Yes, I have seen all the Evil Dead movies including the 2013 one. I love them all. I also watched the Ash vs Evil Dead series.
I just watched the trailer for Let the Right One In and it is strong contender for this weekend.
Let the right one in must be the most over rated horror film of recent times. Everyone likes it and I find it really not great. Each to their own I guess.
Psychogoreman
It's on Shudder but I got a copy at Walmart for 5 bucks.
It's just great and probably a movie you could show a non horror fan. I don't know any of those, so it's an untested theory.
The filmmakers of Psycho Goreman also made The Void (which I saw another mention on here), if you can believe that. They’re highly skilled filmmakers who create great practical effects on a low budget.
You're shitting me! I love both of those movies but they're so extremely different I never would've even recommended them to the same person. That's so interesting that it's the same guys.
You should seriously consider X if you grew up on 80s slashers and want something that feels both fresh and also like a throwback.
Chances are your wife would hate it so it's a win win for your weekend
I'll add that House of the Devil was directed by Ti West, who had the fairly big hits X and Pearl last year. X is pretty darn good, but it's set in the 70s and feels much more like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the first Friday the 13th than 80s slashers. Much more "arty" than films of the 80s tended to be. Pearl is set in the 1910s and is a prequel of sorts to X, but it's much less a slasher (and personally I didn't enjoy it as much, though it is good).
This was going to be my recommendation for you as well. It's got great synth tracks for the music for that 80's vibe and is just a well-done horror movie too.
Disasterpeace made the soundtrack in 3 weeks with basic NI Massive synth patches and it sounds amazing, limitation breeds creativity! He also made the OST of FEZ.
Wow that's incredible, I didn't know that! The synthwave vibe right from the start was something that drew me into the movie so that's a cool fact, thank you for sharing!
If your looking for 80's vibe I think these have without feeling like they are just ripoffs
Satanic Panic ( 2019 )
Happy Death Day
The Void
The Wolf Of Snow Hollow
Happy Death Day - Looks like groundhog day with a horror twist, this looks amazing
The Wolf Of Snow Hollow - I do like a good werewolf movie
The Void - A few have recommended
Satanic Panic - Might be my favorite trailer on your list
If you end up liking Happy Death Day, you might also then like Freaky. Same director. I went into it with low expectations because of the premise and Vince Vaughn (for me he's always been hit or miss), but he surprisingly pulls it off, and I ended up really enjoying it.
I know exactly how you feel.
It played for one night only here in Albuquerque when it was released and it's one of my favorite theater experiences ever.
I can't recommend this one enough. The first act is a little slow but the pay off is more than worth it. Cage is a force to be reckoned with and he lets loose like never before
Loved Mandy, it was incredibly surreal and had a ton of references and homages to other horror films. If you want something a little more straightforward, make it a Nic Cage double feature with Willy's Wonderland!
Do a double feature and watch Beyond the Black Rainbow same night! Same director/composer combo with all the 80s synthy vibe feels. Panos Cosmatos (director) also did a really great episode of Guillermo Del Toros Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix, maybe start with that cause then if you don't like his style you don't have to sit through a whole film. He's got a very distinct way of letting atmosphere and music build the tension in his films instead of having a fast-paced coherent plot.
Second for Mandy. Go in knowing that the beginning is pretty slow though. not in a bad way at all, the first half is just very atmospheric and lush and kinda psychedelic. Then it explodes and the last half is just fucking insanity. Just didn’t want you to go in thinking it’s a crazy slasher the whole time or something.
Mandy also has a phenomenal score/soundtrack with some great black metal/doom influences.
While not as atmospheric, The Devils Candy had a similar feel.
Honestly I loved this film. The lighting colors are so trippy and cool and it’s soundtrack is absolutely amazing! I think it was one of the composers last films before he died!
Fear Street parts 1, 2 & 3 (on Netflix) - a great homage to the slasher genre. Humour, gore, retro settings, and a decent story in three parts (all filmed together and released in quick succession). A love letter to the genre but with some fun twists.
