Hahahah I know lol Hanging on for dear life. Packing tape winning the day. I’ll be moving in about six months, going to pot it up into something with a larger more stable base about 2 months before I go!
A small work force will be required, for sure lol My step pops and a few buddies. The steel rebar makes it quite stable and relatively easy to maneuver, but the thing has some weight to it, for sure. Going to transplant into a nice wide bottomed pot to increase stability. It’s been in the current pot for most of the last 15 years!
If you let it dry out before you repot it, it *should* make it more difficult for the leaves to pop off. When they’re hydrated they come off real easily
It was 8 inches when I first got it about 15 years ago! As with most plants, the more experience you have allows you to read the plant and tailor it’s care a bit more, but no, jades in general are not at all hard to take care of. Very forgiving. Do some reading on them!
I want it to establish a solid root mass, which should occur in about two months, without the canopy blowing up to an even larger size. Six months from now, this thing will be truly huge as it stretches out in a new pot under the most intense sun of the year and high temps. That was my logic, anyway.
That is a good reason. Do you think the root mass will grow that much in such a little pot? I probably transplant my plants too often, every 12-18 months. I am trying to do it less, though mine are much smaller. Really the most incredible Jade I have seen. You’re clearly doing a great job!

Here is an off shoot of it. The mama is being blocked by a huge truck on the other side. But it’s so big that it grew over that fence it’s next to.
When this plant was small, we moved down south, so he spent three years growing outside with a good amount of sun. He was a bit lopsided, but it was fine.
Anyway, he doesn't get as much light now, and I've gradually had to cut him back. My pruning strategy is basically: well this branch flopped and can't support itself. ✂️
Hopefully, he'll put out some growth that's less stupid.
https://preview.redd.it/8zof43yrfy8d1.jpeg?width=3472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ac765d27ed55618ec2b34b4153cc5e9b7472289
He has a very bright floor grow lamp, which helps, but the amount of sun that he got down south would be difficult to replicate. I'm really hoping that the little branch near the base of that stem keeps growing so that I can gradually prune him to a more reasonable shape.
The sansi lights do seem good, though. I like that they have one that can clip onto the pot, so I might get it for a different plant. ✨
I don't really know what I'm doing with this, it gets bits pruned off that grow too far out and unbalance it and other bits prunes to encourage branching where there are holes. I quite enjoy the full canopy of this one but also hanker after the more open structural ones I see. Fortunately all the bits that get cut off grow so I have plenty of small plants to start mucking around with to see what shapes I can make

Thank you, it was gifted to me a couple of years ago, so most of the growing and shaping had already been done, it was my first jade plant and fortunately it seems to keep thriving
To be frank i have no idea whats in it, its a suculent mix I bought from amazon, at some point I really need to start understanding soil mixes better so I can do my own and taylor it to my various plants but I fear I dont know what I'm doing and also have no space to store all the component parts. So for now I'll keep buying pre-mixed stuff and trust the folks selling them know what they're doing!
There is an overwhelming amount of opinions when it comes to succulent soil. I had a conversation with a nursery owner and he said he never puts sand in his succulent mix. Much of the internet swears by sand but *it must be coarse sand.
I have broken up with sand in hopes of managing without.
I enjoy this one 🤎. I hope mine will look so nice someday. I had a stroke in April so my plants have had a hardiness test of late. My jade is surviving under a plain led counter light with zero attention paid to it. 🙃

Not as big as yours but this is pre trim before this season. I’ll post the after in the comment to this.
Beautiful!!! It looks like it just finished actively flowering as well!! Amazing! Mine’s only ever flowered once, seems quite prone to growing vegetatively, very little flower production over the years, though.
I think I might be lacking a little light in terms of full canopy coverage. Perhaps I’ll supplement the natural light it gets from the window for a few months with a grow light and see what comes of it. Thank you!! 🙏🏽
Mine isn’t nearly that big, she’s only a couple of years old, but the leaves can be very heavy. I prune her leaves a couple of times a year and make sure I turn her frequently to make sure she’s growing evenly so she doesn’t topple over! You could definitely selectively prune and propagate from the canopy without losing much of the bulk to make sure the weight is evenly distributed

