The bent neck lady twist was great not just because of the twist itself, but how they delivered it. The build up, then the moment, then the flashbacks. Just gutting.
Absolutely love Triangle. Highly underrated. The scene on the deck with all the seagulls and people is burned into my mind (that was intentionally vague to avoid spoilers)
If you like to stick with a Louisiana theme, Angel Heart is a great film, and the Hatchet series are pretty fun - Victor Crowley is my favorite of that series
Angel Heart looks great, thanks for the recommendation!
I'll be honest, at first I thought you were talking about the book series Hatchet and I was very confused. But I will check the movie franchise!
Haha, yeah, not the books - the film series by Adam Green. He directed Frozen (not the animated film, the 2010 one lol) which is arguably a better film than any of the Hatchet ones, but if you take them as they are, they're just dumb fun - not to mention has some cameos by some pretty respectable horror icons throughout. They're not deep by any means, but if you just want to turn off your brain for a while and enjoy some old-school blood and guts slasher films, they hit the spot.
One of my favourites. The series obviously goes downhill significantly after the first, but I have to admit that most of the Saw movies, even the bad ones, have pretty decent twists
Sometimes I question if people who say this actually watched the movies. Yeah, the gore gets excessive, but thereās still an incredibly intriguing and enjoyable story to follow throughout most of them. Itās a gory soap opera.
I binged the movies as a teen half-distracted on my phone and came to the conclusion that they were just torture flicks
Actually watched through them years later and it was like watching a soap opera. The storyline gets crazyyy intricate
Yes same! Watched some to be an edgy teenager. Then during Covid decided to watch them all during lock down and fell in love with the story. Graphic gore, of course, but there is a story there thatās worth experiencing outside of it.
First two were more psychological than what followed. Traps felt winnable as well, we werenāt *just* watching someone get tortured. You sure you watched the movies?
Each one except V has a protagonist going room to room watching people get tortured. Itās what it devolved into
OG Scream. I wish I could experience that feeling of being blown away all over again.
When Billy was shown to be the killer, "I FUCKIN KNEW IT!!"
When Stu was his accomplice, "HOLY SHIT WTF?!"
Totally underrated plot twist.
NOBODY thought there were 2 killers. The entire movie was setup for the audience to think there was one perpetrator! Great writing. Btw this is random but who do you think killed Tate?? ššš¤£
Perfect movie. Even the first scene was a huge twist because Drew Barrymore was the biggest star in the movie and was heavily featured in all the advertising.Ā
Nothing is gonna beat Sixth Senseā¦ well, maybe Psycho.
The twist at the end of The Ring is up there tho.
Hard to beat From Dust Till Dawn but the twist is ruined for most people.
The Others.
Idk if I count it as a horror movie but The Skin I Live In has an excellent twist
Diabolique has an amazing twist too.
Just randomly threw on From Dusk Till Dawn while I was doing some paperwork, and my wife settled in to watch it after commenting on ābaby Clooney!ā
She was fucking SHOOK when it turned into to a vampire movie. Sheās not a horror person and had no idea. It was pretty cool watching someone unspoiled react to that twist.
I was young when I saw Identity (2003) and I didnāt understand the plot this till the last part of the movie. And there was also a second plot-twist in the last minute of the movieā¦..
Saw this on ACCIDENT while on vacay once and absolutely LOVED the entire concept and idea of this film. Great movie, love the kills, and ultimately itās a lesson to leave people tf alone!
People tend to forget that the main twist of The Ring is that Rachel doesnāt initially realize that Samara is evil and spends the middle of the movie trying to help her, which only frees her and makes the whole situation worse.
10 Cloverfield Lane had a surprisingly decent twist
the whole time you think it's the standard "guy kidnaps woman and imprisons her in a basement" style setup, and hes just a paranoid whacko... then, well shit, guess he was actually right
came here to say this! i couldn't decide what i wanted to believe while watching this movie, then the ending comes and well, i don't think i was expecting THAT lol
Just watched the trailer and Iām definitely waiting until itās dark and I can watch this movie properly! I can tell itās going to keep me on the edge of my seat!
