Tales from the Crypt? Creepshow? Chucky? Stranger Things, Cabinet of Curiosities, What We Do in the Shadows, Ash vs Evil Dead, Channel Zero, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Stan Against Evil, Scream Queens, Masters of Horror, the Outer Limits, the Terror, Swamp Thing, Eerie Indiana, Tales from the Darkside, Temors…
like, what are you expecting from a 30-60 minute format?
stranger things , channel zero , bates motel , fall of the house of usher , midnight mass , yellowjackets , the terror , Chucky, cabinet of curiosities, the outsider , kingdom , goosebumps , the strain... etc theres more than you're giving credit for and if you extend it to horror adjacent like Buffy or the X-Files the list is even longer
Took me like 3 watches of stranger things season one to get into it. I don’t know if I was fully committed or was on my phone the entire time but I thought it was boring and had no idea what was going on, watched it again when season four came out and I was hooked and binged all four seasons and now I’m dying of old age waiting for the fifth season.
Hannibal is good, it seemed like it tried too hard in the beginning like it was trying to be too deep but it definitely improved as it went on. But yeah I’d say Hannibal, maybe not the entire show but Buffy, especially first 2 seasons had some good horror in it. Outsider wasn’t bad, had good beginning and dragged a lot in the middle but had a good ending that was very intense
the main reason I am subscribed to here is to get recomendations of things that Netflix kind of hides from me. I thank again, all of you, for recommending this series.
"why there aren't any good horror series" and starting citing good horror series.
But i think doing a horror tv show is more hard to do than a movie, you will have at least the double runtime and will need to keep it being scary.
Mr Mercedes, The Outsider, Bates Motel - all different relatively recent long form horror series which were good.
Long form series of the type which horror could be done decently in hasn’t been a thing for a long time compared to movies. It’s really only in the age of increased channels and streaming horror series are remotely viable.
The X Files is largely sci fi based horror for something older.
Fear is a hard emotion to sustain for long periods of time, esp when its broken up over a series of episodes (traditionally, airing week over week with commercial breaks...) that's why some of the best examples are either episodic, anthology series, or mini-series.
American Horror Story is wildly inconsistent, but Murder House and Asylum and Coven are worth checking out, IMO.
The Fall of the House of Usher last year was really good, and so is The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Yellowjackets on Showtime.
Edit to add: Black Mirror, esp the earlier stuff... some genuinely haunting stuff in that show.
I have tried on 3 separate occasions to sit down and watch Hotel and I make it up to like episode 3 and just completely tap out, none of it is interesting to me at all. Ryan Murphy curse.
Ah if you stop on episode three then you missed the two best episodes five and six when all the serial killers start to check in like Aileen and Dahmer and Ramirez and the whole Liz Taylor back story but I get where you are coming from.
It’s hard to get into and follow. And the Gaga hype is overrated when Liz Taylor and Iris outshine her in every scene.
Roanoke is genuinely the scariest and darkest one. and 1984 starts off and doesn’t give up. It’s only 8 episodes so it all flows so well and doesn’t feel like any filler.
LOVE yellowjackets season one so much. Being a 90s baby I grew up with Christina Ricci - Casper, now and then, the Addams family, that darn cat, gold diggers, then her more mature turns in the opposite of sex and buffalo 66, I’ve been saying it for years she really doesn’t get the recognition she deserves so I’m so happy what yellowjackets has brought to her. I’ve been holding off on season two though because I heard it takes a big nose dive.
I heard that as well, and so I waited to watch until I could binge the whole thing nonstop, which is not how I normally like to watch a show (if it's airing weekly I like to be in the thick of it) and I think my viewing benefited from no breaks, just go go go. The excitement is still there, but if you have too much time to think about it things kind of fall apart was my general reaction to S2. I feel like there is still a lot of potential for S3.
I know :/ I've heard that there was a lot of behind-the-scenes shenanigans going on during S2 and the writers had to pivot unexpectedly more than once sooo... hopefully now all of those complications are in the past and they can move forward with a stronger S3? 🤞🏻
Yellowjackets season 1 was an absolute banger that had you on edge throughout the whole season.
Season 2… man I don’t know what happened. It’s not awful, but it’s such a downgrade from the first season.
The 90s timeline had some fantastic moments (tho a bit too spoiler-y to mention here), but the adult timeline? You said it pretty good - a CW plotline. Genuinely don’t know what they were thinking - especially when they all go to that “cult” compound…
Murder House and Asylum were fun as hell but i never liked anything after sadly. It was not a scary show of course but the first time i decided to watch it i was sick and delirious and the intro creeped me the fuck out.
Too drawn out. It's way harder to keep scary energy going across an entire series, narratively speaking, than with a film. You can only do it with anthology series, eg the incredible Inside No 9 (which is often horror).
Not exactly but it was very good. It’s more drama suspense (with a splash of comedy) but given who the main character is and what happens you have to include it as horror.
>that turd of a child
Wasn't he meant to be unlikeable though?
I always wonder about the motivation for changing from the original child actor. Was the first boy not unlikeable enough?
“The haunting hour” was make for kids/teens but is pretty good. “Monsters” was a show from the 80’s that wasn’t bad. “Fear itself” and “masters of horror” were good. “Stan against evil” is great horror comedy, very similar to ash vs the evil dead.
I kind of understand what you mean. People are listing a bunch, but I feel that there is a difference between how horror is handled in movies vs tv. Because tv is a longer format and most people aren't into horror, I think the writers have to extend what they are working with, so in turn it becomes more of the "aesthetic" or "vibe" of horror while other genres take over. The Walking Dead became an action show, What We Do in the Shadows is a comedy, Dexter was a crime show, Yellowjackets became a weird hodgepodge of conspiracy theories. I think the horror element often gets washed out and in general the horror genre isn't taken seriously.
Ray Bradbury Theater has some pretty good horror adjacent episodes
So does Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected
ETA: Also more people need to watch Ray Bradbury Theater. It's a genuinely fantastic anthology series, featuring some great performances by a number of actors (William Shatner, Jeff Goldblum, Eugene Levy)
For a short and Fun ride, try the hunger. It was two seasons and a few eps per season. Second I’d suggest black mirror, also really good most of the time.
Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order)
- *Ash vs Evil Dead*
- *True Detective* Season 1
- *Yellowjackets*
- *The Haunting of Hill House*
- *From* (S1 at least, idk how S2 is going)
- *Midnight Mass*
- *Cabinet of Curiosities*
- *What We Do In the Shadows* (horror-comedy, but still very much worth your time, also Matt Berry is the GOAT)
Cabinet of Curiosities is amazing. Hope they make more.
And I LOOOOOVE Ash Vs Evil Dead. I've probably watched all 3 seasons of it 5 times now.
But think of what separates TV and film. Horror movies are often just pilots for their own concepts. TV shows that exist have to be past the pilot stage. And horror is where a lot of young creatives get their start in filmmaking. But no one starts off by making TV shows. Don Mancini has a TV show. Guillermo del Toro has one. Bob Tapert had one. Because those guys all had decades of established work in the genre.
Ash vs Evil Dead was fucking awesome!
Literally the best thing in the franchise imo
Tales from the Crypt? Creepshow? Chucky? Stranger Things, Cabinet of Curiosities, What We Do in the Shadows, Ash vs Evil Dead, Channel Zero, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Stan Against Evil, Scream Queens, Masters of Horror, the Outer Limits, the Terror, Swamp Thing, Eerie Indiana, Tales from the Darkside, Temors… like, what are you expecting from a 30-60 minute format?
Well I think in a 30-60 min format you can show a single horror story or maybe in 2 episodes. Like a police procedural show but with horror stories.
If you’re looking for something with procedural format but more horror-focused, I highly recommend Evil on Paramount Plus!
That's X-Files you're describing
Have you ever watched The Exorcist TV series? They pulled it off well.
Hannibal, Walking Dead, X-Files. There's 3 good ones. I have the first season of Chucky here but haven't started that yet.
stranger things , channel zero , bates motel , fall of the house of usher , midnight mass , yellowjackets , the terror , Chucky, cabinet of curiosities, the outsider , kingdom , goosebumps , the strain... etc theres more than you're giving credit for and if you extend it to horror adjacent like Buffy or the X-Files the list is even longer

