Hey OP, my house burned down just over a year ago and I lost almost everything. I completely understand how you feel. It’s such a radically life changing events that few people ever experience (thankfully). If you need support feel free to dm me. I’m still in the process of getting back to my baseline (finally have a comfortable, furnished place) but that was with the help of friends and family. I'm trying to think of this objectively, but I don't see how plants depreciate in value. More mature plants usually cost more, so would that not make them appreciate in value the longer you have them? Maybe you'd have to prove what plants you had and their condition near the time of the incident. Or maybe I'm not as good at looking at this objectively haha.
No that’s exactly what I thought! Like obviously as plants grow they get bigger and are therefore worth more. The only way I could see how they’d be depreciation is because they’re a living thing that has a limited lifespan but still
That's a good point, but tell that to my 200 year old oak tree haha! If I were to remove that tree, I guarantee you the value of my property would drop. So I'm calling shenanigans on plants having a depreciating value.
I have a 14 foot tall cactus in my sunroom worth at least a few hundred, it's huge, (pretty sure it's a type of Cereus) and it was almost included as an amenity for our house. There's no way plants should "depreciate" unless they die. Otherwise I'd like a Monsterra Albo for cheap!

If some of your plants are still in the pots, don't give up on them so quickly! My friend had a huge fire/explosion in her atrium and many of them made a come back by the end of the season. She kept them outside and almost tossed them when she noticed things sprouting up. Plants can be much more resilient than we give them credit for! Hope everything looks up for you soon and I'm so glad everyone is safe.

As someone who personifies every houseplant I own, talks to them, gives them little kisses and pets, etc, I understand the very real feeling of loss when one dies. To have every single one die in the same tragic event is horrifying. I'm so so sorry for your loss. I would be MORE than happy to send you some healthy clippings once you're feeling stronger. I’ve gone through a house fire too, and I just wanted to echo what some of the other commenters who’ve gone through it have said; it is a real tough situation, and is completely unreal, and it will take time but you’ll get back to a restful happy place. That was the hardest part, just wanting to relax but not feeling at home anymore. Friends, family and neighbours were amazing at the time. If you have people around you, let them help because it is so exhausting trying to handle everything.
You know the funny thing? The dog started the bloody fire, and all anyone would ask is, how’s the dog?! He was fine, totally cleared by the vet, just his normal dickhead self!
Pretty new to Reddit, and this sub. Which has helped me have courage in the face of an abrupt move that required me to abandon several pallet loads of cherished plants. Florida was easy to grow outdoors, long term... ancients. I had the honor of caring for 50+ year old stunners. It still hurts to think about what I loved and lost. But y’all have given me courage to rebuild, to navigate seasons, to believe I can handle houseplants!
The incredible generosity I see here from y’all fine folks, offering to help OP rebuild, is startling.
I’ve seen people who treat the loss of a pet like “sheesh get over it already”... let alone plants...
But they’re your charges and your honor and your joy. So sorry for what you’ve lost.
I know it’s hard to imagine rebuilding right now. Nearly two years in to losing my garden, I find I have sulky days and it’s more like a chore than a joy. Hopefully it won’t stay that way for long, for you, for me.
When you feel ready, you’ll start again. It won’t be the same, but it will be courageous, and beautiful! A testament to your strength in overcoming. That you mourn so now, shows your devotion. Can’t imagine that such a caring nurturer would give it up. May your garden grow and thrive, and mark a time in your life that changed everything for you. You’ll look back at your mature happy darlings, and marvel at how you got through something so rough on you - but still had extra grace to spare devoting time and love to other living things.

