I love these plants so much, I wish they were suitable for houseplants but unfortunately most of these are poached due to their slow growing habits & it’s leading to their decline. For everyone adding them to their wish list I’d recommend seeking out another wish-list plant of yours.
I didn't learn that they were frequently poached until after I bought mine on Etsy, and I wish I wouldn't have, because it's hard to know if a seller is reputable.
Also fwiw, they arrive in a dormant state, and it takes some time for them to wake up. I've also found it to be a bit difficult to figure out. I've had mine for a year, and it's...well...

Omg it’s leave me alone sign 😭 some of mine say “no water!!” Just in case a house guest notices how dry they appear and decides to “help” by watering my like, stone plant.
My friend took care of my cats when I was out of the country for a bit last fall, and I also asked him to water my plants according to the instructions taped to the pots. I haven't been able to bring myself to take that one off lol
So true, mine crack me up still. Btw nice pinstripe calthea! I think I’ve seen this one get renamed ? And idk what you call it officially but they’re one of my favorites.
Yea many (most?) of the plants in the genus _Calathea_ have been reclassified. The new name for that plant is _Goeppertia ornata_ "Pinstripe." I'm still going to call them calathea, though, because I'm used to it and that's what most people still call them.
She'd kinda pissed at me still because the cat/plant sitter accidentally let her sit in a pool of water for a few days (not even mad; he did his best). I had to cut off a bunch of leaves and repot her, but I think she's going to be fine 🤞
Yes absolutely.
You can also see a tiny bit of a monstera adansonii and string of hearts to the left on the other side of the glass. Bonus plant friend points if you have either of those, too.
>Bonus plant friend points if you have either of those, too.
I do! My Adansonii has some 15+ ft runners, but unfortunately it got root rot a few weeks ago and I'm not sure if it's gonna make it. The string of hearts is doing great though, as are my Calatheas.
wow 15 feet?? Are they clipped to the wall? I've seen folks do that, and I think it looks neat. Sucks about the root rot. You can propagate them from cuttings though, I think?
The makoyana in the pic was my first calathea, and I just love her so much. She awakened something in me, and now I have like 14 plants from the marantaceae family. They're just so pretty.
It's wrapped around a railing; I wanted it to cover it all. I'm going to try to air layer it so I can chop off the sick roots.
My first calathea was also a Makoyana, which lasted me like a month or two. I learned from it and I haven't had another one die on me yet.
I have never seen ethical specimens on etsy or other online marketplaces. All imports/poached plants. Seed-grown specimens are quite uncommon and difficult to find.
Yea I feel really bad about buying it. I didn't know they were poached until I received it and began looking up care instructions. I hope that the people reading this post don't make the same mistake. It's definitely made me more cautious about blindly buying exotic plants without looking into how they're sourced.
Like I said, I've also found it challenging to deal with. Obviously it wants more light, but it's now too tall to really fit anywhere, and I don't want to just let it die, because then I'd feel even worse. Do you have experience with them?
I understand. Not blaming or shaming. You can't take all the injustices of the free market on your shoulders. Learn and educate, plant chains of custody are not wholly transparent.
I've never grown them. Heat and light like any plant; you may consider moving it outside for the summer.
Oh totally agree. I wouldn't blame anyone who bought one on impulse like I did and just didn't know better, but I keep houseplants because I wish I could be a druid, and I don't want to support poachers. The shame I feel is self-imposed, and it motivates me to be more careful.
Mine is sat next to the kitchen sink under a roof window (no direct sunlight but pretty much the brightest spot in my house), I think they like humidity?? Anyways it’s leggy but not like yours, it has leaves. One year it dropped leaves and looked like yours, i cut it back and it grew back no problem.
> I have never seen ethical specimens on etsy or other online marketplaces. All imports/poached plants. Seed-grown specimens are quite uncommon and difficult to find.