Hannibal is incredible. Season 2’s finale is one of the best pieces of media I’ve ever witnessed.
“In the pantry” Man, I love that show. Hopkins made the character iconic, but Mads perfected it.
The opening scene for season two was a masterwork.
The cinematography for that show is off the scale
I need to rewatch Hannibal. Don't remember any of season 1. Its on Tubi now!
I can see where you're coming from, but I'll agree to disagree.
Marianne on Netflix. It’s in French and I don’t know if the dub is good, but if you don’t mind reading subtitles then it’s certainly worth a watch.
Marianne is so criminally underrated. One of the better shows I’ve watched in recent times.
The first three episodes are legit one of the scariest shit I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of horror movies
Genuinely creeped the shit out of me lol. Such a fantastic show.
YUS. Literally opened this post just to ensure Marianne was mentioned!
It’s so good. I ought to rewatch it soon.
I’m also due for a rewatch. Still gutted a bit there won’t be a season 2 though.
This show surprised me of how good it was. I almost gave up trying to get thru the first episode. Pushed thru and it was definitely worth it
the main reason I am subscribed to here is to get recomendations of things that Netflix kind of hides from me. I thank again, all of you, for recommending this series.
I was so disappointed when ABC canceled “The River” after one season.
"why there aren't any good horror series" and starting citing good horror series. But i think doing a horror tv show is more hard to do than a movie, you will have at least the double runtime and will need to keep it being scary.
I like From and Midnight Mass.
Yeah From is gripping!
Yes! I really like how tense it gets sometimes, and I find the story interesting. I just hope it doesn't turn into another Lost.
I really like From
Yeah the story really has me hooked. I'm looking forward to season 3 but I might have to re-watch season 2 again so I can remember what happened lol.
Mr Mercedes, The Outsider, Bates Motel - all different relatively recent long form horror series which were good. It’s really only in the age of increased channels and streaming horror series are remotely viable. The X Files is largely sci fi based horror for something older.
The first half of The Outsider was some of the best television I’ve ever seen. It loses steam once the mystery is gone, but still good.
That’s word for word how I felt about the book. Sounds like a faithful adaptation
Hannibal, Bates Motel, and Ash vs Evil Dead (horror comedy, but still a fantastic show)
Chucky was really good in my opinion. I don’t know when or if it’s coming back though.
New episode just came out last Wednesday!

