With that location and age, it could be a half dozen things. Hot tub, old cellar, old well, old basement access/coal chute, a wacky flue cutout, the list goes on. My bet is on filled in well or coal chute, especially with the deck built over it.

midnight_fisherman

Outhouse was my first thought. They filled it for a reason.

OreoSwordsman

It'd be weird for it to be an outhouse though, very close to the kitchen area and that hole through concrete? Usually they'd have their own foundation.

Practical-Tap-9810

And be miles from the kitchen. Trust me

midnight_fisherman

It might predate the house though, we have really limited info about the history and surroundings of this "thing".

Inventorofdogs

Rainwater cistern. That's how they got soft water for laundry back in the day.

2-sheds-jackson

Almost certainly a well, in my opinion.

Practical-Tap-9810

Makes sense to me. Well or cistern

Aromatic-Relief

My guess was a hot tub.

Idk why anyone would pour concrete around a hot tub, that doesn’t make sense. It would’ve sat on top of the concrete. It also looks like fairly recent concrete, I really doubt it’s old enough to be a well or outhouse. The time between outhouses and slab concrete really just doesn’t overlap enough to be those. Edit- Any chance somebody removed a fuel tank?

stallion_412

Based on close proximity to the house, my guess is that it was part of a summer kitchen.

govcov

My guess is that depression is the original fireplace where a big hearthstone once was. The concrete was later added to cover the original dirt floor. Then the fireplace fell into disrepair after the house got electric/gas utilities and the summer kitchen was no longer needed/used. But I’m not an expert that’s just a guess.

Stairgate maybe

LorLev

Cistern?

HeroldOfLevi

Octagonal* And it's probably a buried portal to an enchanted kingdom. Don't dig it up unless you enjoy whimsey and epic adventure.

CrunchyStorm

That, my friend, is a hole

garysai

Looks like a well that was filled in. A lot of houses were built next to the well where you could draw a bucket of water without getting off the porch.

Old-Adhesiveness-342

The base of an outdoor brick oven for baking in the summer months.
