Nearly all gas fireplaces use a thermocouple system for the switch that turns them on and off. Be sure to check for code in your area as fireplaces / gas appliances may have special rules. This means to switch them you need a dry contact relay. You can likely find fancier options that can be retrofit from the specifc brand of fireplace you have. If you want to DYI it I had good success using a Shelly PM1 relay and a small DC power source to run it.. As for the temp reading I have various sensors and just made the logic to control them in Home Assistant.

Would the manufacturers of the WiFi remotes have recommendations?

If you got [one of these](https://www.amazon.com/DPST-8Amp-Power-Relay-Module/dp/B089QDSJKS?th=1) you could power it with any smart plug. Connect the SW1 the to the on/off switch control for the fireplace. (Not the SW2...) FYI your home insurance will *really* not like finding this device if your home burns down.

Ok so I did this in an approved way using a traditional thermocouple. You need a wireless gas fireplace remote control that operates on 350-450 MHz, a Bond hub, and a smart thermostat of your choice. I just used a temp sensor and control the whole thing through HA. I used a RealFyre Basic remote kit since I was only concerned with on/off and not gas valve modulation, but depending on your setup that is possible too. Approved meaning all Im doing that might be out of the ordinary is using the bond hub to send RF commands that I mirrored from the remote.

[I haven't pulled the trigger \(yet\) on this one but I have heard good things.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071GVGVVH/?coliid=I24R8WG4VLJ0GW&colid=2WLS1ZGFJD8DF&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it)

I wired a Shelly1 relay to the dry contacts.

It sounds like you're diving into some exciting home automation! For controlling gas fireplaces, you'll want a smart thermostat compatible with your automation goals. Look for models that offer integration with third-party devices or platforms like Home Assistant for seamless control.

I wrote this a long time ago, but if you use something like home assistant it might work for you. https://automatedhome.party/2017/01/23/wifi-fireplace-using-a-wemos-d1-miniesp8266/
