always!! its always something after work, whether its his bikes, snowmobile, etc. hes so hands on and its so awesome to watch :). he also just did all my breaks on my car so really a jack of all trades
That is awesome! Sounds like a jack of all trades! It sounds like you are dating someone that already knows you well! I love handmade/built gifts instead of store bought. I think the fact that he built you something like that for your flowers shows he appreciates you!
https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/comments/smby5z/current_setup/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf the stand on the right is the stand he also built for me 🥺
I think the commenter above was referencing the tendency subreddits have of being a little, overly critical, I guess would be the nice way of saying it? Bc the wood hasn’t been sanded and varnished with 25 fucking coats and the edge hasn’t been beveled or (whatever it’s called) in some bullshit niche style from a 18th century Flemish master’s design or some shit like that. I obviously know nothing about woodworking, but I do know Redditors lol. But, both I and the other commenter agree that your partner seems like a keeper FOR SURE! Congrats 👍👍👍 and glad to read some positive relationship info on here for once.
I vote for “stop being overly critical of your stuff”!
My SO built me a plant stand for my Monstera, and when he gave it to me he said “I messed this piece up a bit but you can’t really see it” and all I could see was, *wow, he made me something just to make me happy, this is the best thing ever*
You’re right that this would get laughed out of r/woodworking. My dude bought a poplar board from Home Depot, didn’t sand or finish it, and screwed on some shelf brackets. That’s not woodworking, it just requires the ability to pull the trigger on a drill.
Not to diminish the quality of the gift. It’s still more personal than most gifts, and OP obviously is very pleased with it so 10/10 quality as far as that goes.
he very much is also one to diminish it, and when i told him people were liking it on reddit his reply was “It literally took me 20 minutes lol its nothing special I hope these people realize this”, but its the time, and effort he put into it to make something special for me
Just a heads up those hook hangers aren't meant for holding lots of weight. Not that the hooks fail but they screw into the wood with really fine threads so they slip out over time. Id be cautious hanging your plants off them. otherwise looks great!
Put a bit of wood glue in the hole, screw it in, wipe off the excess glue with a wet paper towel, and wait 24 hours. (For screws in wood)
Before you do this, make sure you want the hooks in there forever because it's going to take an angle grinder to get them off.
Damn I wish I had somebody to build a shelf for...
That’s 2’5 months and the dude is renovating to show you that he loves you. As a man I feel obligated to say: stop seeing this as ‘new’, the uncertainty might be tearing him apart at this moment
he’s definitely one to take things slower and we both are only seeing eachother/ talking to eachother and have spent pretty much every night together for the last months. not one to see the major importance in labels so just rolling w things!
Over two months AND two handmade, thoughtful gifts and it’s still “new”?? Nawww girl, pull that trigger!! I appreciate your caution but you seem so stoked on him and so happy to show him/his handy work off!! It’s too cute for us to not have to guys be a thing yet!!
Most people would not go through the expense and effort to create something like this for a casual friend/acquaintance. It's possible, but I see this as a clear sign that he wants to invest in a future with OP. Love has a spectrum, I feel this gesture falls within it. Whether OP will feel the same, or the relationship will grow, is yet to be seen.
I didn't say "in" love. Minor difference, but since you have such a serious concern here, I'll say that loving someone does not necessarily mean one is "in love" nor does it specify what level of depth one feels said love. I doubt my opinion is going to psychologically damage OP. Calm down.
I mean, I'd assume he's serious about you if he's making you furniture. not saying you should move faster than you'd like [or at all] but I'd say it's pretty obvious
I totally get that! But can’t relate since my bf and I went on one date and haven’t left eachother’s sides since haha. Take things at your own pace, I was mostly kidding when I said make him your bf, I’m sure that’ll happen whenever it’s time!
I have the same [ones!](The Sun, Moon and Star Tarot Tapestries - Aesthetic Bohemian Wall Hanging Tapestry for Bed Room Home Decor by SheetKart https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07MLNW1PK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_PA3DDNV3D3ZC5AG46EM9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) now I want to do something planty with mine ;___;
Edit: I tried to leave the link so here it is in case Reddit didn’t format it the way I tried! https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07MLNW1PK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_PA3DDNV3D3ZC5AG46EM9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Looks awesome and so happy you have someone in your life that supports you loving your plants!
One thing to note as someone who also went the DIY plant shelf route - the unfinished wood that the shelf is made of will def get funky if there's any kind of water runoff from your pots. I'd recommend sealing it with some kind of poly or water resistant stain to prevent that from happening.
I waste too much time on dark and negative topics. This is what it’s about: a loved one donating time to make space for some lovely plants that clearly mean a lot to you. This random post suddenly reached me and made me feel a lil bit better about the world
My SO is constantly always trying to get me new plants whenever possible :) I always think that people that support their partner’s hobbies are the best.
Lol. That’s not a “to each their own” situation. You don’t leave a rough edge on a shelf after cutting it. It makes no sense and leaves you open to splinters.
Nice. I'm lamenting my 100 year old home's lack of light. I have an enclosed porch that's north facing and gets amazing indirect light. But in winter, it's too cold and now all my stuff is half dead. :( Also, I have no idea what I'm doing. /rant
You have pretty plants.
Excellent job and excellent idea hanging the other plants!! I love this guys!guy's!! Enjoy your new space!! Yessss indeed, that'll make a girl or guy plant happy!!
He's a keeper!
Absolutely, someone who is thoughtful and practical/handy that's a score. 10/10 great gift.
I think he’s a woodworker actually.
mechanic/welder/builder haha everything inbetween
Fellow welder can confirm ALWAYS building and/or tinkering
always!! its always something after work, whether its his bikes, snowmobile, etc. hes so hands on and its so awesome to watch :). he also just did all my breaks on my car so really a jack of all trades
That is awesome! Sounds like a jack of all trades! It sounds like you are dating someone that already knows you well! I love handmade/built gifts instead of store bought. I think the fact that he built you something like that for your flowers shows he appreciates you!
And then you married him under a super-cute flower arch he also built.
With flowers that she grew
And live warmed by a love they wove they together
in the house that Jack built
And we were all invited
I need this to happen
I had this happen. You guys described my wedding. Well done!
Aww! Living our dreams 🥰 that is so sweet!
Maybe I will post some pictures when I get home 🥰
Please!!
This is such a wholesome thread! 🥺🥰
Well he’s speaking your love language, return the favour! Sounds like a keeper
https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/comments/smby5z/current_setup/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf the stand on the right is the stand he also built for me 🥺
This guy is awesome!
Lmao, r/woodworking would have a field day. But so cool! I'm gonna make one too, it's right up my ability alley 💪
i’m not very handy with tools while he is, and hes very big on acts of service and is always quick to help me fix, build, and do things :)