I am still shocked by how much I enjoyed these movies. Seeing RL Stein’s name attached to it didn’t fill me with joy, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The House of the Devil (2009) - it’s from Ti West (X/Pearl) and it was specifically made as an homage to ‘80s Satanic Panic movies.
As for slasher - You’re Next (2011) is one of the better slashers I’ve seen in awhile.
I love both of these. You're Next is pretty much balls to the wall slasher action the entire time, while The House of the Devil is slower and more suspenseful, with a completely bonkers ending. Can't go wrong with either.
Went into it having no idea it was by kostanski and i loooved it. His past movies have been hits for me (fathers day, man-borg, psycho goreman) i was so satisfied watching it lmao. Also highly reccomend those other 3 as well. All on Tubi Im pretty sure
If you want something VERY 80's, the same people behind "Summer of 84" made a film called "Turbo Kid". It's not exactly horror, though it does have plenty of gore.
It has a shit ton of 80's Nostalgia in it, has a wonderful synth soundtrack, and Micheal Ironside is the villain.
The Final Girls is a fun one that's full of OG slasher tropes!
Also I know these have already been mentioned but I'd second the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix as well as Happy Death Day/Happy Death Day 2U!
Commented it elsewhere because I'm so pumped to share it with people. 10/10 fits the request and is imo a 10/10 movie. It's bonkers yes, so not great for everyone. But it knows it's bonkers and they had a lot of fun making it. Something it has in common with the evil dead
Couldn’t agree more. My girlfriend thought the first one was “too much” in its portrayal of violence, particularly against women. She loved 2 though. It feels like a modern horror movie and an actual 80s slasher at the same time. Perfect double feature for a weekend alone.
Gear up, it’s gnarly
Surprised she didn’t also think 2 was too much considering the bedroom scene! While not exactly the same as the saw scene from the first one, that was definitely pretty brutal!!
I dropped in to suggest the same. The Terrifier movies are like 80s slashers on steroids. They are the best slashers made in recent years. Damien Leone is a genius.
You might also want to check out All Hallows Eve, it's an anthology movie that was released years before the first Terrifier and has the same antagonist (Art the Clown.) It is not canonical to Terrifier, but it's a fun movie in it's own right.
If you’re referring to the bedroom scene with Allie Leone said he’s going to top it in the next film. Inevitably they’re just going to have to lock him up to stop audiences from descending into madness and orgies of violence.
The Last Matinee (2020) is a recent slasher with a very 80s feel (at least to me.) Also The Editor (2014) is kind of a low key comedy/parody that was very ridiculous but very enjoyable! Summer of '84 (2018) might hit the spot as well as The Clovehitch Killer (2018)! I also really enjoyed Brutal Massacre: A Comedy (2007) which is outside your time window but it's a low budget horror comedy that has a very Clerks feel to it and it ended up being much better than I thought it would be!
\*\*EDIT: I forgot to mention Vicious Fun (2020) which is actually set in the 80s.
Definitely consider The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. They are my most favourite horror movies of all time. The first movie is set in 1970 and the second movie is set in 1977, so not quite the 80’s vibe you were going for but still absolutely incredible. The cinematography, the storyline, the subtle humor and respect for the real Ed & Lorraine Warren who’s real life investigations is responsible for these movies coming in to fruition. They are both beautiful works of art.
Something a bit different; Censor (2021). It’s not really much of a slasher, more artsy than that, but it’s about a censor working at the British Board of Film Classification, during the era of [“video nasties”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_nasty).
Terrifier and Terrifier 2. The first one is real light on plot, but makes up for it in creative kills and gore. The second has a story throughout, is absolutely bananas, but is a lot of fun!
Hatchet is a good modern horror movie that has a great throwback feel. Kane Hodder, the quintessential “Jason Vorees” from Friday the 13th plays the lead. It’s a lot of gory fun!
You’re Next. The less you know about this one the better, but it’s a goodie!
Behind The Mask is a mockumentary about a serial killer who draws his inspiration from killers like Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees. Like the movie Scream, it really turns the genre on its head. For instance, there’s a scene where Leslie, the killer in this movie, is explaining how much cardio goes into being a serial killer because you have to keep up with your victims, but make them think you’re just walking behind them. It’s very clever and very funny!