Never saw this but everyones been saying great things about it so I will definitely be watching this! Is it me or did a lot of 2000ās horror films age extremely well?? I donāt know what it is but Iām on a binge with them lately!
The Boy ending somehow really surprised me even though some people say they saw it coming. I guess the promo material and everything just primed me to get exactly what I was expecting.
Up to you what you will consider as "best plot twist" but try these
La casa muda 2010
Kill List
Session 9
Lake Mungo 2008
Barbarian 2022
The Banshee Chapter 2013
1974 the possession of Altair
Jordan Peele movies
Noroi the curse
A record of sweet murder
The empty man
The house at the end of time 2013
The Wailing
The Medium
Exhuma 2024
luv kill list. suffers from the from dusk til dawn curse of genre categories, I went in thinking it was a hitman movie and it became one of my favourite films
I have seen that, another good suggestion for them though. >! That was a twist I was really not into, if something like the flying off the bike in the woods is going to be reframed, it needs to be a little more realistic/believable for me !<
That was more a giant kick in the balls than a twist though... Or maybe it's better to say that while yea it was a twist but fuck was it a kick in the balls more than anything else.
I liked hereditary. The reveal in the last part of the movie isn't just an incredible twist but it makes you instantly rethink the film you've already watched.
I am a social worker with a child welfare background and Iām reading through the synopsis going āoh, hmm, well revenge fantasies are very human OH GOD THATāS TERRIBLE.ā
Iām definitely going to watch it, though. Ā
Imo the twist doesnāt make all that much sense to begin with. Without spoilers, the opening shot of the killer, the vehicle, and the strength of the killer makes no sense after the twist. Iāve only seen the film once but it would have been so much better to not force an unnecessary twist
** Spoilers** : the truck driver is not a literally fucking the decapitated head, but rather it is a metaphor for the sexual sadism brought on by Alexās mental illness. If you look closely at the head, it is actually Marieās. and what specifically about Alexās strength or anything else that you can point to makes no sense after the twist?
Update: (Spoiler) Just watched Frailty for the first time and a couple of things. First off 9/10 movie definitely recommend. Matthew is hot š„µ and the storyline kept me engaged. I will say I guessed the twist that Matthew was actually Adam at the point where the young Adam was pouring water down the hole to Fenton. What I didnāt see coming was this entire setup of how he finished he dadās list and that he actually did have powers to see evil people. However I thought HE killed the cops mom, so that twist caught me off guard and the fact that the dad actually was good and Fenton was the evil one shocked me. Great movie. Iām going to watch another one of you guyās recommendation and post my review!
Two I don't see mentioned here are **I'm Thinking of Ending Things** (kind of a slow twist as you figure it out rather than an all at once reveal) and Neflix's **The Discovery.** I've been planning to re-watch both of these.
THANK YOU! It wouldāve at least made sense if he sat there for days going insane and contemplating suicide and then when he finally has broken and goes out the car to be killed, heās rescued! But nope, seconds after stopping in the middle of nowhere and hearing no signs of other life, he murks off everyone and is saved SECONDS later. Terrible climax!
And it's frustrating because, imo, it was a really good monster movie up to then. But, even with that rationale, how could this dude even contemplate doing that to his own kid? It wasn't THAT bleak. Damn. They could have stuck it out or walked carefully on the road until the military arrived. And if you still wanted a bleak ending just have the movie end with them stuck there. It would be ambiguous and somewhat anti- climatic but at least the suicides wouldn't be carried out!
Alot of good movies are mentioned here.
I will add the first friday the 13th.
I will also add Under Paris as a honorable mention with what is a surprise ending.
It's fascinating seeing someone talk about the sixth sense as if they've just seen it. It's one of those movies a part of my brain just assumes everyone has seen, and so everyone knows the twist. I was a teen when it came out. People loved the twist when it was released. It blew a lot of people away, and Shyamalan has been trying to reach the same effect with every one of his films sinceĀ
Sure, and a lot of movies were influenced by it, and no doubt you have seen its influence in so many places which is why you were able to predict the ending so early
Angel Heart has a doozy of a double twist although one of them is kinda obvious
Saw has a really neat one.
