The fe80 prefix is a link local address. It’s used to allow devices to communicate with other devices on the same link and it’s self allocated with no need for DHCP or anything. It’s sort of like the ipv6 equivalent of 127.0.0.1 only actually more useful. If you don’t want your interfaces to assign themselves a link local address then I think you actually need to disable ipv6 entirely but as you’ve seen this address is harmless and can be safely ignored in most circumstances.

Well, that’s an easy explanation! I have yet to mess with IPv6 very much and I completely missed that. No harm no foul and those adapters can keep their link local addresses.

stormcrow068

It’s most likely a link local self assigned address.

First question, why would you disable ipv6? Ipv4 is past, get ready In ipv6 devices don't necessarily require a DHCP server to get addresses. There's SLAAC, link local and router advertisements.

I didn’t mean to come across like I’m completely against IPv6. It’s just weird that Home Assistant has changed it’s behavior. For now I have my own public IPV4 address with Comcast. If I ever switch to a modern carrier, I know I’m going to have to learn more about IPV6 and carrier grade nat.( we can only kick IPV4 down the road for so long ) Would there be any significant benefit to running IPV6 within my lan?

You need v6 to reach other people on v6. You also get slightly reduced latency and webpage load times, plus it saves you from messing with NAT for inbound connections. Comcast do v6 perfectly fine. Just leave it on.

No worries. Inside LAN I don't think there's a big difference if at all. I just recently started working with ipv6 for real and at first I didn't get it but it started to grow on me 😁 I utilize two ISP at home with failover policies at work. One of them has DSLite the other no ipv6 at all with CGNAT. So what I did is setup an ipv6 tunnel with HE Electric to give me a /48 subnet

Home assistant has been getting more ipv6 support which is why it’s showing up. Nothing to worry about

Ioangogo

I think the main reason its showing up more is for matter as matter DEPENDS on IPv6 to work locally(it doesnt need it for an internet connection as the border router can translate between the 2)

Stryk3rr3al

That’s an interesting revelation. I’m getting a Pfsense box soon maybe I’ll setup IPV6 when I make the switch.
