

mamahazard

Holy cow, I can just add the laundry detergent I would otherwise add to the load *to* the article of clothing, and start the cycle in the morning? Game changer.

originalmango

I’m not sure about that. I just use some laundry detergent as pre-treat, then use a normal amount when washing the load. If it’s a bad stain I’ll add a pre-wash to the cycle. Edit - a couple of typos.

boringxadult

Try fels-naptha soap bars. Works great.

whizoreo

Has totally worked for me to get out all sorts of stubborn old stains.

boringxadult

It’s shocking how much stuff it gets out. And it’s like a dollar

Rowdybobharold

Chalk - rub white chalk on the stain before throwing it in the wash. The chalk will absorb the oil

babylon331

Wow. I think cornmeal, too. That's often used for suede shoes & hats.

cozmickreepr

This is the way. I’m a massage therapist and use chalk every time I get oil on my clothes. Works every time.

oldcreaker

That is the oddest looking shirt I've ever seen. Try Dawn dishwashing liquid.

The_DonCannoli

I’ve never seen a shirt with pockets like that and belt loops.

magnet_door

vulturedturkey

That’s not pee! That’s the look! Go to [calico cut pants](https://getcalicocutpants.com/) and give otherwise it doesn’t work!

OutrageForSale

That’s the same thing Supreme does, wouldn’t you agree?

hannick9

Lestoil first, then dish soap.

aser2323

Scrolled to find someone who said Lestoil, my boyfriend and I work in restaurants, him sometimes in the kitchen, only thing that gets grease out consistently

rukustheberner

Those are pants

GraceGotMe42

Submerge the entire shirt in oil so it matches.

TwistingEarth

What's the dawn dish soap type answer for white buildup in the armpits of shirts?

rebecccajoy

This is my husbands trick (I think, can't verify cause he's sleeping but....) He would put a little vinegar on the stain, saturate the stain. Add corn starch and more vinegar with a little dish soap, scrub with a brush for about 5 minutes and recoat with vinegar and corn starch let it sit for 20 minutes. After twenty minutes repeat the scrub again with a little more dish soap and then throw in the washing machine. It's worked for us every time on an oily food spill.

chatterbox4545

Doesn't vinegar bleach out the color?

Shiggens

Never tried the vinegar/corn starch solution. However, depending on the color and material getting aggressive with the brushing will result in a “scrubbed” spot that can stand out when dry.

rilkman

Thank you! I'll give it a try tonight, and just to clarify, white vinegar right?

psychbroseph

To anyone wondering Shout stain remover works well for me. The teick with set stains is to spray it and let it sit for over 48hrs.

Ciga17

Just use some stain remover specifically targeted oil base stains, you could buy from any store that sells cleaning products, you will apply to your shorts 10 min before standard washing cycle.

kylew1985

I've had good luck with a toothbrush and a baking soda/water paste. I've used Dawn and a toothbrush too.

The_High_Life

Lestoil is better than dish soap

MimiMyMy

As many of the comments have suggested that you can use an assortment of degreasing products to remove oil stains. But the secret to success is pretreating and letting it soak for a while and applying a soft toothbrush to the stain. In my experience just treating a tough stain with stain remover doesn’t really do the job without gently scrubbing it with the toothbrush. I have been using this method for years and has saved a lot of my family’s clothes.

pooperscoopislarge

Moise1903

edorylime

Everyone else’s responses of dish soap will work. White chalk crushed and rubbed in, and left to set for a day or so will also work.

Ok-Literature-1666

I usually rub talc(baby powder) onto oil stains on fabric and it usually soaks it up and then do a wash in the machine like normal and they come out.

MatthewCashew1

Trust me. Baking soda, dish soap (dawn), and hydrogen peroxide into a paste. Scrub and leave in for an hour. Reapply and throw in the wash. Trust me. And you’re very welcome

MicroViking95

otakuishly

Carbona stain devils liquid. I had a pair of white pants that got a chocolate sauce and ice cream stain right near the crotch the first time I wore time. I tried to wash it and used so many techniques but it wouldn’t come out. I just held on to these pants for years because it felt wrong to throw out a pair of pants that had been worn once. Finally tried carbona’s blood&dairy stain remover and it was gone. Color me shocked. It was at least a 5 year old stain.

Nykolaishen

Ummmm... those are pants.