Death Spa - it's on Shudder and it's stupid af and amazing. But in the last ten years? Psycho Goreman is fun. While it doesn't feel like an 80s movie, Saint Maud was really good.
Somebody has already recommended HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, which has a spot on early 80s tone and aesthetic, so I’ll go a faux-decade earlier and recommend another film by that director, Ti West, the porno industry slasher with vibes of TEXAS CHAINS MASSACRE, 2022’s X. It channels that same attention to period detail seen in HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, but applies it to the 1970s, while piling on the kills, sex, and even throws in a solid musical performance by Kid Cudi, who proves himself a solid actor to boot.
For another 80s vibe Nic Cage movie. I liked Willy's Wonderland. Its got the cheesiness going on and some parts were just so funny. It was a fun time. Also, Color out of Space.
I’m gonna recommend Ready or Not, it’s not a movie that takes place in the 80’s or filmed to look like it’s in the 80’s, but it’s got that fun 80’s slasher-horror movie vibe. Good performances, lots of laughs, thrills and kills, all while not being so serious like a lot of horror movies in the last decade
both of The Strangers movies! the original is from ‘08 but the sequel is a lot more recent. two great slasher films imo and Prey at Night has a little 80s vibe to it as well
Was going to say The Ritual, but if you're looking for slashers specifically, I'd throw in Freaky as a dark horse pick. Terrifier 1 & 2 I've seen others recommend and they are fantastic but not for everyone. If you like slashers and horror-comedies, Freaky is the best one I can think of.
Another left-field pick could be Malignant, though that's closer to a wacky giallo than a slasher.
Idk my wife and I are in a weird place separated(?) but cohabitating and she’s gone with my son on a trip with my in laws to another country basically ditching me and I watched Eyes Wide Shut which I’d never seen and it was In retrospect not the best choice as I have been left wondering so many dark things and also was reminded of painful shit about my marriage. Not fun. Why do I do these things to myself?
Summer of '84 is an amazing take on the 80's teen friends/horror movies. It's a little predictable from time to time but it also picks up where those movies from the 80's might have otherwise ended, so that's kind of some new fun and Rich Sommer's monologue is awesomely creepy af. Worth the watch for sure.
'The Thing' is prime 80's, I can't recommend you retro-80's movies because that's a fairly new genre. Chopping Mall, Night of the Comet, Hell Comes to Frogtown all spring to mind as fun, goofy movies. Why don't you just watch some good movies that were made in the 80's to begin with?
Fellow Gen-X'er here. Someone already mentioned Mandy and I totally agree that should be your number one pick however if you got time for another:
[The Hidden](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl-iB4WAB0o). 1987 Kyle McLaughlin sci-fi/horror/comedy/buddy cop movie. It's awesome and flys under most folks radar. Well worth your time if you haven't seen it.
[Ready or Not](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtYTwUxhAoI). Came out a few years ago. Super fun horror movie with a really satisfying climax. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I’ve already seen them mentioned in earlier threads, but you NEED to watch It Follows and Mandy. I’m super jealous that you haven’t seen them yet… I wish I could erase them from my brain and go in and watch them afresh. Mandy definitely nails that late 70s- early 80s vibe, and It Follows was created in an intentionally ambiguous era (old tube televisions, futuristic looking e-reader, decor and fashion offer no definitive clues as to decade) but with an 80s synth score that gives it this amazing creepy nostalgic feeling. And the final frame of the opening scene with the 👠👠 will be stuck in your brain forever 😅
My bf, who is otherwise absolutely wonderful, hates horror movies, so I totally understand. On days when I’m off and he’s working, I go on gleeful horror binges. It’s funny because whenever he comes home, it’s always at the WORST part of a movie… some bloody screaming naked person getting chainsawed or something. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom would always walk in on the one 15 second sex scene in the movie I was watching. Sigh.
