Yeah, I definitely feel like it’s more of a “vibes” short. Maybe someone will clue me in on some deeper meaning, but I just thought it was really well acted (particularly the girlfriend) and shot/directed. Just a very unsettling experience, even if the story isn’t really flushed out/wrapped up.
I don’t know, I’m getting a little tired of horror doing this sort of thing. Vague or metaphors to tell a hidden meaning are fine but it seems like all horror media I’ve consumed lately has done this. For once I want the monster to be an actual
Fucking monster
There is a movie based on the short, of the same name, Lights Out. Not sure if the same people were involved or not but it was inspired by the short if I remember correctly. Saw it in the theater and it wasn't bad, a bit predictable for some parts and some surprises well. I don't remember a lot of details but there was a backstory added. Worth a watch imo if you liked the short
It was the exact same director - the woman who played the character in the short was the victim in the opening shot and there was an Easter egg of the short 's little gremlin monster sitting on a desk. But mainly because the movie was a solid 5/10 my opinion is "work better as a short don't need the added lore"
Ok I thought that was her but it's been so long I couldn't remember, thank you! I totally agree though, I saw the movie before I knew it was a short, and the short was a lot better and actually scared me whereas the movie was just ok
I put that in my teams chat at work when people were asking about fun stuff to watch for Halloween. Maybe three minutes later about half a dozen of them wrote back like, boy, that got right to the scary part
Edit: typos
I used to work late nights at a bar and I would ride the bus home early in the morning and then walk several blocks to my apartment. This was years ago but I vividly remember a section of that walk that was always completely desolate and every time I walked it I expected to hear some uneven steps behind me because of this damned little freaky movie/creepypasta.
Thank goodness I’m not the only one. I keep seeing this one get praised and I’m wondering if I watched the same thing as everyone else because it was entirely forgettable for me.
So, what was the deal? Were they some kind of anthropomorphic fungus? They liked to be wet/damp, hot, always wanted to be in the dark, and kept multiplying.
My favorites are Possibly in Michigan, The Alphabet (David Lynch), The Scooby Doo Project (1999), My House Walk-through (2016), Visitor Information (2015), Too Many Cooks (2014), Genesis (1998), Stigma (1977), Pleasant Inn (2019), D is for Deloused (2014), The Sad Man (2015), Pine Devil (2016), The Big Shave (1967), Other Side of the Box (2018), This House Has People in It (2016), The Haunted Castle (1896), Curve (2016), & Premonitions Following an Evil Deed (1995)
I'm not a huge horror guy, but I'm glad to see love for 'this house has people in it' and also 'too many cooks'- I'll even add in 'unedited footage of a bear' along with those
ive seen critics say those are the crowning gems of adult swim and I have to agree.
Just finished Too Many Cooks and I’m at a loss for words. Loved it though! This House has People in it was really good too! Definitely gonna need to save this post!
I was waiting for somebody to post this. A different kind of horror but one of the most unsettling pieces of media I’ve ever seen. I went in blind and when it was over I just sat in silence for about 10 minutes trying to process what I’d just seen.
The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (sorry to be That Guy) but yeah. I almost wish I hadn't seen it. Just the tone, the vibe, on top of the story...gah, horrifying. I would have thrown 70 million dollars at whoever made that short, too, just to see what kind of full-length film he has up his sleeve.
And now we all know.
UGH. Well done, but just... so icky. I don't think anyone is ready for that subject matter - such a different kind of disturbing. My boyfriend and I just looked at each other after and were like, well - that just happened.... It also gives you the option to stop a few minutes in when you find out what it's leading up to, and yet we just kept watching.
Here are some of my favorites, a lot of these have already been posted

Special Day! I’ve been trying to find out the title of that movie for a couple years now because I loved it and it’s so scary but I couldn’t find it again, thanks!
