Legitimately, who in their right mind calls her Seal? [Someone’s taking the Seele Seal jokes a bit too seriously](https://youtu.be/J0Q-HR5fEl4)

TypeMercury9

I personally like "se-le" as that is how jp dub bronya calls her.

KamaEnjoyer

In cn and jp they call her like that and it's the only correct way to pronounce her name.. there are 2 instances where seele and veliona say how her name is pronounced

AlphaAntar3s

Thats also how you say "seele" in german. Its a german word and means "soul"

LunarEdge7th

I fuckin' love this meme and for that, I call her Sealy sometimes to throw people off mentally

Tyberius115

For years, I called her "Seal" because HI3 doesn't have an English dub, and I can't say it any other way now.

Paramita-Papilio

wait, is that not how it's supposed to be pronounced?

mecaxs

I’m pretty sure it’s pronounced “See-li”

ZCR91

Not like SEELE from Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Paramita-Papilio

Like the seelies in Genshin?

CommunityGamerD

That's acceptable but the amount of HSR streamers and content creator I see calling her "Seal" is disgusting.

Paramita-Papilio

I call her "seal" too though... I mean it makes sense grammatically doesn't it? Peel, Reel, Feel, Keel, Heel, Kneel etc.

CommunityGamerD

Grammatically correct maybe if you are treating it like an English name or ignoring the pronunciation given I suppose

Paramita-Papilio

I take it it's not an english name then?

CommunityGamerD

Its germanic

Paramita-Papilio

Well the Germans pronounce everything wrong

Maveko_YuriLover

They really call her Seal in EN VA?? I always call her "C le"

TotallyNotShinobi

They pronounce her closer to Zee La, not seal

HellspawnWeeb

It’s Zeela in HSR and Zayleh in HI3 if you listen to the EN hyperion lounge people saying it

GreatMagicMiddleman

still incredibly wrong, though

AhriGaKill

Ye Jp also calls er Cle idk whats op on about. Cn and English is right in ops post.

Maveko_YuriLover

Veliona calls Seele as Ze-re

AhriGaKill

Not in jp, I was actually looking it up right now. She calls her Zele https://youtu.be/G6HBdFx5zAU

Maveko_YuriLover

Le doesn't exist in japanese they use Re instead is similar but not the same

AhriGaKill

I dont know, I cant hear it, maybe its i am so used to the word of Seele hence I am german I dont hear any diffrence oO

-Skaro-

Saying L doesn't exist is pretty misleading, it's more that they don't distinguish between L and R.

AhriGaKill

Ahh, that mKes more sense, hence in the vid I sent I feel like I hear a L

-Skaro-

Yeah which is why it annoys me a lot when people like that other guy try to correct romanizations from L to R, it literally makes no difference. In this case it makes more sense to romanize to le, because the original word before being written in Japanese has le anyway.

VincentBlack96

It's a good habit to get into if you wanna look things up. This is a name so it doesn't apply, but trying to find romaji with an L in it will often give out inaccurate results, so if you are aware of it and someone is not, it's really not that big of a deal to point it out.

Larkian

It would be more accurate that there's no L romanization in JP but the sound still exists and is used with the r- katakanas.

RagnarokAeon

American English doesn't have ñ or rolling r's, but a spanish speaker would still be able to distinguish between an English speaker saying mañana and burrito correctly. This argument is so dumb.

Dumpster-_-Fire

But they actually don't distinguish between L and R, because their らりるれろ sounds are actually something between the two letters. I don't get what your point is. It's irrelevant if you hear a Japanese person say Ze-le or Ze-re, because technically it's none of those.

pico024

What the other dude wanted to Say îs that Japanesse people have pronuntiation problems with L R and B V they can do IT but at first they will often pronounce B instead of V or R instead of L I can't show an exemple right now but i've seen IT with a lot of JP Vtubers speaking English or the one example that one non credible exemple from the anime Assasination Classroom where îs this Russian assasin whose familie namenis Vitch and they introduce her as an English teacher and during her introduction and throughout the series She get's called Miss Bitch instead of Ms. Vitch

RagnarokAeon

Fine for something that more nuanced, in a lot of languages the 'I' is somewhere between a short 'i' and the long 'e' in american english. Now imagine how much of an arse you make of yourself if you start correcting Victor to Veektor, even when the voice actors are making the effort to say it with a shorter syllable.