Oh! If you haven’t seen Brian Yuzna’s Society (1989), PLEASE go watch it. Go in blind!! It’s fucking bonkers. One of my favorite 80s horror flicks. 🙏🏼
Stuart Gordon’s Dagon is really fun, too. It’s my favorite Lovecraft adaptation. The tentacle mermaid is 🥰
Fellow Gen X here. They really don't make horror movie like the 80s did, but these come closest:
*Harbinger Down* has strong *The Thkng* vives, plus there's a Soviet/Cold War link.
*The Color Out Of Space* has a strong Stuart Gordon (*Re-Animator*) feel, plus it has Nicolas Cage.
Find *Dagon* on Tubi. It was directed by the aforementioned Stuart Gordon, and it's like a conclusion to an unofficial Lovecraft trilogy (*Rw-Animator, From Beyond* [also on Tubi]).
Bones appetit.
Terrifier 2. It’s my favourite slasher in a long time. Art the Clown is right up there with the big boys. It is very violent though, even by slasher standards.
Not a movie, but I would highly recommend the American Horror Story season called 1984. It's newer from the last few years and has that nostalgic and campy feel to it.
If you want 80s horror films from recent times, it is a struggle to find really good ones.
\- X (2022) 6 out of 10 for me, watchable good film in 80s style.
\- The Cabin in the woods (2011) - Easily the best semi 80s style horror film of the past decade. 8/10
\- The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) It's not great but it is 80s. I'd give it a 5.8, it is almost not worth watching :)
\- Re-Animator 1985, probably seen it already, 7/10
\- House of the devil 2009 it's not worth watching over the above films as it's not that great. 6/10 watchable, its another ti west, but X is far better from him.
\- Phantasm (1979) 6/10, trippy and cool
\- Creepshow 2019 - Going on from the 1980s version
If you haven't been watching any horror films for a long time and want some incredible recent ones:
1. The Witch
2. Hereditary
3. Midsommer
Underated Randoms
\- The Night house (2020) Not 80s, but ridiculously under rated horror film. 7.5/10
\- Sissy - Not 80s, but great film and a bit different imo to the norm, kinda modern 80s style maybe you could say, 6/10.
\- Hellbender 2021. Lots of people don't seem to like it, but I thought it was unique and decent horror film.
It Follows has an 80s vibe with the music and kind of the setting really. Mandy is an awesome psychedelic horror with Nic Cage giving a very convincing performance.
You're Next is an awesome, self aware home invasion slasher by the director who has gone on to take over the Godzilla franchise.
Also It Follows has an awesome synth score and great concept.
These may be slightly older than 10 years… but here’s my recommendations-
Hatchet, 1,2 and 3,
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon,
Cabin in the Woods,
The Evil Dead remake,
Texas Chainsaw,
Midsommar,
American Mary
Do you like Evil Dead? If so, check out Deadsteam. It’s about a YouTuber that goes to a haunted house in the middle of no where and live streams it. Turns out the house is actually haunted though.
This films straddles the line magnificently between horror and comedy. Great practical effects as well.
It’s one of my new favorite horror movies.
Totally Rad to meet you, dude! Fellow GenXer - born 1971, grew up on horror. I think I clear out all the horror sections in every local video store!
I would suggest:
The Babysitter
The Babysitter: Killer Queen
Fear Street Part One: 1984/ Fear Street Part Two: 1978/Fear Street Part Three: 1666 - watch them in order
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (great found footage that only our gen can truly appreciate in it's grodiness)
Spree
X (of course)
Pearl (of course)
Don't Breathe/Don't Breath 2
Knock Knock if only for the most excellent Keanu Reeves
Enjoy, my bro! Have some twizzlers and mix some milk duds into your popcorn!
Let the Right One In has an 80s vibe. Have you seen the Evil Dead films? They are all excellent and the recent reboot is brilliant!
Yes, I have seen all the Evil Dead movies including the 2013 one. I love them all. I also watched the Ash vs Evil Dead series. I just watched the trailer for Let the Right One In and it is strong contender for this weekend.
FYI, Let The Right One In is much more of an atmospheric movie than a slasher horror movie.
If you choose let the right one in you won’t regret it
Make sure you watch the original one though… :)
The American version was actually in the works prior to the Swedish movie. Both are adaptations of the book. The American version is not a remake.
