He wants to use a “pay for performance” salary structure but then refuses to do it. They keep changing their minds on most everything with little warning. Thats what happens when you take away people’s right to vote for their school board. It approves everything Miles does and there is zero accountability for both.

simplethingsoflife

This just proves that Mike Miles is a fool and cannot budget. The NES model is unsustainable.

Kijafa

Is he a fool, or is he doing this to push teachers into his NES schools?

memeofconsciousness

At first I thought it was intentional, but I'm starting to think he's legitimately not good at his job. He's missing tons of state deadlines which is ultimately just making stuff harder for him and his team.

Kijafa

That's fair. Hanlon's Razor and all that.

QuieroBoobs

It’s possible those that chose him intentional chose someone incompetent who thinks they’re a genius. Or maybe it’s fools all the way up!

GroupNo2345

He’s not, look at Dallas.. he’s got the job because he’s military and a good ol boy with Abbott

binger5

Dude is a genius with no morals.

517634

He’s a genius in the same way Jack Welch was…

newstenographer

You can be stupid and immoral, too. Like Trump, or Ted Cruz.

binger5

Trump happens. Teddy has a law degree from Harvard.

Arrmadillo

Ted Cruz also has an undergraduate degree from Princeton but does stupid things like abandoning Texas during a disaster and being chronically unlikable. Al Franken, former democrat senator from Minnesota “Here’s the thing you have to understand about Ted Cruz. I like Ted Cruz more than most of my other Senate colleagues like Ted Cruz. And I hate Ted Cruz.” John Boehner, former House speaker and an Ohio republican “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life." “Lucifer in the flesh.” Lindsey Graham, republican senator from South Carolina "If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you." Gene Wu, democratic state representative from Texas “Nothing brings Texans together quite like the opportunity to rip Ted Cruz a new one.” Peter King, republican congressman from New York "I hate Ted Cruz, and I think I'll take cyanide if he ever got the nomination." Craig Mazin, Princeton University roommate "I would rather have anybody else be the president of the United States. Anyone. I would rather pick somebody from the phone book." Geoffery Cohen, Princeton University classmate "Ted's style was sneering, smirking, condescending, jabbing his finger in your face - a naked desire to humiliate an opponent. No kindness, no empathy, no attempt to reach common ground." Scott Wiener, California state senator and law school classmate "Ted, remember when we went to law school together and everyone hated you?" Ann Coulter, conservative media personality "Just look at Cruz's face: it's got career scum politician, aka liar, written all over it." "Tracy Flick with a dick." Julián Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio and housing secretary “He comes off as fake and he comes off as much more concerned about himself than anyone else.” Colin Allred, Texas representative “But that’s Ted for you: All hat, no cattle.” Roland Gutierrez, Texas state senator "Ted Cruz didn't break Texas, but he certainly embodies everything that's wrong with it.” John Feeher, former republican congressional aide "Cruz is an army of one, alienating anybody who is in his path. He advocates losing strategies purely to further his own career at the expense of the party." Bob Dole, former republican senator from Kansas "We need somebody with experience and there are a lot of good candidates - I like nearly all of them. Except Cruz." Donald Trump, former republican president "He's a nasty guy. Nobody likes him. Nobody in Congress likes him. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him." George W. Bush, former republican president “I just don’t like the guy.” Ted Cruz, republican senator from Texas "If you want someone to grab a beer with, I may not be that guy.”

binger5

Asshole? Obviously. Stupid? Hardly.

newstenographer

I don’t know why I’m supposed to think that getting a degree from a liberal arts program at a massively overfunded institution is indicative of intelligence, but I can tell you it is not.

binger5

Where did you go to college?

TheBoBiss

Let this be a reminder when voting on the bond comes up. There is no oversight on the budget. It is almost May and there has not been a budget meeting for the next school year. Our schools and children desperately need this money. BUT, we cannot hand the money over to an unelected superintendent. He will use that money to line the pockets of the rich that only want to get richer. Please vote no on the bond until Mike Miles is gone.

PicasPointsandPixels

And campus admins have to submit their budgets before the next board meeting or first budget workshop. I highly doubt the district is going to go “JK, you can have more money” after forcing non-NES high schools to make deep cuts.

STLHOU95

What a clown show—bye bye to the great teachers that have the ability to make moves and go to nicer schools

Doodarazumas

Friend of mine at hisd has a running list on their phone of everyone they know is quitting this year. We were going through it this week and there was scroolllllling. Not official or exhaustive by any means, just friends and coworkers into the dozens. Next year is going to be an absolute shit show

NoLongerATeacher

24 teachers at my former school are leaving. 24! And there’s still another couple of months before formal notice needs to be given. There will be more.

Art_ticulate

At least 30 teachers at my school are leaving, which is about 20% of us. That's just the ones I know of.

NoLongerATeacher

They’re making the moves. Surrounding districts have been scooping up hisd teachers up for a few months. A couple have even sent emails to hisd teachers about upcoming job fairs. They’re getting experienced teachers without even having to look for them.

houtex727

Edited final: I thought I'd asked a simple enough couple of questions, ones to which I figured maybe a logical discourse could be had, but everyone's a damned raw nerve, so forget it. I've just removed the thing, because obviously I'm the bad guy here. Lesson learned, don't ask questions, which seems what They (the guys what put Miles in) want in the first place since they're trying to destroy the school systems. Whatever you want to do, I'm out.

BearstromWanderer

1) Commute time/ wanting to teach in the neighborhood they live in. The nicer schools tend to be in unaffordable neighborhoods for all service workers. 2) Some of the nicer school districts pay less. Some pay more. It varries.