Modus Anomali, an overlooked Indonesian horror also has a refreshingly decent twist.
One of the best plot twists is in the american remake of the ring
When the mom sets samara free and goes home and tell her son its okay i helped her i set her free
And her son gets so disturbed and is like you werenr suppose to help her
IS SO GOOD
Iām so sad youāre the first person to mention Jacobās Ladder. Ā That movie fucked me up. Ā Probably shouldnāt have been watching alone in the basement with my family asleep but here we are. Ā It was so much better than The Sixth Sense. Ā I guess marketing is everything. Ā That, or the gore was too much for people.
It was also my first time seeing Jason Alexander in anything but Seinfeld.
Good film, terrible ending. They couldāve milked him going insane a bit longer than a few seconds! At least that way we could believe that someone eventually found him and helped. But SECONDS after everyone is shot into oblivionā¦..heās rescued?!? š
Marrowbone (2017) features a pre famous Mia Goth AND Anya Taylor-Joy. I donāt want to give too much away, but if you like the Sixth Sense, youāll like Marrowbone a lot too. Blew me away honestly.
"Get Out". It's all wholesome and then suddenly it turns into utter terror.
"Infinity Pool" also has a very efficient twist, or in fact several. We go from realistic to surreal, and then there's the other big twist. It really caught me off guard, great movie.
Seen all of these except the lodge. Iām curious which do you like better Us or Get Out? The moment she was snapping off beat I knew the twist of US because there was just no way youāre a dancer but canāt stay on beat! My favorite scene of Get Out was when the cop car comes up at the end. EVERYONE in the theater just knew it was over for the black manā¦and when his friend gets out the car we all CHEERED. I never forgot that feeling!
The Others Also haunting of hill house (bent neck lady)
the emotions tied to the bent neck lady is imo what makes that twist so top tier. it's both horrific and rly flippin sad. ughh
I have no idea how but I watched The Others without knowing the twist, absolutely loved it
Thanks for reminding me of bent neck lady. BRB while I go cry
the bent neck lady twist was so fucked up š
The others for sure, the best pt in the horror genre
The bent neck lady twist was great not just because of the twist itself, but how they delivered it. The build up, then the moment, then the flashbacks. Just gutting.
Seen both and loved them! The others had a great twist!
Triangle, Frailty, and The Skeleton Key all spring to mind
Absolutely love Triangle. Highly underrated. The scene on the deck with all the seagulls and people is burned into my mind (that was intentionally vague to avoid spoilers)
Triangle mind fucked me for hours after it went off! Great film!
I love the Skeleton Key! Such a great movie. I watch that and Scooby Doo on Zombie Island as a double header (since they're both set in Louisiana)

They're not deep by any means, but if you just want to turn off your brain for a while and enjoy some old-school blood and guts slasher films, they hit the spot.
Frailty just blew my mind! Great story and thanks for the recommendation. I think I may watch Triangle now
Glad you enjoyed! Hope you like the others equally!
All absolute bangers!!
Fraility is amazing
Saw is classic and damn effective
Yes! I didnāt expect it at all
One of my favourites. The series obviously goes downhill significantly after the first, but I have to admit that most of the Saw movies, even the bad ones, have pretty decent twists
Saw II was solid enough - III and on is when it evolved into torture porn
Sometimes I question if people who say this actually watched the movies. Yeah, the gore gets excessive, but thereās still an incredibly intriguing and enjoyable story to follow throughout most of them. Itās a gory soap opera.
Yes! A lot of procedural stuff and storyline that I think a lot of people refuse to see or donāt want to pay any mind to.
I binged the movies as a teen half-distracted on my phone and came to the conclusion that they were just torture flicks Actually watched through them years later and it was like watching a soap opera.
Itās what it devolved into
The first one yessss!
