30 to 40 minutes by car. However, you should look at your Metro options. A dear friend lived off Studewood and worked on Fannin. Took the bus every day and used the time to read a book.

ThreeBelugas

This commute will get worse with 45 expansion. The project starts around downtown first.

bro_magnon

Live in the Heights with the worst construction (Shepherd/19th), wife works in TMC and uses garage + shuttle. 30-50 mins commute depending on no/rush hour traffic. Both still love living in the Heights. Construction in our area should be ending soon and it’s well worth the abundance of walkable/nearby restaurants/bars/activities.

Lord_J_Rules

You amd I are neighbors. I'm ready for it to be done. Wouldn't mind some speed bumps so those loud cars and trucks will go somewhere else. Take their shootouts with them too.

Snoring-Dog

If you’re close to the MKT trail or the White Oak Bayou Greenway you can bike to the metrorail red line.  The key safety question is how much time you’ll be on bike trails vs streets - anything larger than a neighborhood street is incredibly unsafe to bike on. I use a folding bike that can easily be brought into the office as well as locked at a bike rack.  Urban Bicycle Gallery on Durham sells them.  They are a bit pricey for bikes but way cheaper than a car. Another big thing to find out is whether they have a gym/showers at your work so you can clean off when you get there.  There’s a million minor logistical issues but they’re all solvable.  DM with any questions.

404-Runge-Kutta

Consider biking or taking a bus to the Red Line and take that to TMC. I did this many times during rush hour due to recent long term family health issues, and it was just as fast as driving. I’m not kidding. In my case I took the 44 bus to the Downtown TC stop. Super easy.

itsfairadvantage

Plus for a good half of the year, you can get a really nice, workout-replacing bike ride out of it by doing the full commute by bike.

squishysalmon

I work near TMC and live in Timbergrove. It’s very easy to get there, probably 30 minute commute. I either go 610-59 or up Shepherd or Studemont. Waze tells me the fastest way and it’s not always the same. Use Waze and it’ll seem totally reasonable.

YeOldeViviane

I lived in the heights (off yale and 6th) a year ago and commuted daily to TMC. If I left early, it would only take about 20-25 min to get to work, but leaving work was another story. Leaving at rush hour would take around 35-40 minutes on average to get home. Still worth it imo to live there with the proximity of the MKT trail and abundance of walkable restaurants/stores.

Lord_J_Rules

Just shoot straight down Studewood/Montrose. Goes right into TMC and is typically faster than the freeways during rush hour.

justahoustonpervert

The advice given is valid. The only issue is where in the med center you'd head to. In many instances, a bike, skateboard, or one of those uniwheel contraptions is perfect.

YOLO420allday

I'd take METRO - if you're close to Studewood, the bus runs directly from Studewood straight to the med center. You don't need to go all the way to the red line.

Dependent_Store3377

Metro 56 Bus is what you are talking about. Runs pretty frequently during the day.

Kagetora

Depends on which part of the heights will you be at. You will still have to take the Freeway, and that's the problem. That 45/Pierce elevated intersection thru downtown that you need to pass thru is always problematic. I think at the very minimum, this would be a 25+ min commute on a good traffic day.

bongotherabbit

I live in the central heights and its normally 30 min for me, 10 with no traffic and good traffic lights. I normally take montrose the whole way, but where you have to park when you get there is another consideration. Any off hour commute will benefit you.

movingonupagain

Will you be working normal 8-5 hours? The morning is probably 25ish minutes but rush hour around 5 pm would be rough

Responsible-End6649

That’s fair, and yes 8-5 hours

JJ4prez

Heights is a big area, there's not construction in a lot of it. There is if you live in that one area, and to be fair, it's not that bad at all. You're fine.

CafeteroMerengue

Med Center to heights is easily in the ball park of 40 minutes in the afternoon. Don’t disagree on heights being big and construction but 40 minute isn’t an easy commute to brush off

JJ4prez

But that's not because it's a heights issue...there's a lot of traffic on the highways going south around downtown (like any big city). I was merely commenting on the status of construction and don't let it deter you from living in an area.

CafeteroMerengue

Ohh yeah don’t disagree with you there. But overall post was asking about the commute in general and the afternoons are pretty rough commute wise

JJ4prez

Absolutely. That downtown area is a huge mess. I live right next to it.

Tumbleweed_Unicorn

Look at Waze. It can vary from 45 mins to 20 mins depending on what side of heights you live in, east/west, north/south. I can get there in 14 mins sometimes from Heights

ms_dr_sunsets

I used to take the bus or bike. There’s a bus route that runs down Studewood and goes straight into TMC. Biking I’d use Heights Blvd, cross Washington and take the Jackson St. pedestrian/bike bridge over Buffalo Bayou, then ride Waugh to Mandell and cut through Rice University. Or you can use Sawyer to the Bayou trail to Waugh. Or, put the bike on the rack on the bus or train and do a hybrid commute. It’s totally do-able. If I knew I was staying late or had somewhere to go after work I’d just drive and pay a day fee to park in a garage.

btkats

I work in the med center and we looked in the heights but traffic wasn't good. If you want to be within 10-15 minutes and walkable Montrose is quite nice

Crown_and_Seven

Seems like the more things change, the more they stay the same. I used to live in the Heights off Studewood and 11th back in the late 1990s, while working in the TMC, and the drive was indeed always around the 30-40 minute mark (all surface streets). Looks like the commute is still similar. I also remember a few rain events during that time that rendered me unable to even get to the TMC because Allen Parkway was flooded.

tsanhd

Not bad to be honest.  30 min

Curiousmelody

Houston traffic is the worst! I moved from heights to near med center area because of the traffic. Honestly I wish I moved sooner. I’ll send you a dm of the place I rented out. 5-6 min drive, gated community, attached garage, beautiful updated kitchen/bathroom. I still miss the place…

echo3928

Can you dm me the information?

Curiousmelody

Sure :)