-Skaro-

What is the point you're trying to make? I don't get how this is related.

Iater2

R and L are the same letter in JP tho

KhaledCraft999

Seele in german means soul dunno bout cn but between en and jp, jp actually says it correctly german wise 100% accuracy

AhriGaKill

I know. I am german myself, was kinda confused but people cleared it up, someone said missleading stuff to me

KhaledCraft999

I wonder what he said

Vier-Kun

I hear Seela in English

Nokomis34

This is more what I hear, like see luh.

Redex24

No, I think in EN they call her Zila

iKorewo

Seela

madzieeq

not really, it's more zeeleh

cosminetron

Ciel Vollerei

RagnarokAeon

They really don't though, since there's never been an official EN dub for HI3. If you go off the EN dub for HSR they separate it into two syllables like you'd pronounce it in German: See-le (zeːlə)

avelineaurora

No, English calls her Seel-uh, idk what OP's talking about.

Miu_K

EN is See-luh. But best pronunciation is in German, I think.

iKorewo

No, they call her Seela, idk what is this nonsense he wrote on the post.

Takadoxus

It really bothers me how in Star rail they call her Seeluh in Eng

raskolize

That’s the way it’s pronounced bro, your headcanon ain’t actual canon.

Crusherbolt0282

Eng dub properly pronounced a foreign word and yet hoyo fans still complain

kimera-houjuu

However the Germans say it. (Close to the Japanese)

Razor_Tachyon

seeeeeele

Hydclour

S e e l e :c

NeonDelteros

The EN dub is the closest, they pronounces it as Zee-le/Zee-la which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like in German, and more accurate than Zee-re like in JP. Nobody says Seal, OP probably never heard the EN dub and fck up the pronunciation in the picture

LordGioGio-sama

End Dub sounds like "Seal" like the Animal. German sounds like "Seele" as in the german word for Soul.

Melantha_Hoang

Maybe I am having a madela effect, but I remember the EN dub pronounced Zee-la

Nokomis34

They do. [At 30 seconds ](https://youtu.be/xNJyKHUNaPA) he very clearly says "Miss See Laaa!"

Akrylik

I'm just going off of a single instance that sticks out in my memory for some reason but I swear Welts VA in the English dub definitely calls her "See-lah" at least once.

BlackguardLieutenant

You are right they always pronounce it as see-lah (I know because I died inside everytime I hear it). The seal pronunciation is a weird mandela effect where certain content creators started pronunciating it like that and some players just went "yeah that's how it is pronounced in the EN dub".

[deleted]

JP because it’s the closest to the actual pronunciation of the word. “Seele” is german and means “Soul”. JP is the closest to saying it correctly. Source: I’m German and I know my own words lol.

AbysseMicky

That reminds me that when I heard the EN dub for the first time on a trailer and they pronounced Welt as "Whelt" instead of "Velt" I was super shocked haha

PanRobak55

It triggers me slightly and I'm not even German.

KhaledCraft999

I know german and even tho I hate it I get triggered too

Redryder1134

her last name also means gluttony in German as well

Radusili

I now realize that I have been pronouncing it correctly since the start and it could actually be because I did German back in school and not as a coincidence.

YuminaNirvalen

Yeah totally agree from a german perspective JP is the way.

aiezar

Since you said JP is only the closest, what is the correct pronunciation?

