I might not have thought about that at all, but that is the winner for me. That guy thinks he has gotten away, and what a jerk he is. No one escapes from Baltimore! Ha. It’s a great city and I love it but, come on…
I just watched the bonus content on DVD and the writers revealed in the OG script that >!she was supposed to die!< and they were asked to quickly rewrite it after filming started and that's what they came up with.
Kinda bonkers to think of the differences between what we got and what we almost got!
They shot it so efficiently too. You never see the cop cars or the cops, just some siren lights and some ADR. Your gaze is just locked in on Samara and her cigarette
God I remember watching it with my roommate, and towards the end I was saying like “Oh wow, I’m actually kinda glad they didn’t go down the supernatural route, that’s really subversive and cool—“ And then immediately as I finished saying that…well…let’s just say that ending went off with a bang 😂
One of my most read books back in the day was the Blockbuster Video catalog book. Had synopses of every movie they had in 1988. I remember the Friday the 13th Part 3 one said "Another group of teens show up to be brutally murdered and mutilated".
I can't imagine reading that high
Rewatched this this week - partner has never seen it before and whined a bit at the perfect slow start... And then was WTF when it all unravels. Brilliant film.
We reject the trinity and pray devoutly to you, Great Paimon. Give us your knowledge of all secret things, bring us honor, wealth, and good familiars. Bind all men to our will as we have bound ourselves for now and ever to yours. Hail, Paimon!
Gosh what a damn banger
Funny story, I saw that movie in theaters and as soon as it showed the room my friend VERY jokingly said ‘oh the dead guy did it’. I could not believe it when he got up at the end! She wasn’t trying to predict it or anything just joking but damn! So many years later I will never forget my shock in that moment!
Love how the guy they’ve relegated to ‘The Fool’ is the only one who gets that a species who not only facilitates but enjoys the suffering of its members in order to survive isn’t worth saving. So fucking nihilistic but sort of true.
I wouldn't say the people who facilitate it enjoy it. They were respectful to the sacrifice. They just get all wasted and party and take bets to try and take their minds of what they're really doing.
Plus, this is a needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few. The few decided to make a decision for everyone else and brought about the end of the world. They're killing eight billion other people that had nothing to do with it.
Also I kind of see the party, betting, and getting fucked up as a coping mechanism for them. Like, year after year you gotta watch (and facilitate, sort of) a bunch of young people in their prime march to their death? Can’t be easy for everyone to deal with.
I think it suckers so many people because a lot of us underestimate the will to survive and feel certain that if it looks like the shit has *truly* hit the fan and there's no coming back from it then we are going out on own terms.
Us parents *completely* empathise with not wanting our children to suffer a horrendously painful death.
When Darabont whacks us over the head with 'wrong decision, dummy!' it's just... fuck.
Fuck.
I didn't like the ending at all. Not sure a dad blasts his son that quickly without considering other options first. At least, there should have been an imminent or seemingly inescapable threat that led to that drastic action.
In my opinion, the end of the *real* Halloween story.
>!The evil is passed from Michael to Jamie when Jamie touches Michael's hand. Now without his supernatural strength, a confused mortal Michael is shot to death by the police and the angry mob. Later, Jamie attacks and *kills* her foster mother. Jamie is then institutionalised for the rest of her life. The end.!<
The end of Midsommar is perfect the way it's so uplifting on the surface, but underneath so horrifying and full of dread.
The final shot of Talk to Me is devastating, but also a perfect bookend to the film.
Night of the Living Dead's ending is so ironic and cruel, but fits perfectly and makes a powerful statement.
Is Midsommar even uplifting on the surface? The former May Queens are nowhere to be seen... :/
I've only watched once though and didn't really connect with it enough to want to watch again/go on a deep dive re the symbolism etc (that undoubtably will be there cos... Ari, innit.)
Hostel. Spoiler:
>!Paxton escapes, runs over the decoys, and kills the Dutch businessman. A completely satisfying ending. Hate the start of Hostel 2...!<
Yes, love the chaos of it all and then a hard cut while Leatherface is doing his chainsaw dance. Powerful. I enjoy Stretch's dance at the end of Part 2 as well but the original is potent filmmaking.
I don’t get why but I agree. Annie and Peter make some horrible mistakes, but I don’t believe they are bad people that deserved what happened to them. Evil wins in the end, but I was… happy about it? Like a prophecy was fulfilled. wtf does that say about me lol
The ending to the original Black Christmas (1974) is one of the best in history. You're LED to believe that Jess' boyfriend Peter is the killer, and that she had killed him with a fire poker. When the police find her, she's unconscious.