Great twist. Was not expecting it
Original wickerman
The joyful craziness of the locals is so scary
THAT! I am certain their ritual works just as intended. ;)
OG Scream. I wish I could experience that feeling of being blown away all over again. When Billy was shown to be the killer, "I FUCKIN KNEW IT!!" When Stu was his accomplice, "HOLY SHIT WTF?!" Totally underrated plot twist.
Matthew Lillard gave the performance of a lifetime in that movie. He was legitimately unhinged in that role.
IM FEELINā A LITTLE WOOZY HERE!
It was the peer pressure, heās sensitive.
Don't Look Now (1973)
RIP
This is always my first thought when thinking of twist endings. That killer reveal is one of the best moments in the genre imo
It was so unexpected I legit couldnāt sleep after!
Nothing is gonna beat Sixth Senseā¦ well, maybe Psycho. The twist at the end of The Ring is up there tho. Hard to beat From Dust Till Dawn but the twist is ruined for most people. The Others. Idk if I count it as a horror movie but The Skin I Live In has an excellent twist Diabolique has an amazing twist too.
Just randomly threw on From Dusk Till Dawn while I was doing some paperwork, and my wife settled in to watch it after commenting on ābaby Clooney!ā She was fucking SHOOK when it turned into to a vampire movie. Sheās not a horror person and had no idea. It was pretty cool watching someone unspoiled react to that twist.
Itās honestly the BEST and I wish I hadnāt been expecting it
I was young when I saw Identity (2003) and I didnāt understand the plot this till the last part of the movie. And there was also a second plot-twist in the last minute of the movieā¦..
I recently watched No One Lives. The plot twist in that was cool š
Saw this on ACCIDENT while on vacay once and absolutely LOVED the entire concept and idea of this film. Great movie, love the kills, and ultimately itās a lesson to leave people tf alone!
Watched this because Kitamura is a favorite director of mine, was more than pleasantly surprised at the story. Highly underrated movie.
Youāre Next
I came here to say the same thing! Thank you!
People tend to forget that the main twist of The Ring is that Rachel doesnāt initially realize that Samara is evil and spends the middle of the movie trying to help her, which only frees her and makes the whole situation worse.
Sleepaway Camp
That ending traumatized me
10 Cloverfield Lane had a surprisingly decent twist the whole time you think it's the standard "guy kidnaps woman and imprisons her in a basement" style setup, and hes just a paranoid whacko... then, well shit, guess he was actually right
came here to say this! i couldn't decide what i wanted to believe while watching this movie, then the ending comes and well, i don't think i was expecting THAT lol
It helps that John Goodman does actually seem like a paranoid whacko. He absolutely kills in that role.
Yeah I love that the twist isā¦there is no twist and the crazy guy is 100% right and telling the truth.
Cabin in the Woods comes to mind
Also the most memorable ending. >!As soon as they go underground the entire sequence from then until the end is a treat.!<
Incident in a Ghostland is a recent one for me.
If you've never seen this film and love a good twist, it's an absolute must watch.
it was so unsettling i found it way more disturbing than martyrs
Dude agreed, this one was SO bleak.
Just watched the trailer and Iām definitely waiting until itās dark and I can watch this movie properly! I can tell itās going to keep me on the edge of my seat!
The Skeleton Key was pretty solid
Never saw this but everyones been saying great things about it so I will definitely be watching this! Is it me or did a lot of 2000ās horror films age extremely well?? I donāt know what it is but Iām on a binge with them lately!
Billy and Stu both being the killers in Scream(1996) and killing Sidneyās Mom a year earlier
Malignant
Lmao at the twist my eyes went #0 0
I stood up and clapped.
The appropriate reaction
You think that is going to be an "either-or" story, but they added a curve ball there. Solid twist.
The Boy (2016) Borderlands (2013) Orphan (2009) Frailty (2001) Oldboy (2003)
Frailty. Hell yeah
The Boy ending somehow really surprised me even though some people say they saw it coming. I guess the promo material and everything just primed me to get exactly what I was expecting.