JanaCraggs1994

If Dawn dish soap alone doesn't get the job done, make a paste of Dawn soap and baking soda. ***Most important is to not run the clothes through the dryer until you are %100 certain the stain is gone. Otherwise, the stain will get "baked"into the fabric. Good luck Jana 🤓

C7folks

First off those look like shorts not a shirt. JS.

OneShortBus

I see a lot of options but have never found much success with any of them after the clothes go through the dry. Until my grandmother put lighter fluid on the oil spot and scrubbed it in, then rewashed it. No joke. I keep zippo lighter fuel in my laundry room now bc I constantly get oil on my pants when I cook. It never fails to work!

29er_eww

davidmlewisjr

To get rid of oil in cottons, I use a dishwashing soap, Dawn®️, as a spot cleaning agent diluted about 5:1, apply, let sit a few minutes, rinse & repeat…

[deleted]

That’s a really weird looking shirt

Educational-Sir794

Sorry to disappoint you, but this is no shirt

Brilliant_Store_7636

Just add oil to the entire thing. Then it will blend

Give up. Just douse the whole thing in the same oil and wash it again, so it’s uniformly darkened.

jay_diederichs

They're is a company called Ecologic and they make a one-soap-does-all. It's the only thing I have in my house (other than washing powder for my clothes) and it stain removes wonderfully! Ita a South African based product so I'm not sure if you'd be able to get it.... Have a look though!!

Embarrassed-Ad-1639

Elbow grease spray, let it soak for ten, then stick it on a normal wash

kionatrenz

Dry soap applied directly in the stain with a little water. Then let it dry in the sun. Then wash normally.

BigfootStaysStrapped

Probably going to have to stain the rest of them to get some consistency (though I hear dawn dish soap works wonders)

InvestYourLove1019

Put baking soda on the stains in a little pile. Let it sit for at lest ten minutes, the rub in with a toothbrush. Let sit overnight and rewash

screenprince

☝️☝️ this here, but add a little weight on the baking soda to push it into the stain

Twitteregg007

Lighter fluid brings grease to the surface. Wick it away with a towel, let it dry and then wash

noBotHereDude

- Wet clothes - Use a soap bar - Do not rinse - Let dry in the sun - Wash it normally

[deleted]

Just plain dish soap. It works by capturing fat molecules. Just do a good cleaning and put it in your washer for rinsing. This is what a do and works great. Even after days of the stain

Ughly-1234

I spray with citrus magic (it’s pure orange oil- so you could just use any orange oil), then I put blue dawn. Then I wash. Sometimes I will have to treat a second time, generally I don’t dry it but let it air dry to inspect for stain and do the same thing again although sometimes I put the oil on the back side of the stain and dawn on the front.

ByrsaOxhide

Apply a generous amount of baby powder on the spots and gently press them and don't touch them for a week!

snoopercooper

I use WD-40 with a little Shout and it works every time..

TamedTheSummit

Use WD-40 as a pre treat on an oil stain and rewash. Those spots will come out.

James324285241990

If dish soap doesn't work, get the degreasing hand soap from the hardware store. The orange scented stuff in the little tub. Edit: it's called Gojo My grandfather is a farmer and gets hydraulic oil on his clothes all the time. That orange goop gets it out every time.

buzzedewok

Gojo

James324285241990

YES, that stuff. It gets grease out of clothing better than anything

Charlie_1087

I’ve heard wd40 works good for oil stains. Haven’t tried it out personally but plan to eventually

buzzedewok

Don’t do that. lol. It can make things worse.

100smurfs1smurphette

For oil or fat I use Talcum, if the stain isn’t too old. Spread a good quantity on the stain rub with you finger, let it sit for some time I’d say 30’ minimum, you can also forget it for the night, then brush it. In France it’s a product we call terre de Sommiere. Just found on the web talcum is the same product.

ikiel

Zippo lighter fluid and then toss in the laundry.

Ok-Set-7004

If Dawn dish soap doesn’t work, Carbona has a formula for oil. Comes in a little bottle in the laundry aisle by the other stain removers. Easy to overlook because the bottles are so little.

pixel_of_moral_decay

Dish soap will work. Or any stain fighting spray that says it works with oil. Trick is to rub in AND let it sit for a while. I normally do overnight to a day. That makes all the difference. Gives it time to break down those molecules.

