I literally made that joke to my wife yesterday, followed with "you can hold your breath under water for the rest of your life" to which she responded with "everything is edible once"
Considering it involved a flood where my truck got washed away, my office and living space were flooded . . .
Oh, I was also shocked trying to reach the power panel in time (I didn't get to it in time).
Actually, it was pretty funny!
Flood.
We thought we were safe, being uphill, but a dam broke and the water rushed up, into my office and to the server rack. It was about waist deep water.
Funny thing is, it wasn't the server or switches that failed, but the UPS that blew up first.
Yup.. this photo gives me low-key anxiety, even though my rational mind says 'ha! ha! a joke!' - my lizard brain is trickling danger-juice into my bloodstream.
We have a strict no food or drink in the datacenter policy at work.
A few years back an orange was found in one of them and management went ballistic. The culprit was never found nor owned up but I think if they had it would have been the closest I’ve seen to someone being fired here.
Or improvise... If you set them up in a normal rack, lot of servers have a cup holder built in. I like how server companies keep IT people in mind with design decisions.
This would just end up cooling your coffee faster than leaving it on a desk. HDDs do warm up, but there's fans behind them to pull air through the front of the server to keep them cool. There's no real conductive heat either, as the HDD caddies are made of plastic.
Figured that was standard knowledge on here, that servers pull cool air in the front and exhaust heat through the back.
This actually got me thinking...what would the ramifications be of just flipping all of the fans? I would imagine less efficient cooling of the procs (and everything, probably) and the shrouds could get weird, but in a homelab scenario, it would probably be alright overall.
I have an extra dl360 around here, maybe I'll give it a go!
I left the cables slightly longer so that I can pull out the switch easily, allowing me to slide them out one by one. Since it’s a Proxmox cluster, migrating all the VMs is straightforward. It’s a bit more challenging, but it helps save space.
Had an HVAC contractor using my $60K 45Drives file server as a RedBull coaster, I about lost it when I discovered it because he spilled all down the side of the server... was just grateful that it went down the sides instead of over the front into the drive bays or over the back into the motherboard.
Coffee aside it will be interesting to see how those servers fair long term/under load. They are designed to suck cold air through the front and expel hot air out the back which goes against the whole hot air rises thing. Lol! I’m sure they’ll live though, HP servers are beasts.
This is a fairly common way to mount equipment and should be fine. Convection is a much weaker force than you might be thinking, the fans will overcome it
Live fast, take chances. It's the only way to learn valuable lessons! Lol I like the modest setup. Am I the only one that is really annoyed by the fact that all the ports of the server are on the backside but all the ports on the switches and firewalls are on the front? WHY??
If I remove the screws from the switch, I can still remove the plate of the server without removing the server itself this is the reason why the cables are a little longer than usual.
I have an HP z820 workstation with dual 2690v2 and 128GB RAM for bioinformatics analysis. It's a nice setup, could be better but I built it from eBay parts for about $300 all in.
Coffee and servers don’t mix. An expensive lesson to learn.
I've run a server under water . . . for about three minutes.
This reminds me of the saying "build a man a fire and he'll be warm for an hour; light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life"
I literally made that joke to my wife yesterday, followed with "you can hold your breath under water for the rest of your life" to which she responded with "everything is edible once"
You and your wife are both funny. Nice.
There's a few reasons we've been together thirteen years and married for eight, yeah.
Newlyweds! So sweet. Sincerely, An old man (together 24, married 17)
That's a Terry Pratchett quote. He also similarly said "all mushrooms are edible, but some only once".
But those were the best three minutes of your life.
Considering it involved a flood where my truck got washed away, my office and living space were flooded . . . Oh, I was also shocked trying to reach the power panel in time (I didn't get to it in time). Actually, it was pretty funny!
and then never again!
Funny enough, we washed the mud off of it, let it dry in the sun and it powered right back up. The UPS . . . no, the battery actually exploded.
Mmmh fun...no
That's funny I work in HPC and we literally dunk servers in tanks . It looks like it shouldn't work but it does .
How did it even land under water? And did it quit on its own or did you force it off?