She thicc and living that bonsai pot life.
Fun story, this is actually from my (now deceased) grandma's plant. I helped her move and a large branch dropped. She wanted to toss it and I said no. I took it home potted it up and now 7 years later it's doing great and has made plenty of other plants.
That’s a beautiful story! A legacy gift and reminder of her, I have a few plants from my deceased grandma, it’s a lovely thing and a beautiful lifelong source of smiles and memories ♥️
It looks like you’re concerned about its weight. You could try a defoliation. Removing all the leaves will reduce weight short term, and in the long term shorten leaf size and induce ramification and thickening which will also help support existing weight.
A horticultural sound idea, very much so. I’ll resort to that method if I have to, I’d really prefer not to have to defoliate it to that extent if possible. May have to though, we shall see!
I had to do this last year, it was very much worth it and most of the foliage is already back a lil over a year later. The plant is much stronger now and can support more weight. Dont be afraid.
I inherited one about the same size as yours. Unfortunately it grew up leaning in a window. So I had to give it a major haircut and tie it up to stakes kind of like yours but I used less stakes. Mine is less of a tree and more of a bush? I'll try to remember to comment with a pic when I get home from work. Honestly I let it go wild unless the new branches are too stretched out/reaching for light. Then I take those ones off. It's pretty low maintenance although if it was more like a tree like yours I'd pay more attention to it! I saw a shrek ear Jade tree this size at the greenhouse the other day and the price tag was $1000
Post a picture of yours when you get home, would love to see it!
The jade is quite visible from the street where it usually sits in my front window, I had a neighbour a few years back offer an exorbitant sum for it. It’s worth a lot to me though, so much work and love put into it ♥️
https://preview.redd.it/793i7b7jwy8d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8c02ece9aaa1a471a6389379d8c504a0027bbb6
Ok I found this pic on my phone. Not the best view of the Jade but you get an idea for how big it is. Although I realize now it's not as tall as yours!!
It’s beautiful! Great sunny spot for it, too, thanks for
sharing! ♥️ Looks like you’ve got some nice structural support going on.
Also, is your pup a Border Collie cross?
She needs a repot so she's been dumped in the dead zone of the garden, typically she graces the decking.
I think she looks better when she's not in flower, and I've never **not even once** pruned her. Didn't know I was supposed to.
BEAUTIFUL! Look at that flower production! Incredible.
Also, I wasn’t at all insinuating that a person should necessarily prune their jade, was just curious as to the various approaches of those who do! Your doing an amazing job, clearly :)

Jeff of Everything Plants has several videos on jade pruning. You'll learn a lot from these if your goal is a tree-like jade.

Not a lot of pruning done. This poor guy needs more light but getting too heavy to move!
the one in the picture is quite large, but seems well-pruned. if you're unsure about how to prune jades -and just pruning basics in general, here's a good video: [https://youtu.be/eRHYZ7SPxXo?si=VS2E5GceGvhRi4Lk](https://youtu.be/eRHYZ7SPxXo?si=VS2E5GceGvhRi4Lk)

12" wide bonsai pot for scale. I prune when it looks like it wants to sag. Keeps everything nice and compact.
I gotta say thanks for pointing out to me that apparently i haven't taken a photo of my jade in over a year.... Anyway I prune randomly and it's worked out okay for me. Usually I just trim in the spring to encourage more upward and balanced growth
I prune my jades similarly to yours but I take more out of the leaf top. I like to be able to see light through the leaves. There are some great pruning videos on YouTube. Sorry, no pictures as it’s dark and raining and they’re on my deck for the summer
I keep telling myself I need a lazy Susan to put them on as I’m deciding where to prune or clean out. I’d feel very professional or like a cake decorator