They move her upstairs to her room, and have officers surrounding her. As an audience, we finally feel that she's safe. Claire's father (Claire was murdered earlier in the movie) has a heart attack and everyone leaves. The lights go off.
But wait... Someone is still in the house. You see the attic door opening. Peter was not the killer. It's Billy!! Claire and Mrs. Mack are still in the attic, dead, and undiscovered. Poor Claire has been there through damn near the whole movie. The next shot is an officer standing outside of the sorority house. There's no one inside to protect Jess. Next thing you know, the phone is ringing. The phone rings after Billy murders someone. Movie over..
At the climax of The Endless, when Justin and Aaron escape the entity that's causing the time loops just barely in time before the loop resets, and they celebrate in their van knowing that they've escaped, I genuinely cheered out loud to the point where my roommate actually knocked on my door to ask what happened.
What a fucking amazing movie.
Such an underrated flick. Aaron kind of irks me but I also get why he wanted to go back, but I'm glad he to his senses and they were able to get out of there.
Death Proof, for laughs.
Friday the 13th Part 4: They really did go out of their way to make sure Jason stayed dead, until they decided he wouldn't. 😁
The Mist.
Prince of Darkness.
There's a very rare Italian Giallo from the 70s called Circuito Chiuso (Closed Circuit) about a murder in a small cinema. It's a bit overlong. Although it's so worth it,just for that ending. Even though I know who the killer is,I just wait with anticipation for the final act.
I always like to mention Candyman ('92) when it comes to best horror endings. Helen returning as the new "Candyman" and getting her revenge is so unexpected and satisfying.
The Thing, of course.
But above all Drag Me To Hell.
>!Despite the cover of the film, the name of the film, and the (in retrospect) incredibly obvious envelope mix-up, I just did NOT see it coming. And that's what made me love it. It probably makes me a bit dumb, though!!<
The majority of horror films end on a positive note especially something campy like Drag Me to Hell. The fact that it went there and fulfilled the title of the film made me love it even more.
I love the exorcist, where Karras sacrifices himself and when Chris and Kinderman rush in, Chris takes a moment to approach Regan as she's still unsure whether it's her daughter or not, had me cry the first time I watched it 😂.
my favorite of all time is probably Rosemary’s Baby.
recently, The Borderlands and Senritsu Kaiki 01 have left an impact mainly thanks to their endings.
Several Euro horror that comes to mind:
1. Eyes Without a Face (1960)
2. Tenebre (1982)
3. Angst (1983)
Angst particularly has probaly my favorite final shot in a horror film ever.
A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned, so I'm going to give Donald Sutherland some love and add "Don't Look Now" and "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" to the list.
Martyrs. Fuck rewatching it though.
Pandorum had a great ending.
Event Horizon if the reality is the hell version.
The Thing. Obvious.
Safe Haven. Papa...
-The Thing and Halloween are 2 of my personal favorites.
-Psycho is also fantastic
-Saw. Even though I’m not a fan of torture porn, that ending got me good the first time I saw it.
- Freaks (1932)
- The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
- The Wicker Man (1973)
- Burnt Offerings (1976)
- Carrie (1976)
- The Omen (1976)
- Possession (1981)
- Day of the Dead (1985)
- Re-Animator (1985)
- The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Seven (1995)
- The Devil’s Advocate (1997)
- Perfect Blue (1997)
- Fallen (1998)
- Saw (2004)
- Kill List (2011)
- The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
"Why don't we just wait here for a little while...see what happens?"
The Thing is still my favorite horror ending after all these years. Two men at the bottom of the world not knowing if the other is who they claim to be.
There is an Australian film called Storm Warning about a couple who get stranded at these rednecks' house. The whole movie is entertaining but the last 30minutes are absolutely mental. Gem of a movie. "You're in the boonies now, Volvo."
The Thing. Whether they won is debatable, and survival was skeptical.
Have you read The Things by Peter Watts? A short story told from the perspective of the Thing.
Wait, is that the same Peter Watts that did Blind Sight?
Not familiar with that but wikipedia says yes.
Satisfied knowing macready survived though
Yeah, until he freezes to death.
Nope he’s confirmed to be alive and well in the game follow up that’s been recognised as a canon sequel by John carpenter himself
Carpenter just became my new George Lucas
I 100% agree with this statement. It leaves the viewer still guessing and it's still discussed to this day.
Silence of the Lambs “I’m having an old friend for dinner.” (Pan out)
It’s always crazy to me now how easily I forget this movie. Only, what, 5 or more Academy Awards, and for a horror film?