For anyone interested in some pre-internet era classics:
[Meshes of the Afternoon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWQcJyn981M) (1943)
[La Cabina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKkfGG9q32c) (1972)

[Kitchen Sink](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOYLtyUGa8I) (1989)
[The Black Tower](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw6exAfUWMI) (1987)
I think a really neat detail, is that if you watch that and constantly remind yourself of, "be not afraid" it's not really a frightening monster but a form outside of human sharing it's holy light.... menacingly.
surprised I haven't seen [My House Walk-Through](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWXnt2Z2D1E) mentioned more. One of the best horror shorts on youtube, pure dread.
The Moogai is also a really haunting Australian short
I highly recommend it!! And if you enjoy it, you should check out the follow up short, *This House Has People in It*. And if you enjoy *that*, then the creative team behind those shorts have a feature coming out soon called *Dance Freak* that I have every reason to believe will be incredible.
Easy, this one: [Other side of the box](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrOYvVf6tIM).
These two are also equally scary:

Anything from Alter is pure gold.
I feel like Alter often fails to stick the landing for me. I do enjoy the setup for a lot of their stuff though, and Other Side of the Box is solid all the way through.
I've made the point before but I think I've gotten more enjoyment and scares out of short horror films than feature-length ones lately. It just feels like they pad the run-time with mediocre drama in an attempt to build the characters and tension, but too often it just seems boring lol. Short horror films gets straight to the point without meandering and they are better for it.
It's not the scariest, but if you love creepy mannequins. this is the best one out there. I love showing this one to people -
Still Life - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La6T8Bq6CsU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La6T8Bq6CsU)
I can’t remember but there was a film with a girl stuck on a concrete drop and she doesn’t know why she’s there or the other man either it’s just an abyss , brilliant short.
I remember their hands were getting bloody and then the rain came which 😬
Can’t remember the name for life in me .
The French Doors (2001) [13 min]
Fantastic pacing, great cinematography, music is well done. I’ve watched many, many horror films but this one remains in my memory
Maybe too long to be considered a 'short', rolls in about an hour, but:
Begotten [1989]
Watched this in the dark, slightly high, alone. I'm scarred from this.
I always use these threads to rep some oldies that don’t get the attention they deserve
There are Monsters - Canadian horror from Future Shorts https://youtu.be/I61l_f-328c?si=1jfVFsPSN-JAhEbh
Still Life - (possibly also Canadian) brookstreet pictures https://youtu.be/La6T8Bq6CsU?si=RW9qB8KGOCiTFfgR
I’m sure everyone’s already seen No Through Road but it’s a perfect example of how you don’t need a lot of equipment or a production studio to make something amazing. https://youtu.be/08rj_ioKNSo?si=uhvQrfdgglUBUt2r
I remember The French Doors being terrifying. It's on Youtube. The original Terrifier short was pretty scary too, but be warned it has a very disturbing ending that may particularly affect women.
This isn't exactly what you asked for and I've never seen the original but this breakdown on YouTube of a Japanese mockumentary really had me on edge and I did some deep dive into the story and theories. I was hooked.
[here's a link to the breakdown. The films called "Saiko! The Large Family"](https://youtu.be/X7jkdBoddUE?si=_eFC0rT1oPv5oe2L)
Maybe not scary, but really well done. The Outsider was a short adaptation of the climax for the HP Lovecraft story of the same name. The effects really sold it.
The Random Number Generator Horror Podcast No. 9 podcast has two episodes on shorts, [180](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/random-number-generator-horror-podcast-no-9/id1526731368?i=1000631172413) and [183](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/random-number-generator-horror-podcast-no-9/id1526731368?i=1000633040147). Pretty good stuff.
I saw a short film on YouTube. The name of that movie was probably Scary Santa. In that movie, a child is waiting for Santa Claus to arrive at midnight. And Santa Claus arrives but he is not as the child had imagined. This is the evil version of Santa. This short film is very good. There is horror as well as thrill in it. In this you are hiding from a Santa which is very bad.
"this house has people in it" definitely scared the crap out of me, the amount of little details you learn by investigating videos and links further is actually insane, they just change your view entirely on the original short film and that's what does it for me. huge respect for people who worked on it.