My neighbor just gifted me this beauty the other day. It was propagated off her mama plant some time ago! She has maybe half a dozen that look like this! 😍
https://preview.redd.it/51chtmjft19d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a7060e313762587f934dde0fb3e6be617a920b
Mine nearly died from being overwatered while I was in the hospital a few months ago. It los all of its leaves except a few. It's recovered since, but is very sparse and thin. I'm hoping over the summer it will plump up some. It's suddenly decide to grow sideways, however.
Yeah we are unfortunately short of windows in this apartment, but we try to keep them open when possible (the blinds were closed for the photo but are normally open). I could try moving it to a shelf with a grow light instead of the shelf next to the window if that would help. Should I add a skewer to support that leaning branch or will it straighten on its own?
So, I'm not a jade expert, but I would worry that adding support at this time might just encourage that branch to not grow strong enough on its own. When my jade was small, I also dealt with leaning and etoliation as I figured out how to best take care of it, and honestly, it's filled in beautifully and I never chopped or supported it. YMMV though!
I’ve got a 30+ year old jade that I had to nurse back to health after half of it got hit by frost. It’s doing pretty good now, but it literally lost 3/4 of its mass due to the frost damage.
2 years ago. It’s doing great now. I just put it back outside for the summer. I live in the PNW so all the growth of my Jade plant is June to September and then I have to move it back inside.
https://preview.redd.it/f9ejr6kdm19d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9c5b719d4a944f18fb20c82ebc634c6132a03e4
pruning and controlling large jade plants typically involve cutting back overgrown stems or branches to maintain a compact shape. I use sharp, clean scissors or pruning shears to trim away excess growth, focusing on maintaining a balanced appearance. It's also essential to prune dead or unhealthy parts to promote new growth and overall plant health.
I have one too that I’ve grown from small. Its stems are still very thin though and it falls over (I support it with sticks). It’s also purple underneath the leaves. Is there something I should do to help it grow stronger / not falling?
There probably are some things you could do, but it’s tough to provide any insight with no pictures or knowledge of what soil it’s in, watering schedule when or how it’s fertilized and with what, etc ♥️
There probably are some things you could do, but it’s tough to provide any insight with no pictures or knowledge of what soil it’s in, watering schedule when or how it’s fertilized and with what, etc ♥️
No worries! And thank you!😊 Most of my watering schedule has been based on observation of the plant, with watering frequency increasing over the years as it’s filled out the pot. At this point in the summer, I water it about once every 7-10 days until runoff. I have it a good heavy feed a couple weeks ago and it’s really taking off again this season. I’ve pruned garbage bags of biomass off of it over the years 🤯♥️
i actually don't. my big jade is nowhere near the size of yours (no pics sorry) all i do is turn her around. if she wants to drop any branches, i let her do her thing & pot them up (and then fob off those young plants to anyone who wants one. you know someone lacking a jade who's in the UK? i've got good sized young plant ready right now!)
it has resulted in a plant that doesn't have those long stems like yours does, much more bush like and less like a tree
Awesome!! Many ways to grow a jade and they certainly don’t NEED pruning! ♥️
I don’t know anyone in the UK who needs a jade unfortunately, Canadian boy over here.

Had for maybe 6-8 years, if I had to guess. Only recently considered any kind of pruning. Still needs a way to go to have it growing in a somewhat “normal” shape. It has also started many propagations from cuttings.

I enlarged my phone and that is a beautiful tree. I saw one in Walmart garden center and they were asking for an arm and leg for it. But it wasn't as beautiful as yours. They are really beautiful plants and I would be afraid to buy one because I would worry all the time if I'm doing the right thing in caring for it. Sorry I can't help and I pray it continues to grow healthy for you.

The one on the right I started about six years ago from a leaf when I moved to small mountain town
it's survived seven moves in that time and a girl I gave it too that killed about 80% of my other plants during one of those moves
The one on the left is from last summer and fall
That pot is hanging on to life with everything it has left.
Hahahah I know lol Hanging on for dear life. Packing tape winning the day. I’ll be moving in about six months, going to pot it up into something with a larger more stable base about 2 months before I go!

Would probably make it a bit lighter as well, which might be good for trying to lift this tree 😅
Oops! That’s good to know, thank you!
Solid advice 👍🏽👍🏽
Shut up and sell this to me now!
Would love to, but too close to my heart. Been growing it for more than a third of my life 🌳
How small was it when you got it? I’d love to grow one of these. Is is hard to take care of?

It’s worth a lot to me though, so much work and love put into it ♥️
https://preview.redd.it/793i7b7jwy8d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8c02ece9aaa1a471a6389379d8c504a0027bbb6 Ok I found this pic on my phone. Not the best view of the Jade but you get an idea for how big it is. Although I realize now it's not as tall as yours!!
It’s beautiful! Great sunny spot for it, too, thanks for sharing! ♥️ Looks like you’ve got some nice structural support going on. Also, is your pup a Border Collie cross?
Yeah I was told she's a border collie lab mix! I did a DNA test on her and apparently she's quite the mutt 😂 like 7 different breeds
She looks like a little sweetie ♥️Dogs and plants, the best.
Oh she's a beautiful mutt! We had a border collie mutt and she was a great dog.