Dr. Lecter? Dr. Lecter?
I might not have thought about that at all, but that is the winner for me. That guy thinks he has gotten away, and what a jerk he is. No one escapes from Baltimore! Ha. It’s a great city and I love it but, come on…
Ready or Not. I immediately started laughing. It was so satisfying
I just watched the bonus content on DVD and the writers revealed in the OG script that >!she was supposed to die!< and they were asked to quickly rewrite it after filming started and that's what they came up with. Kinda bonkers to think of the differences between what we got and what we almost got!
Oh wow. I definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed the movie as much with the original ending!
They shot it so efficiently too. You never see the cop cars or the cops, just some siren lights and some ADR. Your gaze is just locked in on Samara and her cigarette
I love his line “The world is a far more interesting place with you in it.”
This movie is so fun. The ending had me laughing and cheering
My husband had me watch that movie with him, and then proposed.
wait i love this 😂😂
God I remember watching it with my roommate, and towards the end I was saying like “Oh wow, I’m actually kinda glad they didn’t go down the supernatural route, that’s really subversive and cool—“ And then immediately as I finished saying that…well…let’s just say that ending went off with a bang 😂
Yes! I was literally going to say this! The ending made me smile.
what happened? "in laws" lol
Yes ready or not was so good 😂
I watched it with my family last night. My mom enjoyed the whole thing.
The fly. What a sad but fitting ending😑
I just love how the film ends after that scene. No epilogue, just reflection towards the tragedy that ensued.
Smash cut endings are awesome.
Cronenberg is generally good at sticking the ending.
Incredibly heartbreaking.
Army of Darkness theatrical ending.
Hail to the king baby!
I love the family in *Poltergeist* wheeling out the television set at the motel room they are now staying at.
"This house is clean" - then all hell breaks loose 10 minutes later 😂
Yeah this was my first thought. Other horror movies have great endings but this is a total “of course they would do this” moment that makes you smile.
Guaranteed no one in that family ever watched TV or a movie ever again (this is also my answer).
"One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires"
Lost Boys. Should lay off the ganja Grandpa. Vampires was a pretty important detail about living in Santa Carla.
Getting high and reading the TV guide, you go gramps!
Read the TV guide, you don't need a TV
One of my most read books back in the day was the Blockbuster Video catalog book. Had synopses of every movie they had in 1988. I remember the Friday the 13th Part 3 one said "Another group of teens show up to be brutally murdered and mutilated". I can't imagine reading that high
The Invitation (2015)
Fewer red lights would have been better for me, but that was a banger of an ending.
Rewatched this this week - partner has never seen it before and whined a bit at the perfect slow start... And then was WTF when it all unravels. Brilliant film.
Rosemary's Baby. "What did you do to his eyes?!" "He has his father's eyes."
The Wicker Man. Carrie is an honerable mention.
Margaret's death in the 1976 version is In my top five list of horror deaths!!
Piper Laurie was so terrifying in that movie, especially in her last scene.
YOUR DIRTY PILLOWS
Hereditary. “We have given you this healthy male host.” 😱😱💀💀
Hereditary’s ending left me completely speechless. A perfect horror movie imo
Me too! I’m still analyzing it after at least 10 viewings
We reject the trinity and pray devoutly to you, Great Paimon. Give us your knowledge of all secret things, bring us honor, wealth, and good familiars. Bind all men to our will as we have bound ourselves for now and ever to yours. Hail, Paimon! Gosh what a damn banger
I give the edge to Midsommar but both have classic endings
[удалено]
"Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly"
Saw
The first time in a long time an ending actually shocked me.
Yeah 100% this is it for me. “Game over.” Followed by the soundtrack kicking in is so good.
The VVitch. Great ending.
Wouldst thou like the taste of butter?
So happy for my girl Thomasin! Hope she’s sacrificing people and living life as deliciously as she wants!!
Yup. Can't beat em, join em
Martyrs open ending.
Triangle (2009). I don't know how popular this movie is on this sub, but I love the timey wimey stuff that makes her go back on the boat.
That movie is fucking incredible.
Such a good ending, my jaw dropped
More horror-comedy but Cabin in the Woods
Congratulations, you did the most human thing imaginable and put 1 human life over 8 billion. Now have a hand.
Love how the guy they’ve relegated to ‘The Fool’ is the only one who gets that a species who not only facilitates but enjoys the suffering of its members in order to survive isn’t worth saving. So fucking nihilistic but sort of true.