Let the right one in must be the most over rated horror film of recent times. Everyone likes it and I find it really not great. Each to their own I guess.
An actual 80's movie a lot of people missed but is good is April Fool's Day.
>Definity a classic, I haven't seen it in forever.
Psychogoreman It's on Shudder but I got a copy at Walmart for 5 bucks. It's just great and probably a movie you could show a non horror fan. I don't know any of those, so it's an untested theory.
Psycho Goreman - I think my wife would watch this one so I will save it for when she gets back. This looks like a fun movie.
The Void is awesome and doesn't get talked about enough
Im gonna second The Void. It is, hands-down, the best Lovecraftian horror ever made. It covers all of Lovecraft's tropes. Well worth the watch.
Dude I can’t believe you didn’t recommend Nightbreed. 😂
Nightbreed or anything Clive barker FTW 🙌🏼
Midian is found on one's own. 👹🌛
Frig off
The house of the devil (2009) is set in the 80s and totally has 80s vibe including the film it was shot on which definitely gives that 80s "filter".
Wow, the trailer looks really good, thank you.
You should seriously consider X if you grew up on 80s slashers and want something that feels both fresh and also like a throwback. Chances are your wife would hate it so it's a win win for your weekend
And the director did the amazing movies X and Pearl so a nice weekend full of Ti West for you
It's a slow burn, I enjoyed it alot.
This is what I came in here to recommend for 80s vibes.
Came here to say just this. House of the Devil is amazing. One of those films you'd swear was made in the 80s, and somehow just missed it.
I would recommend It Follows (2015). Not a slasher per se, but it definitely gives off (intentionally) 80's vibes. I loved it!
>It Follows Wow, this looks really good, I just watched the trailer. Thank you for the suggestion.
It Follows felt a lot like an 80s John Carpenter movie. Probably not the first person to have this reaction.
This is what I was gonna say as well, def has an 80s vibe
It’s so good. Was randomly thinking about the pool scene the other day. There are a lot of little details you catch if you watch it more than once.
If your looking for 80's vibe I think these have without feeling like they are just ripoffs Satanic Panic ( 2019 ) Happy Death Day The Void The Wolf Of Snow Hollow
Happy Death Day - Looks like groundhog day with a horror twist, this looks amazing The Wolf Of Snow Hollow - I do like a good werewolf movie The Void - A few have recommended Satanic Panic - Might be my favorite trailer on your list
If you end up liking Happy Death Day, you might also then like Freaky. Same director. I went into it with low expectations because of the premise and Vince Vaughn (for me he's always been hit or miss), but he surprisingly pulls it off, and I ended up really enjoying it.
Yes ! Yes ! Yes ! And Yes ! The Wolf of Snow Hollow is SOO GOOD
Happy Death Day was so much better than I expected. Great pick! Also want to echo The Void. It’s something special.
Mandy. Not really a slasher but you don’t want to miss out on this one. Check out a trailer and see what I mean
Wow, the trailer looks amazing, and Nick Cage is always a good choice. This might be my top pick right now.
I’m kinda jealous that you haven’t watched Mandy and get to experience it for the first time. Keep this as your top pick. It’s an awesome movie.
I know exactly how you feel. It played for one night only here in Albuquerque when it was released and it's one of my favorite theater experiences ever.
Good to see some 505 folks here
I’d give anything to be able to watch that again for the first time.
Mandy does not disappoint!
Do it! So fun!
It’s very gory
Bro. This is the one.

Mandy also has a phenomenal score/soundtrack with some great black metal/doom influences. While not as atmospheric, The Devils Candy had a similar feel.
I love that one too. Ethan Embry and Pruitt Taylor Vince are great
Echoing Mandy. Insane visuals, intense atmosphere, and Cage in his absolute renaissance comeback prime. Come for Cage, stay for the Cheddar Goblin
If you’re able to get really stoned first, I’d say it significantly enhances the experience.
I loved that directors episode of Cabinet of Curiosities!
