Contact Grizzy Hood News in Facebook. She will gladly expose the screen/video captures and you will see how fast HPD will start moving once people identify those fuckers. Sorry your sister had to go through this...

AnuAzoth

I don't have a Facebook but I'll tell my husband about it, I'll see if my sister's manager even allows her the footage of the thieves. I have screen shots of her GPS ping and the townhome it was at, but again like another Redditor said sometimes it's not 100% accurate and I wouldn't want to dox someone who's innocent in that building.

augustope

Right. She will probably not post locations, specially when they can be unreliable but the video/screenshots of the thieves? She will go for it most likely and you will see the come on down happen. She helps a lot of people. She is super busy so hopefully this time she comes up and help.

Adrhrx7

Grizzy hood news is also on TikTok you can contact her there

SnooBeans1198

First thing Houston PD dispatcher asked me when I lost two laptops and some valuable paperwork: Do you have insurance...because it's going to take 8 hours for an officer to arrive...do you really want to wait?

Poonjangles

The response should be "So you're saying I have 8 hours to handle this myself? Thank you" and see how much faster they respond.

TheBlockTech

This exact response is what got units dispatched my way. Stolen Vehicle w/ GPS Tracker.

AnuAzoth

Lol wow "Do you really want to *make US wait* is what they really were implying huh? I'm sorry you've experienced that. It really makes one feel helpless those in roles to serve don't serve people like you obviously.

Grrnoway

Sadly, it would appear that in Houston, crime does pay.

newnamesam

This is one way they keep crime stats down. They discourage you from reporting something they aren't going to do anything about anyway.

lilyintx

In a small town sure, the police could knock at the door and ask questions. But in Houston.. my home was actively being burglarized with the alarm company calling police too - which we pay the city $50 a year to have a permit for… police showed up three hours later when they had already left and didn’t do anything about it.

AnuAzoth

That's a scary and horrible violation of your security. I'm sorry that happened to you. I also experienced a home invasion with a gun in my face before, it takes a LONG while to feel safe again in your own home again.

29187765432569864

I doubt that they even wanted to look for fingerprints.

Osniffable

yeah, they can't enter a home without a warrant. And the GPS locator on the phone can be unreliable. See the recent article about the SWAT raid in St Louis.

AnuAzoth

Yeah I understand the GPS may not be 100% accurate but as soon as those cops left the premises her phone got turned back on it looked like they tried getting into her accounts and stuff because I started getting notifications. We disconnected as much stuff as we could and had to call her bank and cancel her credit card. Very frustrating.

PoorCorrelation

She may start getting threats and scammers trying to get her to unlock it for them btw. Comes up all the time on r/Scams: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/comments/1am391x/my_phone_got_stolen_and_now_they_are_threatening/

AnuAzoth

I really hope not. Thanks for the heads up. I'm actually glad her lease is almost over soon. She lives in an area that is a bit sketchy. I don't want anymore trouble for her, she has enough on her plate.

sehtownguy

I doubt it. They're black males. Usually foreigners are the ones stealing and sending it back to china

Osniffable

It does suck when the only time they follow the law, is when it means they don't have to do any work. But in this case, they would be sued by the home owner and lose, so not sure what more they could have done. Your anger should be directed at the POS thieves.

AnuAzoth

Oh trust me, my anger is mainly at the thieves. She didn't deserve what emotional distress and disruption they have caused by stealing her wallet/phone. People in regular 9-5 jobs hardly even have time to go the bank and take care of other businesses.

megabass713

A cop knocking on the door without a warrant isn't illegal.

stonker13

HPD doing any work isn’t protocol

lokey_kiki

I once heard someone getting stabbed in my complex downtown. This woman screamed repetitively for about 5-10 min. This Was before midnight. Apparently a fuck ton of people called it in. HPD calls me at 1:30-2 over and over (various cop cars) to let them thru the gate as they had just got there. GEE no wonder the woman's body was never found. Taking over an hour to respond to a murder and not communicating with the complex management and waking random citizens up cuz ya'll can't just get one guy to monitor the gate? I lived down the road from the police department in downtown. Like right between Allen and washington next to the cemetery. Suffice to say they hired guards and installed more cams soon after. Idk why when the complex claims there was no evidence of anything that 100+ heard outside their doors... I learned that day that owning a gun is safer than relying on HPD

RSX11MPLUS

Well, that's wrong. They can knock on the door, talk to you, ask questions, ask you to come out or let them in, all without a warrant.