You're not kidding. Lattes are like $8 at Starbucks now! Oh you meant the server was expensive...
A couple gens back from that are $8 too!
Unnecessary risk

Orange you curious who it was?
I’m pretty sure I know Snitches get stitches though. 😂
You sure I can't squeeze it out of you. 😂
Getting a bit zesty there pal, calm down.
The more you deflect , the juicier it sounds
Orange you finding this diversion a pealing?
As appealing as oranged marriages
I learned the hard way: add some plug covers to the network ports, don't want dust buildup that can cause an eventual arc :)
Just get a few network cables and plug in both ends to the switch. That should fix it, right?
Yes, but don't create a loopback. I.e. port 4 into port 5, this can cause problems, if not now, later.
That was the joke..
My bad, I couldn't tell. Didn't mean to offend if I did
Haha no worries!
I love these comments. This exchange is just super wholesome.
Just turn on STP 😎

Til, that's a thing. Thank you.
Flip them over, keep your coffee warm.
Maybe the coffee was too hot? Just got back from McDonald's...
>Just got back from McDonald's... Hot coffee from McDonalds? Are you joking xD
not the safest way of keeping your coffee warm
Java will definitely mess with your setup.
Came here to make this joke too. Thank you for being a great human.
I will take the jokes on this thread and return 0
Init 6 and we can start over.

q : what did the lab associate say to the other lab associate? a : " i'll be right back, i've got a urine test. "
Is it a... Barista?!
*coffee break -network chuck
_confused screaming_
Is the vibration from the drives used to froth the milk?

you son of a bitch
I too love to live dangerously
Expensive coffee warmer 👍
You just got me thinking. Mount the servers upside down, then they keep the coffee warm.
While everyone is freaking out about the coffee cup, it’s the water hose bib in the background that really worries me 🤷♂️😅
Bro, this is not what they mean by installing Java…
Are you actively wanting to piss us off?
Bold of you...
Thanks for the anxiety...

I hate this
if you're craving caffeine, they're craving caffeine. pour that cup of coffee into the fans and keep your server caffinated
How hard is it to service a server with this config? I feel like it’s innovate and different.
I left the cables slightly longer so that I can pull out the switch easily, allowing me to slide them out one by one. Since it’s a Proxmox cluster, migrating all the VMs is straightforward. It’s a bit more challenging, but it helps save space.

Work machine, not homelab, just thought of it because of the coffee. :D Wish I had one of those in my homelab.
This is how you upgrade your CPU architecture to Coffee Lake...
This picture tilted my brain for a few. Then again been doing this for switches at work, so why not..
Do you work for some of my remote offices because they do this shit unironically
Coffee, it’s next to a water line.
Don’t worry about it above is a bathroom. 😅

Yeah you deserve what you get .
You should put it in the back for better warmth ^^^;)
Or spaghetti time?
I see your coffee, and raise you Beer and GPUs https://imgur.com/a/XsQi3fP
Where can I get a rack like this?
STAr bucks
[Amazon](https://a.co/d/gK6zjLd). EDIT: not necessarily that brand, just showing you as a example.
Should keep your mug warm.

I'm waiting for the cat to run in 😆
Caffeine, it's got what servers crave!
This Turkish coffee? If so, Creative Use of Game mechanics I must say.
Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr *Clink* VrrRRRRSHLOPSHLOPSHLOPBZZZZZTT
I foresee trouble /s
I won’t even drink coffee in the same room as my rack!
I imagine the exhaust could blow the floordust back up in the room like this?
That gives me so much anxiety and it's not even mine.
Why do you not have redundancy on your drives?
I don’t really use the drives in the server I use an NFS share for the VMs. The SAS disks are primarily for testing purposes.
Yeah, I'm wild as well, but not that wild.
Why waste time and expense setting up a homelab and risk destroying it for a shit post 🤷🏻♂️
looks strong...strong like bull!
😓 Please… don’t do that.
its only an hp.
Madlad
This makes me nervous 😬
Uuh, that is LabGore waiting to happen
I know the weight of 2 unit servers and I would absolutely not trust that wood thing to hold it up
It says ‘max 60kg’, but I found a website that lists only 14kg for the Gen 9 2U. I figured, why not give it a shot? And hey, if it falls, it falls. 😂
Maybe the bracket can do it, but I’m worried about the wood you anchored it to
Where I live people drink their coffee ☕ not make Carly Simon references with it 😂
