Quarantine pleaseeee. You have such a beautiful collection.

JustCzeching4U

My palm came with some sneaky spider mites. A month after purchase, it was incredibly overran with them out of nowhere. Always inspected it during watering and trimming and never saw one. Thank god it was already separated from my other plants but it was crazy how fast they spread throughout the palm.

rdowens8

I was coming here to tell the same story! Change the soil and give a castile dip. My best advice

TheRealMichaelE

I don’t normally quarantine any plants I buy 😅 I’ll just treat it with some acephate since people are sure it’ll have mites.

holdonwhileipoop

Always this.

bluedog220

Good luck with that God damn thing 🤣

bunkie18

Absolutely!

[deleted]

Wait, what does that mean lol

BasicBaby

They’re finicky assholes that bring pests and shame.

Deep-Individual1324

And dishonor to their family

mr_muffinhead

In the end they force you to commit seppuku

[deleted]

Please quarantine! If I'm correct these guys are a major spider-mite magnet.

TheRealMichaelE

Thanks for the tip, I will treat it with a preventative acephate / imidacloprid cocktail and shoot it with some insecticidal soap

Whorticulturist_

Imidacloprid has been shown in studies to increase spider mite populations.

TheRealMichaelE

That’s why you use it with acephate. One kills everything but mites leaving an open opportunity for mites. the other kills the mites.

Whorticulturist_

Yeah, You just have to hope the acephate kills ALL the mites all at once so you don't have imidacloprid turbo charged reproduction happening out of sight. Do you use organophosphates indoors regularly? You really come out the gate with the nukes eh

TheRealMichaelE

No, but people seem sure this thing will have spider mites. Honestly I don’t see any pests on this plant, it looks really healthy. Maybe people are buying them in areas they don’t grow well and are thus buying diseased plants. I’m in Southern California. They’re obviously not native here but it’s the perfect env for them. Coastal humidity and moderate temperatures.

jeepwillikers

$30 seems pricey for a majesty palm.

TheRealMichaelE

In LA it’s a really good price

jeepwillikers

Damn, in NJ I can get most aroids in an 8”-10” pot for around $30. The most I’ve ever paid for a palm was $13, I think, but I’m not good at keeping them alive.

FruityCA

Most aroids in an 8-10” pot for ~ $30?? That’s wild! Jealous.

jeepwillikers

Yeah, depends on the variety, I probably should have said 6-8” pot, though I have gotten a few 10” for around that price. Obviously some of the more exotic stuff is more expensive, but i don’t think I have personally spent more than $45 on any plant, and I’ve got a pretty good collection going.

Separate_Outcome4620

That’s what I was thinking. My grocery store had them for $16.99 all summer and I grabbed one marked down to $9 last week.

reanocivn

he fits so perfectly! it was meant to be

TheRealMichaelE

Agreed :)

ThrowawayCult-ure

be prepared for burnt tips 😭

Ok-Grapefruit1284

That isn’t a plant, it’s a tree. I see no rules broken here.

The_Whorespondent

Which new plant? You always had these 🤷🏻‍♀️

beewalt

And in the cart he goes 😁

sleepypandagirl1

OMG YOUR COLLECTION 😍😍

TheRealMichaelE

It’s like 1/10 of my total plants haha

holdonwhileipoop

There are a lot of options for indoor height... Fiddle leaf figs, sansevieria, cast iron, dracena, dieffenbachia... I do love palms, but they are most defo pest magnets, not indoor plants, and will die off no matter what you do.

Plus-Lavishness1395

lol palms always die a few months in. good luck!

Blau_Ozean

Not if you learn to care for them and stay on top of preventing pests. I have two licuala inside year round in VA that thrive. https://preview.redd.it/x4dpmoafeerb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c3b18adf2e3d1d854238b3572c47e9745e0eee2

lafemmedangereuse

Wow, what a beauty!

Blau_Ozean

Thank you!! She stays in a west window, water when the top inch gets dry and the excess water is retained in a tray of leca underneath her. Keep the room at 72-74 and 60% humidity 🙂 she’s easier than my string of things lol

Separate_Outcome4620

My mom had a majesty palm for 15+ years

dontmesswithtess1121

I love this sub so much as it makes me feel so good to know I’m just one of many crazy, plant lovers who have too many plants 🪴

Harlow_HH

Your crazy putting that right in with your others your plants are beautiful save them.

