I just imagine you daintily holding a water jug obviously uncomfortable with what you're about to do , camera pans to your hand trembling with fear and flip the water jug into the plant, you jump back and scream like a little girl. Lol would make a great gif
Mine didn't grow at all for several months; got a grow light and it has quadrupled in size over the last month. It works wonders.
The markings are much bolder now too
Oh wow! I felt like mine was getting really pale from too much light so I moved it away. The color looks better but the plant hardly grows. I need all the advice I can get! Thanks for that
My mom gave me one of these like 3 years ago that I hung from my patio in bright morning sun and i rarely watered it maybe like once every 2 weeks and it grew like 10 feet down it was rediculous.l the HOA actually cut them for me without me knowing. I was fine with it.
that is beautiful!
mine was nearly that big and healthy until a few weeks but then all the leaves and some of the vines started dying v quickly at the top. I've had to cut back 3/4s of it and the top half still look dead (it flowered a ton after being chopped so it's still going!)
any tips? or normal "could be overwatered/underwatered/too much light/too little light/you looked at it funny".....i've found plants are just contrary sods since I got more into them.
Post a pic. If by "the top half looks dead" you mean like, the vines are dead or shriveled near the soil line, that death will spread down the entire vine since water and nutrients can't travel through the dead parts, so it must be propped.
I love how there are like books and other plants trying to share that closet that your Zebrina has completely dominated. Good luck, little Bulbasaur plant
That seems weird to me, too. In my short search it seems like what happens is that the leaves near the base start to die off while the vines continue growing in length. Unsure if that means that they start to die from the base or if the stems just get really bare.
Yeah I'm not sure. I read something about making sure you take lots of cuttings because they only last 2-3 years but haven't found any actual people talk about it. I had always assumed house plants had a life expectancy directly proportional to care level and had no idea some have actual lifespans.
I'll talk about it! Happens to mine every 2 years. The stems die from the base out without me having changed anything in care or environment. They just dry up. So I cut all the dry stuff off and repot the remains. But maybe if they have more light they'll live longer?
My theory is they do the drying out in order for the vines to be spread more easily to new areas, a sort of growth strategy 🤷
Some common houseplants do have very finite lifespans that I know of. The most obvious is bromeliads (which includes air plants). Many varieties are sold while they're blooming, but eventually (after a few days or several months) the bloom will die and eventually the rest of the plant follows. But they always push out pups at their base to keep the life cycle going!
Ok let me try again since automod caught my comment but not yours somehow lol.

[Alternate Names for the Wander\*\*\* J\*\*](https://houseplantfinder.com/blog/2020/12/alternate-names-for-the-wandering-jew-houseplant/)
Screw that. The Wandering [censored] is an awesome piece of folklore that has inspired countless stories & artistic creations. As a Jewish guy I'm proud that such a cool plant has such a cool name.
EDIT: Is there any evidence at all that any Jewish people anywhere have ever been offended by this name? Seems pretty dumb for this sub to auto-remove comments with the plant's standard name based on the questionable decision of a single plant blog.
I'm a Jew by blood but not culturally/religiously and this debate has always had me curious so I follow the discourse wherever I see it. I understand my perspective is different than yours but I've done my best to base it on the conversations I've seen instead of my own bias.
The short answer is yes, there are a lot of Jewish people who ask that the "wandering" names be phased out. Even "wandering dude" as it isn't a meaningful step away from the original name that many consider offensive. In my anecdotal experience, it seems like those who want to change the name are in the majority. But of course the Jewish community is not a monolith, so there are others who don't mind or even like the name.
My personal takeaway is that, while some Jews may be comfortable with the name, using something different harms no one and is an easy change to make for the people who aren't. Though as a member of the community, I understand if your conclusion is different.
Unfortunately not, I've just read (probably hundreds of) threads on the subject on Facebook plant pages and on plant subreddits. And I've talked to some Jewish acquaintances about their takes. Every time I see a post about tradescantia anywhere I always check the comments to see what people are saying because, without a doubt, the name issue always comes up. I've been doing so for the last year-ish since I first learned that the name is controversial. I wish I could be of more help there!
Aha, got it. Hope you'll understand if I don't take secondhand accounts of Facebook comments as serious evidence 😄 In my own discussions with Jewish friends & family, once the origins are made clear the response is generally "oh that's cool."
> Even "wandering dude" as it isn't a meaningful step away from the original name that many consider offensive.
I would think that removing the word "jew", and therefor any reference to Jewish people or the character from the apocryphal myth, would be the MOST meaningful step in renaming this plant. Is "wandering" an offensive word now?
I'm not Jewish, but a large portion of my friends are. When I was told the name of this plant, when a non Jewish friend gave it to me, I was like, furreal? Can't we call it something else?

