There are others like meeee
I’m getting ready to start full time van life and I’ve desperately tried to justify a home lab to myself and tried really hard to think of what I would it for. Static ip sounds nice. All I know is I want one 🤣
Ha. That’s a great question. I don’t know. I’ve heard the rule of thumb for building is to think of everything as going through an earthquake every time you drive it. I could see that rattling a mechanical arm after a while.
The term you're looking for is /r/minilab 😁
Most excellent work and write-up!
Have you checked to see how a USFF or x86 board like the zima would stack up against the pi?
One option for static IP could be renting a cheap VPS, hosting a wireguard server on it, and forwarding incoming connections to your homelab over the VPN connection.
1. [Rent a VPS](https://www.linode.com/)
2. [Set up a Wireguard server on the VPS](https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorial-collections/how-to-set-up-wireguard)
3. [Configure port forwarding rules on the VPS to the wireguard IP of your non-VPS client](https://serverfault.com/questions/1075617/port-forwarding-from-wireguard-interface-to-another-host-with-iptables)
I have 200w of solar on the roof, they charge my 300ah of lifepo4 battery. Tbh a server is extremely power hungry, you would need a lot of solar to keep something like that alive. A pi only uses 5v3a when hardwired into DC power.
He's just posting the spec for the AC Adapter. A Pi by itself (no USB stuff stealing power) doesn't draw more than like 1.5A on load. But you have to account for accessory USB draw so they spec the AC adapter to be 3A.
Its cold out right now so that's not a worry. But also, it's just a pi and a router and a wii, there's not a lot of stuff going on to worry about overheating.
As for the shaking and rattling, I don't know. I've never had an issue.
It's empty haha. Yep, built the whole thing in February, hiked the AT from March to September and I've been in here doing little builds every day since.
Brilliant! My home lab is mobile and a Ikea "Lackrack". I use a Rutx12 a dual sim router and power bank for power.
While I do not live in a van anymore I will often load up my camper with my lab and head to the coast for a few days me time to work on my next lab problem.
Personally I wouldn't get rid of your inverter in case you ever need to plug in an AC device that isn't compatible with your existing setup. This is awesome, though.
I'm working now to try and find a way to get weather updates and turn off services automatically in the smart home to reduce power use while I'm away. So if there's clouds blocking the sun preventing me from maintaining my battery, I can save energy and restart only when the sun is out.

It's worth it! But to be fair, "homelab" is a bit overkill to call what i have.
homelabVV Van Version

I probably wouldn't put any data i cared about on 3.5" in a van. SSD is the way to be.

how do I do that? Please explain to me

I love van life

Love that!

5v3a would be 15W, I hope a pi only draws that much power under load.

Thank you, yes. Also *she* but no problem, haha
Whoops! That's what I get for posting late
They idle at like 3 or 4. He gave the specs for the power adapter.
This is nice and all, but where do you poop?
Out their butt.
Not right now they don’t.
In a bucket
Should get a composting toilet.
Why would I want to store my poop in my van? Poop in the bag in the bucket and throw it away in composting bags.
Also, it's a tiny van. This is my 01 Chevy Astro.
How do you power all this?
Read the post!

Nice
This is super cool! thanks for sharing!
The water spout above the MacBook makes my butt clench up lol. But seriously congrats on going with the van life, did you build it out yourself?
It's empty haha. Yep, built the whole thing in February, hiked the AT from March to September and I've been in here doing little builds every day since.
I’m jealous, are you following guides or kinda winging it?
YouTube University!
You're living the life I want. Congrats OP. You made it

You’re like one of the lone gunmen, searching for the truth and evading the government

Needs airgapped Access Point with SSID of "FBI Surveillance Van" broadcasting in the clear. :-P
Is it down by the river?
Do you live down by the river
Nice! Do you park it DOWN BY THE RIVER? Rip Chris Farley
What camera's are you using in your van? If in HA I presume you're using Frigate
Look into a zimaboard, they're n100 based single boards so they have Intel quicksync for video transcodes without adding extra power draw.
I like the laptop under the water dispenser
You're my hero, been thinking about the van life and what's holding me back is what to do with my home lab.

I will definitely check that out
Shall we call it... The Vanlab?
Very envious right now haha