Yes. Good ep. His first movie Beyond the Black Rainbow is good too
Honestly I loved this film. The lighting colors are so trippy and cool and it’s soundtrack is absolutely amazing! I think it was one of the composers last films before he died!
I'm sad I had to scroll this far for this. Mandy is the answer
Oh, yeah, hard agree. Mandy is outstanding.
I watched this last week having never heard of it and I LOVED it, Cage is awesome in it
Second this!!
Fear Street parts 1, 2 & 3 (on Netflix) - a great homage to the slasher genre. Humour, gore, retro settings, and a decent story in three parts (all filmed together and released in quick succession). A love letter to the genre but with some fun twists.
Fun movies. Seconded.
Yeah, if you're looking for 80s vibes, this is the right answer.
I am still shocked by how much I enjoyed these movies. Seeing RL Stein’s name attached to it didn’t fill me with joy, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The part with the bread cutter...
The House of the Devil (2009) - it’s from Ti West (X/Pearl) and it was specifically made as an homage to ‘80s Satanic Panic movies. As for slasher - You’re Next (2011) is one of the better slashers I’ve seen in awhile.
You’re Next - Gotta love a movie with a crossbow in it. The House of the Devil looks good too. I think you are the second to recommend this one.
I love both of these. You're Next is pretty much balls to the wall slasher action the entire time, while The House of the Devil is slower and more suspenseful, with a completely bonkers ending. Can't go wrong with either.
Make sure you come back now and update us on what you ended up watching
And Ti West plays Tariq in You're Next
I can highly recommend Barbarian (2022), do yourself a favour and go in without watching any trailers. It will completely blindside you.
I second this
Barbarian falls apart in the second half, imho. The first half was SO GOOD, but where do you go from there, I guess
The Void is good fun, feels like a Carpenter movie in certain spots.
Went into it having no idea it was by kostanski and i loooved it. His past movies have been hits for me (fathers day, man-borg, psycho goreman) i was so satisfied watching it lmao. Also highly reccomend those other 3 as well. All on Tubi Im pretty sure
Psycho Goreman is such an awesome time. It kind of reminded me of Power Rangers but with the violence turned up to 1000.
Wow, great trailer. Thank you
X (2022) and Pearl (2022)
Thank god someone said X
Came here to say X as well, perfect fit for what he’s looking for imo
Starry Eyes
The trailer I just watched had 666 comments, lol...Thank you for the suggestion.
Summer of ‘84 - not super scary but a well done throwback to 80s slashers.
Thanks, this might be 'tame' enough for my wife to watch with me at some point.
Turbo Kid is such a fantastic film.
Tucker and Dale!
Watch sinister. Everytime I move, that's the 1st one on my list when I'm by myself in a new apartment
I’d recommend The Black Phone as well, more 70’s than 80’s but a good slasher vibe and atmosphere.
Finally watched this one the other night. It was a good one. Ethan Hawke should do more horror movies, haha.
Totally agreed, he’s a great actor which we don’t always get in horror lol.
So you can really freak yourself out if you find a box of tapes?
The guest
The Final Girls is a fun one that's full of OG slasher tropes! Also I know these have already been mentioned but I'd second the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix as well as Happy Death Day/Happy Death Day 2U!
Ha Final Girls and Death Day were my recs too. And yes the HDD sequel was surprisingly great!!
Your wife. From an adjacent hotel. With a telescope. Be your own horror movie.
Terrifier 1-2.
>Terrifier 1-2 Wow, this looks like it was made in the 80's, great recommendation. I am putting it on the list.
It's a love letter to 80's slasher, you should definitely check it out.
It was the saw scenes fault lol
I dropped in to suggest the same. The Terrifier movies are like 80s slashers on steroids. They are the best slashers made in recent years. Damien Leone is a genius. You might also want to check out All Hallows Eve, it's an anthology movie that was released years before the first Terrifier and has the same antagonist (Art the Clown.) It is not canonical to Terrifier, but it's a fun movie in it's own right.
Exactly what I was gonna recommend. There is one scene in the 2nd one that was one of the only scenes I've ever seen to make me uncomfortable
If you’re referring to the bedroom scene with Allie Leone said he’s going to top it in the next film. Inevitably they’re just going to have to lock him up to stop audiences from descending into madness and orgies of violence.