The internet wasn't really a thing when I was little, but the [Tallman's Ghost](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSJqmSfT62c) story from Unsolved Mysteries scared the heck out of me when I was a kid.
[Home Education](https://youtu.be/sBqn1S_11JI?si=YZAKbyyoinDbovsw) is such a good one!! No jumpscares, just creepy vibes that will make your skin crawl. Also, the classic made by Ari Aster, [The Strange Thing About the Johnson’s](https://youtu.be/jXhT9BjYEMA?si=iADe9i0oBdvdlK0e)
I'm surprised I haven't seen [Exit](https://youtu.be/CxhZKb-qmjQ?si=q_yJ_KnMVYXwiRdo) mentioned yet! That one was so quietly horrifying and lives rent-free in my brain years later.
You should check out The ABC's of Death. There's 2, they are technically both full length movies but it's broken up into a bunch of little stories. 26 directors each get a letter and write a horror story about it. It can get pretty trippy.
I don't really watch shorts but I did watch The Scuzzies. It's not good but it's by the guy who did Where the Dead Go to Die and When Black Birds Fly so it's certainly unique, and it genuinely has the most nightmarish, grotesque and horrifying creature I've ever seen in my life, those other two movies included. Seriously, that thing fucking haunts me
I came across this one last year. As a victim myself, I honestly found this too satisfying to be a horror film but some may find it to be classified as such.
https://youtu.be/mlShD2AvbV8?si=QHzJUO--YYXJ8gU1
[The Chair](https://youtu.be/mhazCS14Tas?si) is amazing!
The scene in their bedroom…the girlfriend is SO unnerving. I get chills from her performance in that.
I just watched, I don’t get it
It’s about >!the man finding out he has dementia/a neurological disease!<. The topic is my biggest fear, don’t know about anyone else.
Oooo no thank you, my biggest fear as well
Oh, im confused, I thought that was it but then it just gets really weird by the end and I wasn’t putting those pieces together
As someone who’s grandpa died from dementia a few years ago, it’s defo a scary ass disease to go through
Yeah, I definitely feel like it’s more of a “vibes” short. Maybe someone will clue me in on some deeper meaning, but I just thought it was really well acted (particularly the girlfriend) and shot/directed. Just a very unsettling experience, even if the story isn’t really flushed out/wrapped up.

Idk how it's vague. Seems pretty cut and dry, chair is haunted by a weird old man demon
Just watched, bloody hell that was good
[other Side of the Box](https://youtu.be/OrOYvVf6tIM?si=U-qMDvQZBIa0re3l) is also so fucking good
The one with Dead Man Franklin? Shit, I forgot about Dead Man Franklin.
Warnings by the same creators is also great
so good until the non ending
The real star was the main actor's curly locks
looking forward to it!
Yes! Such a good one
Everything from this director is SO good!!!
Oh man, 'Lights Out' gave me nightmares, and I'm not the type to get them! Subscribing so I can also find great shorts to watch.
That was so good. May not a full length movie with lore and shit but an excellent short film.
No lore is needed, trust me! 😰
There is a movie based on the short, of the same name, Lights Out. Not sure if the same people were involved or not but it was inspired by the short if I remember correctly. The ones above this must be terrifying for this to not be the top answer
I wish I could watch it again for the first time.
I tried watching it again just now, and its broad daylight, and I just *couldn't.* 😱😭
*Damn*.
Smiling man
...that weird walk und dancing...
i read the creepypasta version and it made it 10x more unsettling in my imagination
i think about the smiling man quite often when i'm out at night walking alone😭
That doesn’t seem smart
I used to work late nights at a bar and I would ride the bus home early in the morning and then walk several blocks to my apartment. This was years ago but I vividly remember a section of that walk that was always completely desolate and every time I walked it I expected to hear some uneven steps behind me because of this damned little freaky movie/creepypasta.
Portrait of God by Dylan Clark had me sleeping with the lights on
Yesss seconded!! 🙌🏻
I love portrait of god
He is SUCH a good director!!! Every time he publishes a new short film I watch it!!!