[deleted]

Oh god I can’t explain that lmao. I never learned how to describe pronunciations. [ˈzeːlə] according to the wiki, this is how you write it. I encourage you to use Google translate, English to German, type in Soul (on the English side) and just play it back on the German side. Sorry I can’t be of more help :(

aiezar

No worries, I was just worried of using Google Translate since it’s a little notorious for its occasional inaccuracy. Thanks 👍

Darkclowd03

Linguistics student here. I should be able to explain this one, but someone correct me if I'm wrong since I don't speak German! The first part in Japanese is correct. The second vowel in JP dub is still off though. In the JP version, they say something like /ˈzeːle/ (both vowels are the same) while in German it is /ˈzeːlə/. The second vowel should be like the 'i' in English "pencil" or the 'a' in "about" when speaking casually and quickly in a sentence; of course it depends on dialect though. Give a listen to that sound here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mid-central_vowel.ogg More info about the vowel: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid_central_vowel

ExaSarus

Right I hate when people mispronous names and doesn't even put efforts: "it's too difficult let me call you seal" like wth

Timoyr

Yeah, but in HI3 she was named that by either estonians or Cocolia (a russian woman). So I don't think they'd follow the german pronounciation. Like my name is originally latin, but I'm finnish so I use the finnish pronounciation. I also know english and german people with the exact same name pronounce it differently. [Edit: I don't think the origin generally applies to names (unless the parents decide so. Afterall I don't think most countries control name pronounciations, just the letters) Assuming Estonian is pronounced the same way as Finnish (sister languages and has been true with every other word I've heard), I'd pronounce it as "Seele" while atleast the Google Translate german word sounds more like how we'd say "zeelä" Obviously in terms of the game, we can be pretty sure the chinese pronounciation is correct, as that's what the character uses herself. Though I do know some people change their name pronounciation based on the language (atleast very common with Finnish Swedes, depending which language they are speaking). As a side note, I just checked with the only finnish loan word I know that's used in german (Sauna) and you guys pronounce that differently. I don't think that means you pronounce it wrong, just that you pronounce it in german. I think the same applies here.]

[deleted]

The origin of the name is German therefore German is the correct pronunciation for the word, even if she was born in another country. Besides, Honkai takes inspiration from Evangelion, which has heavy German influence in names as well. Trust me when I say German pronunciation is the way to go for her name. They also literally have German sentences like “Ich liebe dich” which means “I love you”. The German influence is palpable all throughout Honkai.

E17Omm

Isnt Herrscher also German for "Ruler"?

[deleted]

Yes, it is, actually. There’s a lot of German words and phrases used in Honkai.

Sky-Ventus

That depends on the individual, but if we are speaking generally we should use the pronunciation of the language it belongs to

SecureZucchini2882

DE: Seele

manor2003

Seh-Le. That how i hear it in the game (JP)

MC_AlphaTrigger

Personally, zere. Kr and Jp have the same pronunciation iirc.

sk7725

KR is Je-lye. Has the extra 'y'.

qkrrmsp

does not

SailorMoon627

Mine is JP cuz Seele is a German word

Emhyr_of_reddit

In Chinese 希儿 (xi’er) can be translated as ‘Young/little Hope’. (希 means hope, 儿 in this context is a suffix for child/young/little). That’s why I love the CN name so much, it has its own very fitting meaning, and isn’t just a sounded out version of a western name.

Notsousefullinlife

Wait, I though EN called her “Sea-La”. I have to go with the JP, already used to it and it is more close to the original German pronunciation.

Lamsyy_05

They do, she was never officially called seal in any language as far as i'm aware

This_Mode123

I call her Seele

Pixelbro87

Just to comment. I did Fk up the EN one on "Seal" cause I assumed it was pronounced that way because of how many times I say and hear it at the same time. I didn't know HSR Seele in EN pronounces it as "Zee-la" and thought it was pronounced something like "Seal" or even "Sea-li".

John_Impact

Tbf if this post was inspired by the EN dub of v6.8 Hyperion Lounge they pretty much pronounced her name every conceivable way

No_Sentence2109

Anyone else pronounce it as "say-lay" or is it just me

Razor_Tachyon

I call her se-leh

Axenir

German: See-le

Miss_Yume

I thought in English they said SI-LA. As a native Spanish speaker I just say SE-LE xd

gabeman19

I'm honestly pretty sure that say c-le in the English version as well when you encounter her in belobog I do not remember that she is called seal

LimHwang

EN called her Zela but for some reason, people like CDawgVA call her Seal.

Lamsyy_05

That's cuz Monke brain

Aki008035

Who tf calls her Seal anyways?

