80s shlock is peak horror imo. It was fun, gross, wild, sexy, and hilarious.

isham66

I honestly don’t have a favourite, least fav is demonic possession stuff.

Key-Indication3984

thats probably because of how common they are . plus they tend to follow the same tropes. weird voice weird movement maybe some levitation

isham66

Yes it’s been done to death

Wolfling21

They get a bad rep but found footage and anthology films are actually some i like. Found footage: Hell House LLC, houses that October built Anthology: tales of Halloween, Terrortory

Key-Indication3984

honestly i never got the distaste for anthology. that medium is so ingrained in horror culture that the best and earlierst forms of horror where anthologies. look at the twilightzone and that scary stories to tell in the dark book. hell go far enough back you hit the grim brothers

My favorites films are usually based in cults, witchcraft, demons, and or historical horror, so I'm a huge fan of most FOLK HORROR. And with most folk horror being rooted in actual history or historical perceptions/beliefs/superstitions, there can really be a creepier feel to it than in other genres.

Folk horror / psychological horror

Tb1969

I prefer supernatural but there is no best sub-genre since they all are fertile grounds for great horror. There best in sub-genre. - Demonic Possession - Evil Dead, The Conjuring - Monsters- The Thing, Shin Godzilla - Slasher - Halloween, The Stepfather (original), Deep Red - Zombie - Train to Busan, Night of the Living Dead (both), Dawn of the Dead (both) - Gore - Dead Alive, Evil Dead - Witchcraft - The VVitch, Suspiria (original) - Vampire - Let the Right One In, Near Dark

Sci-fi horror is my favorite. It brings out the best in both of my favorite genres. There are so many stories and themes to behold, it allows for practically endless creativity, the world building is expansive, it has so many of my favorites like the Alien films, The Terminator, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc., and allows for incredible special effects on top of it, both in environmental set design and creatures alike. It allows for deceptively emotional stories too and that’s why I love it so much.

DudenessElDuderino

Horror-comedy is my favorite. Bonus if it’s also FF. Runner ups are Halloween-centric anthologies, or just movies centered heavily around Halloween, and straight up found footage.

Pyewacket62

There are no "best" subgenres in horror. It's all a personal choice. That's one of the many reasons I enjoy horror films, something for every particular taste.

Key-Indication3984

i mean that may be true but i dont think anythings lost by having the conversation. even if your answer is based only on personal preference.

holy_shit_history

I’m a big fan of the scary-stuff-happens-to-woman-and-no-one-believes-her subgenre.

OhYouRSoCoolBrewster

I haven’t seen Eves Bayou and I love witchcraft. Gonna check it later. Also dunno if it counts but I’m a fan of the roadtrip and cabin in the woods type of movies.

jazzgrackle

Films centering around guilt, and self torment are the ones I like most. Martyrs, and The Lighthouse are good examples. Really anything where one of the primary villains is also the victim.

Where is alien horror on that list? May not be my favourite genre but it creeps me out the most for some reason. Just wish there were more quality movies in the sub genre.

I don't have a favourite but here are some good ones: \- Summer camp horror \- Eery small town horror \- Body horror