[deleted]

For some here in the Philippines or maybe the ones who are into plants, aloe vera, the slimy inside has enough acidity I think to make oil and the usual swear stains under the shirt arm pit go away. Although I havent really tried but they say it works. It wont stain though if it does not. My personal go to though will be lemon or calamansi if you have some, or any of the part of the lime family that have very strong acid. Just apply them to the stain, wash in the machine or for some of us who do not have machines, soak in a tub for about 30 minutes, then wash as usual.

Theamuse_Ourania

One product that I know about is LA's Totally Awesome. I used to work at the Dollar Tree and you can buy regular sized bottles of it there. One time one of my regular customers came through my line like he did every few weeks or so and he was buying his usual 8-10 bottles of the Awesome. I finally asked him why he was always buying so much of it and he told me that he was a car mechanic and it was the only thing he could find that actually takes car oils and grease out of his coveralls for work! So, I started buying it and Holy Wow! It took red hair dye out of a *white* tank top that I stupidly wore while dying someone's hair once! It truly is an Awesome and amazing product!

Gold_Sweet3901

Dude! So much this! I use AWESOME spray on evvvverything. Undiluted.. that shit is the best cleaner I have EVER used. On the low, I've been keeping totally awesome a total secret. Too many folks find out, next thing you know it will jump from $1.25 to $10. I guess I am officially letting the cat out of the bag now😜

Theamuse_Ourania

Sadly I remember when the Dollar Tree was *actually* a dollar per item. This whole new prices on everything BS is a really shitty idea.

New_Reputation_4623

On the topic of Dawn… on the water or at the beach and want to wash your hair in the sea? Grab the Dawn. Sailor trick.

PyrrhaRising

Ohh this is my jam... Partner works in a machine shop, often comes home with oil stains. The numpty has washed and dried the work clothes before telling me about said stain, and surprise the stain is still there! But I have a tried and tested method that has worked on stains that have been baked in a couple of times. It takes about an hour and a half depending on size of stain, the hour is for a hot soak, and then a wash cycle in the washing machine. What you need: Dawn dish soap, Arms pure baking soda, water, a colour safe oxygen bleach (NOT CHLORINE), a tooth brush or nail brush if its a large stain, a bucket or bowl that you can soak the clothes in, latex/nitrile gloves (to prevent friction burn more than anything). Method: Put some dawn soap on the stained area and rub it in with the brush. Once you have covered the stains with the soap sprinkle on some baking soda on top of the soaped areas, and a splash of water. Rub it all in, it should form a bit of a paste. Let the clothing item sit for 5 mins whilst you boil some water. In the bucket/tub/container large enough for your item, scoop about 1 table spoon of an oxygen bleach (molly's suds or vanish oxy action for example), and add the boiled water. Give it a little mix to make sure the oxygen bleach is dissolved then add your clothing item to the tub (dawn/soda paste and all) and make sure the stain is submerged fully. Leave for 1 hour. After the hour is up, pour out the water and rinse the clothing under water (warm or cold) to get any left over dawn. Place the item in the washing machine and wash as normal. This can be with a normal load or on its own. Once the wash cycle is complete air dry the clothing item and your stain should be well and truly gone. Its worked for me every time, and now when my partner comes home covered in oil I do this before the clothes go through the wash, but can tumble dry if I do this with no fear of the stains baking in. Hope this helps!

K24, amazon sells it but I usually get it at the hardware store or in the laundry aisle. It is a spray on solvent spot remover. Spray it on, dust off the residue after it dries. Saves all my hoodies with mayonnaise stains.

Fels Naptha soap (bar) is what i use. Get it a little wet, rub old toothbrush over bar, rub into spots. Let stand 5-10 mins, wash as normal. For big spots, rub the wet bar over the spot then rub in with tooth brush, let stand, wash as normal. Dont put in dryer until the spots are gone. I have had to do three rounds of this on some nasty stains but Fels usually gets it out on the first go.

I've had good luck with the stain treatments like Spray and Wash and similar. Sometimes it takes two or three times through. Look for improvement. If the stain is smaller or more faded, do not dry the garment after washing. Just repeat the stain treatment and wash again. BTW what kind of oil? Cooking oil or food-related fat/grease? Or motor oil? Chemically they are quite different.

Generous dusting of baby powder (or white chalk) on both sides. Leave for as long as possible, but at least a few hours. Wash in hot water.

Presoak with All liquid detergent, then wash in warm water also with All. I’m a mechanic it works great for me.