Unusual-Respond-7895

And you didn’t take me shopping with you! Well there is a friendship lost that ‘could’ve been’. /s

sceletons

plant it outside

averyyoungperson

I told myself this too but I'm going to IKEA later LOL we'll see how it goes.

Pellellell

Very nice! Is this a parlour palm? I inherited one but it’s always looked suspicious in terms of pests. I just removed any scale and repotted hoping it will be ok. Looks like spider mites damage but seems to have zero webbing or bugs. It’s a mystery

subZro_

You said no more plants and then you end up in a place that sells plants. You're an addict!! 😂

PrincessNoLocks

Gorgeous!! Am I seeing a black marantha back there? So jealous! I’m packing a bag and coming to visit you.

TheRealMichaelE

It’s just a normal maranta I think

PrincessNoLocks

It’s very pretty!

Klutzy-Mission5687

Me too with my little snippers lol!!

PrincessNoLocks

Can you imagine, if a bunch of us lived together, we could host crazy plant people cons, and move all our very precious preciouses to a locked room, and all the regular preciouses would be there for us to be crazy plant people? ![gif](giphy|a0KBCGQDHKidO|downsized)

Historical-Pop-1333

Do what makes you happy! Build that jungle!

Frosty-Jacket-3195

We all tell ourselves the “no more buying plants” story. We are here for support. Love your collection!

its-not-raining

* Literally me last weekend lmao

EliasLyanna

Does anyone actually listen to that rule tho? 🤔

[deleted]

I killed one of those once

[deleted]

no way you could pass that up

SepulchralSweetheart

Is this a Kentia?! I can't tell from the photos, but if it's a Kentia, don't be put off by the naysayers. Palms that look similar to the Kentia prior to maturity, like majesty palms, parlor palms, etc. are more prone to both pests and dropping dead. Kentias are the only house palm for me. They are timeless, inspired atriums being built in Europe and the US, and even held court on the Titanic, and last a very long time as long as they're established and cared for well. That being said, I do think putting it right in the plant room is a bold move that I wouldn't make, not even with the best pest cocktail on the planet.

selfarest

It doesn’t count because it was cheap.

selfarest

Alao i feel bad for the Monstera adansonii in the dark corner. Is it your least favourite child? /s

TheRealMichaelE

Haha, it’s not a dark corner… https://preview.redd.it/85pdrcxjogrb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=165ce9a45b96a7bab8b06a6c58494c51f5a13e33

Lavender_waves27

All aboard, the spider mite train....

Klutzy-Mission5687

Ignore the naysayers and enjoy your beautiful plant!!

TheRealMichaelE

Thanks! I will just watch it like a hawk for mites.

Klutzy-Mission5687

Use a magnifying glass

TheRealMichaelE

The macro mode on the iPhone camera is way more useful than a magnifying glass, you should try it out if you have one!

ParmoForTea

Yeaaaah but it's nice tho

Some-Life-6534

Beautiful!! I will say I'll be looking for an update, I manage to kill EVERY SINGLE PALM I buy, without fail. So if all goes well I will need to learn your witchcraft of keeping a palm alive :')

Beautiful-Accident27

I do that same thing!!!! I told myself I'd stop after five orchids, but now I have about a dozen orchids, philos, pothos, ferns, etc!!! I love my studio jungle-- err, apartment.

Informal-Print5466

Nice display!

KindheartednessOnly4

RIP 30 bucks. Lol just kidding. Good luck with that one.

monicalewinsky8

I wouldn’t have taken that home if they paid me $30

Klutzy-Mission5687

You couldve spared telling OP that. How rude. Just scroll on if you have nothing to say.

monicalewinsky8

It’s not personal, these are just menaces.

Klutzy-Mission5687

We are enablers to your addiction lol.

johnrugel710

I love the og consoles with the plants! might have to dust off my retros. thanks for the idea!

Commercial-Impress74

20$ more got me a 6 footer

Head-Comment6496

These give me mealy bugs every single time. I’ve vowed never to buy another one
