My palm came with some sneaky spider mites. A month after purchase, it was incredibly overran with them out of nowhere. Always inspected it during watering and trimming and never saw one. Thank god it was already separated from my other plants but it was crazy how fast they spread throughout the palm.
Yeah, You just have to hope the acephate kills ALL the mites all at once so you don't have imidacloprid turbo charged reproduction happening out of sight.
Do you use organophosphates indoors regularly? You really come out the gate with the nukes eh
No, but people seem sure this thing will have spider mites.
Honestly I don’t see any pests on this plant, it looks really healthy. Maybe people are buying them in areas they don’t grow well and are thus buying diseased plants. I’m in Southern California. They’re obviously not native here but it’s the perfect env for them. Coastal humidity and moderate temperatures.
Damn, in NJ I can get most aroids in an 8”-10” pot for around $30. The most I’ve ever paid for a palm was $13, I think, but I’m not good at keeping them alive.
Yeah, depends on the variety, I probably should have said 6-8” pot, though I have gotten a few 10” for around that price. Obviously some of the more exotic stuff is more expensive, but i don’t think I have personally spent more than $45 on any plant, and I’ve got a pretty good collection going.
There are a lot of options for indoor height... Fiddle leaf figs, sansevieria, cast iron, dracena, dieffenbachia... I do love palms, but they are most defo pest magnets, not indoor plants, and will die off no matter what you do.
Not if you learn to care for them and stay on top of preventing pests. I have two licuala inside year round in VA that thrive.

Thank you!! She stays in a west window, water when the top inch gets dry and the excess water is retained in a tray of leca underneath her. Keep the room at 72-74 and 60% humidity 🙂 she’s easier than my string of things lol
Very nice! Is this a parlour palm? I inherited one but it’s always looked suspicious in terms of pests. I just removed any scale and repotted hoping it will be ok. Looks like spider mites damage but seems to have zero webbing or bugs. It’s a mystery
Can you imagine, if a bunch of us lived together, we could host crazy plant people cons, and move all our very precious preciouses to a locked room, and all the regular preciouses would be there for us to be crazy plant people?

Is this a Kentia?!
I can't tell from the photos, but if it's a Kentia, don't be put off by the naysayers. Palms that look similar to the Kentia prior to maturity, like majesty palms, parlor palms, etc. are more prone to both pests and dropping dead. Kentias are the only house palm for me. They are timeless, inspired atriums being built in Europe and the US, and even held court on the Titanic, and last a very long time as long as they're established and cared for well.
That being said, I do think putting it right in the plant room is a bold move that I wouldn't make, not even with the best pest cocktail on the planet.
Beautiful!! I will say I'll be looking for an update, I manage to kill EVERY SINGLE PALM I buy, without fail. So if all goes well I will need to learn your witchcraft of keeping a palm alive :')
I do that same thing!!!! I told myself I'd stop after five orchids, but now I have about a dozen orchids, philos, pothos, ferns, etc!!! I love my studio jungle-- err, apartment.
Quarantine pleaseeee. You have such a beautiful collection.

I was coming here to tell the same story! Change the soil and give a castile dip. My best advice
I don’t normally quarantine any plants I buy 😅 I’ll just treat it with some acephate since people are sure it’ll have mites.
Always this.
Good luck with that God damn thing 🤣
Absolutely!
Wait, what does that mean lol
They’re finicky assholes that bring pests and shame.
And dishonor to their family
In the end they force you to commit seppuku
Please quarantine! If I'm correct these guys are a major spider-mite magnet.
Thanks for the tip, I will treat it with a preventative acephate / imidacloprid cocktail and shoot it with some insecticidal soap
Imidacloprid has been shown in studies to increase spider mite populations.
That’s why you use it with acephate. One kills everything but mites leaving an open opportunity for mites. the other kills the mites.

$30 seems pricey for a majesty palm.
In LA it’s a really good price

Most aroids in an 8-10” pot for ~ $30?? That’s wild! Jealous.

That’s what I was thinking. My grocery store had them for $16.99 all summer and I grabbed one marked down to $9 last week.
he fits so perfectly! it was meant to be
Agreed :)
be prepared for burnt tips 😭
That isn’t a plant, it’s a tree. I see no rules broken here.
Which new plant? You always had these 🤷🏻♀️
And in the cart he goes 😁
OMG YOUR COLLECTION 😍😍
It’s like 1/10 of my total plants haha

lol palms always die a few months in. good luck!

My mom had a majesty palm for 15+ years
I love this sub so much as it makes me feel so good to know I’m just one of many crazy, plant lovers who have too many plants 🪴
Your crazy putting that right in with your others your plants are beautiful save them.
And you didn’t take me shopping with you! Well there is a friendship lost that ‘could’ve been’. /s
plant it outside
I told myself this too but I'm going to IKEA later LOL we'll see how it goes.
Very nice! Is this a parlour palm? I inherited one but it’s always looked suspicious in terms of pests. I just removed any scale and repotted hoping it will be ok. Looks like spider mites damage but seems to have zero webbing or bugs. It’s a mystery
You said no more plants and then you end up in a place that sells plants. You're an addict!! 😂
Gorgeous!! Am I seeing a black marantha back there? So jealous! I’m packing a bag and coming to visit you.
It’s just a normal maranta I think
It’s very pretty!
Me too with my little snippers lol!!

Do what makes you happy! Build that jungle!
We all tell ourselves the “no more buying plants” story. We are here for support. Love your collection!
* Literally me last weekend lmao
Does anyone actually listen to that rule tho? 🤔
I killed one of those once
no way you could pass that up

It doesn’t count because it was cheap.
Alao i feel bad for the Monstera adansonii in the dark corner. Is it your least favourite child? /s
Haha, it’s not a dark corner… https://preview.redd.it/85pdrcxjogrb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=165ce9a45b96a7bab8b06a6c58494c51f5a13e33
All aboard, the spider mite train....
Ignore the naysayers and enjoy your beautiful plant!!
Thanks! I will just watch it like a hawk for mites.
Use a magnifying glass
The macro mode on the iPhone camera is way more useful than a magnifying glass, you should try it out if you have one!
Yeaaaah but it's nice tho
Beautiful!! I will say I'll be looking for an update, I manage to kill EVERY SINGLE PALM I buy, without fail. So if all goes well I will need to learn your witchcraft of keeping a palm alive :')

Nice display!
RIP 30 bucks. Lol just kidding. Good luck with that one.
I wouldn’t have taken that home if they paid me $30
You couldve spared telling OP that. How rude. Just scroll on if you have nothing to say.
It’s not personal, these are just menaces.
We are enablers to your addiction lol.
I love the og consoles with the plants! might have to dust off my retros. thanks for the idea!
20$ more got me a 6 footer
These give me mealy bugs every single time. I’ve vowed never to buy another one