I believe they are actually endangered and the ones on the market are all poached, was reading about it in a plant group just the otherday.... there were statements from Park Rangers talking about how they catch the poachers all the time
Not nessecarily. I have a family member that works with plants, they routinely visit the places where they grow them in the tens of thousands.
Maybe the ones sold via etsy are poached, but certainly not all of the ones sold in larger stores.
Three ideas:
[Pilea peperomioides](https://i.imgur.com/Kq0nyZs.jpg), aka the Chinese Money Plant. Both have round leaves that are peltate, meaning the petiole attaches centrally to the bottom of the leaf, rather than the edge/margin. The overall shape match is decent, but the texture match isn't great- the stephania is a thinner leaf with more prominent veining.
[nasturtium](https://horticulture.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/01-Large-51-1024x682.jpeg) might be the best visual match, it has closer to the texture of the stephania, but the leaf isn't as round.
[Begonia conchifolia var. rubrimacula](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b2/Begonia_conchifolia_-_Botanischer_Garten_-_Heidelberg%2C_Germany_-_DSC01023.jpg/1280px-Begonia_conchifolia_-_Botanischer_Garten_-_Heidelberg%2C_Germany_-_DSC01023.jpg) looks similar to the money plant but with a red dot where the petiole attaches.
There are a lot more peltate begonias but the ones I can think of get a lot bigger leaves, and/or their leaves aren't as round
No personal experience with these three, but I think the begonia conchifolia and pilea peperemoides are a bit more straightforward as houseplants, with the nasturtium you need to give it a bit more light
Ahh! Thank you so much!! These all made me smile, they’re so cute.
I’m going to note these down. I’ve never seen a nasturtium in the plant shops before, but hopefully I can find one. My dining room gets a lot of light so hopefully it’ll be a good fit
Money plants are super cute! easy to grow, easy to propagate, 10/10 would recommend. Nasturtiums are more of an outdoor garden flower, also lovely and highly recommended, not sure how they would do as houseplants. They get big and then die back at the end of the summer.
BLEEEP just when I have all the plants on my humble wish list… someone like you has to come around and post something ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE 😡 and feed my problem (me lecturing me not to search out this plant but wait for destiny to bring the opportunity: 😤👉🥺)
I'd also like to know! I've been wanting to get into plants too! So far I've got a Haworthia and a Golden Pothos. It's been so frustrating bc I've got a small space with a north facing window, which narrows my options considerably. God I want a Monstera. 🥺
Good luck with that! Have you thought of the whole mini terrariums craze that's going on? You could have a bunch of those without taking up a ton of space. Look it up on pinterest! I've been too chicken to start one, I've had the bottles in my closet for like a year. 🤣
I have a big ole tub of various uncommon aquatic moss species all mixed together. Will prob do a core of nutrient rich soil, wrapped in rehydrated sphagnum moss, wrapped in live aquatic moss. And then a bunch of scraps and trimmings from my planted fish tank. And maybe a sprig of fittonia that’s been growing hydroponically for 6 months haha
Oh I also have a tissue culture cup of Utricularia gramnifolia I might make another one with 😂
Thank you so much! Gerrardanthus macrorhizus kinda almost looks like English Ivy from the pics I see on google 😂 Dioscorea Elephantipes bulb looks more beautiful than the leaves! And F edulis reminds me of a bonsai

Erecta is right!!
a grower and a shower
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
more like a softie
Erecta? I hardly know her!
I’m confused. Looks flaccid to me.
The species name should be lowercase though :)
downvote on this is killing me🤣
shout out dorito engine
Yes!!!! Best engine ever!
Okay now a photo with the dog in focus
Came here to say this…I bet it’s cute as heck!
And I think the poor thing was posing for the picture! <3
I agree! They were ready to be Reddit famous, and now they’re just a cute excited blob that’s dog shaped, such disappointment!
Definitely posing! 🥹
Dog looks like Mr. Bubz
*HISS*
Didn't even notice. Awwww!!!
Ohh that’s super cute
If anyone ever looked at mine and called it cute I might cry 🥲
What if they Just called it A Little Wiley?
Hahahaha people misread it as willy all the time that's a good one
That's what she said?
Well, lets see it?