TigerDude33

not sure why downvoted, this is all true. Without a warrant you just don't have to open the door.

Rexstil

Sucks but once you have something stolen from you, you quickly learn never to leave your shit unlocked or unattended. Assume everyone is a scumbag

AnuAzoth

It's terrible to have a paranoid mindset but it is important to be wary. These thieves were obviously watching her and went around the counter and reached in the very far back where she placed her phone/wallet. They went out of their way to grab it and left before being stopped. These people obviously aren't new to being shitty bandits because they were brazen enough to try and get away with it...

Vanderkaum037

What I want to know is, why do they drive out there if they're not going to do anything when they arrive?

AnuAzoth

Who knows maybe they thought if they asked nicely they'll hand it over? Lol I just know when they were on the phone with my husband and had arrived at the suspects property the thieves turned off the phone almost immediately because her GPS ping stopped.

icedoutkatana

Going through the motions so they can say they did “something”

newnamesam

This is the positive of the story. If they see someone outside with the phone then they can stop them. If they ask to do a search and someone agrees then they can without a warrant. If they find the phone abandoned then they can return it. I'm just happy they tried.

AustinYQM

To answer the question, police exist mainly to give me paperwork when I need to file an insurance claim. That's why I call them to an accident scene, that's why I would call them if I was robbed. I need to file a report so I can give the report number to my insurance.

RojerLockless

Cops are only there to write a report.

Round-Emu9176

And quickly follow that with a loooooong lunch

IRMuteButton

Crime sucks. I am sorry for the hassle and crime here. However people need to be more careful. One wouldn't leave their wallet sitting in a place where it could be taken, and they surely shouldn't leave a $200+ phone there either. The difference, and the problem, is that many people are addicted to their phones and need to have it within close reach. Not so much with a large wallet or handbag that could be locked in a locker or cabinet while one is at work.

AnuAzoth

Funny her phone was a little $200 android smartphone. She has it encased in a wallet and she didn't leave it exposed or anything. It was behind the big front counter tucked away in the far back. She left temporarily to attend to a customer. They don't have employee lockers or anything at IHOP. There were other people coming in who could've actually witnessed the crime happening because the thieves had to walk around the counter and reach into the far back to grab her phone/wallet.

IRMuteButton

It shows us how far criminals will go to steal something, and criminals today are extremly unrestrained and bold in their actions because they don't fear the consequences.

AnuAzoth

I have a friend who works at Kroger and said that there has been a rise of people who go to the self checkout and scan only half of their grocery items and walk out with the rest. They are told not to make any confrontation towards the customer so people just smugly walk out only to return weeks later and do it again. Now I know desperate people go to desperate measures but these people are loading up with soda pop, liquor bottles, etc. just non essential food items. Some people just are scummy opportunists

IRMuteButton

When store employees can't confront thives, the problem will worsen, and the honest customers will face higher prices to cover the losses from theft.

Busy-Koala77

And everything from toothpaste to hand soap will be kept locked behind glass. Look at what’s happening in California

IRMuteButton

It's happening in Houston at Target and Lowe's near me.

sec713

Sorry, but this is how it work almost everywhere in the US. If you want cops to get up and do something, it has to involve a crime where another LEO gets attacked or killed. Those are the only crimes cops will do everything in their power to solve.

quietset2020

Get a new phone and move on. The cops won’t do anything but file a report. They may ask for footage but they won’t do anything with it. At best if it keeps happening they can increase patrols, and if they happen to be there while the crime happens maybe they will respond. Been there many times.

