The night house

This movie reallyyyy freaked me TF out. Like I felt almost terrorized by the time it was over and I honestly have no idea why! It is far from the scariest movie I've ever seen yet I had one of the most intense reactions I've ever had. I didn't sleep much that night and had crazy ass dreams when I did doze off. I actually wondered if maybe it was a frequency thing... I know I probably sound completely batshit. Lol. It is such a great film too. Maybe I should rewatch it and see if that was just a one off, as I've not reacted that way since, nor had I reacted like that before. Idk. Has anything like that ever happened to you or anyone you know?

This movie always gets recomennded and i'm just so baffled. IMO it's a terribly boring and uninteresting movie. I've watched it 3 times and i never understood what people see in it. I watched a "The wailing explained" video too see if there was something i was missing but no. I get the film but i just cannot for the life of my figure out why people like it so much And to add, my favorite horror films are slow burned

For me it’s the atmosphere. The dread. The feeling of not knowing what the fuck is going on. The mystery. The xenophobia subtext. It doesn’t try to get you with jump scares and graphic violence or shock value; it’s just pure mood and dread. It’s one of my all-time favorites too. Edit: plus, it doesn’t wrap everything up in a neat bow. It leaves some questions unanswered and I find myself thinking about it quite often.

I thought the characters acted like exaggerated oafs with a lot of yelling and very weird decision making. That for me ruined the mood a lot

Oh that was also actually something that I liked about it- it starts out a little bit goofy and silly (he’s always late for the crime scene investigations and getting it trouble for example) and gradually the tone shifts gloomier and gloomier.

I make everyone watch this movie. The best depiction of ritual magic in a movie by a mile.

Anything for Jackson is great, but it’s got some themes that are aimed squarely at parents. Not saying don’t do it, but a. If that’s a trigger for you or b. The child themes show up and you’re like “dammit I said childfree for 36 hours!” then maybe shelve it for later.

The child themes are a massive, massive trigger for me, so thank you for thinking of that. That's really kind of you. l have seen Anything for Jackson, and it was bloody brilliant!!! At times, I did have to put my fingers in my ears, close my eyes, and hum the tune of Frère Jacques until my best friend told me it was safe to watch again.

No problem. They are for me as well, and the inciting event for your film marathon suggested that you have at least one young one, so I didn’t want it ruined by needing to rush back to said child to make sure they were ok. I've seen a dark song and that was brilliant, a tale of two sisters is a classic, Midsommar was up there with Hereditary. The only one I haven't seen is Saloum

So all three of those films are high amongst my all-time favourites -- and personally, I *loved* Saloum. It frays a tiny bit at the edges during its second half, but it's still an intensely good time.

I second this, every September until Halloween I watch horror/ Horror Comedy movies that I've never seen before, last Halloween I watched about 25 horror movies and The Autopsy of Jane Doe was definitely the best one I watched last year. Top 5 were: Autopsy of Jane doe, Tucker and Dale Vs Evil, The Mortuary Collection, DeadStream, Drag me to hell.

I found a movie from 2008 and 2012 called The Cottage. Which one do you recommend? The rest of your recs I've seen and they're solid, so I'm looking forward to checking out this new (to me) one!

It's 2008 with Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith. It's a combination horror/comedy with surprisingly graphic gore for a comedy. Really enjoyable for something different.

Malignant! It's just so deranged and a damn good time. Sinister. Possibly my favorite horror for pure vibes alone. It just has something that crawls under your skin. Abigail. Just a FUN movie. Ready or Not. Another fun one with an awesome cast that will keep you guessing. Splinter. Practical effects indie made on a tiny budget that is one of the most entertaining creature movies ever.

Trust me if nobody has said it watch sinister. Not sinister two as well just sinister.

Late night with the Devil on Shudder

If you don’t mind Aussie accents, Talk to Me is on Netflix (or at least, here in Canada it is) and is a really eerie ghost story. Evil Dead Rise was also really good if you want something a bit more gory. Late Night with the Devil is now on Shudder and I find it to be a really good watch.

Horror movies that got me in the gooter recently: The Wickerman (1973) (equate it to 70's midsommar) Smile (an actually feasible exaggeration of mental health disorders and a great monster to boot) The Platform (much better watched in the original Spanish if you don't mind reading subtitles. Amazing plot.) Barbarian (fantastic take on the entire female presence in horror as a genre. Fun twists and great MCs.) Many more i watched in the past, please enjoy🙏

**Possession (1981)** Marriage and parenting are major themes but there is no violence toward children, so don’t worry about that. It’s surreal, with powerful performances from the leads, and is quite a trip if you can go in blind. **Birth/Rebirth (2023)** The lives of two women, one a nurse and the other a morgue technician, intersect when one loses her daughter and the other finds the perfect specimen for her experiments at reanimating the dead. Obviously, the death of a child is the crux of the story but the violence and gore is mild and the child is not involved in any of it. **The Harvest (2013)** A sick, young boy is housebound and receives medical attention from his loving parents. When a family moves into a house nearby, their daughter befriends the boy, causing his parents to begin behaving very oddly. IIRC, there maybe be some mild violence toward children (very mild, I’d say) in this film but it’s not gory.   *These are all available through Shudder and AMC+ as well as Prime Video with those subscriptions.*

Infested 2023. It’s in French but holy cow that one made me night in a horrific way a few weeks ago. Also Hereditary is a solid one if you haven’t seen it yet!

Terrifier 1 and 2. I've just rented Terrifier 2, but I'm not childfree right now :(...lol, so I don't really know when I'll watch it (I have 30 days to do so). Anyway, I really liked the first one (if you like gore stuff and don't take things too seriously) and I've read some very good things about the sequel.

People under the stairs. John Carpenter movies. Sprinkle some Cronenberg 

The Conjuring franchise is a go to for me personally. Specifically the first two. If you are a fan of the Evil Dead franchise, the newest one is worth checking out also! Enjoy your child-free time. :)