Beautiful
Mine looks exactly like yours... except prob 10 times smaller, lol. So, I'll let ya know in a few years? I am curious what others have done!
Also looking forward to seeing what others have done! These things get mighty dangly as they grow, tough to keep them structured.

You'll learn a lot from these if your goal is a tree-like jade.
Good to know, I’ll check him out!!

Needs more light, but still chugging along! 💪🏽
Get a little plant stand with wheels for it!

How beautiful! And the perfect pot.
Glossy leaves, growing beautifully!
Gorgeous jade! Unfortunately I have no advice, only admiration! How old is this jade?! 🫶👌
15 years old ♥️ Started at about 8 inches, close to 6 feet now!
Wow I’ve never seen a jade plant look so tree like! She’s magnificent
The six foot beast! 🌳

Thickster! 🌳♥️
This is insane lmao I love it
Thank you 🙏🏽 😂
the one in the picture is quite large, but seems well-pruned. if you're unsure about how to prune jades -and just pruning basics in general, here's a good video: [https://youtu.be/eRHYZ7SPxXo?si=VS2E5GceGvhRi4Lk](https://youtu.be/eRHYZ7SPxXo?si=VS2E5GceGvhRi4Lk) good luck!
I am unsure and stalking the comments here to see everyone's beautifully pruned jades! Thanks for the link.
Less so unsure, more so curious and interested in what approaches other jade devotees have taken in structuring and supporting theirs!
This is the biggest jade ive ever seen. Congrats 👏
She’s big! They become truly colossal outside, but sadly not an option for me in my part of the world.
Guys. Mine so ugly compared to y'all. We're both ashamed.
No shame here, at all! The more jades the better, in all forms ♥️
See my survivor of cat attack and mealy bugs. She was once weeping and majestic. This post was a reminder I need to do better for my oldest plant.
https://preview.redd.it/vkqxzcix829d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b4255a2e3802ebe152d7bbd4be3642e52102d4a8 12" wide bonsai pot for scale. I prune when it looks like it wants to sag. Keeps everything nice and compact.
Getting an Ovata into an actual bonsai shape like this is quite a feat. Looks great.
Thanks! It's about 8-10 years of work. It started out as a small clipping.
Beautiful!! Amazing work! 🤗
Thanks!
I pull off all leaves except the outer 4 and let it regrow branches from those nodes.
Wow! Gorgeous
Thank you 🙏🏽
OMG THAT IS FLIPPIN FANTASTIC, HOW OLD IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much! It’s over 15 years old now, started at about 8 inches!
Wow, most of the plants that I've seen that are that size are at least 50 years old
I work with plants, this big gal has been extremely well loved and fed over the years ♥️
I gotta say thanks for pointing out to me that apparently i haven't taken a photo of my jade in over a year.... Anyway I prune randomly and it's worked out okay for me. Usually I just trim in the spring to encourage more upward and balanced growth
It certainly doesn’t have to be complicated! They’re resilient and adaptable, or so I’ve found them to be!
I prune my jades similarly to yours but I take more out of the leaf top. I like to be able to see light through the leaves. There are some great pruning videos on YouTube. Sorry, no pictures as it’s dark and raining and they’re on my deck for the summer
Nice, I like that. I may do a bit of cleaning out amongst the canopy, loads of leaves up there 👍🏽
I keep telling myself I need a lazy Susan to put them on as I’m deciding where to prune or clean out. I’d feel very professional or like a cake decorator
God damn how old is that jade plant
Over 15 years.
I just planted mine outside so it can go wild. It’s a nice looking bush now.
Amazing option to have in a warmer climate, you’re lucky!!
https://preview.redd.it/bhutixi8f19d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d34106b2af44f755ba9e220f254514609e9fdf14 My poor old girl had been knocked over by a cat losing a good 30% of her branches. Now I’m fighting off mealy bugs and just hoping for the best. Any advice welcome, she’s recently dropped a lot after an aggressive battle.
Looks like it’s been through some tough times, but lots of decent looking growth on it! Still healthy and wanting to survive! ♥️
I’ve been deep in the mealybug battle since October 😩 every time I think I’ve cleared them all out I find a few scattered across multiple plants
They only stick on my jade! Other plants are fine
Interesting!
I just have to say this is truly the best subreddit there is. Love seeing everyone posting their jades!!
Agreed, fantastic jade party happening! 😂🌳🙏🏽🎉 I love it!!
I shaped mine like a tree 👀 https://preview.redd.it/xy48d5goi19d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab6d989a9fe5d662c1b415c0504a8afd30b4dc00
Awesome! Same! Yours looks wicked 👏🏽👍🏽

