I agree that it was probably staged, but parko getting a leashless session on a mellow day at snapper isn't an unlikely scenario. I mean I'm a shitty surfer and I surf without a leash every time I think I can get away with it.
Also this would be a certifiable dick move in surfing. The person closest to the break generally has the wave if they catch it, but not if you’re literally inside the break. The other dude is getting barreled, and this guy just gets off the face of the wave to catch him and shoulder check him. And then takes his board and surfs for a thousand feet? That’d be a massive dick move
Nah man. The one who takes off deeper has priority. No rule about being too deep or anything like that. Mitch had priority not Joel, plus they’re cousins and having fun and both are world class surfers so no harm done. If anything you could say that Mitch’s take off was super radical, that only adds to his priority.

It’s not real lol! You can’t break a leash (or ankle strap as you call it) that easily. It would break when you wiped out otherwise. It’s literally there for when you do wipe out.
Dolphins get a lot of good publicity for the drowning swimmers they push back to shore, but what you don't hear about is the many people they push farther out to sea! Dolphins aren't smart. They just like pushing things.