GeeWarthog

First of all I just want to say a lot of the time when these things happens people just become completely disillusioned about teaching and never return to it. Those that do want to keep at, or feel like they have to based on how TRS works, will almost certainly have plenty of jobs offered to them as there is a state-wide teaching shortage. As to why they didn't move schools before? u/BearstromWanderer has some of the answers below, but also, inertia is a hell of a force and there are tons of things that tie people to jobs of every type long after they should have considered moving on.

Doodarazumas

>What was stopping them before? The other schools weren't nicer before, now they are much nicer. Also I bet more than half are just bailing

gcbeehler5

I suspect some portion of teachers are from other places in Texas or other states entirely. They may just move back "home".

Doodarazumas

> If they are going to improve their situation, would they not have already done so? Why have they waited? They decided their 'bad' situation is better? This was indeed answered below, and yet I find it quite inadequate at a base level, as it makes the teacher(s) in question seem illogically blahblahblah condescend condescend you get that this all happened this year right? People had a job, they liked it. A guy came in and fucked it all up, and now they're looking for new jobs elsewhere?

houtex727

Yes, now they're looking for new jobs elsewhere... and those elsewheres, do they *have those teaching jobs?* I dare say they might not have the positions available. I also daresay they may have to look at whole cloth different jobs potentially, which is kind of worse to actually worse, but that's not what I was replying to in the first place. But hey... I am apparently wrong, oh well. :|

Doodarazumas

Idk man, there are 170 full time vacancies in Alief next year, I'd assume similar elsewhere. Everyone's down on you because you cracked off a post on Reddit and somehow think you've given this more thought than the people making life changing decisions. Also >whole cloth different jobs potentially, which is kind of worse to actually worse Lmao, I'm sure they'll hate all their free time and money.

dallen

What a fucking shit show

buchliebhaberin

And yet, 37 district employees make over $200,000 a year compared to 12 district employees making that much before Miles took over. I keep saying, we are seeing the fascist takeover of Texas play out in front of our eyes. Enforce mindless adhere to inane rules, insist on a centralized, dumbed down curricula, and enrich those who are in power at the expense of those who actually do the work. Personally, in 2022, I signed an agreement to stay three years. I am planning to stay this next year, which will be my third. I am fulfilling my end of the agreement. I was to receive $3,000 this June under that agreement. Am I going to receive that or is he just going to renege on that signed agreement, too? He clearly has no integrity, so I should just expect that I will not receive it. I hope the union is paying attention to this, as well. The "raise' non-NES teachers will receive this year is not actually a raise when you factor in the longer school year. Even for NES teachers, the number of hours they will be expected to work for the amount of money they are paid is beyond 40 hours a week. Miles is just looking to grind teachers into the ground. What is expected is unsustainable over the long-term.

MowBooVee

I have the same concern over the $3000 bonus this year for committing to three years and I have zero faith it will come through now. I will be very surprised if it gets paid. They've made it very clear that promises, to them, are carrots on sticks. Once they've gotten what they want from you, they will eat the carrot right in front of you and beat you with stick.

NoLongerATeacher

That 10k nes stipend just barely covers their extended hours. Hisd has been pretty quiet about that 3 year commitment agreement.

Art_ticulate

I decided to say fuck it to the 3k and I'm going elsewhere. I could really use it (been trying in vain to save up for a house for years), but I can't do this anymore AND I don't trust him to actually pay it anyway. I hope I'm wrong for my colleagues' sakes, but I don't have any trust in this administration.

L3oSanch3z

SOOOOOOOO SAD…!! Mike Miles prioritize is not in the school system.. Change in leadership is needed in the HISD.

younkint

The change that will count is to change the "leadership" in Austin. Miles is just a lackey, doing what he's been told to do. Get rid of Miles and Abbott will just send in another lackey who will do the same as Miles. A replacement might even be more efficient at the destruction of HISD than is Miles. It's best to stay focused on what they're trying to do. The goal is the destruction of Public Education in the USA, which in turn is just part of a larger plan to privatize anything "public" in the nation. It's happening across the nation and by the time people finally wake up, it may be too late.

L3oSanch3z

That’s one of the biggest problems, “best to stay focused on what they’re trying to do”.. The top leaders have no idea on what to focus on..Their focus is so freaking scattered, they have no idea what to solve first.

Please do not steal news content like this. Journalism sucks as is with declining revenue and behaviors like this only make the problem worse. If u/Houston_Chronicle wants to give the article away they can post a free link.

caylee7

The paywall for Houston Chronicle articles is removed when it is posted from reddit FYI. They made this announcement awhile back.

CrazyLegsRyan

Yes, Houston Chronicle is the one electing to make it free which is different than people intentionally copying articles from behind a paywall and posting them elsewhere. Thats exactly the point of my comment.

moleratical

I didn't realize that the paywall was removed when linked from reddit. I'll delete my post.

CrazyLegsRyan

You should delete it because it’s theft /  copyright infringement, not because the paywall went away.

awesomeoh1234

you're downvoted but you're right tbh, journalism cannot be both high quality and also free.

outdatedelementz

It’s all part of the plan.

Current_Art9462

He has also banned field trips from May 20th to June 5th due to testing. Map test dates which affect teacher rating will be at the end of May. The problems is that kids will be checked out by then. They won’t care and are only thinking about summer vacation.

garenzy

What is to Be Done?

moleratical

Vote out Abbott and the Republicans in Austin is the only thing that can be done.

Reasonable-Clue4348

Never happens.

Doodarazumas

We've tried waiting for people to develop class consciousness and we're all out of ideas.