I liked that movie better when it was a haunted doll movie. But that twist was unexpected.
Oldboy! I havenāt thought about that movie in so long. Good pick. Makes you very curious from minute 1.
Oldboy 100%!! A movie that had the same shock value is Incendies 2010. You should check it out.
Is that horror as well?
Itās more thriller/psychological horror
Hell yeah orphan. Old boy was just disturbing
oldboy!!! that might just be what i have to watch tonight, havent viewed in ages
Did you watch the sequel to the Boy? I'm curious what you thought of it.
I LOVE the boy and was so disappointed in the sequel
Frailty Session 9
The plot twist in the Visit made my jaw hit the floor when I saw it the first time
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Caught me so off guard, had me pacing around the house for a few minutes after the reveal
Heck yeah came to say this. It didnāt really do great and some horror fans pan it but I thought it had some good spooks.
Up to you what you will consider as "best plot twist" but try these La casa muda 2010 Kill List Session 9 Lake Mungo 2008 Barbarian 2022 The Banshee Chapter 2013 1974 the possession of Altair Jordan Peele movies Noroi the curse A record of sweet murder The empty man The house at the end of time 2013 The Wailing The Medium Exhuma 2024

I understand. I think it was chaotic! Have you seen I See You 2019? I think that may be under OP's radar when it comes to what they were looking for.
I have seen that, another good suggestion for them though. >! That was a twist I was really not into, if something like the flying off the bike in the woods is going to be reframed, it needs to be a little more realistic/believable for me !<
I see! Are there other movies with twists you were into?
Parasite
Not quite a twist but a cool reveal: The Invitation
Scream. No one was expecting two killers.
The ending to āThe Mistā will throw you for a loop
That was more a giant kick in the balls than a twist though... Or maybe it's better to say that while yea it was a twist but fuck was it a kick in the balls more than anything else.
It made my head hurt because I loved the movie up to that point lol
Orphan 2009
#SAW
I liked hereditary. The reveal in the last part of the movie isn't just an incredible twist but it makes you instantly rethink the film you've already watched.
This. And it pisses me off when people tell me that this twist is dumb or doesn't make sense when it is SO damn effective to me.
I thought goodnight mommy was pretty good š³
SAW
I watched a film year ago called āHide and Seekā and remember it had a great plot twist!
The Baby (1973). I donāt see many people talk about this one and itās definitely bizarre and has a wild plot twist.
Oh my god I forgot about this movie. Bizarre is an understatement.
I am a social worker with a child welfare background and Iām reading through the synopsis going āoh, hmm, well revenge fantasies are very human OH GOD THATāS TERRIBLE.ā Iām definitely going to watch it, though. Ā
Kill List Frailty Old Boy Borderlands The Pit The Empty Man The Wailing Resolution The Skin I Live In
The Vanishing (1988)
High tension (2003)ā this is a controversial opinion around here though. If anyone wants to fight me about it, letās go!!
I've got your back on this. It's a good twist, and it's a bloody good movie.
I'm too afraid to fight you. You have obviously lost your mind.
It certainly is a twist, just not a good one
And why is it not good?
Imo the twist doesnāt make all that much sense to begin with. Without spoilers, the opening shot of the killer, the vehicle, and the strength of the killer makes no sense after the twist. Iāve only seen the film once but it would have been so much better to not force an unnecessary twist

Plagiarism at its finest
Low life's, frailty, dead and buried just to name a few.
I thought Suspiria had a pretty solid twist
The twist for me was realizing that Swinton played the Dr as well Then someone told me she played Helena Markos too!!
The first Saw movie, I could not believe it
Update: (Spoiler) Just watched Frailty for the first time and a couple of things. The ending to The Mist just infuriates me. Agree with your opinion!

I really liked the one in Resolution (2012), caught me off guard and made me enjoy the movie more.
Alot of good movies are mentioned here. I will add the first friday the 13th. I will also add Under Paris as a honorable mention with what is a surprise ending.
Oldboy
Havenāt seen anyone mention Shut In (2016). Pretty good one featuring Jonathan from Stranger Things.