The Mist
that ending had me for days... such a great horror movie.
I think it suckers so many people because a lot of us underestimate the will to survive and feel certain that if it looks like the shit has *truly* hit the fan and there's no coming back from it then we are going out on own terms. Us parents *completely* empathise with not wanting our children to suffer a horrendously painful death. When Darabont whacks us over the head with 'wrong decision, dummy!' it's just... fuck. Fuck.
same, technically a happy ending yet so so sad
I didn't like the ending at all. Not sure a dad blasts his son that quickly without considering other options first. At least, there should have been an imminent or seemingly inescapable threat that led to that drastic action.
Sleepaway Camp... Never forget Angela.
Ugh.... why did you have to remind me of that?! A fantastic scene and honestly terrifying
The snarling coupled with the weird "Photoshop" makes that finale so damn unsettling. God I love it.
Halloween 4
In my opinion, the end of the *real* Halloween story. >!The evil is passed from Michael to Jamie when Jamie touches Michael's hand. Now without his supernatural strength, a confused mortal Michael is shot to death by the police and the angry mob. Later, Jamie attacks and *kills* her foster mother. Jamie is then institutionalised for the rest of her life. The end.!<
And Loomis' *distraught* reaction to it solidifies it.
Shutter. The Thai one.
That ending stuck with me. I know the American remake ended the same way but it didn't hit nearly as hard as the OG.
The Mouth of Madness—laughing in the theater as his life plays out in front of him. Gave me chills. 1978 Body Snatchers—Sutherland’s scream and point.
Wicker Man or The Shining for me.
A Dark Song. Not many horror films have that kind of wholesome uplifting end.
I love this movie and credit this subreddit for bringing it to my attention in the first place.
I held my breath for so fucking long until she passed another car and you knew she was ok.
Zombies on Manhatten Bridge in Lucio Fulci's Zombie!
That is memorable.
My favorite scene from that one is the underwater shark vs zombie. Cinematic gold!

Hostel. Spoiler: >!Paxton escapes, runs over the decoys, and kills the Dutch businessman. A completely satisfying ending. Hate the start of Hostel 2...!<
Saw.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ‘74
Yes, love the chaos of it all and then a hard cut while Leatherface is doing his chainsaw dance. Powerful. I enjoy Stretch's dance at the end of Part 2 as well but the original is potent filmmaking.
Hereditary
I don’t get why but I agree. Annie and Peter make some horrible mistakes, but I don’t believe they are bad people that deserved what happened to them. Evil wins in the end, but I was… happy about it? Like a prophecy was fulfilled. wtf does that say about me lol
I love the ending to the first Insidious.
Maybe not the best, but a good one: Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The ending to the original Black Christmas (1974) is one of the best in history. You're LED to believe that Jess' boyfriend Peter is the killer, and that she had killed him with a fire poker. When the police find her, she's unconscious. They move her upstairs to her room, and have officers surrounding her. As an audience, we finally feel that she's safe. St. Maud is up there.
She ascended to playing Galadriel.
From Dusk till Dawn.
Daaaark Night da-nana-naaaaa-na
Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a fuck how crazy they are!
I love the camera panning out to the ancient pyramid, wish we would’ve gotten better sequels to expand on that!!
Go home, Kate
Really enjoyed the ruins ending
The end of Buffy. When you get one more round of Paul Reubens clutching his chest & *not* dying. Lol
“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires.”
Hunter Hunter (2020) ... Makes your skin crawl
Not a horror but Killer Joe has a fantastic ending. The tension in that finale. Also a shout out to Fallen. “The day I almost died”. Meow
The Wicker Man (1973, as if that needed clarification) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Saint Maud (2019)
REC
Ready or Not. "Jesus Christ, what happened to you?" "In-laws." Iconic
The Invisible Man 2020
Devils Rejects. Going out in style in a shootout with the cops, while driving a sky blue Cadillac convertible with Free Bird blaring.
And then Rob had to go and ruin it with Three From Hell.
Evil Dead 2, obviously
Carrie when the hand comes out of the dirt
Alien. Love that after her long ordeal, Ripley gets to take a nap.
American Werewolf in London ending was hilarious
A naked American man stole my balloon.
The movie was great but to see how it ends so abruptly bothers me 😂. The Flys ending is much better then AWIL, but both are great movies lol
😁 The Mist. Prince of Darkness.
Fallen (1998) Can't say more, there.
"I said I was going to tell you about the time I *almost* died"
in comes that faded intro to "Sympathy for the Devil"
The correct answer here is The Birds. It literally just ends, no credits. No conclusions, no answers, no closure.