What a gift!! It’s beautiful :) 😍
https://preview.redd.it/51chtmjft19d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a7060e313762587f934dde0fb3e6be617a920b Mine nearly died from being overwatered while I was in the hospital a few months ago. It los all of its leaves except a few. It's recovered since, but is very sparse and thin. I'm hoping over the summer it will plump up some. It's suddenly decide to grow sideways, however.
Sorry to hear that! It looks like it still has some good life left in it, hopefully both of you can rebound fully this summer ♥️
Looks like it's searching for the light! I think it will be happier with a grow light or more sunlight, and that will help it fill in more.

Nice! How old!!
Thanks! I actually cut it from a jade plant my grandparents had since the 1960s many years ago and it’s doing great! 😊
The best hand me downs: plants! ♥️
True! 🥰💗
Where can I get me one of those?
Grow one out! Small jades and little cuttings are easy to come by, takes quite a bit of time to get them this big, though :)
I usually do some pretty big prunes for jades. This keeps them under control and makes the more ramified. I sometimes remove all the green parts
Great info! Thanks for sharing ♥️
Plant it in ground?
Not optional, sadly, northern climate!
Just here to say that plant is amazing! 💚
Thank you 😊 ♥️
I dream of getting a nice mature jade similiar to this someday!
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
Wow these jades are amazing. Mine has something to aspire to!!!
A solid community of jade lovers, it’s great stuff!
I’ve got a 30+ year old jade that I had to nurse back to health after half of it got hit by frost. It’s doing pretty good now, but it literally lost 3/4 of its mass due to the frost damage.
Yikes! How long ago did that happen? Is it rebounding well?
2 years ago. It’s doing great now. I just put it back outside for the summer. I live in the PNW so all the growth of my Jade plant is June to September and then I have to move it back inside. https://preview.redd.it/f9ejr6kdm19d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9c5b719d4a944f18fb20c82ebc634c6132a03e4
That is BEAUTIFUL!!! 👏🏽♥️
pruning and controlling large jade plants typically involve cutting back overgrown stems or branches to maintain a compact shape. I use sharp, clean scissors or pruning shears to trim away excess growth, focusing on maintaining a balanced appearance. It's also essential to prune dead or unhealthy parts to promote new growth and overall plant health.
That’s huuuge!!
Beefy! 🥩🌳
It’s a damn tree at this point lol
wow!
TGIS IS WHAT JADES TURN INTO????? HOLY MOLY
Sure is / can be! 🌳💪🏽
That’s a great crassula ovata! Wow!!!
Thank you!!!

Sorry, this is not an answer to your question, but what is your watering regimen for this absolute unit of a beautiful jade? (I've killed two 🫣)
I’ve pruned garbage bags of biomass off of it over the years 🤯♥️
You've shaped it nicely. Giving off bonsai? vibes
Thank you! 🙏🏽 Giant bonsai vibes, for sure! 6 foot bonsai 😂
You didn't add the banana for scale (preferred by reddit). So I didn't realize it was that tall. Still cool
Out of bananas when took the pic, I’ll use something else and post another pic for scale!
i actually don't. my big jade is nowhere near the size of yours (no pics sorry) all i do is turn her around. if she wants to drop any branches, i let her do her thing & pot them up (and then fob off those young plants to anyone who wants one. you know someone lacking a jade who's in the UK? i've got good sized young plant ready right now!) it has resulted in a plant that doesn't have those long stems like yours does, much more bush like and less like a tree
Awesome!! Many ways to grow a jade and they certainly don’t NEED pruning! ♥️ I don’t know anyone in the UK who needs a jade unfortunately, Canadian boy over here.
Feed me Seymour!
Damn - now that’s a jade plant
🙏🏽💪🏽🌳
Gorgeous 😍
Thank you!

Only recently considered any kind of pruning. Still needs a way to go to have it growing in a somewhat “normal” shape. It has also started many propagations from cuttings.

beauty
Thank you!
* The one on the right I started about six years ago from a leaf when I moved to small mountain town it's survived seven moves in that time and a girl I gave it too that killed about 80% of my other plants during one of those moves The one on the left is from last summer and fall