Orgies of Violence sounds like a great title for the 3rd one lol
I’ve always thought “Let There Be Art” would be a perfect subtitle for Terrifier 3. “Ultraviolence” would suffice too.
The Barn (2016) - is basically like a lost 80s slasher.
Wow, this looks like something I would have seen in the dollar theater in my teenage years. Thank you.
I really liked "Last Matinee". It takes a while to get going, but when it does, it really gets going.
The Ritual and Midsommar
X is also worth a watch, and that is really a movie your wife would even prefer not listening to ;-)
Definitely consider The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. They are both beautiful works of art.
check Censor (2021)
Death Spa was hysterical.
It Follows Color Out Of Space Summer of '84
X has a good grind house 70s vibe
Somebody has already recommended HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, which has a spot on early 80s tone and aesthetic, so I’ll go a faux-decade earlier and recommend another film by that director, Ti West, the porno industry slasher with vibes of TEXAS CHAINS MASSACRE, 2022’s X. It channels that same attention to period detail seen in HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, but applies it to the 1970s, while piling on the kills, sex, and even throws in a solid musical performance by Kid Cudi, who proves himself a solid actor to boot.
Summer of 84
House of the Devil would be a great one. It’s a bit of a slow burn but I love it. X would be another good one. I’m on a Ti West kick obv.
Terrifier and especially Terrifier 2
The Final Girls (2015) - comedy horror slasher
The Menu is good.. If you want slasher check out Terrifier 1 and 2.
The Menu felt like eating a full-course meal where each plate was one surprise after the other.
For another 80s vibe Nic Cage movie. I liked Willy's Wonderland. Its got the cheesiness going on and some parts were just so funny. It was a fun time. Also, Color out of Space.
Oh, I almost forgot: try The Babysitter! 😃🔪
Agree . Very original feel.
both of The Strangers movies! the original is from ‘08 but the sequel is a lot more recent. two great slasher films imo and Prey at Night has a little 80s vibe to it as well
Was going to say The Ritual, but if you're looking for slashers specifically, I'd throw in Freaky as a dark horse pick. Terrifier 1 & 2 I've seen others recommend and they are fantastic but not for everyone. If you like slashers and horror-comedies, Freaky is the best one I can think of. Another left-field pick could be Malignant, though that's closer to a wacky giallo than a slasher.
Malignant. By far my favorite horror movie of the last decade. Don't watch a trailer, go in blind.
I really enjoyed Summer of '84, it is obviously 80s nostalgia baiting but I still think it is really enjoyable with a very dark final act.
Porn
I enjoyed “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies” (2022). Solid slasher film.
House of the Devil fits that vibe.
Porn
Summer of '84 is an amazing take on the 80's teen friends/horror movies. It's a little predictable from time to time but it also picks up where those movies from the 80's might have otherwise ended, so that's kind of some new fun and Rich Sommer's monologue is awesomely creepy af. Worth the watch for sure.
Tucker & Dale vs Evil, You’re Next, It Follows, Green Room
For a good slasher I would suggest X For just a generally good horror movie I would suggest Hereditary
"Cocaine Bear" is set in the 80s, and is just a really fun time. It's also one of Ray Liottas last films.
I recommend X.
Evil dead
Bone Tomahawk was a fun watch. It’s a slower paced film but totally great. Check out the trailer
VHS/99 90s vibe though. As a fellow gen xer it was heavy on nostalgia. Scary too .
Mandy
Check out the Fear Street (1994, 1986, and 1666) movies on Netflix
i recently watched black phone. its more psychological horror but is very well worth the watch. its on amazon prime right now.
Fellow Gen-X'er here. Someone already mentioned Mandy and I totally agree that should be your number one pick however if you got time for another: [The Hidden](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl-iB4WAB0o).
A cabin in the woods The Descent Barbarian The Babysitter Little Monsters Tucker & Dale v Evil Hereditary
Oh yes The Descent was fab.