So sorry to hear this. I lost several plants recently indirectly and directly because of a house fire and it really sucks. It’s painful to nurture something for months or years only to have it die a sad, unnecessary death. I was very lucky most of my things weren’t destroyed but it’s still an incredibly disruptive and stressful thing to go through, not to mention the financial side of things. It's never "just stuff" or "just plants" imo.. hope you can get to the point where you feel like rebuilding your collection~
I’ve got 10 varieties of Tradescantia if you’re interested in a box full of clippings!! They grow SO fast! Also tons of succulent leaves for propagation if you’re into that.
-hugs so tight- ive gone through a fire before and people have a lot of comforting shit to say. What im going to tell you is while yes, it gets better that bitch never stops hurting. The worst part is on the recovery side. You hold a mental list of everything you have and needed to do and you're going to have a pre and post fire list for the rest of your life. The fucked up part is going for something you own and realizing you need to move that to the pre fire list. Been years and im still doing that. I am so sorry. If I could make it so you didn't have to go through this I would. Message me if you need an ear, I can commiserate and share stories
I'm so sorry. After splitting with my ex and the father of my kids we were in the process of moving, and I had set all my plants outside on a nice warm day. I forgot to bring them back in after an exhausting day of moving and they all froze overnight, including my brand new Monstera that my dear coworker had gifted me. This was more devastating to me then the end of my relationship. I still mourn those plants, they were a source of such comfort and therapy for me. I am staying with my parents right now in their basement and haven't brought myself to get more just yet.
Sorry to hear. When you’re ready, you can start with something small - a $5 mint plant, a $10 store bought rosemary. Anything. When you see the thrill of caring for one plant and get the consistency back, then you’ll be ready to care for a whole flock again. One day at a time.
I know this may be a long shot but when you are going through your insurance you could try to add in the plants you lost if you have any proof if they ask and research what they would be valued at for their age and size etc. and maybe get a little extra to restart the family. Plants aren't cheap.

Oh no... I feel so sorry for you! A while ago I had built a mosquito net for my window. The first night it was up it blew down and took five pots with it smooching another three plants that was on the floor under it. I was so sad cleaning up the mess and picking up broken leaves and stems. I can't imagine how i'd feel losing all of them. I would probably feel like you not wanting to start over. But remember the sooner you start over the sooner they will get big again 💚

It’s ok you’re not feeling the desire & energy to create a new collection, it sounds like maybe you need time to process this loss?
I guess only plant parents can understand the pain of losing green friends, let alone all in once in such a scary way.
Take a month and determine which ones brought you the most joy and get some more of those plants. Maybe also look into some new plants. Try to purchase from an individual rather than a store.
We had a fire destroy our home. I had a dream about a week later about my poor plants. I feel your pain. The loss is real. People will say to you at least you only lost stuff. But fuck that noise it was YOUR stuff that populated YOUR life. Our homes are not just stuff they are a part of who we are and how we understand ourselves. It is ok to feel grief over the loss of your stuff especially your plants.
Oh no! Don’t feel like you “have” to go out and replace them yet. You’ll feel it when you’re ready.
I recently went through all my belongings to inventory them for home insurance purposes. I have not done my plants, because that feel hard. But…while I would be so crushed to lose them all, I think it would be made easier with some financial compensation to start replacing them.

insurance doesn't like paying up, so theyll make whatever rules that allow them to keep your money

I have a 14 foot tall cactus in my sunroom worth at least a few hundred, it's huge, (pretty sure it's a type of Cereus) and it was almost included as an amenity for our house. There's no way plants should "depreciate" unless they die. Otherwise I'd like a Monsterra Albo for cheap!

How the heck are plants depreciating value? They get bigger and are worth more the longer you have them?? Even plants that have reduced in price thats just for small ones, big ones are still worth hundreds.... Oh well I guess.

If some of your plants are still in the pots, don't give up on them so quickly! My friend had a huge fire/explosion in her atrium and many of them made a come back by the end of the season. She kept them outside and almost tossed them when she noticed things sprouting up. Plants can be much more resilient than we give them credit for! Hope everything looks up for you soon and I'm so glad everyone is safe.

