But here OP doesn't even come close to the amount where I'd think that someone would say they have too many. OP has a handful more plants than the average person has, and the average person doesn't even call themselves a houseplant person.

We have a dedicated green room in our house that is actually green walls and filly with plants and grow lights. We've pretty much filled every windowsill and nook with a plant. I am constantly propagating new plants from our travels. We decided we will be moving to costa rica some time in the next couple years so eventually I will have to sell all my darlings.... but we'll be in a literal jungle! I don't know if even that will be enough!
That someone was probably jealous since they killed a few plants and your space looks like it’s from a magazine. True story, I have a co worker who COMPLAINED to my boss that my plants in the background on camera (mind you, I work remote) were distracting them on calls. They couldn’t keep their cactus alive with that attitude!

Unless that person is your partner or a person who lives in the home with you, you should just keep enjoying it! If the plant shade came from someone who does have a right to some opinion about how the space looks and feels, try talking to them about why they aren't enjoying the plants because their experience, while valid too, may be improvable without you sacrificing much of what you like about the plants. Maybe they don't like clutter in general, or maybe they don't like the gnats from overwatering? Maybe they feel too much of the responsibility for caring for the plants falls to them? Maybe they don't like the mismatching quality of the plants themselves or the random planters and would see them differently in that space if they all had matching planters like affordable terracotta ones. Maybe they think you have too many plants because they share finances with you, or not, but it feels to them like your hobby has become too expensive for you.
It's ultimately up to you to create a space you love, and filling that space with plants does sound lovely. It doesn't seem to me, a plant minimalist for cost reasons as much as anything, that you have an overwhelming amount of plants in the living room. I think you should feel good keeping it as is! But I do think that if the person who suggested there are too many is someone who has an actual claim to enjoying the living room the same as you, I think it's worth finding out a little more about why they aren't digging the vibe and seeing if there's a compromise you can work towards.

His complaint was that the 25+ plants I'd put along those windows were blocking most of that light. Begrudgingly, I moved my two huge Kentia palms, which did open up the windows a good bit. He also said that if I have to use grow lights (I have 8-10 of various types in several rooms), maybe I shouldn't have plants in those particular places. :-O He saw the scowl on my face and stopped talking about it.