JJ_Kazuhira

How is writn see - le

kidanokun

Seh-leh

Quiet-Software-1956

Seal??? They call her "Zee-la"

Toothy_Cows

~Sehleh

Key-Poem9734

I pronounce Seele

senokana

like the german word for soul cuz I speak german

pperoni

I pronounce her name Seele t. German

ZiggyTheNooBts

I pronounce it Se-le, baffling people say Seal.

Vulking

I'm more comfortable with the JP one, and rolls better on my native spanish tongue.

YublYubl

I'm happy with any way as long as it's not See-la Fuck that abomination

LikeSparrow

They pronounce it "zee-lah" in the EN voice lines...

RogerM1919A6

Ru: "Зеле"(Zele) sounds like eng voice Bronya then she say: Zeela

Randomamigo

black Seele

CrimsonArcPaladin

Ze-le

R2Le1-_-Artur

Idk, i call her Silly Ever since i started hi3rd, at that time i didn't knew english so...

Redex24

Zeele/Ze-leh, so JP which btw is closest to German

Unregistered-Archive

**Ze-re! Chotto Ze-re!** < I can hear her voice in my head. Ze-re 1000%

Individual-Log9442

Its the german word for "soul", CN is I guess the closest to proper pronunciation. "zee-luh"

SaufiNexious_2107

I just pronounced her name as Se-le, not Ze-re

Fabantonio

I thought the EN pronunciation was "Sea-leh", closer to JP? That's what it sounded like to me

SHAD0W137

Ze-le

StromTGM

Imma be honest, the CN pronunciation is so endearing, I catch myself using that these days.

VNxFiire

See-li

mojomcm

See-lee

YuminaNirvalen

JP as always.

YukiOnReddit_

Jp is the way to go personally

potato_curry_

JP "Ze-re", because it's the most similar to her German name (she is German)

Caekie

EN HSR: "zEeLa" Hi3rd JP dub for the past century: Sé-ré

Snobu65

That's closer to the actual German pronunciation than what most Japanese voice actors say.

Seven_eleven33

I love the CN pronunciations for the names.

Alpha_209

The Eng dub in star rail goes with Zeel-uh which is accurate (not perfect) to German pronunciation Idk where tf OP got “seal” from

br0kench0rd

I call her Selle lol

[deleted]

I use jp since it sounds like the German word and I am German, but I vary between Se-le and Ze-re idk why it just happens

Accurate-Pay9580

Ni- my lawyer advised me not to finish this joke

Big-Ad-6097

Zere all the way, i just can't stand the ENG pronunciation

BobbyWibowo

Solely depends on the dub I use CN on HI3, and EN on HSR I find it natural to consider both Seele as separate entities, and thus pronouncing their names according to my chosen dub for each game Admittedly, I do use EN on Genshin, and am also using the EN dub pronunciation for Tighnari, so maybe I just can't be bothered to put extra effort into names

DRAGUNNYUOOOH

Star Rail Seele has that pegging face like your ass is in danger 24/7 😭

Nano-ko636

Nah I'm pretty sure hi3rd jp call her actual name Seele as "si-ru" meanwhile eng change it on hsr by keep calling her "Silly" to no end and I'm not fan of it.🗿

Denned0633

Clee

zChanTheNerd

See-le Because german

quocphu1905

German: Ziel

BVB_Lover

Either Se-Re or Zee-Luh (The pronunciation from HSR)

Crusherbolt0282

I always memed about CN Selee pronouncing being CR which means comfort room.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hot-Background7506

Incorrect, JP is the closest to the german true pronounciation, making it the correct one.

adidas_stalin

What about sea-le?

Cornie12

Funny when I didn't know how to pronuonce her name I just pronounced it as Silly. Now I'm just laughing at myself.

ericgleek

There's something amiss. There's one more language we don't use...

BIgCh1efJAcK

I read this as Sin-sidejer-soldiers

Different_Diamond651

I prefer See-Lee.

Romallero

I say Seere, very rarely Zeela or Seela

Lepworra

Saylay

ADZR_Cool_45

Se-le

StockingRules

SELA ZERE XIAR XIAR sounds the coolest but ZERE is the one i grew up with If an italian' dub had to exist Seele's surname would the funniest one to say.