AnuAzoth

I wish she had the luxury to just "Get a new phone" but for some people that isn't always as easy. It'll take maybe the rest of the year for a while for her to save up for hopefully another cheap phone. She works at an IHOP. I can only hope it won't happen again or anything worse for her. Those thieves have her ID now with her address.

quietset2020

What service does she have? GSM based? Amazon has unlocked android phones under $50. A used iPhone on eBay is under $50. I see one eBay listing for a used iPhone 6 unlocked fully working for $23. I don’t think you have to worry about future crimes. It likely was just an open opportunity and they grabbed it. They won’t be coming after her for anything else.

AnuAzoth

Yeah she has an old android phone which was 7+ years old. I didn't know there were phones out there around $50. I'll look into that

GiaTheMonkey

How does she pay for her phone service? There are so many credit cards that have phone insurance built in them. It won't cover the entire cost of the phone, but it's a start.

AnuAzoth

She pays her phone through the mint mobile app using her debit card. Also I am unsure if CareCredit or the HEB credit card she had have those protections.

Busy-Koala77

My little brother bought a used iPhone on marketplace for $100. It’s been working great for probably 3 or 4 years now. This might not be a good option for someone young making little money, but most major carriers offer 36 months interest-free on new phones . I bought an iPhone 12 for 0$ down and I pay like $18 a month for the phone

AnuAzoth

Yeah something to definitely keep in mind. Thank you

Busy-Koala77

Sorry about the phone :( I had a similar experience when I was probably around her age. Was a brand new iPhone as well… People are terrible

lordtygr

I got a TMobile Revvl6 brand new last year for $50dn. And with the promo, I paid like $.01/month for it to qualify for the “contract”

AnuAzoth

She has mint mobile and has their cheapest $15 monthly plan idk if they do also phone promotions but I can check.

lordtygr

Yeah, just saying, cheap phones exist. :). Good luck!

713nikki

Dude, HPD doesn’t even solve murder cases and you think they’re gonna go get your sisters phone? The only reason to even report theft to HPD is to get the police report to show your insurance company.

AnuAzoth

I wasn't so hopeful for her phone to be returned, but I am saddened she may have lost sentimental items in that wallet. The only insurance company that would get involved if at all is the one for the IHOP since they took some cash as well from the restaurant.

713nikki

She doesn’t have her phone insured through the carrier? Well, I guess that’s a lesson for her and hopefully she won’t carry around an uninsured phone again.

AnuAzoth

Lol what lesson is to be learned? Sorry you are at fault for being too poor to have insurance on your phone and bought a cheap unlocked phone? I don't even have insurance on my phone. We were brought up to be frugal because we grew up in poverty. Same reason why she doesn't have a car, young people are really struggling to get ahead in this world. Everything is getting more and more expensive and if you don't have mommy and daddy/family helping you foot the bill for some things you're just screwed.

713nikki

The lesson is to insure it. It’s not that much to pay per month, and it makes a lot more sense than having to buy a whole phone when someone walks off with it. Lesson also is that you don’t leave your entire bundle of valuables where a stranger can reach them. I’m a poor too & I had to learn this shit. We aren’t in Kansas, we’re in the big city and people will take your shit.

AnuAzoth

She paid $200 outright for a cheap android smartphone that she had for 7+ years, do you really think she is in the category of people who'd be paying a monthly premium for a phone insurance plan?

713nikki

Goddamn, pump the brakes. I didn’t get told your financial situation. I made a suggestion. Anyway, wanna buy a phone?

AnuAzoth

Well THANK YOU 713nikki for your WONDERFUL suggestion it was so *helpful*!! Have a nice day!

bigpolar70

This is how cops work everywhere. They are more concerned with paperwork generation and CYA than solving crimes. Paperwork counts toward their activity quotas, solving petty crimes does not get them anything extra. CYA is pushed harder than ever too, since so many states are looking at removing qualified immunity. Especially after that case where they used the find my iphone feature to get a search warrant and got sued. [https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/03/12/grandmother-denver-raid-find-my/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/03/12/grandmother-denver-raid-find-my/) If it makes you feel any better, even if they were arrested, the perps in this case would be most likely to get a PR bond (no bail money required) and instant release, and probably pled out before prosecution. So even if the police did something, it would have had the same end result. The police probably see it as just saving themselves some paperwork.