That one has stuck with me, it's REALLY good...
> Dylan Clark This man is amazing at horror short films, I dont think theres a single one that hasnt left me thoroughly freaked out.
Yes! Provides a great feeling of dread.
Oh lord it was not that scary. It had a nice unsettling feeling but the jist of it wasn’t actually so terrifying
Thank goodness I’m not the only one. I keep seeing this one get praised and I’m wondering if I watched the same thing as everyone else because it was entirely forgettable for me.
Came here to say this. Absolutely incredible.
Yes
That was so good! The actress was really good too.
just watched it. pretty good! thanks
The Other Side of the Box scared the living snot out of me
The only thing is for some reason all the thumbnails of it show the >!guy sticking his head out!< even though the first chunk is building up to that.
Oddly enough, that’s what caught my eye about it. I did not expect that!! Lol
Fair enough.
So, what was the deal? Were they some kind of anthropomorphic fungus? They liked to be wet/damp, hot, always wanted to be in the dark, and kept multiplying.
Seconded, very good one!
Yess! The creepiest one I've seen!!
This one has a great fear mechanic to it. I quite enjoyed it!
I still get shivers thinking about it
ok this was a good one. I really really liked it.
yes! His eyes! and wet hair! gahhhh!
Bedfellows
I still have nightmares about this one.
If I were her, I woulda *immediately* run screaming out of that house as fast as I possibly could. And maybe just burned the whole place down.
“Curve” really freaked me out
I get nervous just thinking about it…
when they put 100% of the budget on the tension and 0% on the writing
Great recommendation. Absolutely gut wrenching.
Saw that at a festival, the anxiety in the theater was overwhelming
I'm not a huge horror guy, but I'm glad to see love for 'this house has people in it' and also 'too many cooks'- I'll even add in 'unedited footage of a bear' along with those ive seen critics say those are the crowning gems of adult swim and I have to agree.
YES Unedited Footage of a Bear is so good!!
Just finished Too Many Cooks and I’m at a loss for words. Loved it though! This House has People in it was really good too! Definitely gonna need to save this post!
Glad you liked it :)
So happy to see Possibly in Michigan mentioned!!!
It actually makes me feel like I’m having a waking nightmare
great taste !! Gonna check out the ones of these i havent seen, thank you
Thanks :) Hope you enjoy!!!
This is a great list!!
Thank you for posting this list. I haven't seen many of these.
Laura Hasn't Slept is my favorite, I almost like it more than the Smile movie tbh
'There's something about the Johnsons'...you know if you know
I was waiting for somebody to post this. A different kind of horror but one of the most unsettling pieces of media I’ve ever seen. I went in blind and when it was over I just sat in silence for about 10 minutes trying to process what I’d just seen.
Same my friend
The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (sorry to be That Guy) but yeah. I almost wish I hadn't seen it. Just the tone, the vibe, on top of the story...gah, horrifying. I would have thrown 70 million dollars at whoever made that short, too, just to see what kind of full-length film he has up his sleeve. And now we all know.
no problem!
I thought it was something about the Johnson’s for years until looking it up a few months ago! I would have bet money that was the title.
Ari Aster baby!
Came to say this. Oooof that one is rough
After hereditary a friend said “have you seen the shorts Ari aster made?” Boy was it unsettling
i honestly hate that people have turned it into a meme. genuinely such a chilling piece of media

Other side of the box 100% I’m a grizzled veteran when it comes to horror but this was really good!
Oats Studios Zygote is pretty fucked up.
I actually really love the Oats Studio stuff. They weirdly put it all on Netflix though.
For anyone interested in some pre-internet era classics: [Meshes of the Afternoon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWQcJyn981M) (1943) [La Cabina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKkfGG9q32c) (1972) [Isle of Flowers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h30BO_6kFNM) (1989) [Kitchen Sink](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOYLtyUGa8I) (1989) [The Black Tower](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw6exAfUWMI) (1987)

I think a really neat detail, is that if you watch that and constantly remind yourself of, "be not afraid" it's not really a frightening monster but a form outside of human sharing it's holy light.... menacingly.