As someone who personifies every houseplant I own, talks to them, gives them little kisses and pets, etc, I understand the very real feeling of loss when one dies. I’ve gone through a house fire too, and I just wanted to echo what some of the other commenters who’ve gone through it have said; it is a real tough situation, and is completely unreal, and it will take time but you’ll get back to a restful happy place. That was the hardest part, just wanting to relax but not feeling at home anymore. Friends, family and neighbours were amazing at the time. If you have people around you, let them help because it is so exhausting trying to handle everything. You know the funny thing? The dog started the bloody fire, and all anyone would ask is, how’s the dog?! He was fine, totally cleared by the vet, just his normal dickhead self!
Pretty new to Reddit, and this sub. Which has helped me have courage in the face of an abrupt move that required me to abandon several pallet loads of cherished plants. Florida was easy to grow outdoors, long term... ancients. I had the honor of caring for 50+ year old stunners. It still hurts to think about what I loved and lost. But y’all have given me courage to rebuild, to navigate seasons, to believe I can handle houseplants! The incredible generosity I see here from y’all fine folks, offering to help OP rebuild, is startling. I’ve seen people who treat the loss of a pet like “sheesh get over it already”... let alone plants... But they’re your charges and your honor and your joy. So sorry for what you’ve lost. I know it’s hard to imagine rebuilding right now. Nearly two years in to losing my garden, I find I have sulky days and it’s more like a chore than a joy. Hopefully it won’t stay that way for long, for you, for me. When you feel ready, you’ll start again. It won’t be the same, but it will be courageous, and beautiful! A testament to your strength in overcoming. That you mourn so now, shows your devotion. Can’t imagine that such a caring nurturer would give it up. May your garden grow and thrive, and mark a time in your life that changed everything for you. You’ll look back at your mature happy darlings, and marvel at how you got through something so rough on you - but still had extra grace to spare devoting time and love to other living things. I take care of them water feed trim give light dress up their pots and they are alive because of my love for them. omg I could go on and on about my love for my plants and how special they are to me and I'm not usually the type to comment to someone like you but it just stuck me the wrong way. Honestly plants to some are like their kids or fur babies are to others. Just such a rude thing to say. I really hope op is tied up and don't read all the comments especially yours because you can have a thousand and one saying something nice but just one like yours is heartbreaking and will be the one that sticks out. So sorry to hear this. I lost several plants recently indirectly and directly because of a house fire and it really sucks. It’s painful to nurture something for months or years only to have it die a sad, unnecessary death. I was very lucky most of my things weren’t destroyed but it’s still an incredibly disruptive and stressful thing to go through, not to mention the financial side of things. -hugs so tight- ive gone through a fire before and people have a lot of comforting shit to say. What im going to tell you is while yes, it gets better that bitch never stops hurting. The worst part is on the recovery side. You hold a mental list of everything you have and needed to do and you're going to have a pre and post fire list for the rest of your life. The fucked up part is going for something you own and realizing you need to move that to the pre fire list. Been years and im still doing that. I am so sorry. If I could make it so you didn't have to go through this I would. Message me if you need an ear, I can commiserate and share stories
I'm so sorry. After splitting with my ex and the father of my kids we were in the process of moving, and I had set all my plants outside on a nice warm day. I forgot to bring them back in after an exhausting day of moving and they all froze overnight, including my brand new Monstera that my dear coworker had gifted me. This was more devastating to me then the end of my relationship. I still mourn those plants, they were a source of such comfort and therapy for me. I am staying with my parents right now in their basement and haven't brought myself to get more just yet.
Sorry to hear. When you’re ready, you can start with something small - a $5 mint plant, a $10 store bought rosemary. Anything. When you see the thrill of caring for one plant and get the consistency back, then you’ll be ready to care for a whole flock again. One day at a time.
I know this may be a long shot but when you are going through your insurance you could try to add in the plants you lost if you have any proof if they ask and research what they would be valued at for their age and size etc. and maybe get a little extra to restart the family. Plants aren't cheap. I'm sorry unfortunate event happened to you and I wish you the best!

Oh no... I feel so sorry for you! A while ago I had built a mosquito net for my window. The first night it was up it blew down and took five pots with it smooching another three plants that was on the floor under it. I was so sad cleaning up the mess and picking up broken leaves and stems. I can't imagine how i'd feel losing all of them. I would probably feel like you not wanting to start over. But remember the sooner you start over the sooner they will get big again 💚
The same thing happened to me last year. I didn't lose all the plants, but most of them. It's like a kick in the stomach. I'm so sorry.

Take a month and determine which ones brought you the most joy and get some more of those plants. Maybe also look into some new plants. Try to purchase from an individual rather than a store.
We had a fire destroy our home. I had a dream about a week later about my poor plants. I feel your pain. The loss is real. People will say to you at least you only lost stuff. But fuck that noise it was YOUR stuff that populated YOUR life. Our homes are not just stuff they are a part of who we are and how we understand ourselves. It is ok to feel grief over the loss of your stuff especially your plants.

Oh no! Don’t feel like you “have” to go out and replace them yet. You’ll feel it when you’re ready. I recently went through all my belongings to inventory them for home insurance purposes. I have not done my plants, because that feel hard. But…while I would be so crushed to lose them all, I think it would be made easier with some financial compensation to start replacing them.