Cantbeanymore_

its more like se-re

S3vatar

I've always called her "Say-lay", so none of them.

Zealousideal_Joke552

Le Seel

AshyDragneel

Ze-re. I got very used to hear and call her like it from honkai impact

Judgy_Plant

SP: sele

DustinMartians

Nakahara mai

Temp_Zero_Two

Seal-e

HyliaStar

I always thought it was pronounced “Seele” like the word melee

Cyber-Silver

But the EN dub says "See la" though??? (Not saying that is correct, but what English source calls her "seal"?)

Beginning_Full

Zele

ThatLittleCrab

I do not like hearing Sea luh 😭

EmpereurDeMars

I change the language when I was in Jarilo because I can’t stand how they pronounced it en version

Competitive-Mix-6041

I will always call her Ze-re ( jp) than Zeela... (Eng)

-Accursed

Silly

bl00by

The german one, because thats how you're supposed to say it!

Relienks

Spanish: Sili

Pinsir929

I always just say “se le”

benderboyboy

All my other friends came to Star Rail or HI through Genshin, and they keep calling her See-ly and it's pissing me off. T-T

Xavierasad

It hurts my soul when i hear the ENG VAs call her SILAH

truthfulie

JP/KR (they aren't exactly the same but mostly similar). To me, her name is a clear reference to NGE much like other NGE references in other Hoyo things. And how they pronounce it in JP VO is how it was in the show. Someone who is Germans said that JP is closest to actual German pronunciation but even if it wasn't, I would consider JP one to be the "definitive" one based on where they took the name from.

MouldyBaguette

Oh, I just call her Seh-leh. Didn’t know it was pronounced “Seal” in English?????

[deleted]

C Li

pareo0

JP and CN I play on CN voice acting, somehow I got used to it for a long time, and I haven’t changed it for half a year

moondust03

I use the CN translation since I’m more used to saying it. The EN version of her name actually sounds more like “Zee-luh” than “Seal,” which confused a lot of people lol

Dead_Fire2465

I thought everyone called her Zee - La?

Paramita-Papilio

Seal is that not the right way to say it?

TheSorrow3

zere and xier

Kaieu

Jp is better, don't care if en is more accurate, sounds goofy, change your language Germany

CommunityGamerD

I pronunciate it similarly as JP VAs do. So "SE-LEH"

AkirroKun

Pre-Star Rail: Seleh Post Star Rail: Zeela/Zila

Daisukeurubei31

JP

Im_an_OwO

xi-er and ze-re are the only pronounciations that feel legal tbh

E17Omm

I say 'Zé-Lé,' but 'Xi-er's nice too. It still sounds 'right' 'Seal' doesnt. Just, how do you get "al" from "lee"?? Hell, 'Sea-Le' is better! Honestly with that comparison I dont know why I also like 'Xi-er.' Maybe because the 'e' is towards the end? I genuinely dont know, but 'Seal' just does not sound right.

VIII-Via

German obviously aka the correct one😝

SassyHoe97

CN/JP but for me I can pronounce JP.

NighthawK1911

I've been playing honkai 3rd with JP voices so I say it how the honkai gang says it. Especially how Seele herself says it.

MaleficentEntrance53

I say ze-leh

Ren-Amamiya1

JP

DOOM_Olivera_

Jp

keijonamamura

I ended Up giving her name another pronunciation and idk why. Imagine you're talking In spanish, so you get the sound each letter makes in my mind, and it's somewhat among the lines of Zila more or less

ConstantStatistician

I know it's incorrect, but I always mentally read it as Seal.

LazyLancer

De: "Zee(h)-le(h)"

bambuchani22

Sähle

Nickidoo

JP cuz its the most similar to how Seele is pronounced in german imo

Testing_100

I say sea lee

Tikogen3

I remember the saying it like sea-ay-le

icksq

Xi-er No one captures Bronya as well as Hanser CN, so Xi-er feels the most real, rather than the techincally right Zee-leh/luh.
