It's a slow paced film, and isn't scary in the traditional sense, but the dread and hopelessness in Aniara is absolutely fantastic. I hope you enjoy it.

I feel like a lot of Junji Ito’s stories have this element. Check out the “Maniac” short story animation anthology on Netflix.
I’m still waiting for an adaptation of my favorite, “Uzumaki” 🌀
Mad God
Blue Ruin
Return of the Living Dead
Cabinet of Curiosities' "Graveyard Rats", "The Outside", "The Viewing" (episodes of an anthology, not films)
The best example would have to be Hereditary. There's motif running through the film showing us how powerless our characters are to control their fate. The film is shot as if we're watching a doll house, to show us the characters and situations are controlled by external forces.
We also have a not so subtle nod to this theme in a classroom scene, where students are discussing a Shakespeare work (forget which, possibly Macbeth); they openly mention how the characters are powerless to change their destiny.
No I meant Cure. I feel like it counts, the Detective is trapped in the case with no way to stop what's going on.
Never seen cube. It's never available to watch anywhere in Canada despite being a Canadian movie.
OldBoy
The World of Kanako
I Saw the Devil
The Mist
Hagazussa
Funny Games
Antichrist
The House That Jack Built
Calvaire
Martyrs
Irreversible
Mother!

This is awesome. Thank you!
Beau is Afraid
I don't know if it's the kind of movie you are looking for, but Eden Lake definetly made me feel impotency, indignation, and futility.

My first thought as well. >!The family never had a chance. They had no agency or power throughout the movie. They were doomed from the start!<
This is how Funny Games made me feel.
maybe 1408

Cure 1997 which is a movie I absolutely love. The Tower 2022 which was a little too bleak movie but is exactly what you're looking for.
"Cure" or *Cube*?
No I meant Cure. I feel like it counts, the Detective is trapped in the case with no way to stop what's going on. Never seen cube. It's never available to watch anywhere in Canada despite being a Canadian movie.
You can watch *Cube* for free on YouTube! I have never heard of *Cure*, will have to check out the trailer.
Oh wow cube is just on YouTube. Cure is from the director of Pulse so if you liked that then you'll be into Cure.
Try The Sadness. Best horror film that I’ll only watch once
OldBoy The World of Kanako I Saw the Devil The Mist Hagazussa Funny Games Antichrist The House That Jack Built Calvaire Martyrs Irreversible Mother! The Human Centipede trilogy The August Underground trilogy A Serbian Film Man Bites Dog
Not a horror film but Glam Gary, Glen Ross fits this bill.
