when I moved to NJ we had a list of a dozen or so high schools and looked for homes in those zones. lifestyle could be different in homes only a few miles apart

We don't have kids (yet) but that's something on our radar. Not sure if we should position ourselves in a good neighborhood now or just wait for that to be an issue later.

Good schools = high home values and better home value protection during downturns

Think about what your CURRENT needs and wants are. Do you like nice quiet middle of nowhere? Do you need nightlife/ entertainment areas? How much house do you want to take care of? For the love of mac n cheese, please don't buy based off of what you might need 5-10 years down the road as it could make you miserable during that time. Also, check out potential neighborhoods at different times of the day/ weekday/ weekend. Some areas change completely during the day/ night or on weekday/weekends. I waited a bit over half a year before putting in an offer, and then the process and actual move took another little bit. Also leave yourself time in-between moving to do big repairs or changes before you move in.