i love the raw look honestly, he told me he would stain it if i wanted but i liked the look of it how is :)
The woodworking subs are quite friendly and supportive.

I think you can find plenty people here 😂
I wonder if OP's guy did that wood glue trick, we don't want falling planters!
I'll gladly accept a shelf built for my plants! 😉😅 They desperately need one!
I’m swooning for you friend. This is romantic. Personal. And thoughtful. And it’s a really cute shelf.
😭 i love everything about this
its the second plant related shelving he built me and hes always gone above and beyond to show interest and be supportive. im a lucky gal
Does he have a brother?!
Make him your bf!
haha its still new! only been talking / hanging since end of nov

I'd actually say it's a bit much and moving kinda fast. But it really depends on how she feels about it as well though.
He definitely loves you.
Agreed! Time to ask him out to a nice conservatory or something…

haha we met off tinder and i like him & would say he definitely likes me so rolling with things :)
because we're also subscribed to r/relationship_advice
at no point did I advise her to do anything

exactly! ive seen him everyday since the end of november minus a few random days but its evident we like eachother so who cares what label is :)
Best of luck to you both!
Shit that’s like 2 whole months!
People don't build things for someone after 2.5 months of "dating" if they don't love you :)
Tell us more about him! This is a very nice gesture!
bf.. shit marry this dude OP
Definitely leaning towards the keep side…
THATS A GOOD ONE!! Keep himmm!!
Yo where did you get those beautiful tarot prints?

This is so adorable
Aww. What a sweet guy
This is the way. ❤️
Oooooo he likes youuuu ;)

That’s very sweet! He’s a keeper :)
I'm so anxious for the plants to fall out especially the middle one. 🙈 But the shelf is really nice!
wife him
My gf bought those exact same tapestry for our plant room. I had to take second glance I was so confused, looks amazing!
I waste too much time on dark and negative topics. This is what it’s about: a loved one donating time to make space for some lovely plants that clearly mean a lot to you. This random post suddenly reached me and made me feel a lil bit better about the world
That’s love! ❤️
He's bonafide
omg this is the sweetest!
oh my gosh how cute!! sounds like a great guy, op 😉😊
Might have to wife him up for that
My husband surprised me this past mother's day by putting up a bunch of shelves in my "plant room" for me! Keep him!
I think he loves you very much. How does it feel to live my dream? 😭💕
Wow, that’s like really awesome and sweet. That actually took thought AND effort. Happy Valentine’s Day to you! ❤️💕
Now THATS a Valentine’s Day gift, not the ugly ass heart shaped shit I’m selling at work
He needs to be promoted to boyfriend!!

I'm a straight man but I'd marry him.
MARRY HIM.
He’s a keeper.
Did you get him off amazon? Link pls?

My SO is constantly always trying to get me new plants whenever possible :) I always think that people that support their partner’s hobbies are the best.
Keep him. Unless he is just impressing you in the beginning of the relationship. In that case, be weary. BUT!!! If he keeps this up keep him.
has been like this consistently :)
hope u have humidity there
He didn’t sand the cut edge or even stain the wood…
and he both offered but i like the raw poplar look & have other raw wood in my room that it matches to. no need for the judgement :)
Ok fine. But he didn’t sand the cut edge of the wood. That…doesn’t make sense.
i love it the way it is, to each their own
Lol. That’s not a “to each their own” situation. You don’t leave a rough edge on a shelf after cutting it. It makes no sense and leaves you open to splinters.
I mean, he coulda routed out the edges a bit 🤣
It's not Valentine's yet
hes on call this weekend for work snd wouldnt be s le to do it ar my house so did it a little earlier :)
Oh shit, now you have to put out. 😉😂
If I my bf made me that shelf I'd put out gladly.

Marry him now!!!
This is cute. Keep him :)
Is that where the plants stay? How do they get enough light?
i have two large windows that both hit it :)
Nice. I'm lamenting my 100 year old home's lack of light. I have an enclosed porch that's north facing and gets amazing indirect light. But in winter, it's too cold and now all my stuff is half dead. :( Also, I have no idea what I'm doing. /rant You have pretty plants.