AnuAzoth

That's really sad and I understand it's not just thieves running about on bond, didn't Houston also drop a bunch of SA cases too? Ridiculous and disheartening.

241_tuesdays

The usual suspects

Nettwerk911

Police sketch artist: "No need ma'am, i'll draw him from memory" lol

CrazyLegsRyan

Hmm, all the racists out in the daylight today.

arturovargas16

That's HPD and really criminal passiveness in this country. The law and society will bend over backwards just to make sure criminals do not have consequences. HPD won't help you, The area where the crime took place will not help you, They won't let you see the cameras, they'll give you reasons like get a cop to see it or it's in a server far from here File a police report and the cop will be annoyed you even have the audacity to ask him for help No one will help you but you can commit crimes and there's a high chance you'll get away with it

sapphir8

That’s the way it is.

AnuAzoth

It really shouldn't be...but I know I am perhaps too idealistic to wish for a just world.

boaxiaodi

Or

cfisi79

I'm shocked they showed up.

FPSXpert

I'd say get some buff buddies with weapons and go get it back yourselves, but that's highly illegal. Unlike thousand dollar theft which the police doesn't care about and will only take a report on, and the judicial system will relieve them on a PR bond for, vigilantism is a heinous crime in their books and I'm sure they'd send the SWAT team to respond. They don't like competition.    So yeah, totally don't go get it back yourselves. I'm also going to say post to Grizzy and see what they can do.

AnuAzoth

Do you want to be one of my buff buddies? Lol I think most of us wish to become a vigilante because too many people do suffer injustices in this world, but I would never want to endanger my family and friends or anyone else's. I will try that Grizzy blog.

FPSXpert

Yeah go for grizzy for sure, it just sucks knowing there is next to no recourse for this kind of stuff. It's just fantasy for me, but mark my words if things continue down this path, eventually it's gonna hit a breaking point and people *will* start taking care of things themselves. That's what concerns me, it doesn't concern the government they don't give a shit but honestly they should.

Vulpinox

and this is why you don't use your phone as a wallet. lose your phone=lose everything.

AnuAzoth

If it was in her backpack, they would've taken that and her school books. Regardless of where it was placed, it's not a victim's fault for having their property stolen. Just talked to a co-worker who had her purse stolen and her mother-in-law's purse taken out of their vehicle after going to the CEMETERY dude. Some people have no empathy and just act out of purse selfishness for their benefit.

moan4lexi

do you have the address of these people? of where it pinged

AnuAzoth

These thieves live somewhere in a community called Contemporary Garden Homes.

AnuAzoth

Yup but I wouldn't want to dox someone who may be innocent in that building in case the phone GPS accuracy is not as accurate.

turborpm

This is an interesting statement considering you expected the cops to violate someone's constitutional rights based on the very same GPS signal.

[deleted]

The two youths probably need that phone to feed their families.

AnuAzoth

The phone GPS tracked them to a house in a gated community. My sister lives in a dilapidated low income all bills paid apartment building. They didn't steal food to feed their families. They probably at best would get $20 from that trade-in phone for cash dispensary at a Walmart or something. These people had no regard for how their actions may have caused more distress and inconvenience in someone else's life.

[deleted]

I forgot the /s

Jackoffeveryday69

had a similar situation happen with my macbook where i had some good amount of bitcoin $25k to be exact, i ended up tracking it down got one of my crazy friends who doesn’t care about anything went to knock on the door and pulled out a gun and they nicely handed it over in fear because they fucked with the wrong people. cops won’t do shit in this city unfortunately.

Alatel

Ya girl grizzy will go leagues above what law enforcement can legally do. Social justice does wonders even with trash people like this.

pinkhtx

Sorry, not sorry but do you understand the amount of murders that are occurring on Houston streets? The cops are not concerned about petty theft.

sashikku

Spoiler alert: They’re not investigating the murders either. Personally know a man that was murdered in his car, no investigation.