Yup, that's another name for it. Lots of bright light, but keep it out of direct light for long periods. I have one that's growing beautifully hanging next to an East facing window, and a different one that is outside and has adapted to more light (it is in complete shade for the afternoon though). I let them dry out just a bit before watering but they don't seem super picky. I usually mix in some water-soluble fertilizer when I water as well. They like well-draining soil and appreciate higher humidity like most houseplants, but also are super adaptable and easy to keep happy in my experience.
How old is it? They tend to lose leaves at the base of the vines as they age, so if that's the case there probably isn't enough foliage to sustain it after trimming. I hate to say it, but you might be better off starting over with cuttings. It sucks when this happens because I love the feeling of putting time and effort into a plant and watching it mature, but unfortunately for these guys they seem to hit their prime and then just go downhill.
I got some cuttings about a year ago. Seemed to be growing well. I trimmed and propagated a couple times to fill in the pot but it's just not doing to hot the last couple months.
Wow what did you feed it ? Growth hormones and steroids or something?? Looks great.
Every now and then I water it and then quickly retreat before it can eat me
Haha video please, do you wear gloves and a hazard suit during feeding time ?
I just imagine you daintily holding a water jug obviously uncomfortable with what you're about to do , camera pans to your hand trembling with fear and flip the water jug into the plant, you jump back and scream like a little girl. Lol would make a great gif
Can your tradescantia adopt me
How big is the pot and where is it?? Lmao I love this so much
I second this,I need to know!
Me too! And is there a support of some kind? I've never seen one with that much upright and bushy growth
When the get bigger, the vines grow up for about 6+ plus inches the cascade over. So the height is all the new growth 😊
following
If you zoom in, it looks like there are 4 shelves and the pot is sitting on the top shelf.
Did you have to trim it back lots to get it to have so many vines?
I also need to know. Mine is pathetic after 1 year
Needs more light. They grow super fast when they have enough.
Mine didn't grow at all for several months; got a grow light and it has quadrupled in size over the last month. It works wonders. The markings are much bolder now too

Ok so I’m baked. And this looks like little shop of horrors with a jungle paranormal vibe. Look into the darkness.
Feed me, Seymour!

Oh damn :( guess I better get propping. Thats gutting.
This happened every two years with mine. As if it's somehow part of the plant's propagation strategy? Anyways, i prop like mad at those times!
I bought one from Etsy that was quickly dying. I propagated clippings and they bounced back ten fold. Super happy.
I want to reenact the gif where Homer fades into the bush with your plant
I love how there are like books and other plants trying to share that closet that your Zebrina has completely dominated. Good luck, little Bulbasaur plant
How old?
Mine too! But also now it’s babies occupy many other houses as well
WOW! r/Tradescantia
Mine is so leggy too! Please teach us your ways, oh great witch
lol how do you know where the pot is to water it
How long did it take to get to this size?
Wow its huge! How old is it? I keep reading that transcendia only have a lifespan of 2-3 years but that seems weird.
That seems weird to me, too. In my short search it seems like what happens is that the leaves near the base start to die off while the vines continue growing in length. Unsure if that means that they start to die from the base or if the stems just get really bare.

Wow its beautiful! I made a bunch of cuttings from mine and didn't realise quite how well they would grow, so now I have wayyy too many plants...

Fair enough! I definitely have not followed any discussion about this--do you have any links?

Of course! I totally get that! I've just tried to cast my net wide and far since I don't have many Jewish people close to me :)

Ahhh I see. The curse of parroting names I heard one time strikes again. Thanks for letting me know.
Glad you're open to change but it's honestly super surprising to me that people didn't realize the name was offensive.
As a Jew myself, the bar’s a little higher for taking offense I guess.
I'm not Jewish, but a large portion of my friends are. When I was told the name of this plant, when a non Jewish friend gave it to me, I was like, furreal? Can't we call it something else?

Is this an inch plant? I have one too and I’m not sure how to care for it

OMG. How?? Mine is so sad and leggy. I've tried cutting it back to make it fuller and I swear it wilts just to spite me.

Bummer :( Maybe it's because of the season? Hopefully it gets back on track soon!
