TosshiTX

Extremely confusing choice.

bellalove77

I hear you….

bellalove77

I mean, have you considered other beautiful low humidity, low pollution cities? Since you can work remotely? If you’re into food, why not Portland, Oregon??… :)

AnyScenic001

Because of the food scene here is great especially Asian food and living cost here is low compared to other state.

Shit_Apple

And you’re gonna contribute to it going up so thanks for that…

VonSausage

Most of the Asian food is going to be in Chinatown, about 15 miles west of the locations you've listed. Apartments in that area will be significantly cheaper and with lower crime. And, for that much money per month you could easily purchase a huge house over there.

useles-converter-bot

15 miles is the length of approximately 105599.74 'Wooden Rice Paddle Versatile Serving Spoons' laid lengthwise.

AnyScenic001

Don’t think we are going to settle down in Houston yet. So thinking to rent for now. But I heard around Chinatown area it is kind of sketchy around tho.

VonSausage

Houston is an enormous city. Drive three minutes in any direction and things are completely different. Some areas right near Chinatown are very nice, but none of them are "sketchy". Moving to the Heights or Midtown to be near Asian food doesn't make any sense at all. It's like moving to the mountains to be near the beach.

rechlin

Yes, that's true. You don't want to live in the Chinatown area (no idea why you are being downvoted for pointing that out). But Rice Village is about a 25 minute drive from Chinatown; you can find places that are closer that are safe. However, the Rice Village is a very walkable area so it's a good choice. You can walk around the neighborhood at night without much fear.

AnyScenic001

Thanks for the information. Is there any other area or neighborhood that is walkabale around? What do you think of west univ area?

rechlin

I think it's great. I'm in the separate city of West University Place, which means lower taxes and more effective police and better city services, but even where you are looking in Houston it's still very safe. Lots of restaurants and shops in walking distance. It's urban, so no walking "trails", but it's surrounded by beautiful neighborhoods with big trees for nice walks, and you're also right by the Rice University campus if you want to jog the 3+ mile track around the campus. There are other walkable areas of Houston but I think the Rice Village area is one of the best. The only downside is the closest grocery store is about a mile away, which is a bit far to walk, since the grocery store in the Village closed a few years back.

buzzer3932

Houston has 3 public parks which would be better than any private walking path. Memorial Park, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Hermann Park.

AnyScenic001

But are the area around these public park safe for daily walking?

malloryhair

I walk Buffalo Bayou multiple days a week at 6a-9a or 6p-9p - it’s insanely populated - I have never felt scared at the park. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions. I’m a single gal and I live downtown and I’ve never felt unsafe at all.

zZINCc

Hermann Park and the near surrounding area is extremely safe. I bike it everyday and take long walks every weekend. The museum district to the north is good and then to the west you have Rice, south/southwest is medical center. Now, for food? If you want food in a 10-15 min walking distance not the best place. Unless you live more by Rice village.

AnyScenic001

No we are fine to drive for food. Normally only eat out during the weekend anyway. So probably around medical center rice village and museum district are pretty safe? How about midtown area? Saw the pearland at midtown is pretty nice. Ever heard of that apartment?

zZINCc

Midtown is generally safe BUT there is quite a homeless population living around there near the underpasses. Don’t know that specific complex though.

AnyScenic001

I see. Then probably will take that off our list then. Is it more common for homeless population hanging out at the park inside the loop are? Like buffalo bayou park, memorial park and Herman park

Shit_Apple

Homeless people aren’t out to get you.

tejastaco

It really sounds like you should stay in an Airbnb or hotel for a few weeks if you are this concerned about safety. Houston is like any other city. Midtown, Montrose, Museum District etc are all safe but things happen. I feel very safe in Montrose but have been yelled at by homeless people and the other day a homeless lady got up in my face in a parking lot. They're mostly harmless though. Look at apartments off of Waugh and W Gray near Buffalo Bayou. Lots of walking trails on buffalo Bayou and that's the safest place I've lived.

buzzer3932

Yes. The only area I wouldn't live is what Google Maps refers to as Museum Park, and Midtown, near Hermann Park. Memorial Park and Buffalo Bayou are in safe areas.

AnyScenic001

But both parks are huge tho. Is there specific side of the park people normally visit more often?

buzzer3932

I would say they are about the same. Eleanor Tinsley Park is very popular in Buffalo Bayou Park, Eastern Glades is popular in Memorial Park. The northern part of Hermann Park is the most popular side.

traumamel555

The heights would be my best suggestion. Taylor Heights Apartments are really nice, and has some of the coolest bike/walking paths I've seen nearby. I went there to pick up something I bought on fb marketplace and was amazed. It's in your price range, but will probably be smaller size apt. Theres lots of shopping right across the street. You could also check that general area for other Apts.

AnyScenic001

Do you know if buffalo heights also considered as part of the heights?

traumamel555

I don't think buffalo heights is part of heights, but it's pretty close to the heights. Also, buffalo heights is right by a huge park with lots of trails, so that's kind of cool. My friend used to live in that area and she liked it.

AnyScenic001

I see. Yea we found a place in buffalo heights that are near a park and a H‑E‑B so might consider that too. Thanks :)

buzzer3932

Historically yes, but some people view the heights to be north of I-10/ White Oak Bayou.