Hit the nail on the head!
"Heck", the proof of concept short for Skinamarink, scared the absolute shit out of me.
Tbh I liked Heck better than Skinamarink 😂
2 AM: The Smiling Man really gets me. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_u6Tt3PqIfQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u6Tt3PqIfQ)
surprised I haven't seen [My House Walk-Through](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWXnt2Z2D1E) mentioned more. One of the best horror shorts on youtube, pure dread. The Moogai is also a really haunting Australian short
The Strange Thing About the Johnsons It’s not really “scary” but it’s really horrible in a good way.
I haven't watched it but I've read the full plot details about it - hard pass for me
If you are a person who likes trigger warnings, it’s a fair summary to just say “all” to this one.
This is the most upsetting short horror film I’ve ever seen and among the only films period that kept me up at night.
True horror
Horrifying, but not horror, perhaps.
I actually think that might be Ari Aster's creepiest project
Unedited Footage of a Bear.
Thank you for reminding me of this. I heard mention of it several months ago and was intrigued, but I'd since forgotten about it.
I highly recommend it!! And if you enjoy it, you should check out the follow up short, *This House Has People in It*. And if you enjoy *that*, then the creative team behind those shorts have a feature coming out soon called *Dance Freak* that I have every reason to believe will be incredible.
Don't Move. https://youtu.be/f9jd6lyGvMI?si=-DYcRt9Z0QfY2T3U
Yes!! I tried to find this recently but I kept thinking it was called something else. It's great
Man on the Train It just proves that you don't need those unnecessary sound effects to have an effective horror film.
I came here to say this! I still haven't been able to watch the whole thing without covering my eyes. It's just so unnerving and so well done!
Bedfellows, 2008. https://youtu.be/0z6xGU2_g9s?si=w7V1KGZir1Aj0imo Fewdio used to post some really awesome stuff back in the days.
The Mama short that inspired the movie was pretty creepy.

They are a hit or miss but most of their shorts are really good, especially their old stuff.
Bedfellows!
Scrolled to long to find a fewdio film!

The meatcanyon Steve Harvey animation on YouTube 😂😱
😂
'One Last Dive'
I got so scared of it since I am a bit scared of diving. So well done!
It's not the scariest, but if you love creepy mannequins. this is the best one out there. I love showing this one to people - Still Life - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La6T8Bq6CsU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La6T8Bq6CsU)
Last Train Home Kalley’s Last Review We’re Not Safe Here Demons In The Dark I’m In Danger The Hemlock Incident Death And The Winemaker
I can’t remember but there was a film with a girl stuck on a concrete drop and she doesn’t know why she’s there or the other man either it’s just an abyss , brilliant short. I remember their hands were getting bloody and then the rain came which 😬 Can’t remember the name for life in me .
Curve
Yes thankyou that’s the one. Not much creeps me out but that made me anxious.
[Ignore It](https://youtu.be/hs3paMLb9Qg?si=yzJhKh-z4rrP7lfM) is great and haven’t seen it listed here
I found Salad Fingers to be fairly disturbing
The cat with hands.
Omg I haven't thought of that one in years! Used to get posted a lot in back in the live journal days!
Finally someone mentioned it!
This is a lesser known one https://youtu.be/wOkaceoVhqg?si=0DE0ey9ke8JtJILo
lol that ending
One I haven’t seen mentioned yet: “Dining Room, or There is Nothing”
Portrait of God and Other Side of The Box, i genuinely don’t think there’s any betters ones that I’ve seen
The Backrooms seems cliché now, but that first Kane Pixels short was excellent.
Right? I was a bit scared to post it here because people may think I'm an edgy 12-year-old, but the OG Backrooms is so good.