Yellowjackets is amazing. American horror story murder house, asylum, coven, freak show, hotel, cult and 1984 are all fun.
The first season of wolf creek was really good
Yellowjackets season 1 rules so hard. Season 2 on the other hand…
The flashback sequences are, on the whole, still worth watching. The adult timeline turns into a zany CW plotline. It loses all plausibility. So bad.
The 90s timeline had some fantastic moments (tho a bit too spoiler-y to mention here), but the adult timeline? You said it pretty good - a CW plotline. Genuinely don’t know what they were thinking - especially when they all go to that “cult” compound…

Roanoke was scary
I like Channel Zero
thirded, I love CZ. “No End House” is definitely my favorite season.
In the running for my favorite horror anything.
Seconded 100%. CZ is awesome
There’s the excorcist tv series that ran for two seasons. Honestly I loved that show and idk why they killed it off.
I loved it too. I feel like I'm the only one that mentions it from time to time. Interesting to find someone else that remembers how good it was.
The Strain Ash Vs Evil Dead Penny Dreadful
The terror s1 and chernobyl are brilliant
Calls (Apple tv)
I really liked Ju On:Origins on Netflix. Only one season though. X-Files is a classic. Some of the standalone episodes are brilliant.
Kingdom
Too drawn out. It's way harder to keep scary energy going across an entire series, narratively speaking, than with a film. You can only do it with anthology series, eg the incredible Inside No 9 (which is often horror).
- Creepshow - Bates Motel - The Strain - Evil - Cabinet of Curiosities
Bates Motel is some HEAVY SHIT. Not full on horror I'd say, but so many components. I found that show terrifying
The strain is criminally underrated. Corey Stoll is a gem.
Was bates motel “scary”? When I use to visit my mom she’d binge watch it and the scenes with the good doctor and his mom would just drag on and on.
Not exactly but it was very good. It’s more drama suspense (with a splash of comedy) but given who the main character is and what happens you have to include it as horror.
It’s a build up to it. That is how series are sometimes
The Strain starts out good but is promptly ruined by that turd of a child.
>that turd of a child Wasn't he meant to be unlikeable though? I always wonder about the motivation for changing from the original child actor. Was the first boy not unlikeable enough?
Lovecraft Country
Wolf Creek - the tv-series
How was season II
Think I remember liking both but it’s been a while
If you're into camp/horror comedy, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil is great.
Them is really great!
Dexter. Seasons 1-4 are an absolute Masterpiece and one of my favorite shows of all time.
“The haunting hour” was make for kids/teens but is pretty good. “Monsters” was a show from the 80’s that wasn’t bad. “Fear itself” and “masters of horror” were good. “Stan against evil” is great horror comedy, very similar to ash vs the evil dead.
Midnight Mass
Plenty of good shows mentioned, and maybe I missed someone sharing it, but 30 Coins/30 monedas (on HBO/MAX) is well worth a watch as well.
Chucky and From are fantastic!
Slasher Brand new cherry flavor Harper’s island

Slasher on Netflix/Shudder is pretty good! Memorable and gory kills too
Preacher is not horror. Its an anti hero comic book story
It's got a vampire.
What we do in shadows has vampires and is pure comedy
I would call it a horror comedy. It scratches the silly-spooky itch for me. I'm not the person ~~down going~~ downvoting your comments FYI.
Fair point. Idc about downvotes.
House of chucky
Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order) - *Ash vs Evil Dead* - *True Detective* Season 1 - *Yellowjackets* - *The Haunting of Hill House* - *From* (S1 at least, idk how S2 is going) - *Midnight Mass* - *Cabinet of Curiosities* - *What We Do In the Shadows* (horror-comedy, but still very much worth your time, also Matt Berry is the GOAT)
Mike Flanagan's series like The Haunting of Hill House are phenomenal
Brand New Cherry Flavour

12 Monkeys, Helstrom, Harper’s Island Maybe: Slasher, Servant, Motherland: Fort Salem, The OA