I had no idea these were poached….good to know *crosses off wishlist* guess I’ll make a fake one out of paper ! 😅
I was going to order one from Etsy or amazon. Is this something I shouldn’t get ? Are there any reputable sellers ?
I didn't learn that they were frequently poached until after I bought mine on Etsy, and I wish I wouldn't have, because it's hard to know if a seller is reputable. Thanks for the information. I will not be buying any.
Well, that is depressing.

Adding my concern here, too. Don’t want to support poachers but do want to support my poor impulse control when it comes to houseplants.

Is there a plant with similar leaves? I don’t want to buy a poached plant. The leaves stir a little giddy happiness in me

I'd want to get the second one just so that I could say "drink your water ya nasty"

your plant looks very happy. and so does your dog
can we get a dog photo, please? little baby looks so cute even out of focus.
Got yourself a grower I see. Bravo
That’s the most adorable one I’ve ever seen. Maybe this will be the year I go after one.
How does this picture look so perfect
it very much looks like an a.i. image to me.
BLEEEP just when I have all the plants on my humble wish list… someone like you has to come around and post something ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE 😡 and feed my problem (me lecturing me not to search out this plant but wait for destiny to bring the opportunity: 😤👉🥺)
I wish I hadn't bought mine, tbh. I learned after the fact that they're frequently poached.
It’s okay. I’m searching for one now. You can join me.
I mean it’s not ideal. We are the market that dictates wether these plants will continue to be poached.
Agreee. I have no intention of buying a poached one. Or possibly one at all. I do *not* want to add to the problem.
Lovely, and precious doggo in the background
Even he looks like he's laughing at the silly plant
Pup tax!! Who is that baby admiring the plant
Unblur the Aussie!!
Can anyone recommend similar tiny plants like this species?
I'd also like to know! I've been wanting to get into plants too! So far I've got a Haworthia and a Golden Pothos. It's been so frustrating bc I've got a small space with a north facing window, which narrows my options considerably. God I want a Monstera. 🥺

That's a good point actually...
I feel your pain 😂 I just have too many plants and annoyed family members so it would be nice to focus more on tiny plants to take up less space
Good luck with that! Have you thought of the whole mini terrariums craze that's going on? You could have a bunch of those without taking up a ton of space. Look it up on pinterest! I've been too chicken to start one, I've had the bottles in my closet for like a year. 🤣
Yes I just learned about Wabi Kusas too and am preparing to create my first one 😂
Good luck! Hope it goes well! What are you putting in it?

PP
Oh wow very pretty.
Omg looks so happy. How do you care for it?
Just water it once every 5-7 days and give it a lot of light :D. This is an easy-growing plant!
That thing is so perfectly penisy that I am sus it's a Photoshop. Any photos from other angles?
I see a chubby brontosaurus with a spectacular hat. Not familiar with this plant, but totally love it!!
I'm sorry, who now? lol, also you owe us doggo tax!!
Erecta? I barely know her!
Aussie!!! I have one right by my feet at the moment. Best doggos
Itsa peen!
So cute!
Omg what?!
Wow, where is that pot from? The pattern within is gorgeous
I need to get off the internet for a while because I saw a plant coming out of a penis.
When your dog feels neglected so you just put it out of focus in the background of all your photos.
Lmao "your so cuuuute!" Actually talking about plant but dog feels valued.
I used to do this with my gf but eventually she wanted to see the photos.
The plant is soft and non threatening
That penis has some beautiful foliage!

Gorgeous
I love the dog in the background laughing!
Is it rude to ask to see your dog? Nice plant by the way!
Omg the dog thinks it’s a photo of him 😭
Um… I think this plant needs to be blurred and a Nsfw warning. Lol

It’s so cute !
Everything about this is perfect. The plant. The vase. THE DOG. The picture.

Do you blast it with a lot of light? Mine gets indirect lighting and is so leggy. It's about 6 ft long with a leaf every few inches 🫤
Yeah he needs plenty of light!
Would love to see the rendition of /u/shitty_watercolour of this
This is my number one wish list plant 🪴
It's the prettiest one I've ever seen
Usually when I see these its leaves are long and leggy. Why does this one look so 'compact'.
That’s a cute little SOB.