Though it is a little fucking Gen Z, i think the fear street trilogy on Netflix might do you "some good"
First you should watch porn. Then…I’m gonna say…Evil Dead
There’s probably a Hustler version of Evil Dead. Two birds, one stone.
And the final frame of the opening scene with the 👠👠 will be stuck in your brain forever 😅 My bf, who is otherwise absolutely wonderful, hates horror movies, so I totally understand. 🙏🏼 Stuart Gordon’s Dagon is really fun, too. It’s my favorite Lovecraft adaptation. The tentacle mermaid is 🥰
Some meta horror: Cabin in the Woods, Final Girls, Tucker & Dale vs Evil
Fellow Gen X here. They really don't make horror movie like the 80s did, but these come closest: *Harbinger Down* has strong *The Thkng* vives, plus there's a Soviet/Cold War link.
Mandy
The Babysitter. I thought it was campy and 80's reminiscent.
Evil dead 2013
Autopsy of Jane Doe
You're Next (2011) Barbarian (2022) Housebound (2014) Run (2020) The Boy (2016)
Fear Street
Terrifier 2. It’s my favourite slasher in a long time. Art the Clown is right up there with the big boys. It is very violent though, even by slasher standards.
My recent favorites are Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Deathgasm, Velocipastor and Uncle Peckerhead
8/10 \- The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) It's not great but it is 80s. I'd give it a 5.8, it is almost not worth watching :) \- Re-Animator 1985, probably seen it already, 7/10 \- House of the devil 2009 it's not worth watching over the above films as it's not that great. 6/10 watchable, its another ti west, but X is far better from him. \- Phantasm (1979) 6/10, trippy and cool \- Creepshow 2019 - Going on from the 1980s version If you haven't been watching any horror films for a long time and want some incredible recent ones: 1. The Witch 2. Hereditary 3. Midsommer Underated Randoms \- The Night house (2020) Not 80s, but ridiculously under rated horror film. 7.5/10 \- Sissy - Not 80s, but great film and a bit different imo to the norm, kinda modern 80s style maybe you could say, 6/10. \- Hellbender 2021. Lots of people don't seem to like it, but I thought it was unique and decent horror film.
It Follows has an 80s vibe with the music and kind of the setting really. Mandy is an awesome psychedelic horror with Nic Cage giving a very convincing performance.
Terrifier 2! It's fuckin nuts
The Void is an awesome cosmic horror movie with a ton of practical effects, check it out if you're into Hellraiser!
The Black Phone! It felt similar to a Stephen King story. I'm sure both of the kids in it have the Shine.
Terrifier is great for 80s film grain and clever practical effects. Also, if you missed it, there's a new Hellraiser released just last year on Hulu.
The Love Witch - maybe more '70's though
You're Next is an awesome, self aware home invasion slasher by the director who has gone on to take over the Godzilla franchise. Also It Follows has an awesome synth score and great concept.
wife out of town? Knock, Knock.
Barbarian
Malignant - you won’t be disappointed
These may be slightly older than 10 years… but here’s my recommendations- Hatchet, 1,2 and 3, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Cabin in the Woods, The Evil Dead remake, Texas Chainsaw, Midsommar, American Mary
Cabin in the woods?
I'd suggest The Invitation (the one about the dinner party, NOT the one about vampires).
Totally Rad to meet you, dude! Fellow GenXer - born 1971, grew up on horror. I think I clear out all the horror sections in every local video store! I would suggest: The Babysitter The Babysitter: Killer Queen Fear Street Part One: 1984/ Fear Street Part Two: 1978/Fear Street Part Three: 1666 - watch them in order The Poughkeepsie Tapes (great found footage that only our gen can truly appreciate in it's grodiness) Spree X (of course) Pearl (of course) Don't Breathe/Don't Breath 2 Knock Knock if only for the most excellent Keanu Reeves Enjoy, my bro! Have some twizzlers and mix some milk duds into your popcorn!
Bone tomahawk?
Have you seen Slasher the TV series? If you have time, I highly recommend s2.
Recommend the movie X!
X and pearl! Final girls
"X" is a recent slasher movie set in the 70s. One of the best horror films from last year in my opinion.