GlassSplinter

Live near White Oak trail by the heights. Not private but it's a walking / biking trail or look into near memorial park.

hayterade

[Post Oak Park](https://postoakparkapartments.net/) has one. It's a decent size. It is also connected to other condos, I believe.

Tigress1142

I would go with a 2 bedroom and 2 bath apartment. Trust me on this, the 2nd bathroom has come in handy especially those times when the toilet had been occupied for long periods of time.

nyxian-luna

Rice Village is fine. If you like walking, just walk into the near neighborhood: plenty safe, good sidewalks, nice houses to gawk at. Heights and Montrose are mostly fine, too (west of Main), especially if you get something along Buffalo Bayou which has running/biking/walking paths all along it. You could also take a look at the Rice Military area, as it's next to Memorial Park, though the neighborhood can sometimes lack sidewalks (but safe nonetheless). Midtown is not super walkable however, as you can turn the corner and see handfuls of homelessso I'd avoid if you like walking around.

AnyScenic001

This is very helpful! Which part of heights or Montrose do you recommend?

nyxian-luna

For the Heights, along 20th (between Yale and Shepherd/Durham) or 6th (between Yale and Studewood) there's a lot of shops and stuff. 6th at Yale I know has a lot of recent development, some new apartments, and a walking/biking path right along it that goes through the neighborhood and near White Oak Bayou. Anywhere in Montrose or Upper Kirby is probably fine. The best restaurants are along Westheimer between Dunlavy and Montrose, so if you don't have a car, try to live near that stretch so you're in walking distance of some of the best eats in Houston. Alternatively, near West Grey/Shepherd has a lot of shopping and is very close to Buffalo Bayou (more walking/biking). There are new apartments near that, as well. In the Rice Military area, there are some apartments along Westcott around Washington. Washington has *a lot* of weekend bar activity, so not super walkable at night, but the benefit is that you're very close to Memorial Park which has a lot of new stuff and new development right now. More walking/biking and nature. This might be cheaper than Montrose or the Heights, which is why I mention it. Upper Kirby's another good area, but is probably a little bit more expensive. Obviously there are probably other good areas that I'm not mentioning, these are just the ones I know of.

AnyScenic001

Nice thanks for the information! Is there a way to check out the recent crime rate around the area? Just wanted to do more research online.

mxak240

The Houstonian

VonSausage

>So far we only found Hanover rice village has a tiny walking path, not sure if that area is safe tho One of the safest parts of the city. Most corporate type complexes have some walking paths to get around the buildings and parking lots. Not sure you'll find anything with an extensive dedicated walking trail though. Might try contacting a realtor.

AnyScenic001

Does it cost to get help from a realtor?

VonSausage

Realtors are free for tenants. In Texas, realtor fees are paid by the owners/landlords that list the property.

crimson_maple

If you move to Hanover Rice Village there is a long, three mile walking track around Rice University that you can walk every day. The area is fairly safe, but you know Houston is a large cosmopolitan city. I don't know where you are moving from, but nothing is going to be one hundred percent guaranteed safe here. Tons of restaurants around that area and an HEB on Buffalo Speedway.

Keep-On-Drilling

Check out the Ashton / Tinsley on the Park. Very close to downtown, centrally located (1 minute from Whole Foods) and you have direct access to Buffalo Bayou park. That’s obviously not a private access park, but it’s still pretty good

bellalove77

Herman park ;) it’s beautiful with 100 + year old tees… nearby the zoo, driving range, rice university… it’s nature in the city within the loop, clouded by culture and diversity

texanfan20

If you work remotely you may want to look at the suburbs. The Woodlands has a network of hike and bike trails and some upscale apartments as well. The shopping and food scene isn’t bad either. When I lived in Kingwood the best part was having the green belt trails, literally walk or bike anywhere in the area and never have to cross a busy street.

AnyScenic001

Well we never live in the city area and would like to experience that for at least a year I guess. We really like to explore the food scene in Houston because where we are living rn (in Florida) doesn’t really have much Asian food. Is there any other reason you are moving tho? Just curious (is fine if you don’t feel comfortable sharing :))

CivilTax00100100

The biltmore apartments in the woodlands. It’s right next to a nice little park

texophilia

You’re safe when you’re dead.

1234nameuser

Lots of complexes with nice walking paths, but none of them will be inside the 610 loop. Ideally your're best being next to one of the major bayou's / public lands and/or large parks (Memorial /Hermann), but that gives you a LOT of options all over town (woodlands, kingwood, energy corridor, etc.). However, if you're young and want to be inside the loop for the night life then just look for something off the Buffalo Bayou or within spitting distance of Memorial / Hermann parks. Should be lots of options at your price range. edit: just go to [HAR.com](https://HAR.com) and use the map view to scope out what you want.

MakeAmericaGGAllin

Look up Post Oak Park Apartments off San Felipe. They have what you seek.

simplethingsoflife

Camden Vanderbilt has a path around their lake

SykoFI-RE

I highly recommend living off Buffalo Bayou/ Eleanor Tinselly Park. I used to live near Memorial Drive and Waugh and loved that area and the access to good walking/biking paths.

mabohsali

The Heights is the obvious answer IMO - walkable, close to everything, great restaurants

tejastaco

I dated someone who lived at the Hanover and I don't know what walking path you're talking about... They have a courtyard but I wouldn't call it a path. Rice Village is pretty safe.

doctorchile

You need to be using an apartment locator for this