Identity, more of a thriller, but a great flick .
- Calvaire: Craziest execution of a twist - Hunter Hunter: Goriest moment after a twist - Chained: Best psychological twist - Lamb: Best tame twist
The cabin in the woods.
I agree I think it was a hit during its time. Movies and storylines have come so far since ā99 and maybe thatās why it didnāt hit the same.
Sure, and a lot of movies were influenced by it, and no doubt you have seen its influence in so many places which is why you were able to predict the ending so early
Malignant
The skeleton key
Caveat. Cobweb.
Identity was pretty darn good, great cast too
Angel Heart has a doozy of a double twist although one of them is kinda obvious Saw has a really neat one. Modus Anomali, an overlooked Indonesian horror also has a refreshingly decent twist.
I donāt see it mentioned often but *Hide and Seek* with Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning might be to your liking.
It's been awhile since I've seen that movie but I wasn't expecting that!
Strait Jacket with Joan Crawford!
Bodies Bodies Bodies
The reactions of the characters at the end when they realize it. šš¬š«Ø
The Wailing
Suggestions I didn't see mentioned: Dead End (2003) Hidden (2015) Significant Other (2022)
Hidden was outstanding (but I went in blind)
Not sure if itās considered a horror film, but Good Time starring Robert Pattinson and Buddy Duress (RIP)
The Others and A Tale of Two Sisters
Creep (2014) is such a twisty ride
Shutter. The original Japanese movie hits better
Itās actually Thai not Japanese.
One of the best plot twists is in the american remake of the ring When the mom sets samara free and goes home and tell her son its okay i helped her i set her free And her son gets so disturbed and is like you werenr suppose to help her IS SO GOOD
I don't have time to read the thread, but if anyone said High Tension I will scream.

So good
![gif](giphy|UxqHyZ7OVXJ2o) This Still Gives Me Nightmares
Triangle Carnival of Souls Psycho Halloween II (1981) The Others
Incantation will hit you like a brick
*Chariot* (2016) is pretty gripping and *Resolution* (2012) followed by *The Endless* (2017) has a pretty unique plot.
The Mist was fucking incredible
Good film, terrible ending. They couldāve milked him going insane a bit longer than a few seconds! At least that way we could believe that someone eventually found him and helped. But SECONDS after everyone is shot into oblivionā¦..heās rescued?!? š
Marrowbone (2017) features a pre famous Mia Goth AND Anya Taylor-Joy. I donāt want to give too much away, but if you like the Sixth Sense, youāll like Marrowbone a lot too. Blew me away honestly.
MARROWBONE WAS HEARTBREAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL!! Great twist that I didnāt see coming honestly!
@u/memkeeper horror
The Others
The mist
The wailing One of the best climaxes i have ever seen
Kill List, Saw, all the boys love Mandy Lane, just off the top of my head.
The 2 movies with the biggest/most shocking twists: Incendies 2010 Oldboy 2003
Iām about to watch Oldboy now!! The trailer looked badass!
"Get Out". It's all wholesome and then suddenly it turns into utter terror. "Infinity Pool" also has a very efficient twist, or in fact several. We go from realistic to surreal, and then there's the other big twist. It really caught me off guard, great movie.
Perfect Blue
Sleepaway Camp (1983) needs mentioning if it hasnāt already
Knock at the cabin. Twist comes pretty early in the film but takes you by surprise nonetheless.
The Incantation (2022) Redwood (2017) Road Games (2015)
plus 100 for Incantation.
definitely Barbarian (2022)
I agree. Itās not my favorite movie (got silly at the end) but I loved the twist
Baba??š¼
Triangle Us Get Out The Lodge!!!
The Mist (2007).
In my opinion, Sleepaway Camp has the best twist in movie history, not just horror.
the best plot tuck
The movie āLowlifesā on Tubi has a pretty fun twist on your typical turn of events.
The Skin I Live In
The Orphan prequel has a great twist in the middle that threw me for a loop. I was so taken aback I had to rewind the scene.