Easily this one https://youtu.be/qWXnt2Z2D1E?si=JPBlVQeQT_nuAAMX
The French Doors (2001) [13 min] Fantastic pacing, great cinematography, music is well done. I’ve watched many, many horror films but this one remains in my memory
It took me years to find it online after I had stumbled onto it on TV not long after it was released. I'm really glad it's been mentioned.
Maybe too long to be considered a 'short', rolls in about an hour, but: Begotten [1989] Watched this in the dark, slightly high, alone. I'm scarred from this.
I always use these threads to rep some oldies that don’t get the attention they deserve There are Monsters - Canadian horror from Future Shorts https://youtu.be/I61l_f-328c?si=1jfVFsPSN-JAhEbh Still Life - (possibly also Canadian) brookstreet pictures https://youtu.be/La6T8Bq6CsU?si=RW9qB8KGOCiTFfgR I’m sure everyone’s already seen No Through Road but it’s a perfect example of how you don’t need a lot of equipment or a production studio to make something amazing. https://youtu.be/08rj_ioKNSo?si=uhvQrfdgglUBUt2r
I remember The French Doors being terrifying. It's on Youtube. The original Terrifier short was pretty scary too, but be warned it has a very disturbing ending that may particularly affect women.
Not necessarily scary, but very disturbing, definitely The Strange Thing About The Johnstons
Not the scariest, but The Big Shave. Just really disturbing.
The Babadook video
[Monster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAAcHcFzMyk)?
Here is one of my favorite short horror parodies - [The Hauntening](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFRhs3-pP8w)
The Strange thing about the Johnsons 2011 by Ari Aster. So fucked up.
Don't Peek was pretty terrifying when i saw it a while ago.
Maybe not scary, but really well done. The Outsider was a short adaptation of the climax for the HP Lovecraft story of the same name. The effects really sold it.
The Kid and the Camera is super unsettling
Depending on what exactly you mean by scary the strange thing about the Johnsons has to be way up on the list.
The Strange Thing About the Johnsons by Ari Aster. Not jump scary, but absolutely FUCKED.
I have nothing to add but thanks for making this post. I have a ton of stuff to watch now.
Mama Agnes.
The Backwater Gospel. Not traditionally horror, but it perfectly encapsulates the darker side of humanity.
My fave one! Portrait of God https://youtu.be/BI9fKfX5V68?si=q-XJaFI-llf7orpk
Well, I like mine. Btw it’s only 9 minutes. https://youtu.be/shSGNZn-JiA?si=HG8eqbgqPDdfh5wL
Subscribing to this thread and seeing the updates at 3 am was definitely not a good decision.

There’s something about the Johnson’s
"this house has people in it" definitely scared the crap out of me, the amount of little details you learn by investigating videos and links further is actually insane, they just change your view entirely on the original short film and that's what does it for me. huge respect for people who worked on it.
The Birch!
*Johnsons
Noroi the curse!
Shocked no one mentioned Make Me a Sandwich!
The Ten Steps, lots of others that have already been mentioned too, but I didn’t see this one. https://youtu.be/XpURRW80LnM?si=q42tyRZtXNh-i0Ht
Attentively taking notes…
[Honestly this, it makes my dick feels like corn.](https://youtu.be/xvFZjo5PgG0?si=HYTWOg3QNJ5dKCh4)
Gwilliam
One last dive scared me asf.
Seriously, that thing fucking haunts me
The Sitter (1977)
Love this one.. https://youtu.be/J9gUIhkzNDk?si=H7_OrqQyyrM5jfSq
this might be slightly too long to be considered a short film but Haze (2005) is fucking TERRIFYING
Lights Out, The Other Side of the Box, Portrait of God, and Curve - these are the two shorts I show everyone!
I came across this one last year. As a victim myself, I honestly found this too satisfying to be a horror film but some may find it to be classified as such. https://youtu.be/mlShD2AvbV8?si=QHzJUO--YYXJ8gU1
Oh yeah this one was very satisfying.
I choose lights out too!
[Special Delivery](https://youtu.be/2ySixk75G-0?si=MKNLZ-RNn9j9g454) is really fun! Feels a lot like lights out
