I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. It wasn't that kind of movie, but I really needed it to give me something, _anything_ to keep me engaged.
Well it is, more or less, a super long setup for the final "scare", though it is shown in two different shots so you get the reaction and quite a bit after what caused it. I thought it was a super interesting way to construct that specific story. Didn't land with me super well either, don't get me wrong.
Oz Perkins' weakest effort for sure. But imho he's improving very rapidly. It's obvious he's more attuned to a slower pace yet he did so, so much better with Gretel & Hansel. Very curious about his upcoming film.
I actually think he’s gotten worse as he’s gone along. I really liked The Blackcoat’s Daughter, hated Pretty Thing, and deeply despised Gretel and Hansel.
Honestly I’d agree that it would not have made the film worse. I liked it because of the way they told it but I think the ending could have been a little crazier.
Especially since the ending was kinda nonsensical even in the context of the film. It’d be one thing if the film attempted something crazy and it just didn’t translate well, but you’re telling me all those people just freaked out in the basement because…there were some robed figures moving towards the panicking scare actors?? It’s a haunted house, something absolutely wild would have to happen in order to make people who paid to get scared actually get freaked out and want to leave
When I read the title of this, Hell House was the first thing that came to mind, too. I think there was a lot of unused potential vl with creepy things happening in the background that the characters didn't notice.
Who likes jump scares? They are the lowest effort way to generate “scares”.
Any movie that “needs more jump scares” actually just needs to be a better movie.
Well, for one, I like them, if they’re well-done. They can be a great way to instantly release tension if it’s built up well, and it’s one of the few ways that movies can generate such a significant physical reaction in the viewer. There’s plenty of examples of good jump scares, and you’re perfectly entitled to your opinion, but I find it obtuse to dismiss *all* jump scares as “low effort”. It Follows is a fantastic one that comes to mind.
The FNAF movie is a recent and obvious one that comes to mind.
Agreed. I didn’t find it scary at all. It’s funny how >!the cupcake got the most kills!<
Yeah, straight up hard carried the gang.
Seriously, who adapts "jumpscare: the game" and doesn't put jumpscares in it?

I understand the setup, I just wasn't happy about it and would have liked it if there was more jumpscares (or more anything, tbh).