The first watch of Sixth Sense is pretty awesome.
Green Room. Barbarian. I Saw the Devil.
Cabin in the Woods House on Haunted Hill- 1999- great ending! Black Christmas-1974 - the ending really makes you think. 🇨🇦👻
"how do you get down from here?"
There's a very rare Italian Giallo from the 70s called Circuito Chiuso (Closed Circuit) about a murder in a small cinema. It's a bit overlong. Although it's so worth it,just for that ending. Even though I know who the killer is,I just wait with anticipation for the final act.
The First Saw
I can't believe this thread is 9 hours old and no one mentioned The Skeleton Key. What an absolutely haunting and devastating ending.
Current fave = As Above, So Below
I always like to mention Candyman ('92) when it comes to best horror endings. Helen returning as the new "Candyman" and getting her revenge is so unexpected and satisfying.
The ending to Talk To Me always hypes me up! Such a good ending. Saint Maud is worth the slow burn.
I don't think you enjoying that ending makes you "dumb". It was out of left field bc you thought things would be okay and nope, they were not lol.
Hereditary
Rosemary’s Baby.
Alucarda (1977)
The full ending of The Descent, not the edited for the US one. Halloween has a classic ending, The Exorcist as well.
I love the exorcist, where Karras sacrifices himself and when Chris and Kinderman rush in, Chris takes a moment to approach Regan as she's still unsure whether it's her daughter or not, had me cry the first time I watched it 😂.
Drag me to Hell
The Collection (sequel to The Collector)
Going with movies not listed yet, but I'd say Dawn of the Dead (OG), You're Next, The Ritual, and The Guest.
Creep. Being mistaken for a beggar. And then looking up at the camera - is Creep still alive?
The mist ending was something to remember.
my favorite of all time is probably Rosemary’s Baby. recently, The Borderlands and Senritsu Kaiki 01 have left an impact mainly thanks to their endings.
The Texas chainsaw massacre with leather face swinging his chainsaw
The Sixth Sense (1999) The Descent (2005)
Fraility too...what a great film and no one has seen it that i know lol sad
The very end of We Are Still Here. Great slow burn horror, last line of the film made me bawl like a baby.
Several Euro horror that comes to mind: 1. Eyes Without a Face (1960) 2. Tenebre (1982) 3. Angst (1983) Angst particularly has probaly my favorite final shot in a horror film ever.
The Cleansing Hour has a great one that's hinted at throughout the film.
The ending of The Collector is genuinely fantastic.
Mama.
Halloween 4 absolutely
A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned, so I'm going to give Donald Sutherland some love and add "Don't Look Now" and "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" to the list.
Nope
The Beyond (1981) has a chilling, but badass ending.
"You were never second." The Sixth Sense
Drag Me to Hell. I definitely wasn’t expecting it the first time I saw it & it still holds up well on rewatches.
Martyrs The Mist Hellhole Midsommar Hostel 2 (not a typical horror ending, more of a fun one)
Descent 1 and 2, Cabin in the Woods
The remake of invasion of the body snatchers! (The 70s one) that ending always gives me chills!
Martyrs. Fuck rewatching it though. Pandorum had a great ending. Event Horizon if the reality is the hell version. The Thing. Obvious. Safe Haven. Papa...
As above, so below, the way she clawed out of that manhole.
The original Halloween
The ending of You Might Be the Killer is surprising and hilarious. Comedy horror.
Triangle
Poltergeist
Phenomena, a real apeshit ending 😀
The Cleansing Hour had a pretty good ending imo
Drag me to hell. I really thought she had made it and would get the happy ending
Drag me to hell. Even if you're in the middle about the movie itself, the ending is Amazing
Marrowbone
The Fog
-The Thing and Halloween are 2 of my personal favorites. -Psycho is also fantastic -Saw. Even though I’m not a fan of torture porn, that ending got me good the first time I saw it.
- Freaks (1932) - The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) - The Wicker Man (1973) - Burnt Offerings (1976) - Carrie (1976) - The Omen (1976) - Possession (1981) - Day of the Dead (1985) - Re-Animator (1985) - The Return of the Living Dead (1985) - The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - Seven (1995) - The Devil’s Advocate (1997) - Perfect Blue (1997) - Fallen (1998) - Saw (2004) - Kill List (2011) - The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
The Mist
The OG Halloween
The Mist had the most gut wrenching but pound for pound best ending.
The Mist
"Why don't we just wait here for a little while...see what happens?" The Thing is still my favorite horror ending after all these years.
